Synthwave as a broad genre is mildly popular on the indie level. Synthwave that is also chillwave, like Com Truise, has achieved the most.

Fuck no. Tool and The Mars Volta are really the only two prog bands that effectively crossed over in recent history, and I doubt either of them plan on releasing a record anytime soon. The Dear Hunter and Steven Wilson aren't nearly as popular.
