i think we're talking about two different things - i'm not saying someone should be judged for being uncomfortable around homosexuality if they're trying to be okay with it. the problem is when people aren't actually trying to be more ok with it, they just think that declaring themselves "tolerant" is all you have to do to be good to gay people. in order to be respectful you have to actually follow through. if i say i'm not racist but cross the street every time i see a black person, i'm still behaving in a racist way, and it would be fair for black people to say i'm not as non-racist as i think/say i am. it's up to me to ignore that instinct that says to be fearful of black people and actually treat them equally
