It still needs to be aligned for me, and definitely a less cancerous saddle. I don't mind single, it's used for short flatland commutes.
I'm getting vinyls printed for it, they'll probably say something dumb like "memes".

Do yourself a favor. Those metal brackets that are holding up your fender at the back, the ones that are sticking out at the top? Cover those with something. They will cut you good. They need to be cut on your front wheel.

Whoever put those fenders on is an idiot.

They're really nice frames! I could not be happier with this bike. It's hard to beat the bang-for-the-buck if you want a modern, simple frame.

The chain tug is because I had a bad experience with forward-facing dropouts once and am forever paranoid. I am an engineer, I solve problems, and this is now a solved problem. We have the technology.

I'm not planning to throw so much money at it, just hunt down some year appropiate components. I've seen some really cheap full shimano 600. But you are right about the fork, a carbon 1 inch fork is going to be a pain to find, meanwhile i'm gonna throw a Cr-Mo one i have.
>>
>>949331

Trust me. By the time you add up fork, headset, stem, bars, levers, brakes, seatpost, saddle, bottom bracket, crankset, front mech, rear mech, chain, cables & housing, wheels, tubes, tires, etc you'll be looking at at least $500 in random stuff.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Projects are fun. Just don't expect to turn a profit or break even when you sell it.

>>
>>949956
Obviously low end but it's not walmart tier, so good job getting it for $35.
>>
>>949954

This is exactly the opposite of true.

In particular the so-called bottom brackets are notoriously unreliable and quick to fail.

I believe they are also not replaceable with standard components, and manufacturer replacements are not available either afaik.
>>
>>949956

Unless you are 6' 3" or taller it is probably too big for you.

Fair price for the bike, but it needs some thorough TLC to be rideable.
>>
>>949959
I commuted on a shitty walmart hybrid for 3 years and the most I ever had to do was true the wheels. I gave it to my grandpa eventually and he still rides in almost daily with no issues.
>>
>>949962

Commuted what distance, and how long did it take?
>>
>>949954

Garbage tier bikes are never a good starting point. One ride on even a good used bike makes this clear to anyone.
>>
>>949963

>>
>>949966

9/10 would ride. Make sure to inspect the tires thoroughly before doing any long rides, old bikes sometimes have worn out tires liable to blowout at any time.

>I 've got a slick new pair of 26x1.0s waiting for me at my bike shop and then after that I need to snag a rigid fork
It's clearly past time for you to get a road bike, or at least a road frame to build up as a commuter. That saddle to bar height difference is impressive though.
>>
>>950303
I'm actually in the process of building a road bike, so I've got that covered. This one is fun though, it's essentially my "test" bike for trying out fits and parts and stuff
>>
>>950300

Why the shit do you have it fit like a pursuit frame? It's a fucking COMMUTER. You're supposed to have an upright position so you can keep a close eye on what other retarded people are doing.

bike size chart mtn.png
33 KB, 638x211
>>950325
if you can ride it with the seat post extended that high, that indicates that it's too small. but you do you, buddy. you've clearly made up your mind.
>>
>>950325

None of it is the angle of the picture.

Your saddle height is ballsnose ridiculous and if that is even remotely comfortable you either have the shortest torso in recorded history or the frame is entirely the wrong size for you.
>>
>>950328
According to that chart it's the right size for me though, huh, weird. I know it looks too small but it works for me. I've adapted to it anyways. I prefer smaller frames anyways since I ride pretty aggressively either way
>>
>>950332
that's not a 23"

look at the bikes here that have the old-style horizontal top tubes like yours. https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=23%20inch%20MTB%20mountain%20bike&tbs=imgo:1#imgrc=_
now look at the head tubes on those bikes. now look at yours.

either it was mislabeled, or you're remembering it wrong, but that bike is not a 23".
>>
>>950333
Yo the headtube on my bike is massive though. Giant liked to build those thick ass aluminum tubes round this time so that downtube is at least 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter
>>
>>950341
whatever dude.

see:
>>950329
>>
>>950345
Could it not be that the saddle height seems so extreme because the handlebars are set so low? And that it wouldn't seem so major if the bars were raised up to where you would normally see MTB bars?
>>
>>949760
The Diverge looks great, but how much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking? $1499 seems pretty steep for an aluminum bike only equipped with Tiagra.

Wanted to take some nice photos of my bike, but I'll do it once I removed all decals. This is of today, mine is on the right.

I know, it's a cheap bike, but it's really fun to blast around with it. Only thing I'd really change are the wheels, but those will stay until I destroy them... so I guess they push me to ride harder as I don't care if I bend them.

Black Mountain Cycles's cross frame. He does a run of them out of Taiwan about once a year. This is from the latest batch; pink is basically all sold out but he has some British Racing Green ones left. Goddamn nice frame for under $600.

>>949869
Satori Boondocks is the OEM. Easiest to get in the USA through Velo Orange as the "Dajia Far". Origin 8 just started selling it as the "Gary Ergo Sweep".

It's pretty damn good offroad. High sweep and flair, low reach and drop. Lots of leverage in the drops, super stable on descents in the hooks, and the hooks are open enough that they don't pinch/pressure the way some dirt drops do. Hoods are a usable position, even though they're at a pretty extreme sideways angle.

Dislikes:
* The clamp is just barely wide enough for the stem clamp, and the tops are narrow, so if you want to tape the tops to use them as a grip area, there's basically no where to clamp a light or other accessory to the bar.
* The drops are still angled down a little more than I'd like. If I angled the bar more to flatten them out, I think the hoods would become unusable. I keep hoping the Luxy makes a comeback.

Hell yes!
>>
>>949935
Agreed, but that doesn't give you the versatility of maybe choosing single-speed without some sort of other chain tensioner.

I'd build it with vertical dropouts if I was spec'ing a custom frame, but this frame is built as a versatile platform that's able to be built in many different ways... and forward facing dropouts are really flexible.

It doesn't look like that lever is very easy to pull. A bar end lever would maybe be better but with such short bar ends it's going to be difficult getting proper leverage.

>What's your issue with the brake lever? Just curious. I like hearing people's thoughts about my bike set-up

It's dangerous. Those levers are meant to be pulled in the opposite direction, not with you pinky and ring finger

I'm not happy with your handlebar tape either, for the record. Loose tape can slip, then you fall under a car

Your cheapest solution would be 22.2 diameter bullhorn bars.

22.2 is the clamp diameter for mtb brake levers. Most bullhorn bars are meant for road brake levers, which have a clamp diameter of 23.8mm, so you have to hunt for MTB size ones

Here is the first result in google. $26

https://www.purefixcycles.com/products/bull-horn-bars?variant=352153369

Alternatively, you could go for a completely different stem + bar combination. But this would be the #1 priority if I was upgrading you bike

I do like your bike though. You must be young / in shape / little crazy
>>
>>950614

(cont.)

looking at it again you probably do use the right fingers, but having the levers like that will make your grip on the bars too weak.

A proper bullhorn bar with the levers mounted the correct direction would give you a safer handle on your bike
>>
>>950549
What makes specialized aluminum more expensive than a similarly priced cannondale, felt, etc... with 105? Is it just the name? I'm genuinely curious, not trying to put the bike down.

>>
>>950624
I've played with the idea of getting bullhorns but I have yet to find anything that is similar to the size on mine already. Since I flipped an mtb riser stem and trimmed it down, my bars are only about 12 inches wide. And as far as the bar tape goes, it's just some used bar tape I had from another bike and I wanted to see if I /could/ wrap these, since there's so little real estate up front

>>950618
Yeah I've hunted around a little bit but I haven't found anything that seems like it would work better than how I have it. Maybe interrupter levers but I'm not entirely sure those woulld be much different. I haven't had any real issues with the brake capabilities

No paint on the rear stays has nothing to do with the frame being Reynolds or Columbus tubing. It has everything to do with the builder and what they offered. For the very most part, polished stays and a polished front fork were options at an additional expense and tended to only be offered for higher end bikes.

Your bike is pretty sweet though. A bit on the small side, but I would ride it. I appreciate your attention to detail.

thanks m8, Im 5"10 so its only slighly big for me (its 56cm, this is my bike >>950724, but Im kind of new to road bikes so the feel is kind of weird for now, 54 would be perfect).

the only thing I want to adjust now is the hood palcement - I want to put them lower on the bar and raise the bar angle a bit in order to keep it leveled with the TT like on modern road bikes like pic rel so Ill be slightly higher on the hoods and angled on the drops...is it a good idea?
>>
>>950998
Without swapping parts, you should rotate the bars up or move the hoods toi much. A little rotation is fine, but you won't have your "classic/traditional bend" handlebars and brake levers looking like a "compact drop" handlebar. The difference is classic bars have the tops as the highest point, then bend and drop a bit to the hoods, and then finish the bend further down into a flat section in the drops (the flat section of the drops is usually close to level, if not perfectly level). The hoods on these bars form a "ramp" shape on traditional bars, like a ski slope that starts at the tops.
Modern, compact handlebars are designed to have the tops and the hoods at the same height, with the tops and the "ramp" of the hoods forming a straight line. There is a sharp bend right under the hood clamp that mellows out into a gentle curve for the length of the drops area that doesn't straigten out like traditional bars would.
Older style brake hoods usually feel best when used on tradional shape bars, and modern integrated brake/shifters are shaped to be used on compact handlebars. However, there are some modern brake-only levers that are designed for comoact handlebars, and there are still modern "traditional" bend bars (see Peter Sagan's handlebars)

thanks! I havent noticed the drop Sagan has on the hoods, quite interesting but its still slightly higher than the position of the hoods on a pure traditional bar.

so rotating slightly the bar upwards and droping the hoods few centimiters from this >>950724 (but nothing extreme) will be possible to get the, slightly more comfortable on the hoods sagan position or is the ba change needed for that? I come from mtb so this kind of reach is quite uncomfortable for now.
>>
>>951007
You can move the hoods higher as long as you can still reach the levers with 1 finger from your drop position. You can angle the bars up as long as your drop position remains comfortable. Generally pointing the bar ends at the rear brake is as far as you'd go. Your post is a little confusing. Do you want a more or less aggressive position? The saddle to bar drop is already quite minimal. If you move the hoods down the bar you will not be able to easily grip the very bottom of the lever from the drops, with your index or index and ring finger which provides best leverage for braking. If you want flat ramps - high hoods- get some nitto noodles, they are very very comfortable, strong and worth it.

>>951012
oh shit there's another post. You're not making sense. Is the position too aggresive? You want to rotate the bars upward (make less drop) and move the hoods down (more drop) for a sum total 0 effect?
>>
>>951015
>nitto noodles

sorry for the confusion, I want a less agressive position without dropping the stem, something like that noodle bar
>>
>>951012
I may have been a bit confusing. To shorten the reach, it will actually be rotating the bars down some and moving the hoods up a little. The hoods move a little closer to you, but get a little lower.
What I said before will bring the hoods slightly higher from the ground, but not really make the reach short.
In the end, the only REAL limitations are how effectively you can still squeeze the brakes when you rotate them, so I recommend you carefully unwrap the bars (so you can reuse the tape) and make any adjustments and ride it a little bit to test the position out before you finalize it by rewrapping the bars. As you turn the bar up or down, the brake levers also start to point up or down, which force your wrists to an awkward angle when braking from the hoods, or may even make it difficult to reach the levers from the drops. That is why you can shift the hoods a bit opposite to how you rotate the bars to mitigate these symptoms.

The changes to the reach and hood height using older style bars and hoods is quite limited compared to the same method on new bars. Most of the reach on old handlebars is in the length of the handlebar itself, and the hoods are very short, so there is no way to really shrink the handlebar reach unless you actually point them down and move the hoods closer to the tops.
Modern compact handlebars--and even Sagan's modern "traditional" bend bars--have relatively short reach compared to your true classic bars even though they are similarly shaped. That is because modern hoods are longer and flatter, so the tops and reach of modern bars got shorter. These modern proportions (along with the angle modern hoods clamp to the bar at) make shortening the reach easier.

In the end (again), there are simply limitations to how much you can adjust reach or drop on any setup without swapping to different size components

Got a WTB Wolverine in the rear now, the Rock Razor that came with the bike wasn't suitable for the wet and mossy forests I ride in. The sad reality is that it probably costs them like 50€ and since they can rip people off whenever they want, they just go the easy route and sell only complete parts.

So keep broken mechs as you will eventually find yourself with a perfectly good spare part that will save you from spending 200€ again.

Couple changes since last post. New tyres fitted today (went from 25mm to 28mm), flipped stem, replaced front rotor as the shitty unbranded one was noisy as fuck, and finally got a computer (Giant Axact AW9).

Whilst changing my tyres I decided to weigh my wheels as I was looking at getting a lighter set and these ones are supposedly heavy, turns out I wouldn't even be saving 100g for £150. Either these aren't stock (rims don't match and rear has silver nipples) or the reviewer was expecting way too much from a cheaper bike.
>>
>>951081
How the fuck would mechs warp the rotors?

If he didn't overpay for that ti frame he'd have plenty of money for hydros.
>>
>>951119

Basically because I think in BB7 only one pad moves and bends the rotor slightly to touch the other pad. I have not heard any reports that this would be a problem.

I considered hydraulics but in the end decided against them because I know how to service cable actuated brakes, but not hydraulically actuated. Also now I can transfer the brifters to a standard road bike if I ever want to.
>>
>>951125
Single piston calipers aren't a problem if that's what he was getting at, they're not as good as dual piston ones for a few reasons but they aren't going to do any damage.

all pistons will eventually slightly bend the rotor but it's not a huge deal, there should be enough clearance to allow for that. Worst that might be is that if you're one for completely silent bikes, that might create some slight "shhh... shhh" brake noise. At least that's my case with very cheap mechanical disc brakes, the only issue I have is that from time to time I need to adjust the brakes, but that shouldn't be such an issue with BB7's. They're actually in my mind as an eventual brakes upgrade...

But even then, pic related is my bike right now (couldn't clean it after last ride as it started raining) and it's still silent enough that when I was coming back from the ride people wouldn't hear me coming up.

>yes, it's quite disgusting
>no, it's not rust, just reddish dust
>yes I will clean it ASAP, just gotta wait for a sunny day, not going to ride it like this
>>
>>951127
>They're actually in my mind as an eventual brakes upgrade...
Unless you're running drop bars or some other unusual setup just get hydros, for flat bars the price difference is tiny for low end hydros (which will be better than even BB7s).
>>
>>951128
I'd get them for the extra adjustability over my current tektros, I don't feel the need to 1-finger brake (my current brakes stop the bike easily with two fingers.) and I like the adjustability on the field, I don't want to have to mess with hydraulics (I know it's not a huge deal, but I don't want to go to a bike shop if I can help it, and mechanical disk brakes are really easy to work on - I don't see the benefit of hydraulics except for better brake modulation.)
>>
>>951130
Trust me, the better modulation with hydros is absolutely worth it. It's not about having more power but being able to get the same braking force with less effort, with just one finger (which means an extra finger round the grips giving more control) you can vary the force precisely without tiring your hands out.

Also whilst they're a bit more work for the initial setup (if they don't come already filled and bled) they don't require as much maintenance and adjustments as cable brakes, they automatically adjust as the pad wears and when you put new pads in and alignment doesn't need to be quite as precise.

I've got BB5s at the moment (the white bike a few posts back) and they okay, but if I keep my flat bars I'm going to swap them out for some hydros like on all my mountain bikes.
>>
>>949660

>>
>>949573

>loose chain
>cables not crossing
>rust showing on the stem
>black seatpost
>ugly pedals

Fix those things and that would be a 5/5 cruiser.
>>
>>951133
Idk, I got a SRAM X5 shifter and that is really comfortable, I'm only using my thumb, so using two fingers to brake doesn't really put me at a discomfort in any way. I never accused any hand/wrist fatigue. I'll try out hydros on the trail at the first chance I get, but so far I'm not really seeing the benefits for a non-racer.

They'll be an upgrade really far down the line anyways, probably when the wheels or rotors are shot... I've been riding often only for like 3 months, improving steadily and right now what I really need is a set of good flat pedals.
>>
>>951137
It's not just you. I would say the front is 140mm and the rear 160mm. I'm not sure how mounting works with 140mm discs (as post mount and IS are 160mm natively), my best guess would be it uses shorter posts hence the rear being stuck with 160.
>>
>>951139
It might depend on the size of your hands, if you've got longer fingers your ring and pinky might have a bit more grip round the bar. Also I've got a fucked up pinky finger on my right hand (broke it in a crash) which doesn't help my grip strength when it's just two fingers holding on.

looks great to me. I'm about to do something like this with a jamis allegro 2.0 w/carbon fork

Fat tires are a must on flat bar roadish hybrids. I'm going 32mm

You might enjoy Ergon style grips if you get any wrist pain, also what I'm doing

my white ESIs turned grey in 1 ride.

If I don't get drop bars (looking less likely the more I ride this bike) I might get some bar ends and a slightly shorter stem, never been a fan of ergo grips.

I was after some 32s but the store only had 35s. These were cheap enough that I don't mind switching if I don't like them. I've only taken them on a 5 minute ride but they seem a fair bit comfier than the 25s.

My hands are a bit weird yeah, long and thin fingers, so they all sit tight on the bar and I can easily reach the levers without discomfort. Might be that, too. But as I've never tried hydros, it might also be that I am retarded and I've never experienced that sort of braking efficiency - all I can say is that so far my 160mm front and rear tektros have stopped me really well bot on and offroad, with no discomfort or times where I felt "I was close to crashing because of the brakes".
Also I weight just barely 60kg so there's very little mass to stop, that might help too.

I will post pics of my bloody self if I do end up on the rocks, though!

680- new bars are at least 800- some are 880 and mostly risers. Get your shit right if you wanna insult me for being trendy you bitch ass downtube.
>>
>>951128
I'm gonna thoroughly disagree. BB7s are way better than low-end hydro shit. I'm looking at entry level tektros and avids. Low-end shimanos perform decently, but unless you intend to go for some mid-tier or high-tier hydros, the BB7s are a perfectly fine option.

I ride xc with downhill bars, it's pretty comfy.

I can only speak from my experience with Shimano. The lowest end ones I run are the M445/6 and they're better in every way than my BB5s and can be had for less money than BB7s. More power, better modulation, more and better pad choices, and easier to set up.

My BB5s don't even have a consistent feel, the rear feels like turd due to the longer cable and an awkward bend just before the caliper, an issue you don't get with hydros. This is after fucking around for ages getting them set up the best I can, and then as the pads wear I'll have to keep adjusting them and then start all over again when I replace the pads.

>the BB7s are a perfectly fine option.
I'd say adequate, in the sense that they can stop the bike if needed. If they come stock on a bike or hydros aren't an option (using drop bars for example and have a low budget) then fine, but as an upgrade choice they're pretty dumb.

If you want discs and you don't want to deal with hydraulic, go with the TRP Spyre/Spyke brakes. They're dual piston, less finicky to set up and easier to adjust, and not much more expensive than the BB7s. They use Shimano pads, so you'll always be able to find parts.

To everyone trying to sell hydro discs: Yes, hydro discs are great (I have them on half my bikes), but mechanical discs are still SO MUCH BETTER than the brakes of 10 years ago; they're way more than adequate.

That setup is backward as fuck. If you're going to mismatch disc sizes, put the smaller one in the rear... weight transfer under braking means you can put a lot more braking force into the front wheel without locking, it's the same reason cars have larger brakes up front...
>>
>>951322
I get that, ideally they'd both be 140mm but the frame can't go any smaller. Of course it could also be setup with 160mm in the front but if 140mm is enough then going larger is just more weight for the sake of aesthetics.
>>
>>951321
Woah those look really cool, but where would I find them in Europe easily? They seem like an American market thing.
>>
>>951323
>more weight
dude it's going to be what, 20 grams more for better brake force where it matters
it's not a must have, but don't put it on weight.
>>
>>951326
I'm not saying that would be my personal choice, just that for some people weight is a reason for running smaller discs. Other reasons I forgot to mention are greater forces acting on the fork (could either cause damage or eject the wheel from the dropouts), aerodynamics, and clearance issues. If these didn't exist then of course everyone would be running 203mm discs.

Can someone help me identify my bike..?
I know this sounds super stupid, but i never really looked super close at it, but it was just stolen from me and it was a gift, so i'd really, really like to be able to up my chances of getting it back..

Looks like a Trek
>>
>>951328
well yeah, you're right, but I just thing weight isn't reaaaally the point between 140's and 160's. If I had the same bike I'd keep 140's because fuck spending money just so I have the rotors looking nice, I'm sure the brakes work perfectly well.
>>

I concur. It's a Trek.

1980's Fuji Del Ray VAlite tubing.
Recently upgraded basic modern shimano parts for vintage Suntour Le Pree derailleurs. It's also got a clusterfuck of random other parts.
She was my dad's until he had me and my brothers, he gave it to me once I could fit it and I've been riding it ever since (~8ish years)

Stop angling the brake lever in you silly man, and unwrap that top downtube. Also fix saddle height. Would like if not for this completely unneccessary faggotry.
