It would be intense if it were an overwhelming part of my image. I can’t censor myself; it’s really important for me to say how I feel. I needed to put out this song. I needed to make this song. I took one of the most shattering experiences of my life and turned it into something I can build a career on and that allows me to travel the world. I play it live every night. The whole process has been positive — engaging with that subject matter and making it into something good.
What did you have envisioned for your life before this year?
I wanted to go into research. I was into astrophysics and astronomy, but I wasn’t good enough at math and calculus to maintain that, so I got into neuroscience and psychology. Then it became clear that there were too many hoops to jump through. There was a period where two of my best friends died within a six-month period, both in traumatic ways. I thought, “If I’m not enjoying my life all the time, then what’s the point? I don’t know how long I’m going to live.” I decided to only do things that I liked doing, even if it meant being really poor. When you’re desperate, you’re going to work hard at something and not give a shit about anything else.
Were you raised with religion?

A former goth kid from Vancouver, Claire originally moved to Montreal to study Russian literature at McGill University, before switching to the neuroscience course. As a result, Claire reckons there is a "weird jubilance" to Visions. "It can totally be a party album if you want, which is hilarious to me because it's so tortured. But because it's about sloughing off that pain, there is a kind of joy in the way it takes you from utter depression to utter ecstasy."

But as with Grimes’ music, Boucher preferred autodidactism. Garossino recalls hearing Boucher teach one of Chopin’s nocturnes to herself, bar by bar. But only through the wall—at the time, Boucher had too much stage fright to even play the piano in front of her mother.
“Something that people don't understand about Claire is her searing intellect and focus,” Garossino said. “Whenever you think you've figured her out, she's already three moves ahead. Things are never what they seem.”
Her mother related how at McGill, the wunderkind wanted to take physics, but couldn’t stand introductory courses. Instead, Boucher entered higher-level classes and studied the prerequisite material at the same time. “She would nearly kill herself studying—surviving on almost no sleep for weeks at a time.”

Even if Grimes lost some older fans, after all she did the right moves. She needed a catchy and upbeat album to gain a bigger audience. She did in her own way, nobody else could do Art Angels.
If she would listen to what her fanbase want, she would be an obscure artist singing in half empty clubs.

Well I arrived part way through Hana's set and was stood at the top of some stairs. When Grimes came on I pushed down to the middle of the crowd. Some bitch demanded I stop jumping about so much so I pushed forward a bit.
I think Claire is ill because she kept apologising for liking but I didn't see her vomit. Set list was pretty great, I even enjoyed Go which I usually hate.
Regret getting a medium tshirt because it's so tight on me. Should have gotten a large. Massive Attack tomorrow night

Her music is anything but bland. As for "simplistic", her music is much more layered than most synthpop artists (even Kraftwerk are simpler than Grimes).
