the closest I played was an ibanez SR506, it had a flat part in the middle of the back of the neck, and it was one of the comfiest necks I've played despite being a 6 string bass.
Unfortunately I haven't found any production guitar that doesn't have that thing as well aside from strandbergs, and they're way out of my budget.
Ibanez necks are still really comfortable though, so I don't mind that.

Whats a good color for a Kramer 5150 project? I don't want to do an EVH paintjob but I want a nice hot rod look.

Thinking about going for a nice blue but I'm inclined towards warmer colors (red, orange, yellow) because dirty old maple fretboards don't look great with cooler colors.

So I've decided that when I grow up (only 35 now) I want to play blues bass. Is a bass and one of these 'headphone amplifiers' all I need to get started on my road to suckage?

Given that there is about an 85% chance that by next week I'll have changed my mind and decided to instead devote my life to pottery, I'd like to keep the costs down a bit at first. When looking at a cheaper used bass (probably end up getting something from Music-Go-Round down the street), anything that should be on a 'no-go' list?

I agree, but they're about 300 dollars off each, I can deal with a little extra abalone.
>>
>>66034166
i got the solo and im very happy with it. the preamps are very good for the price, it has direct monitoring, headphone jack and if you want you can use it for a studio mic aswell. the problem is that a lot of guitar's pickups are too hot for the inst jack and using the line will fuck up your signal, even turning down the volume knob on the guitar is no good idea as that will cut treble too. you could get a di box to get a line level signal, but the problem is that a cheap one might have a slight effect on your sound. you could also go for the 2i4 which has a pad button as a work around to the problem of clipping guitars.

I got a guitar with some Bareknuckle Nailbombs in it. Alnico V kind. Over time, I've realized that any time I really push an amp with it, it starts sounding really gross in the upper mids and treble range. I've read that this is a common complaint because of the 90s voicing and is a take-it-or-leave it thing with the Alnico V model.

Thing is, the guitar these are in is a baritone I want to use for a metal project, so I'm thinking of replacements. Is there a similarly voiced pickup out there that would be a little less nasal honks and chainsaws in the high end?

I'm not probably going with BKP again- these were on sale when I got them, and I'd rather go Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan if possible. So I'm thinking D-Activators or Nazguls, but there's so much marketing slush out there that it's hard to find any real opinions. And every audio demo is hella overprocessed.

Why not just swap out the magnets? Magnets are cheap and Alnico 8s are really popular for the tonal alteration you're talking about (it's a very popular mode for SD JBs).
>>
>>66036023
...doesn't matter
>>
>>66036216
Don't I need LESS alnico, not MORE of it? 8 seems like way too much.
>>
>>66036343

That's not how it works. The numbering doesn't refer to how much "alnico" there is, and alnico isn't some quantity that adds upper mids and high end. Alnico is just the composition of the magnet, which is an iron alloy with ALuminum, NIckel and CObalt.

The number just refers to the specific composition of the alloy, which existed before they were used in guitar pickups.

Alnico 8 is used to even out a tone, tightening up the low end while taming the high end and pushing more output. For a metal project they're an ideal magnet.

Can you describe the problem with the highs a little better? What exactly sounds bad if you're able to describe it?

My immediate thought is swap magnets or sell them and grab a ceramic Nailbomb or a Holy Diver.

>but there's so much marketing slush out there that it's hard to find any real opinions. And every audio demo is hella overprocessed.
Try and get your hands on some DIs. Then you can send them out to your own amplifier and get a much better idea.

BKP used to (may still) offer DIs if you asked. Nolly used to post them a lot for that exact reason.
>>
>>66036216
I had considered a magnet swap but considering the BKPs have a warranty and strangely-good resale value, I'd rather leave them intact. I've also heard that the BKPs are slightly harder to do a magnet swap on because the bars are sized different than standard.

I've resold intact pickups before, I think I'd have a harder time with a visibly modified one, particular for shit metal hipsters like such as these.

>>66036023
Used Ibanez RG something or other. Pretty sure it's mahogany. Previous owner did a lot to it, the electronics cavity is all fucked up and the trem is stopped and it has EMG routes that were sloppily gouged with a dremel to make room for passives and rings. Plays nice enough though.
>>
>>66037581
You can reverse the mod. It won't be visible and it's not even worth mentioning if you resell, nothing will change.
>>

To be honest, the only "real" Fender is actually G&L

Leo Fender sold Fender to the corporate giants to do whatever they wanted with the company, then created G&L to make guitars how he meant them to be created.
If anything G&L is the real Fender and what Fender has become isn't anything close

So i understand how minor/major chords within a scale work but is there any rules for playing diatonic chords? So the iii chord is always minor but are there rules for what alterations you can make to that chord and still be in key?
>>
>>66038594
It's simple, if you build the major third which would be I in the key of C major, you take the root, third and fifth of this note, in the key of C (so C-E-G)
Say you want to add an extension, like the sixth, then it's the same, you also stick to the key of C major, in which case the sixth to C is A, giving it a major sixth on top of your major chord.
Let's take another exemple, you want to add the seventh to ii in the key of C, so you stack your root, third and fifth, DFA, and add on top the seventh to D, still in the key of C, which is C.
Also yes I took the C major scale because it's the easiest to remember and it's 4AM here
>>
>>66038594
Just use the notes in the scale you're in.

i.e. you're in the key of C major. you can alter the chords by playing notes a third above each of the chords in the key. so with C major you have C E and G. if you add a third above that you get a B, which makes a Cmaj7. if you add a third above that you get a D which makes a Cmaj9. another third and you get a maj11, etc. these are jazzier sounding chords but the principal stays true throughout the key, just with different types of chords.

if you take the G, which is the dominant. and start adding thirds to it, you get a G7, then a G9, etc. same with the minor chords.

you CAN go out of key, but that gets into borrowing chords and it's a bit more advanced, i'd tackle diatonic stuff first

realized >>66038857 essentially said what i was just about to post

>Can you describe the problem with the highs a little better? What exactly sounds bad if you're able to describe it?
Between 600Hz on upwards to around 2kHz (and nowhere above there- this isn't above 2k at all) there are a few... "lumps", for lack of a better word, in the frequency spectrum for low notes. The bottom strings of any downtuned CRUSHING METAL RIFF sound like they're not sure where to go- and if I get them under control at all with an EQ, it starts whistling because there's too many sharp cuts.

If this whole thing about ceramic being "tighter" than alnico is true, and the magnet swap is reversible, then I'll probably just try to magnet swap the bridge. Cheers.

Rendering shit right now to tomorrow edit the demo I recorded with my partner. Will be released Friday. I might post the link here if anybody asks for it.

Ironically, the first partnered pedal demo I did with him was for the Warped Vinyl MkII. 50+ demos later, this is my last demo ever with him, and it's for the Tonal Recall.

Regarding the pedal, it's a beast and one of my favorites atm, but I'm definitely glad it isn't my only delay. What it does best is certainly a bit too specific and doesn't play well with certain guitars.

>>66040617
sombody who really knows whats up might be able to give you a better explanation but the way i understand it is basicly making a relatively weak analog signal louder is just not that easy. there are different ways to do it(tube, solid state) and which electrical components you use influences the outcome by a lot. its not a digital process where you just take something and make it louder, its electronics so theres tons of variables. ok heres a good analogy i think, if you'd start with the number 100 which represents the sound you put in and multiply it by 10 because you want it 10 times louder, digitally you'd get 1000 of course, but since its en electrical process some part might add 5, then the number gets doubled, 10 is retracted and then the number is multiplied by 5. that number is rougly 1000, but not quite. in the same way some electrical component might add certain frequencies or characteristics to the signal. and since all amplifiers are build differend they all sound different. at least to an extend.
>>
>>66041197

I worked as a tech for a few years. I always hated this meme that MIM's were "just as good."

The Micro Tilt and 2-Screw trem make a big difference. The delta no-load or greasebucket from factory are pretty nice, too. None-shitty paint jobs are a big deal to a lot of folks as well.

Generally, you can get most of that on a Tribute G&L. I'm not saying that the MIA Strat is worth the full price, I'm just saying the gap isn't as small as some people would like to make it.

Thanks, bro. I just drop by about twice and thrice a month. Considering how the threads are going nowadays, usually just to see how many people I can get to be triggered by my setup.

I'm doing fine, by the way, thanks for asking. The Tonal Recall is my last pedal demo with Victor Hugo Targino, though. Partnership just didn't work out and I bailed. I'll be starting my own channel soon enough.

How are things with you?

>>66041091
At first when I got the Vanguard I thought it was the best thing in the universe. But now the honeymoon phase (ha!) has already worn off and I have a more realistic vision of it.

First of all, it's a great pedal. It wouldn't be on my board if it wasn't. That being said, I don't think this is the kind of phaser for people who like traditional phasers. It's more for people who like ambience, noise and experimental music imo. This pedal gets crazy really, really fast.

The first main thing to keep in mind is that it's huge. To give up that much pedalboard real state for a phaser is certainly a difficult decision. Regarding the actual pedal, I never find myself wanting to play traditional phaser stuff such as EVH tones. It's just too crazy to be wasted on that.

I love it, though. The only other phaser I'd consider replacing it with is the CBA Wombtone, and mostly due to size.
>>

>>66041095
Now I think you're asking the right questions. Turns out that amplifying a signal can result in drastically different sounds and that's why there are so many different amps out there.

Always go for specific questions like that. To buy an amp, first have in mind your budget, what style you play most and what kind of tones you like (if you don't know, then what kind of bands/artists do you like the sound of).

With that in mind it's much easier to narrow down possible choices. Only time and experience will allow you to think of a specific sound/artist and relate that to a specific amp. To help you know with more objective suggestions and models I'd need to know more from you about the things I mentioned.
>>
>>66041343

The microtilt is pretty simple, it just lets you adjust the angle of the neck in relation to the body, so you can shim the guitar pretty precisely without ever taking the neck off. Super convenient.

Two screw trem is just a different way of mounting it, but it's ultimately better than the traditional 6-screw. Almost every strat-style bridge maker these days uses 2 screw.

Greasebucket is just a wiring mod that bleeds unwanted treble, Delta no-load allows you to contour your EQ better. More components, different wiring.

All in one it's a better Strat that you can get in cherry burst as opposed to boring ass black with a white pickguard. Still should be $999 and the Am Special should be $799. Oh well, Fender doesn't seem to need help selling guitars. They sold themselves when I was working guitar shops.

>>
>>66041434
these things seem cool, but are they really things that a beginner-intermediate guitarist needs (i might argue that an advanced one might not need them)?

american fenders steadily go for $400 more than mim ones, it's strange to think these are the only differences (barring slightly better hardware and assembly)

when would i ever need to adjust the angle of the neck? i read on a bunch of forums that a bunch of people prefer 6 screw
>>
>>66041464

>these things seem cool, but are they really things that a beginner-intermediate guitarist needs (i might argue that an advanced one might not need them)?

If you set up your own guitars (and it's highly recommended everyone learn) they're super convenient. 2-Screws generally stay in tune better.

> it's strange to think these are the only differences

Better pickups, tuners, wood grains and resale.

>when would i ever need to adjust the angle of the neck?

After it spends hours in your trunk between midwestern shows. After you drop it real hard. After you don't play it a while. After you move to a different humidity climate. Etc.

Dawg, in the world of musical instruments it's really not expensive. High-school intermediate saxophones are easily $3,000. First year music students at college are dropping $4,000 on flutes.

You don't NEED to spend $1,300 on a guitar. Most people don't NEED anything more than a 2004 Honda Civic.

But it's a hobby. It'd be a boring past-time if everything was done and judged based on pure utility.

Also, those are a lot of features.
>>
>>66040607
Never used Stringjoy, but custom strings are the best. Only downside is not being able to go into store and buy them.
>>
>>66041611
That's a good budget for an amp but go easy on the whole career and dream thing. Chances are that a lot of your preferences will change in the following years, especially if you're still in your early 20's or younger.

Anyway, for that budget and a decent gig amp for punk/hardcore, the EVH 5150III or the Peavey 6505 are good choices. They're only heads (heads = just the amplifier, no speaker included, in which case it would be called a combo) so you still need a cabinet with a speaker.

A 2x12 (a cabinet with two 12" speakers) is also a great choice and you can easily find one with Celestion V30s (good speakers for these amps) used for around $200.

>>66041754
idk i thought we were on the same page. i'm not saying that american strats don't have clear advantages, that would be stupid. i'm saying that like 70% of the people in these threads are college students looking to get in a band or gig, and that recommending they get a $800 used guitar when they still need a good amp is dumb.

if they're coming on here for advice they probably don't care about the minute differences between a mim and an american strat. a mim strat is a fantastic guitar that can gig extremely well. i would rather spend my money on a good ass amp.

a $300 used mim strat+a $700 deluxe reverb>>>>>>>a $700 used american strat+a $300 amp

>>66038594
if you want to stay in key, just try and add notes from the scale to the base chord and see how it sounds. Nothing will sound TOO off as long as you only use notes in the scale so just experiment around the fretboard. Also good way to learn the notes.

Also, to add what to the other guys mentioned, you can try looking into sus2/sus4 chords. Basically you move the 3rd of the chord (Eg: Dmaj chord = D-F#-A, 3rd is F#) and change it to scale note below (sus2) or scale note above (sus4). So Dsus2 = D E G, Dsus4 = D G A.

Since you're changing the note that makes the chord major/minor, it can be used in interesting chord progressions and be used in more keys than it would normally be in. Sus chords are some of my favorite, really beautiful sounds.

i've played the yamaha before. it's meh, but it looks like shit to me. same for the ibanez though i haven't tried one.
squier CV jazz bass was great when i tried one a couple years ago, the squier logo triggers my autism a little but the quality was impressive for a squier. hands down best squier bass i've played.
the ESP looks nice (i love P/J fender style basses), the headstock triggers my autism as well but i feel like this one might be a grower; the main problem with this one for me is the relic job. i guess a good relic of a Fender or other old brand could go unnoticed but the fact that the bass is clearly not vintage makes it obvious, and that's pretty lame imo.

tl;dr
I'm biased but I'd go Squier, or the ESP if you can live with the fact that some factory worker beat it up for it to look cooler to a bunch of posers. My advice, if the sellers live nearby, go check both out (or any of the other 2 if you like them).

Americana Musical Supply's website will let you do monthly payments on gear if your credit is good. You need a valid SS# too.

You dont need to sign up for their card. They credit your own card.

Its absolutely shit

I feel obligated to point out that it's not smart to get an american fender if you're concerned about money. Just get something affordable and get the frets fixed up and new pickups.
>>
>>66043794
I hope this is true
If so this might help me in the future when I need to get a loan from my bank and I get a guitar out of it
>>
>>66043738
It's pretty simple stuff really. Guitar cabinets are extremely directional. Angled cabs aim at your head as well as forward. I like using straight full stacks but angled are nice too.

>tfw plebs will never understand
Anyway, glad to hear you're doing better and are going back to gigging, man. Wish you the best of luck.

There won't be a video post about my own channel as I believe Victor Hugo would never go for that. I like him and we're still friends but I don't think he'd ever do it and I wouldn't ask. He's made very clear in the past that it's his channel and it's to be used primarily as publicity and material for his own career as a producer, one of the reasons I have decided to leave and start my own. There wasn't anything in there for me anymore.

I don't have a name for the channel yet (I'm going the KNOBS route and won't be showing my face nor my name, I don't really want recognition, I just want to make gear videos and build a portfolio) but as soon as it's ready I'll post a link here just to hear the shitstorm of insults.

Now THAT'S an abomination.

It cost me around $15 to build that.

I thought Brazil's economy was fucked but man, you should definitely set up one of those gofundme campaigns if that's expensive for you. I think I have some change around somewhere you could have.

I hope you're killed on the street very soon.

First you have to understand why they made the mustang.
Cheap and we're designed for small practice guitars
Kurt cobain made them famous because they were cheap and he smashed them at concerts

Sound wise they are mediocre
Also now they are overpriced

I'll most likely be running two 5150s in stereo at the gig for laughs. Need that wall of noise to make the tone work.

I was going to use a pair of JCM2000s (mod another one up to match mine) but I've found the 6505s thick low end works a bit better for this style.

The promoter gave the go ahead to blow through the noise limits since my set is fairly short and our odds of getting shut down are fairly low.

It's a mix of that last clip and stuff like this. Skip midway for some tremolo picking, it comes out in a really cool way with the type of delay I use.
