I've always wondered, if you can squeeze more power out of a two stroke engine then why don't more purpose-built racecars use them? I get why road cars don't as they pollute significantly more, but who gives a shit when the only purpose in a race is to go fast?

You also couldn't drive the zonda r at any of the race tracks due to noise regulations.
Modern racing is regulated to all shit.
rule #1, no 2 strokes.

If they ever make a clean burning lubricant, will 2 strokes make a comeback?

If it burns, no. You would have to add a lub pump and res.
At least with oil it was built in.

You dont need to burn lubricant in a two-stroke, though.

I mean cleaning burning oil.

The EPA killed two-stroke diesels to death in the 1980's.

because power is heavily dependent on shape of the exhaust. and it seems there's a problem with getting enough fresh air into cylinder.
and they work on fucking magic

because the intake charge must displace the exhaust gas within the same stroke
to do this most effectively requires heavy exploitation of swirl
that in turn requires lower piston speeds and especially shaped piston heads

it is unclear to me if having double the power strokes per revolution is enough to offset this

Doesnt the EPA only get to tell you what to do on public roads? Because I don't see the problem there.

The big issue is that because of the fuel which is lost in the scavenging phase of of the 2 stroke cycle, they typically have issues with fuel efficiency. Since pit strategy is such a huge part of racing, and being able to avoid a singe pit stop can win a race 2 strokes aren't really viable for racing anymore. In the past they used to dominate the motoGP scene. And for fun I'll leave this right here.
