It's summer, and you're posting on 4chan? God, you're pathetic.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, continue Jangle's Thrift Tourney (it's a pipe dream), just let the good times flow.

/daily/, what are the record stores in your area like?

there are two that I go to regularly near me. the first one (the sound garden, pic related) has all the new stuff and a decent used selection. their record selection isn't as big as i'd like it to be (it's gotten much larger since the vinyl "boom", though), and most of the selection is pretty surface level stuff, but it's a really good store. they also have really good jazz selections, new (i don't think I've ever seen a new jazz record over $15 bucks, they sell em cheap) and used, and a good DVD selection.

the other one has a completely used selection, and it's called Books & Melodies (it's a book store too, duh). it's a much better book store than it is a record store, but it's still a pretty great used record store, at least for jazz. also for dadrock, springsteen specifically. which i guess is nice because I like springsteen. the owners are nice and there's also a qt cat that roams around :3

there's also another one further away from me that's owned by one guy that has a pretty lousy selection but the guy's really personable and nice and i would've felt really bad if i didn't buy anything so i bought something. definitely the worst one near me.

so, what are your local selections?

there are three in town, one of which being the music aisle of the big store with its overpriced everything. meaning you can get your Music on Vinyl reissue of any Foo Fighters album and buy a pair of Beats headphones for the modest sum of way too fucking much, and live the full pleb experience.
Second one is, pains me to present it that way but really that's accurate, p4k : the store. Any trendy and vaguely indie stuff ends up tehre, as well as some crates of second hand records and some second hand comic books as well. sadly there isn't that much you can't find anywhere else here. Might be nice for someone who likes 80s and contemporary rock more than I do.
Third one is great. they guy running it is a forer DJ and only sells what he wants to sell because he finds it good. Meaning there is shittons of latin music (which I really don't care about but goddamn that guy lived and breathed lating jazz), loads of cool bleeps and a fair amount of stuff vaguely thrown into the various "experimental/weird" crates.

two i've been to: Record Theatre, been around since the 70s or 80s, apparently my uncle used to be one of the higher-higher ups there. nowadays it sucks, the college kids who work there are condescending assholes and everything's really expensive. two locations, the original one is bigger and has a back room full of used stuff, then a smaller one closer to the college that I actually prefer, saw some really awesome stuff there that I wish I had gotten
then Black Dots, a little punk "boutique", they get some really cool and rare used stuff from time to time, haven't been there much and went I did go i was totally broke, mean to go back there before they close down which I'm sure will happen sooner than later
oh yeah and also Vinyl Revival Records just opened up in Batavia, all used stuff, mostly junk but some cool stuff (a lot of Bowie, Eno and Prince specifically) that I hope is still there

They sell reissues for 15 bucks?? wow that's hella cheap.

I have two places near me

Record and Tape Exchange is my go-to place. It's a small store and they have like 0 new vinyl and everything but the new arrivals bin is mostly trash, but the people who work there are super nice and it's pretty damn cheap so I don't mind. Very good for finding old folk, blues and jazz, picked up a Mississippi John Hurt record and a Ali Ackbar Khan box set from there today.
They also know their shit abut records, they fix players, make their own cleaning formula, all that stuff.

Second is CD Cellar, which is a bit further out but it's pretty huge. First floor is all records, basement is all CD's (hence the name). More often than not they have at least 2 or 3 things that make me cream my pants, and then I look at the price and I start to cry.
Not to say their prices are terrible, just not very competitive. The staff is very cold and dull though, and they don't have a listening station :(

And when I'm in college I go to my friend's pop up shop because even though it's tiny and only sells new vinyl, he has hook ups with Numero Group, Light in the Attic, Sublime Frequencies, all this shit. And he sells all these god-tier reissues for like 2-3 bucks above wholesale price (not to mention I usually get a discount ;^))

there's quite a lot of small, independent record stores in copenhagen right now.
i work at one of them, which is also where i used to go the most before i started working there. We almost only sell used vinyl, except for new Danish underground releases, and a bunch of free jazz reissues. Our selection varies quite a lot depending on what we get our hands on, but we have like a general rock section, punk, metal, noise/power electronics, jazz, """"world"""", modern classical and techno sections.
We also often have releases parties and concerts from local bands, and readings from local writers.
nice little place

i only have 3 options in this entire island:
first one's specs, they only sell new stuff and pretty expensive

there's electroshock, which is just entirely made up of used vinyl records that get donated, and local band stuff.

finally, my other option is this monthly reunion that's done about an hour away from me, where collectors come to buy and sell inventory. most of it is just collectors trying to get rid of the garbage they have, but you can usually find some cool stuff in there sometimes, as well as other collectors that sell mint/new copies of stuff. they also have local bands performing during that time, as well as other local bands selling their stuff, which is where i discovered my favorite local band, campo-formio [i played them in plug once dunno if anyone remembers]

>The Residents - The Warner Bros Album

Well that was fucking terrifying.
When this group of weirdos was still in the very beginning, without even a band name, they mailed this tape to Hal Halverstadt of Warner Bros. Records. He didn't like it that much, and the tape was returned to "Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco". In that moment, the Residents were officially born, as the Residents, Uninc.

This bootleg is madness.
To be fair, it feels like it's weird for the sake of being weird (and that probably was the intention) but it's so full of interesting moments, I can't blame it. A lot of free improvisation is mixed with a little bit of psychedelic rock, blues rock, folk rock and just plain fucking around.
There are so many things going on, abrupt ends, various reprises, lots of noise, and and even more instruments.
Every idea, because I can't really refer to these as "songs" is interesting in its own way, from the crazy blues of "Going To Arcadia Blues", to the terrifying contrast of the sweet final part of "Concerto in R Flat Minor" and the pure chaos of "Gagagapiggaeioupe", to the disgustingly hilarious "Every Day I Masturbate on Merican Fag".

39 minutes for 39 (?) songs, this bootleg is crazy, psychedelic, humorous, varied and creative (in the wrong way).
It's a very interesting experience, doesn't matter if you are or not a Resident fan.

T Power - The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind (1995)
>atmospheric drum and bass, jungle

A very, very awkward mixture of more ambient, atmospheric D'n'B styles and more hardhitting, hardcore jungle styles. Both styles are done well, even if the more atmospheric parts aren't really gripping and a bit generic, but the combination between the two is pulled of very haphazardly. It's like a weird amalgation of an Amon Tobin record and a DJ Jeffee mix, it's just pulled off very awkwardly. The separate parts of the record make a very awkward whole.

Bonobo - Animal Magic (2000)
>downtempo

Pleasant but unmemorable downtempo album, filled with lots of chill beats but nothing to really latch onto. I have to say I don't care for the more nu jazzier moments all too much, but the standard downtempo is done very well, even if it's just not all too memorable. Solid album, but I'd only listen to it if my only goal was to chill out.

2.5+

Misophone - Where Has It Gone, All the Beautiful Music of Our Grandparents? It Died With Them, That's Where It Went... (2007)
>chamber folk, psychedelic folk, indie pop

I really, really hate long album titles like this, but that has nothing to do with the music, so whatever. This album starts of really nicely, like a lost, cozier addition to the Elephant 6 roster, just very chill and pasoral poppy folk music. This sound keeps up for a couple more tracks, but it just completely loses all focus by the end. It's got a few cool flouncy circus music moments, but I can very safely say that the more psychedelic aspects of this album aren't very good at all. I can see what the artist is getting at, but it's just so disjointed and haphazard that I can't get into it. The more straightforward moments are pretty great, however.

A rewarding experiment in subverted harsh noise, forced into a minimalism framework. That is, harsh noise subjugated to reverb and repetition until it is no longer harsh. The 'tactile' texture has changed, but the original is still audible. (That probably doesn't make any sense, but if you heard it, you'd likely agree.) The result is hellish, but fascinating--often somewhere between extremely minimal techno and a live ambient sound exhibit.

Yet, despite the computerized industrial terror of the end product--the glitchy bleeps bloops whirrs and thundering crashes--the process feels very organic. Loops effortlessly fade into one another, and the dadaistic industrial sound effects duck and swirl about binaurally. It's very likely that turntablism (maybe even a techno tower?) was involved in these sounds' creation.

The tracks are unfortunately somewhat lengthy. So even as each is based on an interesting new approach to the base theme, each approaches tedium as track lengths approach 15-20 minutes (the first and longest is 21).
>8/10

>The Second Half ("Myon-Neutrino", "Z-Boson", "Higgs Mechanism")
A disappointing experiment in the same lengthy composition style applied to very cheesy synth lines, with far less progression across each track. Smoother and more glitchy than industrial. The tracks are half as long as those on the former half of the album, yet half as interesting.
>4/10

An experiment in talking out my ass, this review, much like the record, started off so well, and took to a sharp right to disappointmentville so suddenly.

And here's the last

>Eagles - Hotel California
I always appreciated the songwriting on the titular song (momentary Mercedes Benz shilling aside), even as the supporting instrumentation had that kind of questionable faux-exotica vibe. I'm also usually not one for standard 70s rock guitar solos, but I think the lengthy guitar pyrotechnics that occupy an entire three minutes on "Hotel California" actually serves the song and story decently well.

The rest, though, leaves a lot to be desired. Soft rock doesn't get much softer than "New Kid in Town" and few songs are as sleazy as "Life in the Fast Lane." The rest are mostly lame ballads. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it, but I figured I ought to hear any album that sold 32 million copies.
>3/10

>Eluvium - Lambent Material
Really emotionally-charged ambient and drone. This album definitely hits all the right notes and chords (hence the emotional value, right?) in ways I can't quite describe. So I won't try, out of both respect for the reader, disrespect for what I could stretch to call my talent, and general laziness. I will say though, the longest track is easily the best track.

Whoever it is here who's always whoring this album out, thanks for the secondhand rec.

Paul Simon - Graceland (1986)
>pop rock, singer/songwriter

I do admire Paul Simon, half because I like Simon & Garfunkel and half because I do kinda like his solo stuff outside of this album, but this is just horrendous. Gaudy, overproduced, way too slick for it's own good "worldbeat" bullshit. The straight up pop songs are just bland, I don't care for Simon's voice when he's not harmonizing with Garfunkel and the melodies are just not there. And the production is just so cheesy and slick, it's like a synthpop record that's too scared to just fully embrace synthy, cheesy, awesomeness. And these african music influences are just dreadful, they have no real purpose in the actual songs themselves, they're just there for the sole purpose of adding a sense of culture to the record. Not a fan, at all. "You Can Call Me Al" is pretty okay though, mainly because that embraces synthpop the most and doesn't try to hide it.

0.5

And here's the pretty big pretty picture

The Eagles coming through with that sweet rym curve padding (oh what little I could find).

Speaking of ratings, adjusted some today. Dino Jr. is now 9 because it's just that good. Minutemen's 'Howl' is bumped to an 8 because it's just that good. And I relistened to Syro but got pretty bored, so that drops to a 6.

>>66013540
>(there's a reason why my real name is coltrane)

Also, I agree with basically everything you said in that review. Graceland is overrated as fuck, and the """African-ness""" of the record is indeed about as forced as those quotation marks just made it sound.

0.5 in natqam's system is just meh to bad, not rock bottom
>>
>>66014415
i've always realized the irony in that, especially because i prefer Coltrane as an artist about 100x more than Nat King Cole, but i just think natkingcole is a better handle than johncoltrane, or something. and i've been using it for 2 years so it's a bit too late to change it now.

>>66014428
to me, a 0.5 is just something that i really don't care for and that i wouldn't seek out an opportunity to listen to again. i don't consider my 0.5s to be just the most rock-bottom, godawful music I've ever listened to, just stuff that I really don't care for.

a 4.0 to me either has to have a lot of emotional connection or completely captivate me and blow me away on the first few listens. so, i give out 4.0s and above very rarely.
>>

aye that was probably me

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Did you start there? It's pretty much just downhill from there, but if you want similar stuff, just go backwards from the end of their discog.

Also, welcome to /daily/! You should make a trip. It's fun! :D

haino's To Start With was interesting, but not compelling, and the record was longer than it needed to be. some really nice instrumentation, but I didnt care so much for the arrangements. a fine record, really, but not my speed. landed in the middle of the road.

hanatarash 2 was one of the best noise records i've heard. a lot of manic shrieking and choppy audio a la sissy spacek, but the actual noise sounds like one of the early modest mouse cassettes- that is, squealing, warped, and really thick.
it ends curiously with a section of what sounds like a late 1800s quality recording of hillbillies inventing grindcore, and then goes into some WAN TOO TREE FOAH gerogerigegege territory. then someone presumably throws a drumset and some dishes down a really big stairset.
extremely recommended.

REVIEWS (finally)

The Spoils of War - II
While the first comp felt like it was a fully recorded album that just happened to never see the light of day, this second addition definitely feels like stuff that perhaps was never meant to see the light of day.
Aside from a select few professionally mixed tracks, most of the songs are just demos or lo-fi live versions. On top of that, this compilation feels like a collection of b-sides and unfinished songs. The songwriting takes a notable step down from the first release, there aren't any beautifully serene 'Now is Made in America' moments. The style is all over the place, jazzy at points, very drone-y and experimental at others, and intermittently just a regular jam band. There are seeds of ideas here and there, but none of them are really expounded upon or feel like they were ever properly completed.

~

[RECORD STORE BONUS]

VA - The Folk Song Tradition

Tradition Records compilation from the early 60's featuring Alan Lomax and Odetta among others.
A side is mostly comprised of old English folk tunes while the B side is entirely American folk music.
not much to say other than it's a decent little sampler of some of the best that Tradition had in its catalog back in the day.

*

The National Raga Company of India - Classical Ragas of India

I was hoping for a little more with this one honestly.
It's (mostly) a bunch of short flute-vocal-tabla ragas. Enjoyable, but not my preferred style of raga.
The B-side is one long Raga with sitar joining the mix.
Not much to say on this other than it's a decent introduction to Hindustani classical, don't expect any mind blowing performances or anything that out of the ordinary though.

Cliff Waldron - God Walks the Dark Hills

MAN what a fucking let down.
The cover (not on rym) looked amazing. Looked like some blue, depressing, gospel worship stuff.
But what I got instead was shitty-ass super religious and upbeat bluegrass.
I like bluegrass, don't get me wrong. But this shit was lacking any passion, any rawness, any of the emotion that good bluegrass should draw. Just a group of whiteys singing boring worship and twanging their banjos.
Couldn't even finish this crap.

x

Sweet Emma Barrett - And Her Preservation Hall Jazz Band (1964)

My main problem with most dixieland is that the recording technology was not ready for the music.
This album eliminates that problem, taking a tight, groovy jass band out of time and sticking them on a proper recording.
And hell, is this a fun record. Makes me want to get up and dance honestly. The band is locked in, they play off each other so well. Drums on this are ferocious. It's a shame that often drums weren't even featured on early dixieland recordings due to limitations, cause they really give this album that extra oomph that knocks it into excellence.

hybrid noisebloom
it has really amazing textures
and has a totally unjustifiable runtime.
it was a chore of an album. merzy's particular brand of noise just doesnt do it for me, not individually. it's too artificial. i'm still looking forward to his collaborations on this chart, but I doubt i'll explore more of his solo work.

>Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Judging from my upward trend I'm definitely going to have to visit the Coltrane and Mingus albums soon as it seems my appreciation for the genre has already taken a bit of a tick up. This is really, really cool though. Like it oozes cool. The way it just slowly varies itself on each track gives the album an awesome feeling of progression and the trumpet playing here is excellent. The title seems fitting as the structure of some of these songs do remind me a bit of the Blues. So What is the definition of awesome and Blue in Green embodies beauty. Amazing stuff.

Still needs recs for Wonky and Glitch Pop before next week rolls around. Also, I've stuck true to my goal so far and written up a review of one of my favoruite albums the last two days so if any of you feel your inner poptimist shining I'd love if you guys checked them out.
