what 'straya do you live in?
>>
>>13987755
>But an auto completely misses the point with a 318is.
What point is that?

The way I see it, anyone getting a 318 isn't actually into cars, they just want the BMW for the image without actually spending any money. They typically always want an auto because manuals are too hard for them.
>>
>>13987759
queensland, nsw or vic is my guess. i recall a lot of palm trees in vic when i was there last.
>>

>>
>>13987759
>not sure if retarded
Palms are native to 'Straya and found all over the country.
>>
>>13987771
>What point is that?
So you could drive it spiritedly with a direct drive between the flywheel and the drive wheels.
>The way I see it, anyone getting a 318 isn't actually into cars
Couldn't disagree more, given the subject is a 318is (a damn fun car to drive hard). Unless, as you say it was driven exclusively for posing reasons.
>>
>>13987815
>buying a 4cyl bargain bin BMW
>MUH MANUAL
>MUH DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Everyone knows they're trash and gutless, hard for it to handle when it's at a snails pace.

6cyl or bust to know what it really feels like.
>>
>>13987771
> anyone getting a 318 isn't actually into cars
or you know, they want a cheap DD that looks nice, handles well and dont want to fuck around with gears. who cares if its auto?
>>
>>13987830
>Everyone knows they're trash and gutless
All the less reason for a slushbox.
>hard for it to handle when it's at a snails pace
Still infinitely better with a mechanically driven transmission.
>6cyl or bust to know what it really feels like.
I've owned nothing but M30s when it comes to Bimmers, so while I can see your point, I still wouldn't turn my nose up at a lighter option as opposed to having 4.5 cast iron cylinders hanging over the front axle.

6cyl or bust to know what it really feels like.
>>
>>13987830
>has to be at least 6 cyl and manual to be good or handle at all

Silly me for forgetting that everyone on here is a race car driver that takes it to the max with gear changes and drifts around every corner on their way to work.

Some of us use cars to drive like normal people.
>>
>>13987759
>what 'straya do you live in?

Just about everywhere in Australia has palm trees lad. Beach Road, Melbourne, where the Spirit docks. They're all over Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth. There are a heap of them in Wagga. Hell, even Hobart has some in Sandy Bay... they don't grow real well there though.
>>
>>13987457
VY has an LS1. Can wind it up nicely. Way cheaper than VEs still too.

>>13987771
>>13987830
You're thinking of a 318i. 318is is different. I still wouldn't own a 4 cylinder E36, but yeah.

>>13987857
This too. A lot of those gutless slow 4 bangers can be good fun to drive as manuals. The whole autos-are-fine-now thing doesn't really apply when you're talking about a known bad automatic transmission from twenty years ago.

Makes no difference actually since I wasn't at fault. I get a discount from work and another small one for having a speed limiter heh.

Litre insurance is always way higher than smaller bikes. $120 a month is pretty good considering I'm twenty two. Youi wanted $800 a month though.

Most of it comes from my age and how many R1s get stolen in Australia.

remove headunit/face-plate
carefully pry it apart
once you remove the casing you'll get to the chip/board what ever the shit you wanna call it
desolder the LED(s) carefully and replace them with new ones of the desired colour (be sure you have them the right way round since they need matching polarity)
solder them in and then put it back into the case
reinstall it into your car and you're good to go.

Throttle by wire cars typically have reset procedures you can do without taking out the battery. In the SLK you hold the kickdown button and turn it to accessory while it recalibrates.

All I know is what i've experienced personally.

The mercedes online community has always pointed me in the right direction to fix any problem myself. the OBD2 tells you any problems it has and you sort them out like any other car.

Last week I had to re-solder wiring in my hardtop because a pinch point had snapped 2 cables leading to a sensor. 1 hour with a soldering iron and a multimeter and i saved myself the $1000 they quoted me at mercedes.

man, don't fucking get me started on cunts that install towbars
my old man took his fairlane to some 4x4 shop to get a big fuck off bar fitted. came back with the bumper out if place, they couldnt do anything about it. connector got about 2 uses before the screws fell out, I ended up using zipties. gets brought in for retorquing, can't see anything different.
a month later it gets totaled and i'm pulling the bar off, some of the fucking bolts were handtight, none needed a breaker bar or much strength
no trust for 4x4 cunts

so boys, thinking about getting my first bike this summer ( >>13988995 was me) for fun and hooning purposes, any recommendations? probably looking at either a postie bike since i don't have much to spend or some other road legal dirtbike

also I'll probably never be in traffic in cities and probably always offroad on this bike so should i even bother getting gear apart from a helmet?
cheers cunts
>>
>>13989304
and jacket and pants
>>
>>13989304
Yeah, get a dirtbike. And look for some second hand armour (possibly from the same seller you buy said dirtbike from).
Something like a DR-Z250 or a KL-Sex 250 would be adequate if you're otherwise looking at postie bikes. Although, if you don't mind turning spanners a little more often, a 250F enduro like a Yamaha WR-F or Honda CRF-X are about as much fun as you can have on two wheels, short of a 450F.
>>
>>13989316
Road gear=/=Bush gear. While jacket and pants help against abrasions on the road, these hazards aren't so much of an issue offroad. Protection against impacts offroad is more relevant, such as armour and boots.
>>
>>13989325
if its a road legal dirtbike, or a ct110, he is going to be spending atleast sometime on the road.
and i can assure you when hit by a large object like a car road gear does an excellent job

Don't skimp out on gear, you'll never know when you'll need the extra protection.

My boots in particular have saved me from crushed/twisted ankles a fair few times now, and they're not even expensive Sidis or anything.

Also Braaap Street Superlight with the 190cc Daytona engine and dirt wheels.

Yes. A lot of offroad only MX bikes can be "offroad licenced", but that almost always ends up costing as much as RTA road registration.
The majority don't bother, but I don't see the point if you otherwise have an R or RE class licence.

>>13989304
Don't get a CT110 as your first bike. Yes they're good for running errands, but the skills from a CT don't really translate well to other bikes. It's not a good learning platform.

>also I'll probably never be in traffic in cities and probably always offroad on this bike so should i even bother getting gear apart from a helmet?
All gear or don't ride. Just make sure you're buying the appropriate gear for what you're doing.

>>13989373
Keep in mind a lot of those engine swaps aren't legal in most states.

>>13989465
If it's running well that sounds like a pretty decent deal honestly. I'm planning to buy my brother a corolla to learn manual in. It'll be more fun for him in a car we can pretend is fast.
>>
>>13989467

it runs but apparently the bushings are fucked and I don't even really know what that means
>>
>>13989482
Yeah but, you're talking FPV prices for a fucking XR8.
Blow the engine up with a shit batch of fuel and put the supercharger on another car and you're left with something worth $10k max.

Buy a GT/GT-P and do intake+exhaust+cams+tune. End up with something that sounds insane, goes hard and will actually hold SOME value, as much as a V8 falcon will be worth nothing in 15 years anyway.
>>
okay so I'm thinking i'll either get a klx250 or drz250, which years are best and whats an acceptable amount of km's? also any good stealerships in adelaide or is scumtree my best bet?
>>
>>13989505
gt/gtp are for the most part overpriced already, and they are only going to get worse.
>>13989505
i've done exhaust and intake, and sound is nice, to annoy the neighbours at all hours. But cams are expensive as fuck on these cars
>>
>>13989503
For $500 though... I think the Golf would probably be more forgiving. Really though, at that price point buy whichever you want. If you can't be fucked doing the bushings but the Golf and pocket $250 for a shitty stereo for it.

The only time I'd really recommend a big car for learning is reverse parallel parking. I was taught to do it in a limousine. Can reverse parallel park anything in seconds now.

>>13989524
Pay the extra and go a DRZ400.
>>
>>13989525
>gt/gtp are for the most part overpriced already, and they are only going to get worse.
No shit genius, all the more reason he has a point.
>>13989505
I'd just chuck on a full exhaust, intake and tune and call it a day. The 290 FPV engines already had more aggressive camshaft profile over the Ford badged 260 Boss, and a cam upgrade for a DOHC V8 ends up being a near on $4000 job.
>>
>>13989535
but to be worth money it has to be ORIGINAL, so slapping shit on it makes it less collectible unless selling to cashed up bogan teen dickheads.
they love Mawds
>>
>>13989525
Yeah but you need them for dat lump

You get what i'm saying though, right?
That dickhead has added the cost of the supercharger onto the car, thinking mods add value when they just don't.

You can buy an FPV GT with less kms for less money, no XR8 is worth that unless we're talking a hell of a lot more than 520rwhp.

Shit for that money you can almost buy an FG F6, drop $5k into that for when you want to go fast and put straight pipes on the ute for 3am skidz
>>
>>13989548
>but to be worth money it has to be ORIGINAL
Such as reversible modifications? Or just keep it as an original investment?
What ever, it's your coin, you can waste it as you see fit.
>>
>>13989548
You can reverse intake/zaust/cams, just keep the original shit.
Wax it every couple of months and keep it under cover and in 5 years when you're bored, the GT will be worth more than twice what the XR is.
>>
>>13989556
i've the hard yards on cars, and im tired of that shit now.

>>
>>13989580
DRZ400 are usually only about $1000 more. Remember this is the most expensive time of year to buy as well. If you can sit on it until next year you'll be able to save money.
>>
>>13989573
Yeah
But dat lump tho

If you have the money, why not just turbo the ute?
$5-7k and you're looking at 400rwkw for skids with no need to worry about messing with its value or anything.

Just whatever you do man, don't spend $27k on a car that should be for sale for under 20. It's just not worth it no matter how expensive the supercharger is, hell wait for a leb to buy it and wrap it around a pole and then buy the wreck at auction for $5k, drop the engine in a GT.
>>
>>13989573
>>13989586
Forgive my ignorance, but why would you buy it over something like a VY SS and turbo/supercharge that?

I imagine it'd end up costing maybe a little over half and be giving you the same sort of power. I personally always liked LS1s more too.
>>
>>13989584
>>13989580

the only i would never buy. . . . .commodore.
its not the cars fault, its the stigma. i will NOT be that guy doing skids in a commo. i like the engine/driveline but waaaaay too many dickheads

>>13989586
hmmm i looked at twin turbo systems, i was aroused initially, but holly balls the cost. and the ute is my most reliable form of transport, a few things have gone wrong, but they were actually really easy to fix, another reason i love it.
the only thing i have properly broken was the clutch got cooked at the drags, and the tail shaft ruined it CV in to the diff cose of multiple reasons.

long post sorry, been drinkin
>>
>>13989598
Because pre-VE commodore chassis were shithouse, even worse than BA/BF and also because the 5.4s sound so goddamn sexy

Plus they have a higher minimum value. Even a heap of shit BA XR8 is still worth more than $5k just due to the engine alone, meanwhile you can buy an LS1 for <$1k so the shittiest of SS are starting to approach weed swap value
>>
>>13989612
The stigma is for both of them. The Commonwhore term has been replaced by Falcodore here. They're considered the same level of boganmobile now.
>>
>>13989618
>Even a heap of shit BA XR8 is still worth more than $5k just due to the engine alone, meanwhile you can buy an LS1 for <$1k so the shittiest of SS are starting to approach weed swap value.
That's sort of my point though. Surely the shear amount you'd save could be used to make up for the chassis problems. The engine itself is great.
>>
>>13989612
Not talking twin turbo broseph, all those sorts of kits are expensive as fuck.

What you do is get custom manifolds made up and get a nice big single turbo, even with delicious 10/10 welds it's still a hell of a lot cheaper than an off the shelf twin kit. I reckon you could do it for $5-7k without a drama.

And yes, i know all about the falcon shaft/diff situation. I'm fixing my XR6T sometime after christmas for the same shit.
>>
>>13989628
was considering swapping in my ef diff with minispool last year.
do you know how shit falcon ute shafts are tho?
not aligned properly from factory
>>
>>13989622
Not really bro, the chassis is floppy and the rear suspension design was done by somebody who should really not be given anything sharp.
They're just not good cars, at all. Just because the LS+T-56 combo is excellent doesn't mean you want it wrapped in wet tissue paper.

Ideally if you want to spend $10k on a fun V8, you'd find an FC RX7 with a fucked engine for $5k and throw the LS in that. Failing that, the falcon is definitely the way to go.

I'm of the opinion that the LS is a better engine than the 5.4 in all ways except the entire reason to buy a V8, that delicious sound.
>>
>>13989634
Nope, my shit went sedan rather than ute so my concern is just general shit quality bearings and unis.

Wish it sold before i needed to do the diff, there's no way it'll be worth any more money after i drop close to $1k on it
