Well, "Drops wet cement on unsuspecting crippled children" isn't a real genre either, but we can all name a few artist categorizing as such.

It's just a way to refer to albums with a sad vibe. The -core suffix is used as a semi-humorous way to describe music that is similar in a non-musical aspect, e. g. /mu/core - albums that musically don't have one specific thing in common, but are described as such because they're popular on /mu/

It is sort of a genre, but Portishead and American Football are trip hop and emo bands. I don't know why those are here.......
