Hey /o/, I need advice.
I went to a used car dealer to look at an '06 Honda Civic with 145k miles for $4k. I looked at the car a bit and saw some white grime underneath the car which threw me off. The car looked fine otherwise except for some paint damage on the hood. I did a test drive but he didn't let me drive on the highway even though it was right by the dealership.
Anyways, I didn't feel confident about the car or the dealer because he tried to get me to pay for stupid fees and he contradicted himself about financing rates. What should I do different next time? Should I avoid dealers who act shady? What could the white grime be?
General car buying advice thread I guess.

>don't buy from dealership
>if so, with signed warranty where you expressly indicate whatever you find in the car (so that you have leverage if you find anything else)
>if so, again, get the car to a garage so that a full inspection is performed on it
>specially smog/ fumes since it's "invisible" and not everyone would notice when just driving
>even if smog isn't inspected in your country/ state since a thorough analysis will tell you if the engine is doing anything funny
>avoid that specific dealer at least
I should know some more but surely someone else would help. the white thing could be a prelude to a nightmare or an afternoon and some cheap parts. stay away anyhow, even though hondas are usually cool.

The guy told me to bring a mechanic (wtf?). So should I call a dealership ahead of time to arrange an inspection with a certified mechanic?

Don't buy a shitbox that old from a dealer. Post your local Craigslist. Can you spend any more than 4k?

I don't want to spend more than $4.5 after taxes. My local Craigslist is newjersey.craigslist.org

Luxury cars are out of my budget and I can't driven manual.

All of those are clearly in your budget. You can afford maintenance if you have a job. Learn manual.

bimmers in that condition go for like 8,000 in CA. I would buy that in a heartbeat. Fuck this place
$4,000? You should be able to get under 100,000mi. It'll be hard to do, but you can do it. Dont be afraid to walk away because a dealer tries to get you attached emotionally to the car. Not being able to drive stick? Learn on the spot. I taught a girl how to drive a cobalt in 10 minutes.

Don't be a faggot. People should learn manuals on their own terms. You'll learn it better if you actually WANT to.
I'll look through your craigslist.

I don't really know what you /want/ so I just went with some economy cars and looked up various brands.
