My guitar has 5 knobs and active pickup, 3 of them are for tone, but the 4th one i cannot figure out, all it does is add hissing.

What kind of guitar do you have?

I take valium for a few days when I get like that. It's a pharmaceutical holiday.
>>
>>65770272
I don't have a bass or a job and instead of getting a job all I want to do is kill myself.
I do plan on getting some sort of cheap bass at some point to mess with.
>>65770299
I have an acoustic and an electric. If I had valium or damn near any other drug I'd probably be on that shit right now, but I'm out of money and drugs don't really help with this anyways. Distractions are nice though

>>
>>65773052
looks 10/10. go for it. looks are more than half the battle, surely gibsons a good brand. looks great then just have it set up nice intonation, relatively fresh strings... the worst case scenario is that like you want to replace the pickups for some reason but it should be great.

>>
>>65773052
The bridge pickup is horrible, and the neck is great but too muddy for somr things, forcing you to use the lousy bridge. That tone isn't worth it. Also, neck dive.
>>
>>65773229
Why the fuck are people in this thread going to church. That's doing nothing for your tone you superstitious cunts.
>>
I have been playing guitar for a while and I'm gravitating more and more towards heavier music. My strat just isn't cutting it for the style of music I currently want to play. Looking for a metal guitar, heard you guys say the Ibanez RG series is decent. Any specific model?

>>
>>65773380
Any guitar with a humbucker bridge will give you a heavy tone. If you want it to look like a metal guitar that's up to you. Anyway your strat in position 4 ought to do it. Otherwise I'd say a baritone for good measure is a good idea. I kinda like the looks of the hadron, plus the neck through makes it good for shredding.

Thanks for the advice. Another part of why I'm looking at another guitar is wanting have multiple guitars in different tunings, because I'm lazy and knowing I'll have to re tune to play puts me off. I had three electrics at one point; an epiphone SG that I threw some heavier gauge strings on for really low shit, an austin that was drop tuned and the strat. I had to sell the Austin and SG to fix my car.

The Roland JC120 is a Solidstate so you dont need to crank it. It has a great built in chorus/Vibrato and a good reverb (as far as I can remember) the clean tone is amazing but the distortion in the amp is not great, but it takes pedals great so just get that for distortion.

Doesn't have to be an RG. They just typically have thinner necks and are overall more conducive to "playing fast".

Just get a guitar with a humbucker in the bridge and put 11s on it, you'll be good to go.

Not really. They aren't bad guitars but when you ask about for the money it's hard to say yes.

Guys how often do you get your guitars professionally set up? I mean take it into a music store and pick it up the next day?

I've done it maybe 3 times ever, I've been playing guitar for almost a decade, so this seems pretty sporadic - but every time I've gotten it back it plays like a fucking dream. I also live in a climate where the humidity is completely fucked between seasons so my acoustic gets a little warped I guess.

Is there a guide online about how to professionally set up a guitar? I mean action, truss rod, cleaning, strings, everything a professional tech would do? Or how do you learn?

The intro to Roundabout
>>
>>65783247
Apparently according to another anon they aren't very comfortable to play and can neck dive pretty good. Most short scale basses don't have a very complex tone, which makes them kinda useful because you can get away with being as melodic as you like. Also, short scale and semi-hollow mean more attack. This can be good for emphasizing rhythm.

On the other hand, the tone can be described as "dead". They're kinda less pleasurable to practice on for that reason. You also have a smaller dynamic range though really that's not a problem.

Mini humbuckers are probably my least favorite bass pickup of all time. Obviously some people like them so make up your own mind on that.

I myself have a Behringer U-Phoria UMC22 as interface (got two inputs so you can record guitar and vocals at the same time if you want to). Pretty much plug and play, plus if you ever get proper studio monitors you can hook them straight up to the interface.
For software, I got Amplitube 3 with all the expansions (so simulations of Orange, Fender, Marshall etc.). It's pretty cool, though bear in mind that it sounds better through speakers than on headphones (much like a practice amp).
Also, for distorted sounds I found Native Instruments Guitar Rig to have a wider variety, though I never use it since it's a bit convoluted and doesn't feel much like real gear.

Tonally they're just neck and bridge pickup Mini Stratocasters, they sound exactly like a Strat and sometimes if you dial it in right the bridge can sound twangy like a Tele. The neck scale is great 24.75 is arguably the perfect scale for the average guitarist. The radius on the mustangs are so/so 9.5 is the standard Fender scale and usually have jumbo frets, 7.25 is described in my post I replied to. For the money?
>Fender Mustangs sold secondhand?
Not really I remember them being sold for $350-450 a couple years back

> Fender Mustangs imported straight from Japan like Ishibashi?
Never. $600-800 and customs will fuck you in the ass, plus the bodies are majority basswood so it's just an upgraded Squier version

> Squier VM Mustang?
Hell yes. You can get them easily for under $250, the neck is great and it plays nice too if you give it a good setup. The only flaw is the pickups so you'll need to swap those eventually but you can fit any Strat pickup in there anyways. I'll suggest Lace Senors, Duncan's, Fenders, GFS, (if you wanna be cheap) Curtis Novak, and Lindy Fralins

Very nice guitar mate.
>>65781130
I own one and I love it. If you live in the US, you won't be charged any customs taxes for imports like >>65787901 said. I paid $625 total for mine, which is a 1969 reissue with a matching headstock.

Anyway, a question, somebody asked about the Crush 20 earlier and was replied with "you could do worse". I was actually planning on buying one for bedroom practice since my old modeling amp is acting wonky. I considered the Marshall DSL5C but then I realized I don't really need a tube amp for bedroom practice, so I decided to go solid state.

I could get a Crush 20 for $100 but do you guys have other SS amp recommendations for bedroom playing?
>>
>>65775843
I would but the thing is I hate those wide and slim Jag/Jazz bodies they just look like flattened blobs. I'll measure my neck pocket and see if I can fit a Jaguar neck onto the mustang, when I tried out some Jaguars the necks were really nice.
>>
>>65782716
I get it done once a year but its usually a new guitar that plays like shit or my shitty old Teisco. I learn from Dave's World of Fun Stuff on YouTube, watch the ones where he teaches a girl named Danielle (I think?) he explains his methods well on there. Also the guys from Stewmac they have a lot if prescise techniques they do for standard repair and maintenance. Average you should pay is like $45

Absolute beginner here. I need some help. I've been trying to get the D chord down right and I'm having trouble with my 3rd/ring finger which I place on the 2nd string on the 3rd fret pushing down on the 1st string and muting the sound. Is there anything I should keep in mind while practicing to eliminate this? Also, why is it recommended to always press down on the edge of the feet? Thanks

focus on just that finger for a minute, take the other 2 off. roll your finger around on the fretted string and see how much room you have until it makes contact with the strings above and below. both the E and G strings should ring clearly as you play that 3rd fret D on the B string. personally, i have about 1.5mm space between the nail and the G string, and maybe 1mm between the pad of my finger and the E string, sometimes less depending on the angle of my finger. whatever size your window is, that's where you need to have your finger every single time you go to fret that chord. play slow and focus on fretting every chord as cleanly as possible. it will quickly become muscle memory.

if you want to see why you should be fretting as close to the fret as possible, experiment with varying degrees of finger pressure right on the fret, in the middle, and far away. you'll find that it takes much less force to make a much cleaner note the closer you are to the fret.

Was a Squier VM that I stripped and re finished, made the back of the neck satin and stripped some of the lacquer completely, looks like a shitty relic job on the neck but is incredibly comfy.

I resprayed in Nitro Sherwood Green with matching peghead and a thin Nitro Satin Clearcoat.

I put a buzzstop on it and stuck a Fender 65 pickup in the neck and it sounds killer, plays better than any other Jag Ive played.

Plus anime sticker on the back makes the tone better.

That's a pretty massive category, but in general they don't play well without work. Not only can you bet any vintage instrument is going to need work, but these are particularly cheaply made vintage instruments.

If you want to know how to get one playing nice, start by buying the first $20 guitar on craigslist. If you can get that playing perfect, a teisco is a fine guitar.

Well what i did would talk to people who clearly are into music (wearing band tees and Fender/Gibson shirts) about music and what they like and see if they play anything. My first band consisted of suburban kids that wanted to play blues. My band in high school was a pop punk band with me and the bassist who listened to a lot of 70s punk and the drummer and guitarist listened to a lot of pop punk. I also joined a stoner metal band in my freshman year of college because I met a stoner drummer and guitarist at a Sunn O))) concert an we lived nearby. Right now I'm just making some garage rock with some guys I've met living in the outskirts of Chicago.

What are you guys working on now?

I'm procrastinating really hard on my ambient project, it's been 1+ years and I have only written 3 songs, one isn't even good.

I'm interested in writing pieces for solo electric guitar, Joe Pass style but like the piano is usually classical pieces solo wise, the electric guitar is usually jazz oriented. Not that it's a bad thing of course, but it's gonna take a while to absorb the vocabulary of jazz.
