Ropeways general thread. Post all about: Chairlifts, Gondolas, Aerial trams, Cable Ferries ect. lets see some cool pics. This one is a ropeway in BC that served a microwave repeater site. It was decommisioned in 2005.

3 There is a picture of the upper station hidden somewhere on the internet but I've failed to find it thus far.
4 last picture. It was almost 3km in length and supported by only two towers as it climbed from the side of BC Highway 5 up to the ridge of Mt. Jarvis. The cabin is supported by two track cables and hauled up with a single continuous loop drive line. The large checkered tower at the base station housed the massive counterweights to maintain tension of the track cables. The base station still exists today however all the cable, support towers and upper station have been demolished and removed.
Exploring old aerial trams is a lot of fun tbh fam.

Most of the western states of America have some industrial tram lines still standing, virtually none of them have been in use since the 1940s or earlier. The biggest thing is knowing where they are and having the means and ability to hike to them. I've visited about a dozen in California and Nevada but there are probably hundreds of mining-related tramways in the western US, mostly in the desert or mountainous areas. Some of them are marked on old topo maps if they were big enough, but most were jerry-rigged things with just a few tram towers and a wire cable.
One of the more famous tramways still standing is the Saline Valley Salt Tram, located in Saline Valley, California. Plenty of people have hiked parts of that one (I haven't yet) and it gives a good idea of the remoteness and accessibility of most of the remaining tram systems.
What was the place in some 'kistan named place in the former central asian soviet republics that had dozens of these built for mining purposes?
Saw a thread in English Russia some years back. They were all in terrible disrepair, covered in rust and decades worth of grease but still operational and in use.

cable car at Stone Mountain, Ga. the carvings are of the leaders of the Confederate States of America; Robert E. Lee for sure, I think Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson and one other. anyway, it's a beautiful park and I recommend walking up the trail, it's on the opposite side with a gentile slope, there's lots of trees and cool outcroppings. We rode the cable car down because my friend's old knee injury kicked in after we got up there.
It was really cool. the lady "driving" it gave a little presentation and could field questions. the side it's on is steep and the drop-off made it exciting.
also, the surrounding town is now majority black (lots of central asians, too) and that's mostly who goes to the park. a whole meadow of folks sit for the laser light show projected over the carving of CSA generals. if you aren't from this area, it might seem odd that easily half or more of the spectators are black, but it's a fun family thing to do and people here don't get bent out of shape about history. not that they're Uncle Toms by any means, they're just over it, is all.

It is a wonderful park. Also it is the world's largest bas relief carving.
I wish they wouldn't put the MLK bell tower on top of mountain and over the carving. That is going to cause way too much butt hurt.
I suiggest instead that they put the bell tower at the foot of the walking trail. That way hundreds of people a day will get to walk by it. While also keeping the white southerners happy.

I meant white people, too. you always put a bell up a high as possible so it can ring out farthest. that's why they're always in towers. nobody puts a bell at ground level, that's retarded. most white southerners under 50 are just not especially racist anymore (they are, but not out-of-proportion with anywhere else, I mean.) Stone Mtn is not that rural, you can see it from ATL. everyone listens to rap music and what have you. rednecks gonna be rednecks, but as a white southerner myself, I don't find the idea all that radical, personally.

OP here For anyone who needs education,
these are bucket trams for mine ore, they didnt carry people. They had large buckets strung along their length and many didnt even require an engine or motor to run, instead relying simply on the weight of the ore taking the full buckets down the mountain. This system was usually used when the mine itself was high up on a mountain, but the mill for the ore was constructed at the base (usually near a town) for cost cutting.

Between the german towns Nußloch and Leimen, a 5 km ropeway exists for limestone transportations.
Also my hometown is thinking about a ropeway to connect the main station, the main uni campus and a school centre, though I think the reactions are mostly negative. So, for the most track the Leimen ropeway is easily accesible, especially with a bike. It goes through two villages and there is always a pathed way near it. Only the mine is a bit on the outside, and you would have to climb a hill to reach it.

Not really. They occupy completely different niches.
Aerial ropeways are amazing for crossing otherwise impassable terrain at low cost, but are vulnerable to strong winds, have limited capacity and their large stations and trickle of riders don't really integrate with other transit well.
Subways are the highest capacity transit mode known to man, but are very expensive if you don't actually need that high capacity.

Near the old Mt. Jarvis tram is one of the last radio complex access trams in BC on Dog Mountain just West of Hope, BC. and all you get is a cage to ride in. heres a vid some radio tech took riding it up (with some over the top soundtrack added)

A cableway to the third highest mountain in Slovakia. That thing is 1,872 meters long, climbs 851 height meters and has only one support 104 meters below the upper station...
OMG. Someone else gives a shit about Ropeways! Never expected them to come up on /n/.
They used to be as insanely common as big chimneys where I live, Wales, along with Funiculars, or "Inclines" as they were known here. (Other love of mine.) Never used for people movement, though there's many a tale of miners using them against the rules. Just for shifting mined rock, mining spoil and furnace slag.
....Then the mining and smelting got forcably wiped out. Bastards.
It's rare to even find a local my age that remembers them, despite being so recent and common.

Favorite chairlift at my favorite resort, 2nd image doesn't capture it, but there's a large dip you go over with a frozen lake.
Too bad their replacing this with a quad so all the shit skiers can get to a part of the mountain they probably shouldn't even be on in the first place.

I believe they are to keep the wires in relative proximity and configuration to each other, as movement in high winds can cause wear if they contact each other, and problems for the gondola running gear if they move apart. The orange colour is to help aircraft see the wires (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalese_cable_car_disaster_(1998)).
