Could Someone Explain Why RYM (And Other Film Sites) Are So 'Director-Centric'?
Does the role of director, and the overall contribution they make on a film, receive a disproportionate amount of focus?
On RYM we've got:

All pretty much focusing directors.
The director's traditional role is to oversee the creation of a motion picture from the artistic side of the equation, but perhaps 'the boss' gets a bit too much praise, attention or criticism in relation to the finished product.
In order to have a great film, you need a great story, hence writers. If it's a visually stunning film, you'll need a quality cinematographer. In order for it to flow, you need seamless editing. The list goes on...
To use an analogy, if a film is like a building:
The producers are the real estate firm
The writers are the architects
The editor, cinematographer et al. are mechanical engineers
The director is the general contractor
The actors are the assorted workmen
The crew are apprentices
...The last time I checked, the GC doesn't have such notoriety.
So, in closing: Does the entire culture surrounding the discussion of film (both on RYM and elsewhere), focus too much attention - and heap too much praise - on the director? And if so, is it just a habit picked up from other venues (i.e. the Hollywood Reporter and imdb)?

Yes and no to the attention question. Think of the director like a collage artist or a beat based hip-hop musician. They use other people's work to make their own product. Ultimately how you view that product is gonna be from what your background is and for most people their background is from the side of the artist. So the director is pretty damnimportant, but you can kind of read the film in any way you want. It's similar to the arguemment of whether we should think of DJ Shadow as the true creator of Endtroducing or the people who made the clips he sampled. No matter what you personally think society has chosen an answer already, but you are free to chime in.
