I downloaded altars of madness from rutracker but "lord of all fevers and plague" is missing (not on google "altars of madness tracklist" either). Was this a bonus track or something?
>>
What are some black or death metal bands that use a piano (not keyboard, and not a sampled piano like from a movie or something), either as an intro or interlude or backing instrument or whatever? These are the only songs I can think of:
Entombed - DCLXVI
another Entombed song I'm forgetting
Sepulchral Zeal - Open, Ye Core
Cultes Des Ghoules - The Devil Intimate
>>
>>66416345

>>66416361
there should be a band who extensively used to piano

That caverncore Sepulchral Zeal song works surprisingly well with the looming, rich tones of the piano. I would love to see a caverncore OSDM band use a piano extensively like some death metal bands use keyboards.

Honestly couldn't manage to get through the entire album. Not only does it sound exactly like the last two, but it somehow sounds even more homogenous. No diversity in rhythm, it sounds like their only worry is to stack same-lenght notes that sound "pretty" and "sad" when in succession, but there is little actual musicality Also vocalist is really really monotonous.

I expected more. Really wanted to like this. Oh well, we got Insomnium and Dark Tranquillity in a bit.

>Be'lakor are a soulless Dark Tranquillity clone who have managed to suck all of the life out of melodic death metal. They use a template of the general sound of more recent DT mixed with the slightly atmospheric, doom-tinged emotional approach of Insomnium. They're best compared to those Finns, since their style is to make plastic-sounding, lame melodeath that sounds like the skeleton of Dark Tranquillity after having the meat stripped from the bones and the soul swallowed. This is boring, uninteresting melodic death metal.

Oh god, yes. OG is a band I like to check out but I don't necessarily love. They have written their best music long ago (perfume garden and first half of Redshift), they are nowadays just a shitty B-tier Insomnium-wannabes. I don't mind that they are a clone of someone, I mind that they are doing it in a very poor way and that their music is retardedly obnoxious to listen to. New OG is a bit better than last one with its shitty AOR moments, but still very very meh. They also share the shitty vocalist issue with Be'lakor.

In Mourning is somehow even more meh. I've been following those guys since their first album was leaked on melodeath.org all those years ago. Loved the super sharp production of the debut with the romantic prog-death vibe. Monolith was even better, I'd give that album a fucking 90% rate easily, truly their best effort. Third was alright but that's where they really started to drag out their songs for artsy fartsy purposes, plus those Reinkaos riffs really don't work for them. They don't understand that their strenght lies in vocals - very pleasant cleans and raspy, frustrating, intense harsh vocals. Also catchy melodic guitar leads, certainly not in the shitty 10 minutes long meh songs. I liked the first two singles but entire album is a bit too much to absorb. I also really don't like the shitty Dan Swano production style, guitars are going through 5 delay pedals, it doesn't sound precise. They are now a 2nd rate October Tide clone, who are a shitty 2nd rate doom metal band themselves, not concise prog death that I grew to love.

I'm gonna spew more pretentious shit opinions and go in more depth than melodeath should require but anyway.
MPE is good stuff, when it's good its fucking top tier, when its bad its still mediocre and listenable. Debut album has a very unique atmosphere but quality itself is very forgettable, its early 2000s finnish modern melodeath 101. I personally think they peaked on The Unborn, and to a degree, on Liberation Termination. The thing is that they had two (original) guitar players who were into power metal and didn't quite like melodeath so the ending result is obviously going to be somewhat unique, and in a really good fucking way. The Unborn had atmosphere, that surreal almost industrial-sounding drum sound, at moments very mechanical sounding but in an amazing way. Liberation was all 240pm FUN riffs, especially Cleansing Rain. That song fucking rocks, that drummer was underrated as shit, and hasn't done anything after to my knowledge.

Then they changed lineups, two guitarists left, drunmmer left, and they got new guys. New bongland guitar player is actually stupidly talented composer and performer so they are now sounding as good as they can possibly get. He is exceptionally skilled with emulating specific sound palletes, but they are clearly now overall more into synthy atmoshit mid-tempo melodeath with catchy riffs, it's more "fun factor" metal than before. Last two albums are nice to listen to and overall quality shit, just not as good as older stuff was. Probably one of the more consistent melodeath bands out there, for sure. Also I really love the vocalist, his voice and delivery is just great.
>>
>>66421199
Agree The Unborn is their best, this song is top tier

I also don't get why Liberation = Termination is regfarded as their weakest since it still has some solid tunes

NWS was great but I would've prefered it as a one-time spinoff or off shoot record if you will, because two following records are just bleak copies of it. OG is the band that is at their best when they have a bit of that previously mentioned "fun factor", the super serious "adult oriented melodic death metal" as they like to call it just comes off as pretentious without the substance to support it.

Also speaking of 2010- onwards melodeath albums, I remember reaaaally listening to shitton of last MyGrain album.

Yeah that's my main problem with OG and Be'lakor as well, they try to act so serious and mature yet they can't back it up as well as Garden of Shadows, Edge of sanity and Early Insomnium did.
Or if they were DT who while serious are still fun to listen to
At least none of the sold out as hard as In Flames.

I thought Enshine was pretty nice new band
>>
>>66421064
considering yourself "too mature" for metal goes hand in hand with considering yourself an expert on genres you've barely listened to
>>
>>66421268
The problem with Liberation=Termination is that it has a fairly low replayability, and that once you've heard it about four or five times, it gets REALLY grating.
Cause it's somewhat catchy, but it doesn't have really orgasmic riffs or great grooves like you'd get from power or glam metal, so it ends up sticking in your head in an annoying way.

It's just jarring for me to hear virtuosic soaring vocals over heavy down-tuned chugs. Each is fine in its own right, just not together.
The other thing is that prog metal is very instrument-focused. I feel that the vocals, if there are any at all, need to step back and try to blend in, rather than dominate. But it seems like TesseracT's vocals are always in my face.

Kel Valhaal is the name of the logical agency of faith and acephalic becoming in the The Ark Work, a gesamtkunstwerk which lives at the threshold between philosophical materialism and religion. It is also the moniker for the electronic project I’ve had going since 2010, though I’ve never done an official release until now. The aim of the project is to activate transcendental catharsis using the elements of sound design, and to gnaw on formal and cultural deadlocks between electronic music, rock, rap and classical music. Ultimately these are means of activating a creative-emotive state of divine intuition that is attuned to the object of ultimate concern: what the mystics call the “gift of tears”.
“If Liturgy is a vehicle for grand rock albums, Kel Valhaal is more low key, more of an ongoing flicker;; less finely wrought, with more frequent and shorter releases, more variation, less consistency, more experimentation.
“This music should be approached as one of three wings of a rotating vortex of music, thought and drama called The Perichoresis. Taking up the legacy of American Transcendentalism and German Romanticism with all its contradictory attraction and repulsion to/from underground music culture, the project has a horizon that is ethical, political, and eschatological. Kel Valhaal in part functions to ground Transcendental Qabala (a system of thought) as is also in part the manifestation of Aesthethics (an art practice). These three wings of the Perichoresis propel the ongoing drama of The Ark Work, which is a messianic intervention into global destiny.

What movies are black metal?
>>
>>66425309
it's mostly because it takes more from screamo and shoegaze than from black metal, and because there was this influx of kids going "WOW, I DON'T LIKE BLACK METAL BUT I LIKE THIS" as if it were representative of BM as a whole. So it's more of an attempt to dissociate BM from Deafheaven. I guess you can like it, but acknowledge that it's barely black metal.

>but it's is still clearly melodeath
This is objectively wrong.

Spectral Sorrows still holds the whole Stockholm sound. They were VERY much a part of the Stockholm scene. But the album delves a bit into gothic rock (see Sacrificed) and has very mild black metal influences (the lyrics and theme from Jesus Cries, etc), since Axelsson was the original vocalist and one of the main song writers in Marduk's founding lineup.

There is nothing "melodeath" about this album at all.

>>
>>66425462
It's like they're allergic to trying to write something good. Every riff they write needs to be as cluttered and frantic as can be with no regard to tone or direction.
Off the bat this is just another death metal album in name only, it has the growls, it has the distortion, and it has the hyper fast drumming, but everything is assembled so mechanically together, topped off with such digital cleanness and shiny pristine, like it wants to seem heavy but is so ashamed to be a part of the scene. There's no passion here, it's like some snobby music professors tried their hands at making "intelligent" death metal, they wrote a checklist for what they thought would be necessary to count as death metal and then filled it with needless complexity for that "intelligent" aspect. Riffs vary between being fast and intricate slurries of notes to being basic, but still fast, death metal chugs you've heard a million times over, everything wrapped up in a brick walled to fuck production where bass is only audible when the band wants to remind you that they do indeed have a bassist. Songs are long, aimless, and twist and turn without any bit of focus. Riff (and I use that term quite loosely here) leading into riff leading into solo leading into riff comprises the song writing ideas here, with some occasional orchestral samples thrown in to make this album seem grander than it is. It's a nauseating and headache inducing experience, while not as annoying as Brain Drill or Monumental Torment, it's equally as flashy and unnecessary. Completely irredeemable garbage with not one decent moment in its duration.

Prog is accurate, as they are one of the bands that started introducing progressive elements into Stockholm's death metal sound. This started with their song Enigma, then carried into Twilight and some other songs on Purgatory Afterglow and they went full prog/death on Crimson.

>melodeath
Only ignorant people who have no idea what this genre sounds like actually call EoS such.

It's just common knowledge that Spectral Sorrows and Purgatory Afterglow are melodeath, don't waste your time arguing with retards.

1- are you actually surprised?

2- there is more than one band that used that name or some variant of it:

http://www.metal-archives.com/search?searchString=fuck+off&type=band_name

3- there are way sillier/dumber names for bands.
