Ran a 10.931 on my best pull on ET Streets running 3.55 gears. I think I can shave a bit off my 60' and ET this year as I switched to 3.23 and went even wider on the rears (8 to 9.5). look at the torque figures, a Ford Ranger with a 3litre turbo diesel got 305 nm of torque yet only 135 bhp. Most passenger sedans get more than this but the Ranger is 2 tonnes. Yet this car is used all the time for towing boats and car trailers.

Not at all. The older dodge half tons were good to about 7-8k pounds. It'll pull a shit box just fine. And to note, I have used my fathers 98 Ram B2500 van with a 318 to pull the Fury to the strip once. Not even a struggle.

That was the goal. I have about 2700 in just the rear end, another 500 in a driveshaft, 1900 worth of transmission clutch packs and stall converter with transbrake. The 512 cost me 5300 to build to this spec. The car cost me 625 cash value as I traded a gun for the car and paid 625 for the gun. A factory 440 was included and it was very tired thus the bore and stroke. Pic related, its the block I'm using for the 543, just got her line honed on cam and mains, new cam bearings, bored .060 over, sonic checked, head decked down by .005. And yes, it looks rusty because its sat for 3 weeks by I have builders butter in the litter bores, cam channel, cylinders, etc.

I'm making 570ish hp and 615ish tq to the crank now, dynos pit to 480ish/530ish. My aim, which is conservative for a 543, is 650 at the crank and 650tq. From what the guys I am getting my rotating assembly from are saying, I could get there with a hot street cam with more duration than what im running now. With my cam choice taken into consideration, ill be closer to 700hp at crank. However, as I said before, im using nitrous as a power adder over forced induction for two reasons: I can choose when the power comes in and can deactivate the system if there are restrictions. For that end of things, im going with a 3 stage dual plane fogged setup with a plate (125/250/500 shot) and two 15lb bottles.

If you want a race engine my boss still has a couple of GM small blocks he built for his race cars. His engine and car still holds some track records at Flemington Raceway (local racetrack that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore). He's running about 700-750hp and they redline at about 9300 rpm.

No need. I'm sticking with the BBM for the amount of torque I'm going to be able to produce. And I do not need 9300 RPM, this is a street car. If it reacts the same as my current big block does to similar modifications, ill be able to rev to about 6800-7000 RPM, make peak torque around 3800-4000 RPM, and peak out on HP around 6600 RPM putting me dead in the powerband going into third gear from second. I'll stick with a Mopar.

It barely hooks up as is, but I would like to put some bars in the bed. My dream is to roll cage it and connect the cage to the bed bars, having them run through the back plexiglass with rubber seals. Make it look clean, but I don't know if I have that much talent. I wish I could afford IRS, but it's not really a financial option. So I'm torn between a watts-link and a 3-link setup right now, I need to do more research on the two before I make my decision.
The current suspension setup is temporary, probably getting swapped out in the spring of '17 after I've made progress in other spots.

The problem you are having sounds just like one my bud had when he was done putting an engine in his jeep. Somehow the distributor got twisted 180 degrees out. Once we cranked the #1 cylinder back to top dead center on compression, we put the distributor in properly and it fired right up

so i got a bit of a newbie question here. i would have asked in the question thread, but i'd feel like i get a much more knowledgeable response here

im still trying to learn how to work on, and maintain these ancient NA motors, but before i get anywhere with ironing out any potential drivetrain issues, i need to single out the first thing.
basically, the car bogs out and dies, when i give some it throttle and i wouldnt know where to start. would it be an issue with the carb receiving too much fuel, too little, or is it more likely fuel lines that are the issue, or the fuel itself? the throttle has some stickiness to it as well, and i havent gotten around to fixing that.
really i havent had much time to put into this at all. it sucks but there is so much to learn, its pretty daunting.
any kind of feedback that would help point me in the right direction would help.

If you ever played with LEGO or something like that, carb rebuild should be a breeze. If you're loaded or have a crappy 2bbl carb anyway, just buy a new edelbrock or holley. There are online calculators to help you determine the best carb for each application

The rule of thumb is to never use more than and 1/8 inch of plastic filler in any area and NEVER put it on/over rust. Many of those show cars with mirror glass perfect paint jobs got that way with skim coats of filler and many many hours of sanding. Plastic filler is perfectly acceptable when used properly. In fact many times the last step before sealer primer+base coat+clear coat is to throw down a layer of filler primer and do even more sanding.

On the subject of tuning carbs. My 427 has a 750cfm Holley, and it's got some major idling issues. It's hard to start, and when it is running I have to use very light throttle to keep it at 1krpm, otherwise it stalls out.
If I try to tune idle mixture and it doesn't improve the situation, should I advance the timing a few degrees? I've heard BBCs with lopey cams like a lot of timing.

If fiddling with the idle mixture screws don't do anything, maybe there is a vacuum leak? Otherwise, advance the timing until it pings under load then back it off bit by bit until it stops.
Generally a big lopey cam will always have poor idle and vacuum, so you might just have to crank up the idle speed and deal with it for now

Assuming its a stock motorcraft carb.
Take off the top and unscrew the big screw that holds the venturi in place like pic related. Theres gonna be two holes that you need to blow compressed air into to clean out the fuel passages. 90% of the time its just gonna be a clogged passage causing it to bog. and make sure you have a new inline fuel filter so it doesn't happen every couple of weeks.

Sounds like the engine is running lean if you have to hold throttle to keep it running. Even with a fairly bug cam, my BBM idles alright (minus the lope). How large of a BBC we talking? Is it overbored/stroked at all? Sounds like idle jets may be gummed up if your idle air screw does nothing. What's your current ignition timing set at?.

Ah I didn't see the name splits! Being that its destroked but with a higher CR leads me to believe that you are running very lean and with a bit too much cam for the carb to run right with. I'd say try a carb rebuild if you want but your CR is way too high for most pump gas. Even with aluminum heads to have to run low lead 110 AvGas with a UCL to get the most power and avoid pinging and that's with an 850 CFM carb. If not, I have to richen my secondary, go to a bigger primary jet.
Seeing as you don't know your cam grind, if it was used for drag as it looks and the destroke lead me to believe its a max effort street/strip cam that lives in the upper rev range. It could be the fuel pump but that is doubtable as the car does run under throttle. Just to get it going until the LS is ready, you could do a rebuild and up your jets or switch to a larger carb as I said above but why bother unless you have someone that wants to see it run.

My dad's kit car has leather seats which are apparently from some really old race car that was scrapped and my granddad found, but the car is open topped and has lived outside under a cover for the last couple of years and the seats are now mouldy and hard.
We've put on some leather treatment which made them soft, but they got hard and the mould came back within days.
I have a feeling an auto upholsterer would upholster the seats, but would they make new seats if I give them one of the old seats to get measurements from?

So I went out to the storage unit and fired it up today, which was surprisingly easy with an almost dead battery.
Also took some pictures of my carb setup. So it's a Holley 750 double pumper, which should be enough carb for the displacement.

It can fit, but id be looking a a ton of fan work. It's uncommon enough putting a SBM into a S30 let alone a big block into an S130. Like I said, got a quote on the headers and I was looking at almost 1400 just for equal length headers using 1 7/8 pipe to 2.25 factory exhaust (use a 2-1 muffler for that stock look.)

I'm still planning on selling the whole drive-train for an LS/T56 towards the end of 2016, but in the meantime I'm going to have some fun with the bigblock. It's a learning experience, since I have absolutely no experience with a carb'd performance engine. I'll just factor in the ignition to the selling price.
Learning how to tune a carb properly is going to be interesting. I might have to up the primary jets if I can't solve the lean condition with just tuning, and I've never even disassembled a carb before.

Well anon, I'll help if I can at all. Carbs aren't bad to rebuild at all, just a fe small parts to keep track of. Jets are easy to change, and tuning a carb is not quite a lost art yet. The most 'famous' local Mopar guy named Art taught me how to tune a carb and how to sync multi-carb setups. The former takes practice, the latter is a cocksucker.

There was an 88 or 87 Ranger in my Auto Tech course and I must say I did like it. 4 liter V6 wasn't too much of a pain to work on, everything else is easy. So maybe you guys can help me with this. I did a 4bbl swap on my truck, it has a Ford 360, I decided to use an Autolite 4100 for the carb. So currently I can get it to start up, but it idles incredibly shitty, almost like it has a miss, and often dies while idling. It also does when I try to give it any gas. I don't suspect a vacuum leak because I can stall the engine by closing the choke plate. It also seems like my idle mixture screws don't do much when I tweak them. It seems like it's down to a carburetion issue (unless I have bigger problems like fried rings or burnt valves) but I can't seem to put my finger on it.

Oh yeah I feel like an idiot for not mentioning this, prior to my 4bbl swap I was out driving it and it developed a really bad miss that actually kept the truck from running at idle. It would run if I punched the accelerator but very poorly with lots of backfires out of the exhaust. I took it for a carb issue which is why I did the swap, since I had wanted to anyway. Now I feel like I'm missing some other issue that's causing my poor running since it's occurring with a different carb.

You still running a mechanical fuel pump? Could be on its way out and starving it for gas until you are at WOT. If you can get ahold of a fluid pressure gauge from AutoZone (bout 20-30 USD) put it in between the line from pump to carb and get a reading. Only other thing that could cause the stumbling that hard is timing being off by a ways, did it just sort of happen or did it gradually get worse?

The fuel pump is mechanical, but it's new and I actually had to put a regulator on because the pressure was too high. But I think I actually know what it is, I'm pretty sure the timing chain slipped. I checked by putting a breaker bar on the crank snout bolt and it looks like I have about 10° of slop before the rotor actually engages and starts moving.

That's not uncommon when you consider how many transfer points there are between the crank bolt and the rotor. It is highly, highly unlikely that the chain slipped. How many miles are on the engine? How much advance

No. Even if it is cheap, it is an old Luv with 180k on it at least. The bed rust may be the least of your worries as the frame could be gone. Also looks to be missing the front bumper as well, but that's not all that bad. And as for the brakes, you could be looking at a line but the way he makes it out to be you will be replacing 90% of the braking system (booster, master cyl, wheel cylinders, all lines). And that's all before you look at how tired the engine may or may not be. I only saw one reference to it in the ad and it said it was not original.
Tl;dr Be patient and keep searching. It will happen.

I know for a fact my dizzy hold down was tight, there was no way for it to rotate out of time. I've also got it set in the best spot possible right now as far as timing goes, less or more advance kills the engine, I can't say how much I'm running because I've been playing it by ear. As far as it being, "unlikely" for the chain to slip, one has to consider that the original timing sets on these engines (which I'm sure this one has) used nylon teeth on the sprockets, so they really weren't that durable as time went on. And the odometers on them only go to five digits, with mine reading 64k. That could mean 64k or 164k, either way more than enough for a timing set to wear out.
