Why does Scion even exist again..? does it exist outside the US?

Toyota = Parent company
Lexus = Luxury brand
Scion = Hipster brand???

Why didn't they just sell the GT86 under the Toyota brand?
>>
>>14110492
It's the low end/youth oriented branch of Toyota
A rebrand to seem different from their parent's cars
Toyota in and of itself doesn't convey "sportiness", so they made this fresh, edgy, new brand
>>
>>14110427
it's shit lmao
>>
>>14110492
in my country scion does not exist and the 86/frs is toyota branded. also we get rhd jdm versions of the cars
>>
>>14110427
"Hello fellow hip young kids" the brand.
Saturn style get in, pay, drive out buying is neato though
>>
meh.
>>
Pointless. With exception to the FR-S (86) their entire lineup is still FWD econoboxes.

>Scion is a brand of vehicles produced by Toyota for the North American market. Founded in 2002, Scion's long-term goal is to appeal to Generation Y consumers.

I know what a Toyota is.

People give Scion shit, but the FRS, TC, and IA are some of the best driver's cars in their price range.

I would rather drive a scion than any economy hyundai, dodge, Nissan, mitsubishi, or Chevy.
>>
>>14110605
Isn't the iA just a Mazda2?
>>
>>14110645
Yes. But Mazda doesn't sell the mazda2 in America.

Doesn't make it any less of a driver's car.
>>
>>14110605
>the FRS, TC, and IA are some of the best driver's cars in their price range.

Maybe the FRS.

For the price of a tC you can get a Fiesta ST, and the iA is only $3K cheaper.
>>
>>14110605
I hate the tc, I see them riced out so hard around here but it's just a two door FWD fucking corolla.
>>
>>14110657
Goddamn, I didn't say it was the best. We get it, the fiesta st is fun. Go back to reading your motortrend magazine.

>>14110659
It's a modern celica. Have you looked at some of the other cars in its price range?
>>
>>14110667
Yes, the Fiesta ST is fun. Also, the tC is fucking overpriced.
>>
>>14110682
The msrp for the fiesta is also 2k more.

And the TC will probably be more reliable than the fiesta in the long run.
>>
>>14110689
>And the TC will probably be more reliable than the fiesta in the long run.

Well, yeah, because it's a Corolla.

>The msrp for the fiesta is also 2k more.

Which is relatively insignificant for a car that you'll likely be financing.

The tC is great if you want an economy car coupe.

Any car for under 20k will be an economy car before anything else.

I have never tried to imply that the tc is better than the fiesta, but you keep acting like I do. Did you get touched by a Toyota when you were younger?
>>
>>14110753
Yes, and you have offended my honor.

Merry Christmas, m8.
>>
>>14110427
The real reason the brand exists is so that Toyota can experiment with financing strategies that they couldn't do with the whole Toyota lineup. Things like Scion iFi (no/low credit buying) and Pure Price are tests for the future of the industry as a whole. Pure Price, as it is implemented, is a total scam though.
>>
>>14110657
Everyone seems to misunderstand where the tC stands in the market. It's competitors would be Focus and the Civic. The regular non-ST, non-Si versions. For the money, the tC is the better car.
>>
>>14110427
I think the logo is cool I just wish they made cars I was interested in

they're still sort of doing what they always have; make cool-ish looking cars for dirt cheap to appeal to kids as their "first car"

but unlike when the brand launched, their target audience is much more broke and their parents much less likely to get them a car and in general they're far less reliant on getting a car.

>tfw drove a first gen tC for the first time the other day
>it was more fun than i expected. decent handling, lively steering (if light), and some low down pep off the line, would daily/10
>>
>>14110492
I think Scion was originally founded as a brand for Toyota to market its sportier cars under, both to appeal to the tuner scene and to have a way to bring Toyota's more 'Japanese' cars like the bB to the American market.

Its marketing was aimed at Gen X/Millenials when it launched in the early-mid 2000s, and they still do stuff that more or less appeals to tuners, but ironically many of its buyers have been older people in their 40s and 50s who just like simple compacts.

On that end, Scion has launched the iA, a rebadged Mazda2 sedan (which was discontinued by Mazda in the US citing low sales), and the iM hatchback, succeeding the xA and xD. The iQ, Toyota's effort to compete with the Smart Fortwo, was unsuccessful and discontinued this year, while the tC and ever-popular FR-S still continue.
>>
>>14111239
Scion was originally created specifically to market cars to young people. Project Genesis was the prototype for Scion. For Project Genesis, Toyota took 3 cars they made and marketed them to young people. The W30 Toyota MR2, the Toyota Echo, and the Toyota Celica.
The Echo failed to capture the attention of youth because it wasn't cool or quirky enough.
The MR2 captured the attention of the youth, but dealer markups because "SPORTSCAR!" kept it out of the reach of its intended market.
The Celica meanwhile was an immediate hit with youth being the perfect blend of sporty, stylish, quick, and quirky.
Project genesis ended in 2001 as a failure, but the lessons learned were applied to Project Exodus, later renamed Scion. It's why all their cars are quirky, practical hatches (excluding the FR-S and the iA). It's why they heavily advertise no haggle pricing. It's why the Scion tC, Scion's best selling model, was the direct replacement for the Celica.
Ironically, Scions first big hits, the original xA and xB, were based on the failed Echo, using the same chassis, engine, and transmissions.
>>
Isn't that new 5door hatchback just a second gen mazda 3?
>>
>>14111717
No. It's a Toyota auris or something like that
>>
>>14110498
They could have just not stopped selling sports cars. That would have improved their image.
>>
>>14111302
>>14111239
I don't understand how millenials suddenly have no recognition of toyota as a sporting brand.
they're not exactly an entire generation behind us.

As a Toyota/scion technician almost every scion is a just out of high school or college student's car.

Neither can afford to maintain their cars outside of Toyota Care/Scion Boost free maintenance.

However most FRS owners shell out the needed maintenance costs and buy alot of Dealer accessories like TRD products.

I used to own a Scion xb/bB and was seriously the best car I ever owned.
But the only people I ever seen with them were old people. The Captain style seats and space was probably the best selling point.

As for any generation of tC, they are shit. A heavy 2 door camry basically.
Its 2.4l 2AZ-FE a oil burning china outsourced failure of an engine.

To say the tC replaced the Celica is wrong.

But like other anon's said, its just a low teir of econo cars from toyota.
Except the FRS.

>>
>>14111950
to rebadge right you gotta rebadge everything including the steering wheel badge, airbag badge, keyfob, etc

really not worth the effort
>>
>>14111959
No. It's based on the European Toyota Avensis sedan, which uses an updated variant of the 2000-2005 Celica chassis.

>>14111916
The ONLY thing the tC uses from the Camry is the engine. 2005-2010 tCs use the 2AZ-FE. 2011-present tC's use a 2.5L 2AR-FE from the Camry. 2011+ cars are better in every single way, and I drove a first gen and a second gen back to back. It's not based on the Camry. It's too small. The tC is about the size of the Celica or a Corolla
>>
>>14111916
>As a Toyota/scion technician almost every scion is a just out of high school or college student's car.

Not even remotely true.

According to every Scion sales training I've ever attended, the average age of a Scion buyer is 32 and Toyota is 50. Young people buy used cars, which is the big problem for the brand.

There are even third-party investigations which suggest that the average Scion buyer is even older:

See tons of kids with Tassels hanging from their rear view mirrors in tCs. I also said most, not all.

>>14112079
The new 2AR-FE is the motor they started using not until the 2nd gen tC. Nearly every "Red top" 2AZ-FE with serial numbers 1A suffers from the oil consumption problem that Toyota hasn't formerly released a recall on for piston ring failure.

Anything with the 2AZ-FE, Camry, Rav4, tC, 2nd Gen xB and some Matrix are getting new pistons or shortblocks daily.

But toyota takes months to get the needed parts. So buyers beware.
>>
>>14112676
>The new 2AR-FE is the motor they started using not until the 2nd gen tC.
Which is what I said.
I didn't like the 2AZ-FE. They had so many better engines to use.
>>
>>14112305
Also, if you got the TRD supercharger option (a rebadged Vortech centifugal unit), 2005-2010 tC's hit 201 HP. They discontinued the option and kit after 2007 due to problems with the bearings destroying the blower from the inside out. You can get better bearings for the supercharger to fix the problem.
