Were the late 80's and 90's a better time for sports cars? particularly Japanese ones? or is it better now given cars like the nsx and gtr are faster than ever
>>
Faster does not equal better.

> inb4 muh feels
>>
>>14136427
Ya like how rwd is better than fwd

Just because the new civic is faster than a c5 z06 doesn't mean it's not complete shit and gook garbage
>>
Now is a better time than any other for sports cars.

Only 'muh nostalgia' fools will tell you otherwise.
>>
>>14136427
This. The new NSX drives like a mid-engined hybrid Accord. The R35 is too technological and sterile. History will remember the 90s and early 2000s (S2k) as the peak of Japanese sports cars.
>>
That era was one of the worst for all cars aside from the mid to late 70s, new fuel injection systems teething issues, OBD1, styling was really hit or miss. It seems like the Japanese sports were good, but were they actually good, or is it because they were just better than all the FWD garbage Japan turned out in the later half of the 90s and 00s?
>>
Better? Questionable.
More interesting? Absolutely.
>>
>>14136419
fact is no one cares if the new ones are faster which defeats the purpose

Why do you think the tuning scene is still composed of 80s to 90s and initial d cars still listed over
Jap cars were just inherently more sporty across the board, after Y2K they started giving up on making tunable sporty commuters and just locked everything up in a "true" sports car offering while churning out shit for the masses
Now we end up with s2k, miata, wrx sti, evo, and loosely the gt86 as a company's only decent sporty car , and everything else can be shit for all they care
Honda is still trying because they're autistic over making the BEST FF CAR EVER but they get raped by nanny safety laws and a head honcho who doesn't give that much of a shit of making their "lower class" commuter a sport car
Mazda might be coming back but only time will tell

The bubble burst in y2k and only now are jap companies trying to regain footing
The company that offers a cheap rwd platform will get all the love, see FRS/BRZ/86
that car is mediocre but it's rwd so guess what every car enthusiast who wants to live out dagumi fantasy but wants a car that "just werks" clamored too

yes however supras and skylines were all very expensive cars once you take inflation to account. This is the mistake many people made.

These cars were always halo cars they weren't the average commuter car and were uncommon . this is no different today with the GTR being the only real sports car nissan offered. In the late 80's this was the r32. People tune these old ones simply because they are relatively cheap.

Japan was just as boring back then as it was today
>>
>>14136586
I'm comparing their lower tier stuff (s13/14,civic si, lady z, hachiroku,pulsar,mx-x, lude,)
Even lower tier
I'd argue that common shitboxes back in the day were sportier than contemporaries

yes.

Breddy much, the japs where sinking so much money into cars, R&D and playing racing cars that they managed to blow their budgets.
Toyota was in some trouble, Nissan was completely wrecked and got bought out by Renault, Mitsu and Sube where having to scale back and Mazda was being whipped by Ford.

It comes out in a few months. Early reviewers deemed it a soulless appliance. Not the typical pre-launch feedback of "just needs some refinement," etc.

There's already car reviews of the new NSX idiot. It has nothing in common with the old NSX and shouldn't carry the name.

Now is a good time for sport ENGINES and there have been advances in suspension and tires too but the cars themselves are too heavy and ugly these days.

Restomod is the ticket - or something like Factory 5.

Performance-wise the newer models will shit on their predecessors (with exception to the RX-8). However, also there's less choice in the market.

The Japs used to crank out all sorts of shit; to name a few Toyota pumped out several RWD models with the 1JZ (Altezza, Chaser, Soarer), an AWD turbo wagon, and other cool shit like the Celica GT-Four and Sera, which just looked cool. This isn't even including things like the AE86, AE111, MR2 and Celica.

Now your options are the Aurion or the 86. The SF-R might be another possibility years down the track.

Mitsubishi is out of the running (no more Evo, Galant VR4, GTO/3000GT, FTO and Eclipse), Subaru only offers the WRX/STi and the BRZ, and Mazda only has the Miata. The MX-6 is dead, and the RX-7 and 8 are dead. Honda only has the Civic Type R to offer now, or the NSX if you've got deep pockets and even then it's no longer a RWD midship.

Likewise, Nissan's sports car lineup consists of the 370Z, V36 Skyline (Infiniti G37 to the Americans) and the GT-R. Never again will there be a lightweight 4cyl RWD coupe like the Silvia, nor will we get homologation models like the Pulsar GTi-R. Skylines are now rebadged Infinitis and the GT-R is forever out of our reach.

It would be a godsend if manufacturers started selling the rolling shells for their old models. Never going to happen because it wouldn't be economically viable but imagine the possibilities.
>>
>>14136419
In terms of style and car culture, yeah probably.

In terms of actual performance, lolno, the GT86 is widely shit on as being a slow shitbox but it will run rings around almost any other car from that era excepting cars that cost nearly 3x as much in real dollars (like the r32 or the supra, both of which had MSRP near 60k in current dollars after inflation)

Even with all the pigfat that comes from modern safety regulation, cars are faster and better handling, and there are more safety nets in case of fuckups (traction control, abs).
