We're all going to die.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, laugh profusely at Jangle's Thrift Tourney, eat daddies cummies, and just let the good times role.

Tetsu Saitoh - Stone Out (1st impressions)
Have you ever fucked around on an unstrument, making weird sounds and patterns and thought "I bet if a bunch of talented musicians played off this idea, it'd make some pretty cool shit! And holy shit, this is cool.
It is free-improv without all the hang-ups of regular free improv, in that it exudes enough structure for each piece to be uniquely interesting.
I'd hesitate to call this third-stream, as it isn't particularly 'jazzy' and certainly wouldn't pass for 'classical', but I think it serves as a loosely apt description; it's hard to pull influences from this one.
That said, this is not Sunday morning music, or background music at a party, nor fitting for just about any other scenario where music would be played at. This is music solely be listened to attentively, and loving it or hating it both seem like equally valid responses.
Fortunately, I align on the 'love it' side of things.

Melorman - Out in a Field (2009)
>idm, downtempo

Literally the same exact record as that Bonobo one I listened to for this chart a couple days ago. Pleasant enough downtempo, almost IDM-ish stuff, but it's just a total bore at points. I can't remember a single motif from these album, even after a couple listens. Well, there is a cool song where the beat is constructed from a very distinctly mechanical, piston-esque sound, but that's really it. Totally pleasant and well put together, but it just doesn't grab me a single bit.

The Blue Nile - Hats (1989)
>sophisti-pop

With this, Viva Hate, Green River, and Still Brazy, my taste has been totally betraying me lately. Ultra lush, exceedingly well-produced, smooth as silk 80s pop music is totally the antithesis to everything I generally like in music, but this is fucking /good/. Loses a fair bit of steam in it's second half, as it really doesn't have any ideas past "sad, lonely man trapped in a lush sea of great production and drum machines", but the first four or so tracks are pretty damn great, I just love the atmosphere this creates. And it is quite a fair bit cheesy at points, but eh, that's just par for the course with this kind of music.

i'd like to apologize for how much i've changed the albums on this list but some things i couldn't find a decent download for and i just didn't care enough to search for a working one

i'm very committed, i know!

Delia Derbyshire & Barry Bermange - Invention for Radio No. 1: The Dreams (1964)
>tape music, spoken word, experimental, ambient

Definitely more of a super interesting historical landmark than a super engaging piece of ambient tape music, but it's still really cool to listen to. It's anachronistic as hell, the real big pioneers of ambient like Popol Vuh, Tangerine, Dream, and Fripp/Eno wouldn't be doing stuff like this for another half-decade, and this is more out there and just batshit insane than the rest of these artists' output put together. The pieces themself are a bit plodding and uninteresting at times, rarely changing in a meaningful way, but the spoken word over the tops of these pieces adds so much to the creepy, unsettling atmosphere of the recording as a whole. Really interesting stuff.

i havent found enjoyment in brutal death metal for some time but atm im feeling like going back to it a bit

vocals are usually just boring, it blends together easily because of general timbral monotony and the fact that the tracks arent "compressable" (to one main idea) but exactly that latter aspect - tracks jumping from one short, punchy passage to another swiftly - is kinda what i feel like rn

Ferraro's expertise lies in making bizarre ambient-ish distortions of disposable genres. This album's target: Pop R&B and Trap. Warbling autotune vocals, minimal instrumentation, and the odd sample here or there. Shows that post-hypnogogic Ferraro never does the same thing twice on a main discography album.

Since we're /dead/ I'll spam some radiohead reviews..

>Radiohead – Hail To The Thief

Kid A/Amnesiac sessions took forever to complete, so for the next album Radiohead moved to LA with Nigel/Stanley and recorded the album fast. Hail To The Thief was Thom’s big political statement at the time (still is the biggest imo) and mostly concentrates on that.

The opening 2+2=5 harks back at the OKC era with a straight up rock elements and Orwell-esque lyrics (cringe). Thom screaming “PAYING ATTENTION” is fucking awesome though and there is nothing that can change that. The opening chord progression is nice.

Sit Down, Stand Up is a definite highlight. It’s like a burst of grim colors. Starting off with slow piano progression from Thom and building up to an explosion of drum machines and analog synths. It melts my face along with “THE RAINDROPS” section.

Sail To The Moon is so beautiful. Thom on the piano and Jonny on the Starcaster performing a song for Thom’s son. This track is one of the indicators of Thom’s improving piano skills. At least from my perspective. The closing section of chord strums is somber and soothing.

Backdrifting is ok. The chorus delivery is awesome, but the rest is eh. No wonder it sort of died out from the live setting after the support tour.

Go To Sleep is a Neil Young style track that I would mostly praise for what was cut out of the studio version. Jonny Greenwood’s Max/MSP solo for me personally was one of the most eye-widening experiences as a beginning guitarist. I do realize that actually recreating what he does is not as hard as it seems (I mean cmon, he just threw random SFX at the time of random notes played) but man did it sound weird and looked cool as fuck.
>>
>>66148561
Where I End And You Begin has a sick bassline and I really enjoy the clean guitar tone from Thom prior to the third verse. The final coda vocal delivery is cool too. This one reminds me of a certain Muse song, don’t remember the name of it. I think it was Map Of Probkematique or something.

We Suck Young Blood would be a snooze if not for the one of the highest moments on this album. The jazz-y interlude. Goddamn that thing kicks major ass.

The Gloaming is underrated as fuck. The bass line and the old programmed loop from the Kid A era work perfectly together. Did I mention the bass line? One of Colin’s peaks. This song owns, especially live.

There There was the main single and rightfully so. I really like the sound of Thom’s Gibson ES-125T that provides the wavy feedback at the start of the track. The drumming trio on this (Jonny and Ed play t(h)om drums) adds a lot onto the track. I really love Jonny’s solo here as well. The track is great even from the lyrical perspective, with “we are accidents waiting to happen” and “just cause you feel it doesn’t mean it’s there” being the 2 main standouts.

I Will is, as Thom claims, the angriest song he has ever written. It sounds absolutely heavenly though, but the undertones of frustration and anger are well-noticeable. I prefer the Los Angeles mix of the track because of the extended intro. Also, this is what Like Spinning Plates sounds like when played the normal way around.

Punchup At A Wedding isn’t that strong of a track but I don’t think it is bad either. The vocal delivery of certain moments on it (the verse especially) make up for the mediocre lyrics and a boring musical progression.

Myxomatosis is a dirty fucker. Ed’s riff combined with Colin’s bass playing sounds grimy as hell. I think this is the only song that Ed uses a Fernandes Native Pro live. Interesting. Thom does an overly aggressive delivery on this one.

Scatterbrain is a very mellow track but there is something about Thom’s moaning on this song that is pretty and haunting at the same time. I do like Jonny’s clean guitar section here as well.

Wolf At The Door is another close contender for the best track of the album. A spoken word delivery from Thom with disturbing images to a very cool chord progression (reminds me of She’s So Heavy, mostly due to that Dm chord) from Jonny and all ending up with a very soft and sincere croon from Thom. Fantastic closer. They certainly know how to close off their albums.

I think the rushed production of the album and the rework of the leaked tracks took away some power from certain songs but it is a good album in general. Not my definite favorite by any means, but it has some great tracks I really like, especially Sit Down,Stand Up, The Gloaming Wolf At The Door, I Will, There There and Go To Sleep.

>Radiohead – In Rainbows

The recording sessions for In Rainbows took a while. They tested it out with a 2006 tour, in which they introduced a couple of new tracks as well as reworks of old material. The Dead Air Space blog was very active during these times so fans had an idea of what to expect from the upcoming tour (the infamous blackboard with track names). The actual release of IR occurred in 2007 under the revolutionary “pay what you want” model, which was the first big “fuck you” from Radiohead on their first post-EMI contract release.

The album opens with 15 Step. A programmed electronic beat opens up the track and is completely neutralized by the warm and soothing riff from Jonny. The guitar tone is sublime. Thom delivers an upbeat vocal performance while Colin absolutely slays the bass. I suggest watching the performance of this track from the Grammy show, where they had a whole marching band playing the percussive section.

Bodysnatchers used to be my favorite thing to break guitar picks to. Drop-D crunch from Thom’s SG (I think he stopped using the Jazzmaster for this track right after the 2006 tour), fantastic key change for the second section and a passionate closing delivery. My preferred version of this track is the Thumbs Down broadcast version.

Nude is a fan favorite, long lost classic from the OK Computer era. The name of it used to be “Big Ideas” and Thom got to perform it on numerous occasions, whether with the band or solo. The extra verses were removed and the “you’ll go to hell…” part is used as the culmination of the track without any additional choruses. The strings brought in by Jonny and, most importantly, Colin’s outstanding new bass line brought the track into a completely different mood. Thom’s vocal delivery is sublime. No wonder In Rainbows era is considered to be one of the highest points in his vocal career. Brilliant.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi was premiered by Thom and Jonny a couple of years prior with the London Sinfonietta performance. The bare-bone arpeggios are preferable for me personally, but what they did in the studio with the great drum beat, bass line and guitar duets is neat. It is a great track but I don’t feel that charmed by it.

All I Need is one of the strongest tracks on the albums, especially the brilliant intensity in the closing section. Jonny playing the piano really raises the track’s level of intimacy right there. Thom’s lyrics help the cause as well.

Faust Arp is a soft Beatlesque acoustic ballad with pretty string arrangements towards the end. I like playing this on guitar. It is very simple, straight to the point but I can see how a lot of people consider it to be the most
underwhelming track on the album.

Reckoner is overrated. I think Thom’s falsetto reaches its peaks but also manages to enter the era of being just slightly annoying even to my fanboy ear. The guitar and the percussion sound great though. The latter is the only thing left from the original “Reckoner” from 2001, which would be later retitled to Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses and released as a single from Thom and Jonny. Dunno. It’s a pretty song but it never really struck me as much as it did most of the Radiohead fanbase.

House Of Cards is about swinging. Yet, somehow, it manages to sound very romantic. I recommend listening to the 2005 solo version from Thom of this track because I personally think it sound absolutely brilliant. What is good about the studio version though is Jonny’s coin playing, which is definitely my favorite coin-playing performance from the younger Greenwood.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place is easily the best track on the album. The chord progression on this one is probably the best one from Radiohead, bar none. Pearl of a song. It was performed during the 2006 tour under the working title “Open Pick” which definitely has something to do with the open DBF#DAD tuning it employs. Thom’s delivery during the second verse is truly fantastic. Everything about this track is just perfect.

The closing Videotape is very dark and gloomy. A drum beat exists somewhere near the main piano riff from Thom and his extremely up-close vocals about a set of memories to be stored upon and after death by the song’s protagonist. Interesting theme of the track and a sad way to end the album.

For the giggles I will give one-liner thoughts on CD 2 tracks that were released with the physical copy of IR.

MK1 is a short instrumental tape cut reimagination of Videotape.

Down Is The New Up is a very old song reworked and released, classic rock tune.

Go Slowly is a soft and gorgeous Can tribute.

MK2 is another tape trick.

Last Flowers is a crushing piano dirge, was even more crushing on an acoustic guitar.

Up On The Ladder is alright. Rock tune again.

Bangers + Mash has Thom co-drumming and Jonny playing awesome solos.

4 Minute Warning is another older tune with wonderful vocal performances.

Overall In Rainbows was good but I think it lacked certain elements for me to elevate it onto the “great” level, such as more daring songwriting. Jigsaw tho….

>Radiohead – The King Of Limbs

After several years of waiting, Radiohead released their eighth album in 2012 in a slightly less surprising way. The surprising thing came in when you actually listened to the album.

Bloom makes it clear from the first second that the sound of this record is extremely cold compared to the predecessor. The loops sound like they have been crushed, while the piano loops just keep the track barely alive. It was very discouraging on my first listen but I love it now. I feel like the live version increased my appreciation of the studio track. This statement can be applied to most of the tracks on the album.

Morning Mr. Magpie is even more claustrophobic with the guitars sounding as restricted as possible. It is not ferocious but it does seem to have a lot of energy locked down, released only through Yorke’s slightly anxious vocal performance. The guitar synchopation was flawlessly transmitted into the live version, where the band lets all the energy loose.

Little By Little is a hypnotic set of minimal arrangements with a cool Drop-D guitar groove. I like the small clean guitar glimpses during the chorus of the track. It feels very light and alarming at the same time, mostly due to the slight rhythmic irregularities. Here it actually feels like the synchopation is abandoned completely and one guitar is slightly late. This creates a very haunting sensation.

Feral is my favorite track on the album. Everything about it (including the barely decipherable lyrics) is just fantastic. The percussion is stellar. Colin delivers a smooth bass performance. Jonny uses his whammy for very nice pitch plays in line with Thom’s vocal cuts. The track title corresponds the sound of the track very well. Even more fun live.

Lotus Flower was premiered during Thom’s first stint with Atoms For Peace and is a very lovely track. Replacing the guitar with a synth, Thom gives off a very sincere and soft vocal performance about what sounds like an anthem for sleeping around.

Codex is a pretty song but I think it is the weakest track on the album. It mostly sounds like Pyramid Song and gives off a similar soothing vibe but without the mysterious bravado from the Amnesiac relative. The horns is the major highlight of this track.

Give Up The Ghost finds Thom using a looper for his vocal track and playing a very very simple D-Am tune with Jonny joining in for a small section closer to the end of the track. The vocal performance is bone-chilling on this one, especially with all the nature sounds thrown in somewhere in the back.

Separator is another 2 chord song but this one is definitely more developed, with the whole band closing off the album on a relaxed note, away from all the coldness on the first half of the album. I think that is a good exercise from the band to warm up towards the ending. What I specifically like about this track is Jonny’s little solo that emerges closer to the end of the track. Phil’s drumming is swell too.

ok I'm starting a tourney bear with me while I try to explain it

THE RYM TAG TAG TEAM TOURNEY
how it works- you and another /daily/ patrician team or (or you will get randomly assigned a partner if that's more your speed)
each round there are two rym tags, and you and your partner each submit an album for one of the two tags (as in, the first round's tags are melancholic and romantic, so one of you would rec an album tagged romantic and the other would rec an album tagged melancholic)

also IMPORTANT NOTE- I am accepting recs now because I don't want to forget this tourney idea, but I'm not starting it until after my current chart, so it will take me a little while to start.

Now let’s talk about the best thing about this album. Colin. His bass lines throughout the whole thing add so much grove to the tracks, keeping it all very clean and untainted by effects. The presence of the said frequencies on the recording is masterfully organized by Mr. Godrich, who singlehandedly saved what I would call a rather cold album by just letting it all go through a thawing period. Exactly what I want to hear.

Overall the album might be a little bit too short, but it really holds the shit together throughout its entirety. The live/basement versions of the tracks are even better. You can’t imagine how awestruck I was when the footage of Bloom from Glastonbury secret gig surfaced. It was something I wouldn’t expect to hear ever after the claustrophobic studio version (that fucking vocal aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh during the middle section of the track especially urhg). Shit is amazing, check it out.

Anyways, 8+/10

The patch on Go To Sleep is pretty simple if you think about it. The sound effects included were not random but if you watch his solo on Jools Holland performance it is clear that a lot of the soloing relies on randomly hitting these notes. The live performances of the solo are always different.

OK, so My Bloody Valentine - Eps 1988-1991
overall a pleasant experience like a 7 I guess
gonna break the review down though into EPs and singles and the like

You Made Me Realise
probably the best collection of songs included here
there are some right bangers here, it does something wholly different to the albums as well which is nioce, crunchy distortion shows a MBV on the cusp of their experimentation with effects and such and it's nice

Feed Me With Your Kiss
Stuff like Isn't Anything, it's the second best EP here, and shows that they hadn't quite mastered effects work yet, the distortion on I Believe is a bit ridiculous and amateur, altogether quite good

Glider
Wasn't really the greatest fan of this one, sure Soon, one of the better tracks of Loveless is there, but the rest of it is pretty average apart from Off Your Face, which is quite lovely

Tremolo
To Here Knows When and B-Sides off Loveless, it's not really that good

Instrumentals
bad, cheesy 90s club instrumental and a bad song framework
4/10

The rest of the tracks are quite good, bar full length Glider, which was extremely unnecessary

seen copies of this around town, might buy it, it'd be a cool thing to own

Nah, it's my lazy ass's fault. I've got it on Hold at my local library, and it's in the data-eating streaming app they provide access too, so I just need to get off my ass and listen to it that way. Really want to hear both these suggestions, so I'll do whichever you want, ruggles. I'll make time for it Wednesday, either way.

Yo Term is there anything I need to listen to or read up on before watching this? I like the cast.
>>
Hi, I'm fucking tired of /rym/ threads with their avant-teen drama and want to discuss a bit more about actual musik. I'm now listening to Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are by Vibracathedral Orchestra and right now it's going pretty good. Total raga repetition mixed with what may sound like horns from Master Musicians of Joujouka and a taste for noisy orgies.

Is there still room? Also, mind posting a list of people participating and their partners (and people still without partners)?
>>
>>66149474
I'll be your partner!

And yeah, both rym and chart threads are overly toxic and same-y, day-to-day. Don't expect too much high level discussion from /daily/ though. Also, if you plan on sticking around, tripping is pretty common around here.

Welcome aboard.

It actually is. There are really interesting uses of what seems to me as a sitar or a sarangi plus strings, and they really seem to be cohesive in terms of interplay. Right now I am listening to the second half of the album and the quality of composition seem as strong as the first half. Will be either a strong 7.5 or a light 8, methinks.

If that name means we aren't poseurs, then it's wrong but it sounds good so we'll go with it.
>>
>>66153744
grammatically yes, also it's a play on words because we're a force to be reckoned with, imposing on others
>>
>>66153572

I don't care about being the head (do we even need something like that? Sounds pretty bourgeois to me), but yeah, I need a partner. Got a name for our team? Do you want the romantic or melancholic rec?

The festival has been cancelled by authorities last thursday, but Outline announced it hours before the fest.
And not because of the permits or whatever. Here's an actual letter from the prefecture stating that organizers should have notified authorities at least month before the fest and they applied later, so there's that.

I'm totally clueless since it's my first day here. For tags, I'd prefer the romantic tag. Summer is a mating season after all...
