Wait you play music out loud? I can't do that without feeling self conscious and nervous about someone hearing. Even if there's little chance someone will hear it. It feels like walking outside without pants on.
>>
>>65870197
Man I moved into a new place with new roommates last month and blasted free jazz the first day (at a respectable time). I don't give a fuck, I hate wearing things on my head.
I play prob 95% of my music out loud.
>>
>>65870197
I also blasted musical abortions while my roommate upstairs was moving in, so that's his first impression of me. ^(oo)^ He's cool though, never did ask him what he thought of that.

Kraftwerk - The Man Machine (1st impressions)
This record starts out with a few nice electronic pop songs that are actually quite enjoyable. The repetition is mind-numbing (in a bad way) but it has enough flavour to keep it interesting enough to pay attention. The songwriting can be lazy at times, but the implementation of effects can almost forgive this.
The last 2 songs, however, are easily more annoying than anything played on pop radio stations today. Fucking headache inducing, and lacking direction and progression. I almost stopped listening to this, and I always follow through on records.
5.0
>>
>>65870982
Hmmm, might lower the score now that I'm reading my ""review"" as I scored it first.
Seems harsh for something I called average; maybe it's influence skewed my perspective slightly.
I enjoyed it less than Ziggy so I'm thinking 3.5, hopefully I piss some people off.

Horace Silver - Song To My Father (1st impressions)
Fuck I love jazz. Every piece seems to tell a different story and evoke a different emotion; this is no exception. About as listenable as Cannonball's Somethin' Else! while giving the artists space to voice their musical ideas. The individual songs seem like a collection of ideas rather than a whole coherent piece, which can be good or bad.
The musicianship is stellar, but can leave a little bit to be desired.
7.5

another chart lost in time, like tears, in rain

Hamlet Gonashvili - Hamlet Gonashvili (1995)
>georgian folk music, polyphonic chant

Chants have always tickled my fancy, and this is no exception to how I feel about this style. And not only are these chants exceptionally performed, there's a lot of cool instrumentation here, like on the opening piece. Samey, but that's expected from a comp, but dear lord if Gonashvili's voice and the way he control's it to perform these wonderful pieces doesn't send shivers down your spine you're probably dead.

3.5+

Yōran - Montparnasse (1981)
>sound collage

Too damn brief to make any sort of lasting impression. Which is a shame, because for what it is, it's really pretty. But the tracks meander in their prettiness rather than making any sort of lasting impression. I really do like the use of samples though, and its just got a really wistful atmosphere that I dig. 11 minutes is just far too short for what it wants to accomplish though.

2.5-

So instead of listening to the Aphex discography like I said I would I decided to listen to all of Django Reinhardt's The Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order--a 6 hour comp--in one go. I got through the whole thing just today, and I even gave disc 3 another listen. I'd say I'm pretty proud of myself, but it honestly wasn't that hard. Nearly every song on it is great, and disc 3 is particularly stunning.

But I saw a play tonight, so I didn't have time to finish the review. That'll come tomorrow with some other stuff. Maybe Aphex this time.

I'm back from the horrors of real life. this time even more tired than ever.

>Low - The Curtain Hits the Cast

I've never really liked Low in the first place. this isn't changing my mind. I don't think have anything noteworthy to say about this album.

>Escape the Day - Ghostless

just realized I didn't put this on the chart. it gets a light blue from me though. I think I'm going to grow to enjoy this A LOT more. this is just too moody. accomplishes everything it hopes to achieve. extremely dreary and soul crushing. just how I like it.

>Mark Kozelek & Jimmy LaValle - Perils From the Sea

this shouldn't be so good. THIS SHOULDN'T BE SO GOOD.

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
Yeah man, straightforward yet not quite punk rock
really like the first 2 tracks
The bass guitar with all of it's flourishes are great for the entirity
felt kind of ambivalent to the rest of the album, it had really good moments though
not much to say about this one, listen to it, it's pretty good

Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
Man, when everything gels, it gels really well
Built to Spill, especially at this point of their career, fucking knew how to structure an independent rock song when they cared enough to blow your fucking mind
There are certain tracks where they showcase this casual mind-blowingness quality, The Plan, Carry the Zero and Else chief among them.
It's not quite as good as Perfect From Now On, it's a bit of a tone down but for what it is it casually murders albums in the same genre

what next

>>
>>65879175
There's two guys. Bazin wrote for Cahiers du cinema, and the most comprehensive collection of his essays available in English is What is Cinema. There are other collections on more specific subjects but starting with WiC? is a safe bet. As for Beckett you'll want to check out Waiting For Godot and if you're really pomo, his trilogy of novels starting with Molloy. Haven't read those myself but people who like Beckett usually recommend those for starters.
>>
>>65879267
I was the Filosofem shitposter in the last /daily/. Loving his stuff.
>>
>>65879296
Noticed after I posted, sorry, meant Bazin, and within that any cinema work by him?
>>
>>65879271
I think all of them are over 20 minutes, pretty sure Deathspell Omega is near an hour
>>
>>65879308
I've only read two essays by him prior to buying the book, The Virtues and Limitations of Montage and The Evolution of the Language of Cinema. These are both in the first volume of the collection which seems to be more of an introduction to his theories while volume 2 is more about applications in specific films and movements. If you're gonna seek them out get volume 1 first. I couldn't find a general manifesto by him, I know Truffaut published one that for the most part agrees with Bazin's views but I didn't seek it out. You can't go wrong with any French New Wave director's writings from the 50s, they're all pretty much in line with him. Familiarise yourself with them maybe. I can't help you beyond that, I'm just starting with him as well.

Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
It is undeniable that Joanna Newsom is one of the premier vocal talents of this generation. There's just this homely quality to her voice that is so magnetic, it also helps that she has created some of the most vividly realized and mellifluous lyricism of all time. This much is confirmed after listening to Have One On Me, Ys was not a fluke.
One can lay down on the couch, put this on and float away on the melodies.
It's not quite as grand as Ys, but it doesn't need to be... Whereas Ys felt like the musical distillation of all the poetic flair of a just graduated English Major looking to impress (which is by no means a slight of the album) Have One On Me sounds markedly more mature. The content is no longer about hairless and blind cavalry and the pain of lovers lost to war, but focused inwards, more mundane and human.
It's fucking fantastic, in short.

what now, something short, that was something to digest

>>
>>65881180
Which one entails going outside?

>Love - Da Capo
I think Forever Changes is good, not great. Da Capo is known for being the precursor and the single, "Seven and Seven Is," which is about as aggressive as Love gets. The rest of the album is quite rough though. Sounds like not a lot of it was properly hashed out beforehand, as apparent on the 18-minute closer, which has some rare good ideas but is otherwise nearly unlistenable. Lots of baroque harpsichord pop throughout--the kind that hasn't aged well. I can just name a dozen other bands doing similar stuff to this but better. 4/10

That's a good thing - it means you're listening to more music that you like than that you don't. The only way a perfectly symmetrical curve makes sense is if you listened to an equally as bad album for every good album; which is retarded and not something to strive for imo.

Slint EP
9/10
Sounds like Tweez with the winding, narrative style arrangements of Spiderland. It has a certain richness that only a band like Slint can achieve, tightly focused without any vocal melodies. Is all at once dark, driving and tense.

Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton
8/10
Feels like one giant collage, with tape music samples, dreamy lo fi guitar, vocal melodies that sound like a diary entries. The most unique Swirlies release.

Polvo - Today's Modern Lifestyles
7/10
Creative and interesting post-hardcore. Tracks will often have sections or vocals that feel disconected from the rest of the music, an example being the fade transition on Action vs. Vibe. Recommended to fans of post-hardcore.

Constatine Sankathi / Bev.Clone split 7"
4/10
Great groove to the opening track by Constatine and the only thing really worth hearing. The next track has a terrible compressed trumpet line that destroys the mood. Bev.Clone's side grows stale quickly.

The Lazarus Plot - The End 7"
7/10
Beautiful blend of indie and emo. The bands best release. The vocal can be annoying and over the top.

Death Grips - Bottomless Pit (1st impressions)
Great textures and energy; haven't enjoyed a release from DG this much in a few years.
Still it feels a little same-y. It's weird to me that a band would be content releasing the same formula style consistently for 5 years. I guess if it works...

Hi there!
You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!
Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bait to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Which era Doors? Stooges were defined by the primal, simple thing that no-one else was doing. I think they were more explicitly inspired by the 60's Rolling Stones

I disagree, the comparison was made because they jam the same and have similar vocal delivery
You're right, Doors are psych (although I tend to more closely associate them with blues) and Stooges are punk, but they have a similar sort of rambling song structure, Stooges are The Doors if they were more angery

I haven't explored too much Stooges. The debut has some really good songs, but it just sounds like Stooges before the natural development of their sound.

People will have varying opinions on the other Doors albums. I like L.A. Woman almost as much as the debut

Nilsson - Aerial Ballet (1968)
>baroque pop

A review on RYM says that this is always one step away from falling into the abyss of pure novelty, and I'm inclined to agree for a few of the tracks here. There's nothing wrong with tracks like these really, but the way that they're just kinda forced in between the more mature, melancholic songs is just totally goofy and jarring and kills the flow of the album. And songs like "Good Old Desk" and "Little Cowboy" aren't exactly too great anyway. But there are great songs here, like the obvious "Everybody's Talkin" and "One", and deeper cuts like "Don't Leave Me". There's also kinda an issue with a lack of emotion and passion here, but I'd say the arrangements make up for most of that.

i see uncle meat, hosono house, youth of america, gris-gris, giles corey, black woman(?), you are my everlovin/celestial power, and inside the dream syndicate II. and i think the one between waltz for debby and hosono house is riley's in c? maybe?
>>

I'll check the rest of his music out if I like it then, which I think I will from what I've read.

Actually heard about him recently reading a John Reis (Drive Like Jehu, RFTC) interview where he said Yonkers has been a big inspiration to his guitar playing in the past 10 years and he wanted to do his surf album with The Blind Shake after hearing how well they worked with Yonker's style.

Talking Heads - 77 [dubs: the album] (1st impressions)
This is a really fun album. Catchy hooks, interesting melodies and pretty good lyrics. Definitely set the bar for new wave; since their first album they've really seemed to master normie-friendly experimentation. They sound like an american CBGB-version of Wire.
