Hell no. Even if the mileage on them is low those things are probably fucked.

Why would you cheap on on the only things that keep your car connected to the road?

There is still tread left.

I look at it like they are racing slicks now and when warm provide MORE grip now then.

Suzuki Samurai converted to a 4.3L V6 Vortec.

The Sammy will probably cost about $5,000.

how come when the coolant temperature needle reaches the middle mark, it never moves? is the cooling so efficient that it can keep the temperature that regulated or?
>>
>>13799707
It depends on the car. Usually if it's staying the same the thermostats kicked on and allows the coolant to flow through. Unless if the cooling systems fucked or if it's really shitty compared to what you need.
>>
>>13799707

There is a mechanical termostat that meters the amount of coolant that gets to the radiator.
>>
>>13799759
even when im on a roadtrip and im ascending a big hill or mountain the needle stays dead center. this has been on the past 3 cars ive owned too
>>
>>13799822
Once again it depends on the car. Have they all been new-ish vehicles? If you're sure it always stays the same maybe it's an issue with the gauges and/or the wiring.
>>
>>13799915
though if you're saying it's been the same for all 3 past vehicles you shouldn't worry about it. Cooling systems nowadays are extremely efficient stock.
>>
How much tire is too much tire? Assume you can go as wide as possible, how wide do you go? What about overall diameter?
>>
>>13799938
Depends on how much power you got really. Although if you've got a muscle car typically you want to give it a decent stance. I for example have a hard on for early 70's American muscle with giant rear tires and skinny front tires. Only worry about wider tires if you have either what I mentioned earlier or if your car seriously lacks grip and you drive it hard often.
>>
>>13799822
most modern stock temp gauges don't directly correlate to coolant temps.
>>
>>13799456
Still looking for an answer if anyone can help out. I even looked at the shop manual for my car and it's simply not as detailed as I need it to be. I'm hoping I can accomplish this without pulling the whole column apart.
>>
>>13799938
50 is a good track tire sidewall height
width is as big as you can fit IF you need more grip.
for diameter of wheel, ideally just big enough to fit around your brakes, but people usually go bigger just because it tends to look better and they usually have better availability depending on the size. like.. 13's on my car would be ideal, but because my brakes are too big for 13's and because 14's are hard to find I run 15's. I'd run wider tires if I could, but they won't fit and they dont fit the budgie anyway.

So I'm looking at the MR2 AW11. I keep coming back to it, maybe it's the look, or the size, or the interior, but I inevitably come back to considering it when I'm looking at a new car. I want something RWD, light, sporty, 80's angled in design and the MR2 has all of those things.

Sure, it's small, and there's very little room inside the car, the boot is tiny, and it wouldn't be a car for drifto with an MR layout and other things. What I want to know is what MR2 owners think of their car.

Why do you like the MR2? What's your favorite thing about driving it? Would you ever consider a different car over the MR2? Really, I'm indecisive and just want some opinions by owners.

I'm learning to drive, and I'm doing very good so far.
But they don't explain a lot about how the engine works, so far it's just "press pedal, magic happens".

So I want to know, in layman's terms, why does the car move even when I'm not pressing the throttle pedal? I shift into the first gear and slowly release the clutch, and the car is moving. The way I understand it, an active engine is producing a sort of 'minimal' RPM, and accelerating only increases from that number. Is this, in essence, correct?
>>
>>13801182
trust me anon it's more fun believing in the magic
>>
>>13801182
If the engine is on, the cylinders are firing, if the cylinders are firing, the crankshaft is moving.
If the crankshaft is moving and the car is in neutral (gears disengaged) then the car is not moving.
If the car is in gear, then the car is moving, albeit slowly. Pressing the gas increases RPM, which makes the crankshaft spin faster, and car move more.

Automatics are close to the same thing except the way a torque converter works means you can be "in gear" and stop the car from moving by just applying the brakes.
>>
>>13801189
>>13801191
Got it, thanks.
>>
>>13801182
Its called idling. Your fuel spitters are farting a tiny amount of go go juice into the movement tubes which keeps the power swiffers moving even while you are stopped. This means you dont have to turn the key every time you stop and go. However, the gizmo shaft is always turning a bit meaning if you dump the clutch it will cause enough slow down force to stall the engine from a standstill.
>>
>>13801204
Does that work with all engines, or just, say, diesel ones? I'm learning on a diesel car.
>>

>>
>>13801136
I think any driver's first reaction to locking wheels should be to release the brake (unless a collision is unavoidable or you're going in a straight line).

My car actually has anti-lock brakes, but they had been faulty back then when the following happened:
>approached a corner at 20-ish mph (about 30 km/h)
>the turn went slightly downhill and was tighter than I expected (apparently the ground was wet as well)
>applied the brakes (business as usual)
>suddenly my wheels lock and my car slides onto a traffic island
If I hadn't released the brake in time, I would have mowed down a traffic sign as well.
Luckily when I checked the car with the mechanic shortly after I found out that I only had indented my rim which I could easily replace with my spare tire.

So yeah... I think lifting off is the first natural reaction to any self-aware driver. It's never bad to know how your car reacts in extreme situations though.
>>
>>13801219
The principle is more or less the same. They're both combustion engines after all.

Going through all the differences between diesel and petrol engines is a bit tedious though.
Just bear in mind that diesel engines don't have sparkplugs. I'll spare you the technical details, but it has to do with the fact that diesel is less flammable than petrol and the achieved compression within the cylindre.
In very simple terms: Petrol needs to be told by the sparkplug when to combust, and diesel just combusts when a certain compression is achieved.

So. I've watched a few manual vidyas/read a few manual guides.

Just tell me if the following conclusions are wrong:

Your foot has to always be on the clutch just at varying amounts.
The handbrake is very useful for hills and stuff.
Stalling at least once is a part of learning, and can easily be fixed by restarting the vehicle as long as you don't PANIC.
>>
what is a live axle? I don't get the explanations on google
>>
>>13802490
No that's wrong.
Yes handbrakes can be used by newbies uphill to make it easier to get the car moving. Stalling is a given for beginners, if you stall it's usually letting go of the clutch too fast.

Anyone know if you can swap the trim for the PP S550 Mustang GT into a non-PP?
I want the 2 gauges instead of that 3rd center air pod.
Looked at some parts stores online and all i can find are the gauges themselves, not the trim/pods.

Pic related with gauges

Also found a forum post describing what I'm looking for with no response:

>So I have a non PP 2015 GT and soon I'll be upgrading to a supercharger, either whipple or the Roush. Anyways, it does not have the center gauges, which I'd like to see the boost and oil pressure per the CJ pony gauge cluster they offer.

Without gauges.

And here's a video of the GT gauges being swapped with Ecoboost gauges (for the boost gauge) that shows that panel being pulled off.

Seems like it should be a pretty straightforward swap by just buying the different trim, but I can't find it for sale and I'm unsure if that middle air pod needs to be sealed off or re-routed and what the wiring situation would be like.

>>13802515
The short of it is a beam axle (what you're probably referring to as a live axle*) has both has both wheels connected together, so if one wheel goes up (on a speed bump for instance) the opposite wheel goes down. This is otherwise known as a dependent suspension.

As opposed to an independent suspension (e.g. IRS) which lets each wheel move freely, so if one goes in a hole, the opposite wheel is unaffected.

*live axles and dead axles are both types of beam axles. Both are connected and a form of dependent suspension but dead axles are a single piece and don't transfer any power to the wheels (hence, dead) while live axles aren't a single piece and transfer power to the wheels (hence live).

SEATs aren't a thing here. We get VWs because there's no point in VW trying to introduce another of their brands in the US and also SEAT produces like 300k vehicles per year.

While we're on topic, I brake most of the time by inmediate clutch and slowly braking, then if I need to get going before I come to a stop I revmatch the gear I want and carry on, I've been critizised for not braking with a gear engaged, how does one break?

If reliability and mpg's aren't the only thing your concerned about, there is no reason to buy anything over a mazda3. Fun to drive, cheap, economical (not civic economic, but it's 30 city 40 highway) and not cheaply built. Just avoid the manual 2010 models, they have clutch issues. They are also one of the most reliable small cars around.

I'm drafting an engine swap for a small vehicle and I'm looking at around 200 hp goal power in a compact and lightweight package. The obvious choice would of course be the K-series, but I like the sound of six cylinder engines also. Are there any spunky small V6s worth taking a look at, or are all of them boat anchors compared to straight fours?

Twice now my car has tried to die when i push the accelerator to about halfway. Im not flooring it, just slowly accelerating. I can feel and hear the engine sputtering as it tries to die. If i let off the gas a little and slowly press again, it seems to fix itself. Im not sure, but i was thinking a possible compression issue? Also, it feels like it doesnt accelerate right sometimes when going from stopped or almost stopped. Ill almost floor the pedal and i barely feel any change, i cant even tell in going faster if i dont check my gagues. After a few seconds this stops and it seems to accelerate better. Is this related to my other issue, or am i just hitting the gear's max rpm and having to wait for it to shift up?

why doesn't my mate's car start

i put the key in, turn it but it doesn't start. no chuh-chuh-chuh noise either. just a gentle quiet low hum.

we then tried to roll it out of the drive but couldn't get it over a little ramp. went back in the car and put the key in again, turned and it worked like normal

but now it's fucked again
>>
>>13803447
I'm pretty sure it's the starter. I'm assuming by turning the key the motor of the starter is turning the gear but it's not engaging with the flywheel.

Also does the car sometimes make a grinding sound when you try to start it? This is a sign of a failing starter too.
>>
>>13803491

nope, no grinding sound. just that low hum which would be pretty hard to hear anywhere that isn't quiet

someone else also mentioned it could be a problem with the starter motor or the solenoid

I recently purchased a car and gave 5,000 to the dealership and told them I would get the rest of the money the following week (5,000).

Why doesn't Ford do HUDs like Chevy does? Mustang would be sick with a HUD.
>tfw can't have Camaro interior with Mustang exterior

Are there any good aftermarket HUDs that don't look like shit? I'm guessing the windshield needs a special coating or something in the HUD area for it to project which is why all the aftermarket HUDs I've seen have some glass that comes up and looks dumb.

Is there a dash cam that can simultaneously record inside and outside the vehicle? Or is my best bet to mount it behind the front seats or use one with a swivel when I want to record something other than out the front?

If I have multiple things that use the ODBII port, would getting like a y-splitter work, or would the devices conflict with each other?

If I have 3 things using the 12v outlet (lets say radar detector, dash cam, and a tablet) with one of those 3 way splitters, would I be at any risk of overloading the outlet? Guessing the only option then would be to hard wire some stuff.

From what I know, torque steer is caused by the length difference in halfshafts in FWD cars. Saab for example used longitudinal FWD, with equal length halfshafts, and they don't have that issue.

Now, would unequal length halfshafts, in, say a solid rear end like a Ford 9'', result in rear torque steer?
>>
>>13809005
the biggest issue is that the front wheels are what steer, so you're introducing all that power to wheel's that are moving in more than one direction.
Power to the rear wheels could jerk it one way or another depending on how the torque is delivered, but it's not going to be such an issue as putting it to wheels that aren't fixed in a straight line.
>>
>>13809067
What about rear steer cars?

Your solution is good, spray that inside the "rails" too and move the window up and down a lot while you do it so it has a chance to spread.
No damage can occur, you are not going to affect any vital organs of the window mechanism (which could only benefit from additional lubrication anyway).

If it doesn't work, then you might want to change the rubber seal, which might have warped with time and gets in the way of the rising window.

Craftsman or Stanley for socket sets?
>>
So I scratched the side of my car up against a concrete pillar while backing out of a parking spot. No serious damage, although the painjob is torn off in multiple places, and bare metal is exposed to the air. The side blinklight was also a casualty, and it got a bump in the metal.

Now my question is, would it be okay to just spray som dinitrol/tectyl over it? That brown sluggish mess that is usually used on the underside of the vehicle to protect it. Of course the end result will be ugly as fuck, but it's a 1000 buck Audi A4 stationwagon from 97', so I'm not exactly picky about the looks.

Looks absolutely dreadful. So I figured some dinitrol might actually make it prettier. It'll work, right?

2.2 diesel 150 bhp OR the 2.7 diesel 170 bhp ? The 2.7 diesel is gonna be taxed as hell, so I'm asking if an extra 2-3k euros are worth the 20 bhp. I don't really care for performance, I'm a pretty slow, and civilised driver. Grandma driver if you will

How come there's no revolution meter (no, not a tachometer) as a more accurate way of denoting use?
Sure you can get an idea of use when you see a car has 100k miles, but 100k miles averaging 5k RPM is a much different level of use than 100k miles averaging 3k RPM. Also, miles don't account for time spent idling (especially useful when you're looking at usage o a car like a cop car that spends a ton of time running but not moving).
I'm not saying get rid of a mileage counter, but adding in a counter to see the total number of revolutions a car's engine has done would be very useful I think. Not like it'd be some major development with how computerized cars are now.

I've been listening to John Eagle commercials on the radio for years and I still can't fucking figure out what accent that guy has.

Are the custom replacement for carpets a good idea? I want to rebuild my interior, are the ones from auto parts warehouse worth the 200$ for the custom kit made for your car?

Also what does /o/ think of g2 paint for calipors? Do you guys reccomend any other brands for calipor painting?

Also how does anyone feel about the michelen pilot super sport tires? They're expensive 260$ per tire? Is it worth the price?

Also I have to check out my gfs car today(C-rV) and the speedometer doesn't work, I went through the fuses with a multimeter and replaced a few but still hasn't worked any ideas?

If a car makes a heavy sort of 'thunk' sound after shifting (auto) is it unlikely to last much longer?

It still shifts 'smoothly', at least, but...well.

The kid who owned my 1987 Trans Am before me gutted the airbox and MAF assembly. Should I replace all that with a CAI? Right now there is no filter, and the airbox is damaged and won't stay shut or seal to the MAF properly. I was only able to find one on ebay but it was $200 and I'm thinking maybe something more modern could be better.

use your handbrake when starting on hills. lightly, just enough to keep it from rolling backwards. try practicing that.

Because you would get retarded numbers that range in the tens/hundreds of millions, which have absolutely no use to you while driving and give you a false sense of knowledge about the health state of the car.
Using that sort of number to make an average is pointless, because you still don't know if and how long the car has been revved like crazy.

Once you get a rev counter you will start questioning why there is not a way to measure how many revs have been done while the engine was cold or why the rev count is not differentiated between acceleration and coasting.

It's just pointless. It doesn't give you any useful info while driving, it can't be used for scheduling maintenance, it goes to crazy high values and it will just sit there, racking up the count, just for the sake of being remotely useful if the car is ever sold to someone else.

Counting hours would be more useful, but it will still be imprecise for a vehicle like a car that sees all kinds of different driving styles and situations.

Mileage is still probably the best way to monitor the age of a car and can have some sort of use while driving instead of just occupying dash space.

Yeah i had to use it the third time , the first two tries i was trying without it because my friends told me using the HandBrake is for retards who dont know how to drive lel

I recently purchased pic related to replace the CDC40 Opera in my 57 plate Vauxhall Vectra with an aftermarket stereo to have access to my subwoofer and aux input (which I'd previously used in a Corsa) but have found that the connector adapters simply don't fit even though this was advertised as 2002-2008 Vectra's.. Anyone know why I'm such a retard or know where I can get the right adapter? Preferably in Anthracite for the fascia too; thanks

Cheapo car for 2k to 2.5k or lower that isn't Japanese and isn't a complete money pit.

I was thinking something like a Ford Explorer or some such.

Your biggest issue with an out of state car is always going to be the smog check. I don't know if it applies to used car but it has to be 50 state approved as well

It's all about feeling bruh.

And also, that camera angle is taken from the roof line to show more of the lower located things rather than to show how visibility would be.

Any tips at all on what people consider the basics you need to know to drive well and take care of a car.

My car's front tires have really low tread, I'm definitely buying new ones soon but out of safety would it be best to avoid driving long distances?

By long distance I mean something like a 50-minute drive on the highway.

Your main concernis low traction conditions and dry rotting. If you see cracks on your sidewall/threads avoid long drives. If it's raining/snowing or less than 32 degrees, avoid long drives. Otherwise you should be okay.
