Hey /o/.
I'm getting Interviewed at auto zone tomorrow for a job placement. Do you guys recommend working there?
>>
idk i go to advance auto cuz coupons
>>
Eh, it's a job, just don't turn it into a career there.
>>
My bro works there, he says it's pretty tight, bro.
>>
>>14083527
> asking a bunch of unemployed neck beards on the internet about your enjoyment opportunities
>>
>>14083527
I enjoyed working there. There's going to be a bunch of stupid people that expect you to be able to fix their car just from hearing the year make and model, but other than that it's good. Get to help people, and you're always around automotive stuff.
>>
>>14083527
Light mechanics is the worst career possible
Older brother chose this career and i saw first hand the carnage it brought upon him, from the near minimum wage and shit work
I chose the smarter path and am doing engineering
I suggest you do the same if this is your pathway

I just started working there 3 weeks ago and today was my first negative experience
>guy comes in for oil for a 2010 kia soul
>doesn't know engine size or type or anything
>coworker goes outside to look at his oil cap and comes back in
>guy starts ranting about how synthetic oil ruined his engine
>coworker is high-school kid and looks panicked so I go see if I can help
>dudes going crazy asking about if this is even the right type of oil he needs?
>try to look it up on computer but can't since he doesn't even know what engine he has
>go back outside and double check oh wow holy shit it's still 5w20 look at that
>go back in dudes still ranting and raving saying an autozone employee recommended him synthetic oil and ever since then his car makes noises when it's cold
>okay.jpeg
>coworker recommends lucas oil additive
>dude flips his shit saying were supposed to be automotive experts and how can we recommend the wrong oil and break his car like this
>dude we looked up your oil but u don't know shit a out your car so we used your vin, and physically went outside and checked the cap twice what more do u want
>hurrrr so and so used to work here and he recommended me X synthetic and ever since then my car makes noises when it's cold you guys are the experts not me
>starts asking random questions about radiators and thermostats and carbs and shit "testing our knowledge"
>politely tell him to cut the shit, pay for his fuckin oil or leave.
>pays and halfway through transaction after money's exchanged hands says he has a gift card in his car
>whatever man
>>

>comparing engineering career to a fucking minimum wage job

Are you legit retarded?
>>
>>14083770
I'm actually an active duty marine and got the job part time as just a parts delivery driver but I help out in the store whenever I can. God I do not miss retail one bit lol. But I can keep my cool around retards pretty well, it's generally 97 of what the military is. That's dude problem was that he bought a kia soul
>>
>>14083786
>implying their not the same aspect
Mechanical engineering or electrical engineering can both be had in an automotive industry, my dads step brother is an electrical engineer and works for holden he was contracted by gm to fix some electrical faults in one of their cars so they flew him over and let him diagnose whats wrong with the fucker
>>
>>14083847
You're comparing a fucking career that takes 4 years minimum of university to a minimum wage job for teenagers and people in school.

Are all people in engineering this autistic?

Here in australia a light mechanics course takes 3 years to complete compared to 4 for an engineering course
Please calm down youre frightening me and the children

I don't know about where you live, but autozone is not minimum where I'm at. I got hired at $15.25/hr(a full $8 more than minimum), and I'm not even a manager.

Get real. It's retail/sales.
An autozone job is 100% putting things on shelves, selling WITTDTJR, and pushing the COC
>>
>>14084843
Auto parts are part of the automotive industry. Selling them makes you part of the industry. Parts manufacturers are part of the industry and all they do is makes parts and sell them.
>>
>>14083527
You applying for red shirt or grey shirt?

Go grey shirt, you can string together 2 sentences in a internet post so you're obviously qualified.

Be prepared to recieve zero training, get asked stupid questions and abused by customers, get screwed over by the company's shitty logistics losing parts and sending shit to the wrong store, be always understaffed and given 1 hour to do a task that actually takes 4 to do properly, and get yelled at/hours cut if you can't manage to get 1 out of every 10 customers you ring up to add-on the monthly special (which will be waste-of-money garbage 99% of the time)

That said, the pay is slightly better than most other jobs in which you have to do all those same things.

Just try to avoid being the guy that gets picked to install batteries/wipers/lights.

Get into the commercial department if you can. Much better staffing situation and lower pressure. Commercial driver is the easiest fucking shit ever, and you never have to work a closing shift or clean the bathrooms.
>>
>>14084864
That's like saying the guy who stocks produce at Wal*Mart is "in the agriculture industry"

It's retail. Work inside the company and you see, at all levels, it's generic retail. You could substitute any widget for the car parts and the job would be exactly the same.

And all management cares about are your sales skills. They couldn't give a fuck about your automotive skills/knowledge.
>>
Ever since I started working on cars/trucks it's been really hard to take cashiers at parts stores seriously. Does anybody else have this problem? I can't help but smirk the whole fucking time I come across these pimple faced children.

I have to say though if you can find a good old school napa store with a machine shop and service shop in the back then you're fucking golden.
>>
>>14084882
Going outside and hanging out with customers is my favorite part of the job.You get to breath some fresh air and get away from the faggots hanging around inside. Plus you can take your time, and it's like having an extra break. And being a smoker it allows me a chance to snag a cig break.
>>
>>14084916
>liking customers
Not a word I like to throw around, but get a load of this normie.
>>
>>14084900
I do work there, and you're wrong as fuck. They very much want you to know what you're doing/talking about. Or maybe you live in some nigger infested area where the stores are abandoned by corporate.

Everyone that is involved in any business involving automobiles, is part of the automotive industry. Everyone from car salesmen and detailers, to the engineers that design them.

>>14084927

Being that I've been active in the car scene around here for years, I know, and most often am friends with the customers. Why wouldn't I want to hang out with them? On top of all that, everyone here is friendly as fuck. And I'm proud to be a "normie". It allows me to do things like have a job, have friends, have sex with live human women, and not sperg out when everything isn't exactly like my fantasy.
>>
>>14084963
The last job I had before I quit work to go back to college was being an Autozone grey shirt. I did it for 3 years.

They talk a good talk about wanting you to know your shit, helping you get your worthless ASE Parts Specialist certification (wasn't that test a fucking joke, omg) and everything. But when it comes down to making choices for who to give raises/promotions too, who gets the best shifts, who gets favored treatment... it's always the guy who doesn't know shit about cars but can bullshit his way to a 60% checkout challenge rate and 400% on wittdtjr. And no matter how much arcane automotive knowledge you can conjure up and wow your coworkers/direct bosses with, you're still gonna get pulled aside, chewed out, and stuck on closing shift for not moving enough shop towels.

I liked some of the customers. But the vast majority were complete assholes who wanted significant diagnosis work done and got angry when you couldn't pinpoint the problem from "it made this funny noise once." People who come in with their wiring harness melted to shit and want you to rewire their entire fucking car to get their turn signals working because "I can't get pulled over, I got warrants." People who were like "Come on, can't you just give me one fuze for free, and why won't you just use that that magic tool I know you have that you can just wave over the fusebox to find out which one is blown." Crackheads cramming car batteries into their comically oversized purses. People who want you to buy them a new engine because they changed their oil and now it's "driving all funny"

And everyone who thinks THEY are the most important customer, no matter how many people are in line in front of them. It's like "dude, I'm changing guy A's battery, then putting on guy B's wipers, then doing a code scan on guy C, THEN I'll help you with your shit. They'll literally come over while you're working on one guy's car and try to get you to stop so you can work on their car instead
>>
>>14083906

I had a part-time gig as a waiter while I was active duty Army. It's not uncommon at all.
>>
>>14085089

First job, son?
Welcome to employment.

I make friends with my managers and their managers in every job. Learn to play the game.
>>
>>14085089
I'm not going to argue with you, that sounds awful. But like I said, none of that happens here. I live in a magical place where everyone is polite and friendly to each other. I was a technician for the better part of two decades, have a few years retail, can sell the shit out of some WITTDTJR and COC, and they treat me as such. I get paid a lot more than everyone else, I always get praised by everyone, even the higher ups, and not even because of my sales skills, but rather for the fact that I can diagnose a customer's vehicle from "it made this funny noise once." And I go the "extra mile" at every chance I get, be it stopping at broken down cars and helping get them running, or by rewiring an entire customer's car to get their turn signals working, because I don't want them to get pulled over and jailed over some trumped up warrant.
>>
I used to work for AutoZone and now I am a manager at O'Reilly Auto Parts. Working auto parts is not a bad gig at all, and you'd be surprised how many of us used to work as professional mechanics. I did 5 years working at a Nissan Dealership after graduating UTI (yea I know, they suckered me in). Was making ok wages but no benefits. Got hurt outside of work while snowboarding and got let go. Starting working at AutoZone and 6 months in I started making more then I did at the dealership and had full benefits.
>>
Make sure you always ask people on a scale of 1 to 10 what is their favorite color of the alphabet in order to get the right brake fluid for their transmission.
>>
>>14084462
The dudes daughters were their literally rolling their eyes and apologizing and being like "come on dad let's go just pay and shut up" he was like a 50 something year old Mexican with no English

I'm not gonna lie to u guys I have very limited experience on cars I started maintaining my own about a year ago using a Haynes manual some forums and a basic hand tool set. I work on turrets for 8 wheeled light armor vehicles so there's very little crossover but enough to get me the job apparently

My favorite part is going outside to help people pull a battery or whatever their doing. I like learning and turning wrenches not so much the cataloging and customer service. But I'm ultra polite to customers though because we're so close to my base I don't want anyone from higher to hear some bullshit about me being rude to customers and bringing discredit to the Marine corps or whatever the fuck
>>
>>14085238
Well you don't have to worry about being a know it all with cars. AZ and AAP are mostly just hiring bodies in stores. You'll learn as you go. Most (keyword is most) don't know shit about their own cars, and it's somehow your fault you don't know what they drive. Thank god I don't work the counter anymore.
>>
>>14085271
I'm doing my best to learn luckily I got a pretty knowledgeable team who are also really friendly and teach me shit Every day. Also I didn't know this but most of my friends work on their own cars and trucks so I get invited to come over for some wrenchin' all the time which is always great
>>
>>14085171
are you store manager or RSS?
i just got off closing an hour ago lol
>>
>>14085137
Oh no, I played the game. I got my sweet-ass shifts, I went out drinking with my bosses, I got my ass promoted. It certainly helped that I knew my shit and had customers asking for me by name on my off days

But all the poor suckers under me, who knew their shit but couldn't lie well enough to sell? They were fucked.

And when the regional manager who you never interact with comes to town and tours your store, he can't stop sucking the cock of the guy who can make up the biggest fucking tall tale about fuel system cleaners. Asks my boss why I get the day shift and the overtime.

Fucking glad I'm out of retail now.

I hear people at all three of my old AZ stores are still asking for me. Heh.
>>
>>14085288
Sounds like a good crew to be with. I hated AZ where I worked at before. The DM was an major asshole.
>>
>>14085336
Yea well the guy who got me the job has been my childhood friend since 2nd grade, then there's 2 other dudes who I already knew beforehand so they're cool to me, a soldier who I shoot the shit with every now and then, high-school stoner kid who doesn't bother No one, and a older lady who it turns out her daughter was deployed with me one time so she's nice

Lol the DM chick tried to intimidate me the first week their with a super butch attitude and violent handshake kek. "DM's" in my other job are like division Sergeants Majors with multiple deployments who have killed more people then the plague. Needless to say I wasn't impressed
>>
>>14085376
The DM would always come in and complain about the low scores for the stupid little grease packets and other things like that. I didn't care cause it was a shit job.
>>
>>14085326
(continued)
But the thing is, there's only so much that getting your boss to like you can do. Unless you a phenomenal salesman, and I mean bad-ass, you will never, NEVER rise above the level of store-manager at autozone. And store manager is a pretty shit job, to be honest It means 70, 80 hour weeks on salary with no overtime pay, pulling down the same paychecks as your PSM's. It's not a job you want, except as a stepping stone to DM.

I am not a phenomenal salesman. Not even a good one. My social skills suck. This right here is about the level I've been able to develop by age 33; being insulted on 4chan and replying for some goddamn reason. I honestly have no idea how I got a wife.

I did actually enjoy putting in batteries and slapping on wiper blades (except for all the me firsting customers who would interrupt me). I could do planograms and flexograms all day long. But those are redshirt work, and dead-end as shit. You don't get anywhere in the company by doing that work. And it means that when you're done "going the extra mile", you get back to the counter and the line is 20 customers deep because there is only ever, EVER 2 employees scheduled because AZ's labor budget is stingy as fuck. And every single one of those customers is pissed as fuck from the waiting and will probably give you shit because "I saw you fucking around outside while we were waiting for help in here"

I helped customers. I had all the pins, including an extra miler. But the job was just plain shit in the end. I couldn't keep any decent salesmen because any salesman good enough to hit good numbers at Autozone would be better off working for commission somewhere else; selling cars or real estate or jewelry. The revolving door of bums off the street I had to train were barely literate and had no concept of customer service or inventory management.

I don't know why I fucking come here. I just rant and do nothing. I should go back to smoking weed and playing vidya.
>>
>>14085833
Did it seriously take you two fucking hours to type that?
>>
>>14085951
No, I left and came back. Tried to go to sleep, actually, but I couldn't.
>>
>>14083527
>shit retail job: automotive edition
>>
>>14083527
No

-you have to pay for your own workshirts
-you're required to change batteries which makes your shirts filthy
-you can get fired for accepting tips unless you put it in the register
-you have to do a humiliating YMCA style dance every time there's a staff meeting
-you won't get shit for hours
-all your coworkers will be dumb teenage stoners and 50 something failures at life that won't know shit about cars
-training sucks ass

Autozone is listed as America's 4th worst company to work for, with good reason. If you get hired, ask to get hired as a parts delivery driver for the commercial department, at least you get out of the store and drive around on the company dime

Yup
>you're required to change batteries which makes your shirts filthy
>Used have to do headlights too.
>you can get fired for accepting tips unless you put it in the register\
This is some ol' bullshit. You're right, but it's still BS, Helps to have a manager that don't GAF (which I had)
>you have to do a humiliating YMCA style dance every time there's a staff meeting
Lol yeah, skipped out on so many of those.
>you won't get shit for hours
Yep, and if they don't want you there, you'll get schedule two days a week, usually truck day and sat or sun.
>all your coworkers will be dumb teenage stoners and 50 something failures at life that won't know shit about cars
Depends. Those that don't know shit usually don't last long.
>training sucks ass
Yeah. So glad I left that shit hole.
