Can I say Pinkerton? It was literally just whiny immature college aged white boy rock complaining about women and how hard life is and fetishizing asian women. I've heard it's a character he's playing but I feel like all of his songs are about topics like this, to a degree. I know a lot of people relate to the feelings of isolation and depression on this album, but to me it just came across as a whiny white boy who thinks life is so hard.
>>
Daydream Nation. Sounded boring and dull. Of course I'm missing it something, because there's no fucking way anyone could think this shit was good if it sounded the same to everyone the same as it did to me.

Explain yourselves.
>>
>>65942931
that's probably in my top 10 ever, and i'm not really sure how to explain it in counterpoint to 'sounded boring and dull.' but i like it a lot for the great punk/metal riffs combined with dreamy noise interludes. for example, the second half of The Sprawl is my favorite part on the album, with how it slowly builds around a hypnotic riff with more and more noise. i will say the album could probably lose rain king or candle, but still.

This album is overrated, people act like it's their best but the reality is that it's a handful of great songs with countless throwaway ambient/experimental/miscellaneous snippets thrown in. I can understand liking the disorienting and expansive sound of it but whenever I listen to it I just find myself waiting for one of the substantial post-rock songs to start.
Check out The Great Annihilator though, Swans are genuinely a great band. That's just not the best place to start with them.

Swans feels like something greater at times, start with Children of God or White Light from the Mouth of Infinity.

From what I've gathered it's less of an immersive, unbroken experience ala godspeed and something closer to a I suppose a collage piece or movie, where some scenes or pieces may blend into each other, but others may cut roughly to something unrelated to show you something new. From what I've gathered, it's less trying to form a world, and more some kind of general feeling or mindset.
Yum Yab and Volcano don't even bookend Helpless Child or The Sound, there are filler tracks/pseudo seagues between them that are ambient or drones usually.
I can't really describe it beyond that, but someone in the thread probably can.

That's kind of the exact thing the album is trying to do. It's meant to be sort of a creepy and whiny and disgusting thing. Depends on if you're reaction is "whoah he's disgusting" or "whoah we're both disgusting" if you like it or not I think.

I gotcha. I thought that too the first time Ive heard DD. The thing is, its hyped as this noise rock masterpiece, so one goes into the album expecting a heavy, noisy soind, sort of likeJesus and Mary Chain, when in fact SY sound is more based around dissonance, interplay and sometimes jams. It clicked when I listened to it expecting an ahead of its time, dissonant slacker indie rock album.

It has aged fine, Closer is much and much better though. I always recommend Closer when people can't get into Unknown Pleasures.

>>65942828
It's a rock opera around the main character called Pinkerton. He's a cheating and whiny piece of shit who in the end gets shot dead by his ex girlfriend. People love this album because of how honest River is (most of the album aren't lies but his real life experiences) and people can really relate to the feeling of isolation and the utter depression as you've said yourself.

>>65943251
Listen to The Smile Sessions.

>>65943261
I did not know that it was possible to dislike Talking Heads. The album is just a lot of fun and really energetic funk music.

>>65943662
Listen to Kid A which is I thinkthe best album to get into Radiohead. OK Computer is great in my opinion but I can agree that it feels dated and that it is massively overrated by RYM morons.

It's not aged, it was just always just a shit album compared to all the other post-punk going on at the time. Closer and New Order stuff is a vast improvement.

I never got why people jerk off over this one and Blue while they shit all over their later stuff. It's all the same fucking shit.
>>

Garbage opinion senpai
That album literally pioneered that type of minnimal, spacious post punk, and it's an accurate as hell representation of the type of deppression that makes you feel only bleakness and emptyness. Yes, it's minimal, it's musically simple: but that's the point. The lyrics, songwriting, production, atmosphere and aesthetic are all 10/10, and that's what matters.
>>
>>65941568
I'm in two minds about this album, it has some fantastic moments, and some absolute shitshows as well
>>65941642
It's a weird transition album between their pure pop and the psychedelia they reach on Revolver. personally that makes it a very valuable album for me.
>>65941694
Poor taste
>>65942713
I don't understand why it's heralded by so many as their best when Meat is Murder exists, but it's good.
>>65942811
I have a feeling there's a side of this album that I'll connect with one day, it's pretty dark and unforgiving. Also the tumblr cunts put me off.
>>65942828
Love this album. One of the reasons I like it is because it's a completely unrelenting whine by Rivers. He says things that many teenagers have thought about and eventually realised is immature, but he puts them on a fucking album for the world to see. It's the side of the male mind which people are often to embarassed to show.
>>65942931
The production put me off at first, but personally it's the interplay with guitars, the interesting song structures, and the brilliant noise and pop sides. I personally prefer EVOL, it does everything better and is a much more digestible length.
>>65943251
I've overlistened to this now, but holy shit I love this. Both the orchestration and the vocals are perfect, and his tortured character adds to it too.
>>65943261
Fucking groovy shit man, it's like a /mu/ acceptable version of "Off the Wall" with more bleeps

Never understood the love for this. A couple of good tracks but songs like Kitty Empire are BORING. Also whats the point of such low mastering, you can raise the the volume by something like 7dB without it clipping

It does sound really amateurish, and thats because almost every single indie rock pop band since has copied their general style.

no doubt the cover and title have played a big role in this album's longevity, but I think it stands up. It's just really raw and spiteful and whiney and angsty but it backs it up with some really surprisingly catchy licks. It's like Milo Goes to College or Pinkerton except written by one of the Columbine shooters. It ramps the edgy up to 11 but in a good way. Albini's later work and reputation also gives this album a signal boost that has helped its popularity IMO.

I can get what you mean about some boring tracks, I like them all but some are definitely better than others.

agreed, extremely underwhelming. At that point we've had This Heat, Chrome, Public Image Ltd., Rema-Rema, The Pop Group,

And within a year or two - Mass, Branca, The Sound.

I know it's not exactly fair to compare some of those to Joy Division, but as far as the idea of the post-punk movement goes - Unknown Pleasures is safe and boring as fuck.

Listen to The Great Curve, and remember that it was released when Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and Supertramp were the most accurate description of what America's tastes were at the time.

I mostly agree with a lot of the classics here being overrated AF (aside from Daydream Nation), but Remain In Light still sounds fresh 36 years after it was first released, and if anything it's still pretty underrated of an album considering just how ahead of it's time it was.

Don't get the universal appeal of this album at all. It's so boring, very generic safe-sounding soft rock. It came out in 1977, which was a major year in music evolution, punk was starting, Bowie doing his Berlin trilogy, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk paving the way for electronic, Steely Dan's AJA taking pop to a new level.

Yet this album does nothing new or interesting that hasn't been done better a dozen times before.

But it's hands-on the GOAT soft rock album, with a poppy façade that hides a level of musical intricacy that 70s prog bands would be proud of, and pop songwriting that rivals McCartney's best.

If pop music were hamburgers; simple, un-intimidating, and accessible, Rumours would be that one, incredibly special hamburger that you had years ago, that was so impeccably crafted that you still think about it years later and would hands-on choose it over a good steak.
