Hey /dbt/

How do l get a rock hard brake lever.

I have a brembo radial MC and monoblock calipers, you would think I would have a harder lever than this mush shit for the first ~1" of lever travel.

I did a through bleed with 5.1 Motul and it firmed it up a little bit but still not as hard as the new bikes at the dealer. Bike has good braking power but is missing a bit of initial bike. Probably going to put in EBC HH pads.

The same story with the rear but worse. The rear used to be firm as fuck and just a bit of pressure with almost no travel would lock up the rear. Now it feels like I'm going through a good three inches of travel before the rear end will start to lock up. I bled and flushed with new Motul 5.1 at the same time and it didn't help much. Before I put the bike away for winter the pedal was perfect and firm as shit. not sure what happened.

An anon suggested zip tieing the lever overnight so I did that yesterday, I'll see if it made an improvement when I get home from work.

Thoughts?

I owned an SP2 RC51.

They are neat and sound tits but they are pretty horrible bikes to own.

>seeps oil from every mating surface
>constantly shaking itself apart
>water pump failures are major issue
>overheating is major issue due to terrible radiator placement
>coils faiI
>heavy as sin
>uncomfortable as fuck, even by aggressive superbike standards
>heavy engine braking + no slipper clutch eats up the rear tire constantly without perfect downshifts.
>heavy bike + torque eats up the rear tire constantly.

Imagine a Honda with almost Ducati tier (lack of) build quality and constant issues that have to be addressed.

I owned it for about two years and had the fairings off it working on it longer than I actually had it on the road riding it. Had an intermittent issue where the rear cyc\linder would just stop firing for no apparent reason, even after coils, plugs, wires were replaced. I knew it was getting fuel because it would start flaming out the tailpipes, lel.

Tons of 'character' and sounded awesome with my Two Bros exhaust but a pretty terrible ownership experience.

when i changed my fluid for the first time, i did the rear brake. i thought i did it perfectly but i lost all pressure. i pumped and pumped very slowly and bubbles eventually came out, but would keep going back into the caliper. i got a one way valve which helped a lot, but some real bleeding tools would make it much easier.

there's gotta be bubbles in there somewhere. the front is even more difficult to bleed properly (assuming you have dual calipers). that's my guess anyway.

did you just upgrade to the new cylinder and lever?

How are you bleeding? Here is how I've done 99% of the cars I've worked on, should still apply to bikes because hydraulics.

Open master cylinder cap.
Open ONE bleeder.
Let sit while gravity does its work.
Close bleeder.
Fill master cylinder and recap.
Slowly pump.
Hold firm pressure and without letting off open the bleeder.
Close the bleeder before you release pressure.
Repeat until firm, make note of the master cylinder level make sure it doesn't run dry.
>>
>>14668146

Is there such a thing as a good NN Bike?
>>
>>14668248
You should have a tube running from the bleeder to a container filled with brake fluid as well.

never heard of this, but i dont work on cars. if the fluid level in the reservoir hits the bottom, you're letting in a ton of air. usually people top it off to avoid this as they bleed.

open reservoir cap
attach hose
open bleed valve
pump lever in
pump lever out sloww
keep reservoir topped off
stop when new fluid starts bleeding
close bleed valve
cap the reservoir

Gravity Bleeding.
Works really good when you replace a line or caliper. Basically you leave the bleeder and cap open until fluid starts bubbling out of the bleeder. It helps keep the fluid from getting aerated when you pump.

Due to line size and viscosity of brake fluid it would take hours for you to run the master dry.

With this method I could bleed calipers and hoses on most cars with about 2 pumps of the brake pedal per wheel.

This is wrong, when you release the ever the bleed valve has to be CLOSED.

If you let the lever out with the bleed valve you are creating a slight vacuum in the system that will pull air into the bleed valve, the opposite of what you want.

You want to create pressure in the system with the master cylinder, open the valve, then close the valve while the system is still under pressure (before you reach the very end of lever travel). You never want the system open (via bleed valve) to atmosphere without the system being pressurized or while the system could be under vacuum.

>>14668273
Braided brake lines are mostly a scam. The steel braiding essentially just makes them abrasion resistant (and also makes them abrasive on anything the come into contact with). Braided lines can and will still expand under pressure.

Replacing old lines with new reinforced rubber lines will have the same effect as replacing old lines with new braided steel lines.

I haven't replaced the lines because they are only a few years old and shouldn't be worn out enough to make a mushy lever yet. Certainly not to the level of ~1" of mushy lever travel.

>>14668248
>gravity bleed

This is effective for filing new lines/calipers to a point, but it does not evacuate all all air bubbles from the system. for that you need a pressure differential between the hydraulic system and your bleed system. Meaning you either need a vacuum pump on the bleed fitting, you need to pressurize the system via the master cylinder, or you need to pressurize the system via a professional pressure bleed system hooked up to the master cylinder.

>Braided brake lines are mostly a scam. The steel braiding essentially just makes them abrasion resistant (and also makes them abrasive on anything the come into contact with). Braided lines can and will still expand under pressure.
I replaced the stock rubber hoses with steel braided, and there was an incredible difference in pedal feel. It is very linear now.

>Not just running hardline to your calipers
>>
>>14668372
Doesn't read the post.

You start with gravity bleeding always to reduce aeration THEN switch to pressure bleeding to finish. Which is what I wrote.
>>
>>14668384
This is likely because your sock lines were worn and needed replacing.

Replacing with new rubber lines would have had the same effect.

Swapping out perfectly good new lines for new steel braided lines will have no effect.

>>14668391
Steel braided lines are the same as rubber lines, but with a flexible sheath. This sheath does not provide any additonal reinforcement to the inner rubber line and can expand itself.

Rubber lines or fiber reinforced and do not expand noticeably until they are worn over time (many pressure cycles). Steel braided lines suffer the same fate after many pressure cycles.

Steel braiding provides durability and abrasion resistance, not additional internal pressure capacity or reduction in expansion.

In heavy duty hydraulic systems steel braiding is only used in sections that are subjected to increased abrasion. Even in systems that need high response like precision hydraulic actuators.

Any flexible line system is going to have expansion under pressure, steel braided outer sheath or not. The sheath does not reduce internal pressure expansion.

The whole "steel braided brake lines" thing is marketing shit sold so people are willing to pay more money for something that does exactly what a new set of stock lines would do.

This is the only real way to reduce expansion in your hydraulic lines. This is why cars have hardline to the wheel well then flexible rubber line to the caliper. Flexible line over the length of the chassis to each wheel would have a large amount of expansion volume and making braking very mushy.

On a motorcycle the calipers are so close to the master cylinder hardline doesn't make much sense. But if you were a real stickler you could run hardline from the master cylinder down your forks to the tube junction then flex to the caliper and flex from the hardline to the caliper and this would eliminate about two feet or so of potential expansion from the hydraulic system, but it's not really worth the effort for such a short run.

very nice garage, would use too

>>14668601
as my only bike I wouldn't want to own a supersport either, then I'd probably take a majestätisches Schweinswal-Motorrad. But as one of many in my garage, yes
>>
>>14668622
I also agree with your first point, though any 500cc 2smoke would do me.
>>
>>14668575
Neither. The 08 was pretty shit motor wise in that it was peaky and not street friendly. Also lazy handling.

The 09 sounded cool but was underpowered compared to it's competition and the bike handled like shit. Probably the worst handling R1. Needed a lot of work suspension and motor wise to get it on the level.

Both of them geared too tall for the street and both were uncomfortable.

The 08/09 CBR1000RR was much much better out of the box. Torquey motor with good top end, TRE gave you a cheap 10-15hp up top for 165+whp, sized like a 600 and handles almost like a 600. Good turn in, stable, geared properly for the street, comfy, etc.

There is no reason you should restrict yourself to an R1 of that vintage as they were not good bikes for the money compared to what else you can get for that same amount of money.

You can get a K5/K6 Gixxer 1000 for that money and have literally one of the best literbikes ever made before the modern crop of $16,000+ electronic nanny equipped bikes.

What are some negotiating tips for buying a bike? How much can I reasonably expect them to take off the price?
What are the hidden fees (delivery fee, dealer fee, etc.)?
When a dealership sells a bike do they just order another one?

Can anyone identify the bike in this picture? I saw this while walkin home and wanted to get a better idea of what it was when I got home. I don't visit /o/ often, but lately I have been interested in getting into motorcycles.

I was thinking about getting my first bike, and it'd be great if I can snag something cheap off the dude who owns it since it seems to have been sitting there a while (grass has grown up through the spokes). But I suppose that would raise concerns as to whether or not it works? Anyway, thanks again, /dbt/

The 08+ CBR is one of the best bikes of the last decade. Those years or R1 are some of the worst of that decade. Literally the only redeeming factor for the 09+ R1 was it sounded cool with pipes.

Yamaha's fit-finish is good and their machining is awesome. But as a package those bikes are bad.

Because you'd be putting a lot of money in a bike that you might drop, crash, break, etc. Plus your insurance would be fairly high.
A used bike from craigslist may be reliable if the previous owner took care of it you just gotta look around and be meticulous when you look at their bikes, cheap, and low in insurance if you buy an older used one.

I'm a lot more comfortable leaning already, I'm hitting the few local "corners" at 70-80 instead of 60 and feel like I could lean further no problem. Old webm from the ones I'm talking about, on the GS 500. Didn't feel safe because square tires and even more noob than now.

For some reason when I'm approaching left hand turns I am way less confident than in right turns, even though they're way less sharp. What is the reason for that and how do I change it? Might have something to do with not wanting to get too close to the edge of the road before corner entry whereas in right turns you just get over to the middle line. Or maybe it's because I have to look across the oncoming lane?
>>
>>14668965

After much riding and analyzing my BP I realized I move less to one side on the bike due to having to control the throttle with the right hand. Back then I was on the MT with enormous bars.

Turning to the left I would use the whole tyre, turning to the right I'd always have 1mm or 2mm of chicken strips.

I'm not sure if it's because I leaned myself on the bike more or because I didn't feel as confident to go as fast turning right.

Anyway, next time you're trying to git gut, pay attention to your throttle hand, maybe it can be playing a part.
>>
>>14669039
That's the weird thing, u-turns are no problem at all, it's only left turns on two-lane roads. My lane just looks so damn narrow when approaching them.

>Maybe it's also because the two times I crashed were in right hand turns
Can confirm one of them. Also FKG died in a right hand turn.
F
>>
That's pretty weird. My right u-turns are horrendous and I'm right handed, but that's probably because traffic in the U.S is on the right side, and a u-turn makes you turn left. All me practice is in cul'de'sacs
