The year is now half over. Have you spent it wisely?

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, laugh profusely at Jangle's Thrift Tourney, regret life decisions, and just let the good times role.

lets get a consensus
>>

No.
>>
>>66106582
yeah. /daily/ will probably hate it because it's sort of popular but I enjoyed it.

I at least hope people don't latch on to the Electro-Swing thing and can at least find a creative reason to dislike something other than memery.

Not listened to it but I didn't like their first so I'm not rushing to hear it, I'll get round to it eventually though.

Four A Day July 2016.png
3MB, 1751x1219px
Disc one was left-overs and a lot of songs I'd heard before, but even though it seems to get the most flack here, I very much enjoyed it. The most like his oldest material, and I didn't mind that at all.

Disc two was definitely best. Every single song was on point, and imo his most original material. Adding the high pitched (I believe male) vocals in the background gave some much needed variation to this somewhat same-y box set.

While disc three had a lot of AMAZING tracks (Redemption song, Father and Son (with Fiona Apple), and Cindy (with NICK CAVE)) it still was the most wishy-washy imo. That's pretty unavoidable in a box set such as this probably.

Fourth disc was all hymns his mother taught him, and the most original of the four. Extremely spiritual/lifting, and I'm glad they break up some of the monotony, making one constant sit-through very manageable.

Disc five, while kind of just a seemingly greatest hits snoozefest, deceptively contained some of the best tracks across the set, though again, is sort of wishy-washy.

Overrall, if you have enjoyed Cash to any extent, or are a fan of Americana/Country to any extent, I'd really easily rec this.

it just feels like too much is happening. the autotuned vocals, the sound collage sections, the random rock breakdowns, the lyrics copypasted from wikipedia, there's just too much to take in. i love albums that are all over the place, but it just feels like there's no underlying theme between the sections, no continuous thread that says "oh yeah Ted Hearne made this". plus, too many of them just sound...bad. the autotouned vocals in peticular are just not good. at all.
i imagine this is what Hawaii Pt. ii sounds like to people who don't like it.

I've been on holiday for the past week and don't feel like finishing June. So fuck it, its time for July

>Mercyful Fate - Melissa
>Heavy Metal

Satan worshiping fun, this is the kind of shit that scared good christian parents back in the 80's. The music is heavy and evil, sort of reminiscent of Black Sabbath in a slightly more intense way. The vocals are hella falsetto, they might turn you off if you not use to a King Diamond sounds like a possessed old women. I myself consider it to be part of the charm.

>California Sun - s/t
>psychedelic

If you don't know who the Savage Young Tatterbug is, I recommend to check him out. He's has this possessed blues singer who took waaay to much drugs and taped into the spirit of a america with ancient recording equipment. Its fun, weird, and strangely whimsical.

Its much of the same here with his side project California Sun. But this time with a leaning towards 60's rock. So now its all above but slightly more catchy. I enjoyed this, but with most of this guys projects, I wish it was a bit longer. A rough 18 minutes doesn't seem long enough to get a handle of this experience.

>Mulatu Astatke - Ethiopiques 4
It's a bop, bois. Astatke rivals the western jazz greats while sounding very little like the Miles Davises and John Coltranes of this world. Funky, danceable, while also very chill and basically just dang good. Pretty bad recording quality, though. 3.5+

>Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
I'm gay. 3.5-

>Robert Ashley - Automatic Writing
Lacks the spoken word that made Private Parts such an engaging affair, but alas, this is still good in its own way. French whispering, Ashley moaning incoherently, some unidentified clanking sounds, and a nice organ in the background that juxtaposes the creepiness of everything else on here. Could have been shorter, but the atmosphere building (and a cute concept, seeing how Ashley apparently had trouble speaking coherently because of Tourette's at this point in his life) of it is good enough to warrant a nice score, still. 3.0

>Ambarchi, Jaeger & Rushford - Pale Calling
You know, it's pretty nice ambient musique concrète, nothing you should be surprised by if you're familiar with Ambarchi's material. It's just that to me though: nice background music. Never truly grabs my attention, and it's not like this is the best in its category either, so while I enjoy it, it's unlikely I will listen to it more than a couple of times. 2.5+

>Death In June - Nada!
A confused record by a confused band. Cliché "we're so dark and edgy woo" neofolk on one hand, dark synthpop on the other, and neither succeeds most of the time. The neofolk on here is just mediocre, whereas the synthpop varies in quality, occasionally resulting in Depeche Mode-style bleak bangerz, but oftentimes falling short because the dudes of DI6 don't have the fucking songwriting chops to back their sound up. I didn't find "But What Ends" very interesting due to a lack in variation, but switching between two genres that make little sense together was not the solution to this problem. (a generous) 2.0

I didn't really like the Astral Weeks, it sounded to me like trying to sing soul with generic folk in the background. But there wasn't anything bad with it, there were some moments that sounded pleasant for me, but it wasn't interesting for me.
I like the Krasniy Albom, I like the lo-fi sound of it, the melodies and the vocal.

The Jam Session was great, I think that I need to listen to another Bird's album.

Sachiko M / Toshimaru Nakamura / Otomo Yoshihide – Good Morning Good Night

This album scared the shit out of me. Everytime I'd begin to zone out due to 10 minutes of complete silence, someone would drop a toaster into a meat grinder. The noise on this album is what you'd expect from a bunch of c r a z y nippons, pure and minimal terror. It's a unique album and is definitely original. Listening to this album is a lot like pissing on an electrical fence, you need to try it at least once before you can actually say you've lived.

Google Translate can scan images and tell you the kanji, and sites like jisho.org will give you the correct translation and meaning of the phrase. And if neither of these work, you can hit up a cornucopia thread on /a/ and try asking them, but 99% of the time you get sarcasm and no help

>/daily/ will probably hate it because it's sort of popular but I enjoyed it.
Daily may be full of contrarians/reactionaries/call-it-what-you-will, but like all good contrarians, they display infinitely propagating meta-contrarian behavior. Wherein some contrarian decides to hate something because it's popular and then some clever ass decides to contrarily enjoy that pop music, and then some other ass decides to contrarily sidestep the whole binary deal and like anything and everything.

So where are you in the cycle, oh mighty Fish?

How long does it normally take /daily/ to find their AOTY? It's usually around this time that I manage to come across some amazing record (it's been the pattern since 2013)

I'm a little worried I won't find it though. There's been a lot of great EPs released so far but no full length album I've actually fallen I'm love with. I'll keep looking.

trial's over. Took three days of my life and missed two days of work for it. Was painful to sit through because it was just some kindergarten shit. Jury was me and 5 other women. Once we presided they all for some reason thought I should be the foreperson, or the guy that reads the verdict and gets everyone to agree. Everyone was saying "not guilty" but this one bitch who kept trying to say he was guilty of ANOTHER crime he didn't even commit. Took another half hour of us explaining it to her to get her to agree, which I swear to god I broke a blood vessel doing.

They're gonna mail me $90 dollars for wasting 3+ days of my life, though, so I guess in the end it was AAAAAAAAAAALL worth it!!!!! xD

She's extremely paranoid and I think she suspects I have drugs or something, which I don't.

Just the other day I came downstairs where all my stuff is pretty early in the day and stuff was all over the ground, a few containers I had were opened, near a whole shelf of records were on the ground, some with the records out of the sleeve (most of them undamaged, though). She claimed she was cleaning, but she didn't have any cleaning product, and I don't see why she would need to open containers/CDs/records to clean my desk area.

I don't mean to be self-entitled and all, but I wish I just had some privacy ig.

Evening, /boys/.

>Sweet Trip - Velocity : Design : Comfort

Interesting. The idea is cool, but I think it was poorly executed. The glitchiness doesn't feel like anything more than a bit of flavoring to most of the tracks. And I think this is waaaaay too long. It does not try enough new ideas to really warrant how long it is - it could be cut down to the length of a single LP and I think it would be much better for it.

Still, this has a lot of potential, and when it works, it really works. There's a few cool songs here that actually work the glitch pop/IDM/shoegaze fusion to their benefit.

>The Pop Group - We Are Time
>Post-punk, Noise rock, Dub

I was looking forward to this compilation of takes from throughout The Pop Group's prime, and I was disappointed. This is far too much more like For How Much Longer than Y - meaning instead of cool, heavily produced creepiness, this is mostly barebones dubby noise rock freakouts that don't really have much going for them. The production on most tracks here is even worse than that of For How Much Longer, which is quite a feat, and it does not work in this albums favor.

The few Y-ish tracks here are real treats, though. We Are Time's take on Colour Blind, for example, is excellent and is easily one of The Pop Group's finest. The takes on Amnesty Report, Sense of Purpose, and the titular We Are Time are also pretty great, but otherwise, I wouldn't really recommend this unless you were a big fan of For How Much Longer.
>>
>>66114098
I guess she might be suspicious since I've been spending a lot more time with friends recently, but that's only because I'm moving across the country for college and won't be able to see them for a very long time after this summer.

Plus, one of my best friends who's Mormon is going on his two year mission next month. Dude's not even gonna be allowed to contact the outside world other than email. I'm really sad because I can't really imagine life without that guy, but at the same time I can't imagine what it's gonna be like for him.

>>66114156
I know. I've tried to reason with her, but she always shoots me these nasty hateful looks whenever I try to explain it to her, like I'm talking down to here or something, which I'm very much trying to avoid.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm digging for sympathy or anything, but shit really just makes me uncomfortable.

>>66114188
The more I listen to VDC, the more I agree with pretty much what you said. There's a LOT that works very well in here, though cutting just a couple minutes out of a few tracks would've helped out immensely. It's more punchy than atmospheric, and should've given up on trying to be the latter.
>>
>>66114383

The Residents - Not Available (1978)
>experimental, experimental rock

Another example that The Residents are at their best when they're telling stories with their music. This reminds me a lot of a warmer and less oppressive companion to Eskimo, which is one of my favorite Residents releases. Lots of weird synthy instrumentation and evil, EVIL chanting. The chanting is the best part here, it just sounds so damned sinister and ominous, and it does pair with with the very minimal and sparse (yet still complex, somehow) instrumentation very well. Suffers a lot when it gets more goofy (this is why Fingerprince is my favorite Residents release, it's not goofy. so don't ask why I'm a fucking cardiacs/ween/zappa fan), but at it's more serious moments this definitely stands tall with the other standouts of their discog. What a great band/collective/thing.

3.0+

Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death (2004)
>modern classical, minimalism

A very short and very pointless collection of pretty little piano pieces. Kinda like Lubomyr Melnyk except much less interesting. Just very bland and so-so stuff. But /fuck/, it does get super pretty at times. Occasionally pretty, but just very substanceless and boring.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River (1969)
>swamp rock

California boys playing the most legit, down and dirty blues rock I've ever heard in my life. Almost reminds me of the Stones in the complete disparity between the location of the artist and the sound of their music, but unlike the Stones they actually sound totally legit, and they're much better songwriters as well, this album is catchy as hell. There's also another big disparity here, and that is the one between the quality of the a and b-sides. The a-side is just a wonderful collection of bluesy, swampy romps with some kickass guitar work and wonderful vocals, but the b-side takes a much more uninspired, poppy turn. "Bad Moon Rising" is just played out, and the other 3 songs on this side besides "Lodi" just don't do anything with me. But still, you can't beat that a-side when it comes to this style of music.

This album holds a lot of meaning for me personally, even if looking back it isn't all that amazing. As a kid I always used to be a lot younger than the other kids in school and as such I was always a social outcast.
Then, when I was 14-ish(?) we moved to the other side of the country and I somehow instantly made a lot of friends there and started playing in my first band. This record reminds me of long summers spent underage drinking with my sleezy high school friends, jamming out to mediocre buttindie. Fun times.

ultimately I couldn't decide between these two things
it's a very very close heat this one

Whitehouse - Bird Seed
The first album to legitimately unsettle me, as in recoiling in existential disgust unsettled, not mildly sad, probably going to get over it unsettled, it's due to one track in particular, Philosophy. Too real for words that one, accusing the listener of just being a pathetic reprobate, it's a place of very troubling thoughts I would rather not return to. I will say that the textures on that track are amazing, there's a lot going on in those earsplitting drones... It's really edgy though, like really really edgy
The interview collage was ok, if a little tasteless, don't really see the appeal there but the different narratives of sexual abuse are compelling enough in this kind of helpless, perverse way to keep listening.
It was good but I won't ever re-visit it
Brainbombs still shit though

Lil Ugly Mane - Uneven Compromise
Surprising amount of diversity and texture at play here, despite it essentially being a trap-rap bang-ger
gamelan was unexpected, there's something in that, I wan't more Gamelan rap, shit's cash
some of the samples outstay their welcome and the harsh noise outro was a bit unnecessary

gibe a single each, make it happy, need a pickmeup after Bird Seed

Tourney progression!

Torts, Transgod, Terminus and Ruggles can give me a new rec.

Short thoughts:

>Petit Moussa - s/t
This is way too lo-fi. Even if there was something good about it, I wouldn't be able to hear it.

>King Tears Bat Trip
The thing that's nicest about jazz is the interplay, but this is just a wall of sound made by jazz instruments.

>Songs of Innocence...
Loads happening on this, huge undertaking. Some parts are better than others, but it's very well written as a whole.

>The Residents - The Ughs
knowing when to quit is very important. for The Residents, that should've been about 13 years ago. the problem is that now that they can play their instruments they know what they can do and that's all they bother to do. Back then, they had great ideas, but no idea how to execute them, so they had to experiment and express those ideas with those rudimentary chops. trust me, if they made meet the residents, or third reich n roll, or not available right now, they'd sound like some throwaway rock albums.

oh yeah, as for the music, its just some uninteresting mix of the same ambient / world / industrial type of music they've been shitting out this past decade.

[inb4 >they are already throwaway rock albums]

>>
Chrome - Alien Soundtracks
this kinda bad
it has bad production but not in an appealing way, as in, that was all they could afford, and fair enough but the songwriting here is weak as shit
poor riffage and grooves so weak not even the most die hard longhaired yahoo could vibe to them, it feels really confused and amateurish, they should have spent more time on these songs instead of releasing a bunch of undercooked shite

Also I changed my opinion, be happy
Alien Lanes next then what?
