So, Tuva is a region just north of Mongolia that is ethnically and historically linked to it, yet it's been russian territory for quite a while now.
Tuvan traditional music is pretty well known, even for people who haven't listened to it nor care to, and Huun-Huur Tu are probably amongst the better known groups dedicated to it, along with Shu-De and Chirgilchin). A small ensemble of traditional lute-and-cello-like instruments (the Igil being the most iconic) accompanied by male singers displaying a variety of local techniques, such as Khoomei (deep overtone singing based on a drone and one or two simultaneous harmonics) and Sygyt (that strange whistle-like nasal sound they make by sealing the inside of their mouths with their tongues, leaving a small opening in the corner of the mouth). There's also what's called urtyn duu ("long song") which doesn't refer to the actual length of the song, but to the stretching of each syllable of each word, and is usually sung by women (there are no women on Huun-Huur Tu, so maybe Chirgilchin would be the best choice if you want to hear the beautiful female vocals that are a tender counterpart to the male rough tones).
Eventually their popularity meant that their sound adopted a few elements of international popular music (such as guitars). Nevertheless they remain a jewel in the family of traditional Tuvan performers.
This kind of music occupies a very special place in my life. I always come back to it. I used to spend hours as a child making droning noises with my voice and enjoying it to no end. Imagine my surprise when I found out there are several ancient schools of singing that are basically formalised versions of what I was doing intuitively.
