I tried listening to Kid A few months ago.
Stopped at The National Anthem because a radio station that I listen to uses the instrumental as a bed for live commercials that they do. I didn't even know that was a real song.
Totally killed it for me. I should probably listen to the rest though.

Honestly I'm kind of beating myself up that after four or five listens nothing's standing out. I could only give the vaguest descriptions of half of the songs- there's a couple of bits that stick in my head slightly ('broken hearts, make it rain'), but I couldn't actually tell you which songs they were in. It all just blurs into one.
Basically it makes me feel like a pleb. Also the cover looks way too much like a face.

This thread feels reddity. Must be the positivity.
>>64755980
Really? I see a lot of distinction between the songs. I think they come together through the intricate layering of classical and electronic arrangements but in terms of sheer style the only songs that sound particularly similar are the folk rock stylings of Desert Island Disk and The Numbers. Every other song sounds like its own thing to me.
>>64756074
Oh yeah, that does, but then I'd already heard it- same for Daydreaming and True Love Waits. It's everything in between that smooshes together. It's weird- I don't think they've done an album which sounds so samey since The Bends.

Do you guys really like AMSP that much?
I mean damn I'm enjoying it but it's far below Kid A, OkC and In Rainbows.
For me, the dust has not really settled with this new record. I really do enjoy listening to it, but it feels like at least a part of that enjoyment it due to the buzz, and hype I have build up around the mere notion of a new RH-album.
The times I actually do process the nature of the record, I find it to be quite spotty songwriting-wise. The production is great, and there's a clear 'sound' resonating throughout the piece, but I find some of the tracks lackluster.

This
I think it's a beautiful really well done album. The production is outstanding and each song uses so many sounds and instruments that it is an album that really shines when you listen to it and focus on different aspects of it.
Each song is sonically different yet the album works a cohesive unit. I can't say every song is great but I'd say the majority are at least a 9/10.
Sprinkled in throughout are sounds of Radiohead throughout their career, and at the same time the orchestral work separates it from everything else they've done.
It's a really great album. 9.5/10 for me.

I was incredibly surprised. I became a Radiohead fan right after "In Rainbows" was released (after knowing absolutely nothing about them besides "Creep" and accidentally downloading "Nude" off of Limewire, lel), and it's vindicating to finally get to experience a new Radiohead album that's potentially a classic. I remember rumors circulating that they would go in a folk/post-rock direction for TKOL, and I was pretty hyped for that. Now it's finally here.

I wouldn't say they make the album better, but I can confirm both can help you "immerse" yourself in the music.
I find the alcohol helps you focus on the sad, melancholic aspects of Thom's lyrics and bud just helps you get comfy and absorb all the little sounds the album has to offer.
Obviously you'd be using good quality headphones, right anon?
>>64757979
second this. I like AMSP fine but I think this honeymoon phase is clouding how good their earlier stuff is.

It's pretty good I guess in a semi "objective" sense. But I feel like they changed up their cool dark/weird "Radiohead" chord progressions.
The Numbers sounds like an ELO song mixed with some Tom Petty or something. Kinda "lame" in my harsh opinion. But a good track for what it is.

yeah i agree. pyramid song is one their best songs imo. I really like what greenwood has done with the strings recently. A. The 5000 post (or whatever) thread was amazing. A lot of cool discussions in there.
B. Here's what I -honestly- think of the album: best Radiohead in 13 years. I'm not going to lie and act like one of those guys who considers In Rainbows some flawless masterpiece. It's good but it lacked something. AMSP is beautiful. Daydreaming has a serious emotional impact on me each time I replay the record. Not a single time have I not had the hairs on my body stand up when 5:03 to the ending kicks in. That's honestly the best we're ever getting from Jonny's orchestral role in Radiohead and it's one of the best things they've ever recorded. Ful Stop is a lovely, energetic, angsty track I can only compare to the opening of HTTT. Decks Dark is serene. Desert Island Disk is the only real misstep in this record IMO and Spectre would have better taken its place.
Extremely solid. Not going to rank it because that's not possible yet but it's great.
C. To the guy from the other thread who oddly said Burn The Witch sounded like something from NIN's The Fragile: I was intrigued by the comment and relistened to that earlier today. I see the connection - the strings and guitars are produced very similarly on that album and I think you probably had The New Flesh/Wretched in the back of your head; latter chugs along at a similar pace by the end. On a side note, Tinker Tailor's opening sounds are reminiscent of Tobacco.
D. The ironic ending is the saddest, bleakest thing I've ever heard from Radiohead. Taking the side of True Love Waits being better like this. The track got a Motion Picture Soundtrack treatment and it's better off with it.
The lads have done it again and Thom's heartbreak rekindled a dying fire. Superb job all around.
>>64769714
Desert Island Disk is my least favorite on the album but I wouldn't quite call it a misstep. The repeating riff has a sort of hypnotic effect and the supplementary instrumentation that kicks in only drives that effect home. Lyrically it's a bit whimsical even for my tastes but I'll still take it over The Numbers in that regard at least. I'm personally hesitant to take it off the album despite it being my least favorite. I think it still has enough going for it to earn its place, if not just barely.

It's more its position on the record and how it was rendered. I feel the same way about Identikit and Present Tense which are good songs but are not nearly as good as they could be with a slightly different sound (Identikit's percussion is a bit bland, etc.) - I expected this though considering the last two records had songs that are much better relayed through their live versions.
It seems there's a time in every white, male, middle class, suburban millennial's life where we, usually around the age of 13, fall in love with Radiohead. It's a perfectly natural reaction. Their melodramatic, angst-ridden screeds against vague ideas of corporate evil and heads of state fit perfectly into our newly minted interests in things we can hardly begin to understand. But you don't need to understand much to fully appreciate being holed up in your bedroom listening to Let Down on blast on our iPod alarm clock radio while thinking about your crush in Algebra who looked at you for a full 2 seconds that day. For their part, Radiohead has done well in transitioning these 13 y/os with burgeoning interests in music to transition to less juvenile acts. They've aped Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Can, etc and thusly led their teenage fans down that road. Fast forward to their latest, 'A Moon Shaped Pool'. Radiohead seem to have given up on appropriating genuinely interesting music in favor of rehashing what sounds like a mishmash of Coldplay's greatest hits. For any well-learned, well-listened educated person the fact that the album is bad is not surprising. Radiohead have never produced a genuinely good album in their careers. But, still, they served a valuable purpose in the lives of music fans by leading them to greener pastures. With their ninth record instead they give them the finger and point to A.M.-radio-Superbowl-halftime-life-insurance-commercial ""rock"" music. Rock in scare quotes because as much as they still retain their love for guitars and drums and bass this is the most flaccid sound ever produced from an ostensibly uproarious art form. I mean, Steely Dan managed to make tepid rock music sound nice by combining it with white-people-jazz and a supreme ear for melody but I can't say anything as redeeming for this heap Radiohead has put out. It's mid-tempo background music for 50 minutes.
>>64769784
Literally 80% of all the ratings.
What do you expect other than this: >>64769782
I've never heard a real 10 from Radiohead (I've never heard a 10, period, ever) and nothing they've released deserves a 0 or 1 either.
Lot of Pitchforky shit when it comes to ranking the albums, which is an unnecessary task in the first place.

Yorke has the only side project that I listened to so I guess him.
... im just gonna say it, after giving it 2 more hearings i have to say that im kind of disappointed, and i dont quite understand why, the first hearing was great but after the third one today...
and then i listened TKOL after a year or so and it seemed to be comparable in quality, maybe even better, wich is underwhelming
when i first heard "burn the witch" i thought it was going to be like the original score that greenwood wrote for "the master" but with thom, wich usually would mean something better but i doesnt seem like it
maybe it is the kind of album that grows with you over the time.
i have to say that even tho im tecnically saying something negative about this album, i liked every single song except for "the numbers", i guess that i settled the bar too high after "in rainbows"
