i never got that joke anyway

this is a repost from the last thread:

My first tourney is over! And Vinter is confirmed for having fantastic taste in music.
Thank you everyone for participating, there genuinely wasn't an album here I didn't enjoy.
I might end up doing a review for the winning album, but for now I want to let its brilliance sink in.

WHAT A HIATUS THIS HAS BEEN

Bjork - Vespertine
Vespertine is Bjork at her best. I'm honestly not sure whether I prefer Homogenic or Vespertine more, they're both amazing. This is Bjork at her most romantic, it's just such a sexy album (this must be why all the crazies on /mu/ go full Ricardo). Bjork really knows how to start off her albums and Hidden Place might be her best. I enjoyed this album a lot. 8.7.

Bjork - Medulla
Wow. This is a weird album. This is pretty unique and experimental, but at the same time feels not very experimental, like it's already been kind of done. I did like it, Who Is It is an amazing song and this album does have other highlights, but the rest just mostly felt a little unmemorable or perhaps too strange (or just 'plain odd'). 7.1

Bjork - Volta

>Mikey Dread - World War III
The title of the album doesn't sound very positive but I love the positive messages on here. Could sound preachy but no it's just a genuin person talking how he feels. At first I wasn't that convinced of the album, never really listend to much Dub/Reggae, but with a few more listens I really started to feel the vibe. How great is the track "Loseres Weepers, Finder Keepers"? Very great. It's 1 in the morning and I'm listening to this and it fits perfectly. It's so relaxing and I'm just sitting here nodding my head throughout the whole album.

On another note. I'm almost done with my current chart (one more album). I would appreciate a few recommendation for the blank spots on the chart for the next few days. It was really fun listening to all that stuff you guys recommended me this week, even if I didn't like the album I still enjoyed listening to all of them because on my own I would have never came across them. Really appreciate it. Will post new chart in the next post.

where the shit is benji
reposting once more cos I need a tape from that mf, f'real:

MIXTAPE TOURNEY FINALS

oh man, you guys. the rake is so close now. it's just begging to be won.

SDC made a really great mix. My favorite tracks were Trouble Every Day by Zappa, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix (I adored this song when I was younger), and Nothing by The Fugs-- but SDC's strength is in making mashups. The closer is what makes this mix great- Laurie Anderson's O Superman spliced with Whitehouse's Cut Hands Has The Solution. Absolute genius.

Benji also made a really stellar mix for me, the theme of which was love. It opens on two gorgeous fado songs by Carlos Paredes and Amália Rodrigues. My favorite songs on the mix are those, Snowstorm by Galaxie 500, Open by Rhye (a song I knew prior), and Feel You by Julia Holter.

Benji's mix was underwhelming initially, whereas SDC's grabbed me immediately. As time has passed though, I find myself listening to Benji's mix, Sweet Kisses and Sour Sweats, much more than cunt's C.B.L. presents Sparagmos.

Benji advances in to the final round, against sshx.

sshx, I cant remember what theme you're doing. could you remind me?

Benji, your final mix must be under 1 hour and fit one of the following themes:
inclement weather
hype/party music
drone/noise/ambient mix

>Terry Allen - Juarez
Lyrical genius, but not quite as in the music department. Side note: why the fuck is it so hard to find the lyrics for this album? They’re spoken pretty clearly and are really on their own plane of existence. (If I can’t find the lyrics for every song here soon, I’ll transcribe them and post them to Genius.com with some annotations.)

The album tells a bunch of vaguely connected vignettes (there may be a greater underlying story here, but I’ll have to study the lyrics a little more closely) about a bunch of people in the desert somewhere stretching across Northern Mexico and maybe the Southwestern United States. In his lyrics he uses lot of really beautiful and clever descriptions and wordplay. It’s really like some kind of lengthy epic poem in a way. Once I dissect the lyrics it’s likely the rating will increase.

The music, as I said, is nothing too special. It’s mostly Allen playing a mostly somber piano and singing his poems and stories over them, part barseat blues style, part country-folk singer style, part campfire story style. Occasionally he’s joined by minimal drumming or light, twangy guitar plucking. The last song actually has a full band: vocals, guitar, drums, piano, and an accordion.
>7/10

>Sonic Boom - Spectrum
Well now I'm pretty sure of which part of Spacemen 3 I am not a fan, and his name is Sonic Boom, aka Peter Kember. On Spectrum, Kember plays an abject Lou Reed, producing lazy, synthesizer and pedal effect-laden half-covers of Heroin, lyrically and sonically, for a few tracks.

The tracks are pretty lengthy too, with "Angel" clocking in at 7:52 and the impossibly boring closer "If I Should Die", 9:18. Unfortunately the best and noisiest song, "You're the One" is one of the shortest. And by "best" I mean, "really sounds like a lamer cut off Daydream Nation."

The rest of the album is wholely unremarkable minimal, repetitive, noise rock (but with synthesizers).

>Various Artists - Folk Music of Hungary
A short bunch of Hungarian “peasant songs” from the personal collection of none other than Béla Bartók. Apparently for this record, he went back and re-recorded folk songs that he already had recorded in villages, choosing for this recording to invite the same peasants in a studio.

I think this process made the recordings feel very flat, as if the performers were isolated for each song. The singing and playing was mostly monophonic, so it’d just be one lady singing, stopping, another lady singing, stopping, somebody playing an instrument, stopping, another lady sings, etc. It gets rather boring. The liner notes actually go into some theory analysis for each song, and actually admits that a bunch of the songs are similar in core structure.

When the polyphony did arrive, it was what sounded like a mess of bagpipes, and wholly unsatisfying across however many tracks.

On atmosphere, the whole album seemed to have a very sorrowful, and at best, somber atmosphere. Even the joyous cacophony of bagpipes sounded like the aural equivalent of a sad smile. Those poor peasants, I guess.
>4/10

>Cat Chamber - Demo
I genuinely have no idea what to rate this. I’m stuck between giving it a 1 or 2 and giving it a 9 or 10.

On one hand, it genuinely sucks in most measurable capacities. This is a lo-fi recording of a 6yo “””singing””” over her dad providing some lazy guitar strumming. I don’t think anything gets cut either. And when I say “”””singing”””” I mean 6yo rambling. It’s terrible. Every “note” catches somewhere between Daniel Johnston and a dying cat.

On the other hand, it’s a very endearing listen, and a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a child. She really tries to sing songs, and occasionally comes out sounding somewhat like the Shaggs a few times. On one of 21 untitled tracks, she sings about how into cigarettes she is, but then gets sick and-that’s-why-you-shouldn’t-smoke. On another, she addresses the audience, and you can here the synapses firing, and she recognizes the way she’s addressing the audience is more like a flight attendant addresses a plane full of passengers, so she switches to the latter mid-sentence.

It’s an adorable and actually fascinating record. I’d give it a ten because I think everyone should hear it, but I’d also be inclined to give it a 2 for a complete dearth of any musical talent. I mean, it’s like a 6 year old, for Christ’s sake.
>???/10

>Masakosan
In a weird little Japanese synth-punk/zolo album owing a lot to Devo (seemingly acknowledged in the track “DEVO”), Masakosan present a peculiar brand of pop across 12 quick tracks. Unfortunately, peculiar in this case comes part and parcel with “annoying,” which manifests in the singers sounding a lot like Crazy Frog. Fortunately this comparison isn’t too apt most of the time, but it’s still noticeable on a few tracks, and holds back an otherwise nice album.

Most of the songs are standard synth punk and zolo affair (read: sounds like Devo and Beefheart) so while peculiar, it isn’t exactly unpredictable. Synths buzz and nasally (and yes, occasionally Crazy Frog-y) vocals narrate. To borrow Scaruffi’s favorite word, little bits of dada seep in between the cracks, filling silences about the tracks with clips of noise and musique concrete.

All in all, somewhat unimpressionable beyond the annoying vocals and Devo-esque sound, but pretty neat for what it is.

>Ananda Shankar - Ananda Shankar
I had high hopes for this album, with descriptors like 'raga rock' and covers of "Light My Fire" and "Jumpin Jack Flash", but it was unfortunately pretty disappointing. I've heard bizarre covers of those songs before, too, and enjoyed them then. It's really unfortunate that I'm not a fan of this particular execution.

Well, at best it's not particularly interesting, annoying at worst. It feels like very forced psychedelia, with the whole thing annoyingly based around an electric (?) sitar. I've heard the sitar used to great effect before, and I'm a fan of the usual tambre instrument even outside of Hindustani classical music, but this I'm not a fan of. Nearly every song employs the instrument as if it were a guitar. The result is trying to shove a rounded rectangle peg into a square hole, or trying to make a microtonal instrument play boring 'ol western tonal music. As a result, damn near every note out of that sitar ends with that same stupid sitar twang sound.

In the few brief moments where it doesn't do this, it sounds instead like a banjo, no large improvement. Admittedly the covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire" are decent, if overtly corny.
>4/10

>Corina Corrina - Corina Corrina Tour ’82
A very sparse demo tape for an apparently failed band called Corina Corrina. I’m not sure where they’re from, but I’m pretty sure the singing is Japanese. Beside the singing, there’s just a piano and drums, performing virtually nondescript and simple pop ballads. The drumming varies from martial to jazz, steady parade tom to light hi hat dancing. The piano is more consistent, but occasionally picks up for a better song, like on my favorite track, “Soft Shoes.”

Most of it, as I mentioned, is fairly unmemorable, if pretty. No major complaints, I suppose.

And final one. I think my reviews might be getting a bit lazier, but there was definitely more to write, so it's not that unjustifiable.

Overall, I think I might be getting better at writing though? I still struggle to start and conclude each review in a unique, engaging, and vaguely grammatically correct manner. I also think my tone is a little too comfortable/loose, and could be better structured.

>Egaheer - Demo ’93 & ’94
Damn. The whole thing sounds like some surprisingly interesting indie rock recorded with a toilet, but the singer keeps ringing it with that screeching! Of course I’m being facetious, only to a degree though. This is supposed to be a black metal demo or something, but it really does mostly sound like great indie rock with an organ and screamo vocalist.

I still just can’t stand screamo screeching, or any hardcore metal screeching for that matter. The dude sings normally a few times, and it’s really blissful. I wish there was more of that.

I think I'm mostly writing for myself anyhow. If I wanted people to read everything, I'd break it down into more manageable chunks. If you see something you might be interested in, though, read the review, I guess.

I obviously appreciate all responses and criticism though, so feel free to levy either.

Echospace - Liumin: Very dubby, nice background music. I can picture myself focusing on some equation while pulses of bass cheer me through my efforts sometime in the near future. I'd honestly rather listen to 90's dub techno though, like something from the Chain Reaction label. There is a scuba diving video that pairs lovely with "Submarine," terrific blues in there for sure. Don't get me started on the assorted species of fish! So many! Donate to coral reef conservation.

"BCN Dub" tickles my dub fancy, but I am hard pressed to articulate why. Perhaps the bass is a slightly faster tempo than other tracks, perhaps because around 2:30 new elements are introduced marking a slight change of increasing intensity. I suspect some less threatening variant of Stockholm Syndrome at play with the 10+ minute tracks as the listener becomes transfixed by the repetition and results in an inevitable hypnotic trance as every note, every sonic reverberation, sticks to the mind like adhesive in a terrifying calculated clairvoyance. Who am I to complain? Sometimes ignorance is bliss in the world of dub techno.

By the track "Float" I thought I had had enough dub techno, and I still feel that way. Actually this track begins half as dubby as its dub stricken predecessors, instead opening with a gurgling bubbled synth just reminiscent of dubbiness but not actual dub, bud.

//Did I hear someone say 'L U S H'?// Yes- it was the disc one closer "Warm," here to save me from my dubbanical nightmare in its plush eiderdown arms. Field recordings of a stereo and jabbering persons of Asian descent aside, this nice track calls to mind glacial ambient a la Thomas Koner despite the implied temperature not so subtlety hinted in the title. The samples actually fit quite nicely and grounds the album in a more humanistic world than it would have sans the vocal samples. It almost made me want to hear the entirety of ambient disc 2 but I must save it for another (rainier- more industrial) day.

I don't have enough time left in the day to review another album after this one so Arca, SILY and MBDTF will have to wait :(

Bjork - Biophilia
After listening to the crazy comlexity that was Medulla and the complete and utter clusterfuck that was Volta, Biophilia feels wonderful on the ears. Most of it is very light and delicate, and the storytelling elements are beautiful. When it does get complex and hard, such as the intense breakbeats on Crystalline and the hyper intense kicks reminiscent of Hardstyle EDM on Mutual Core, it doesn't feel messy. If Volta is Drukqs, Biophilia is Syro. When it does stray from being light, it is so important and memorable to the composition. Despite the fact you have breakbeats and heavy hardstyle kicks as well as intense sub-bass throughout, they don't feel like they are not supposed to be on this album consisting mostly of strings, choirs, organs. It's a beautiful blend of old and new. 7.8.

>Keiji Haino, Jim O’Rourke, Oren Ambarchi - Imikuzushi
Dis good. U did good.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this. I don’t really like Haino’s brand of wankery, but this was nice. Super in-your-face, intense, improvised noise rock. I know that whether or not the timbre of instruments is pleasing to someone is really subjective, but I feel like it’s worth mentioning how pleasing just the sound of any note sounds on this album. Fuzzy and distorted, but not ear piercing, almost like shoegaze. And of course the actual playing was great.

>Thomas
>Yo La Tengo - Electr-O-Pura
Shit I gotta listen to more Yo La Tengo, this was really good. I don’t know why I haven’t listened to this before actually, I’ve liked the Yo La Tengo records I’ve heard. Hmm. I don’t really want to write a review or anything since everyone knows their stuff, but I’ll say that they’re doing a great job delivering the kind of music they typically do. Thoughtful quiet indie with some distorted guitars.

ehhh fuck I’m just gonna say that this ends in a tie. Seems fitting. Fuck Tourneys.

Lullatone - Plays Pajama Pop Pour Vous:

Too cutesy. Very relaxing. Literal ASMR but not quite as creepy (one wonders if this is because I can't understand what they are saying). "Magical..." was like getting a hearing test by a Japanese nurse- but I'm four years old in this scenario. Good or bad(??) "Pajama Party Pop" sounds like you would think, but maybe quieter, like someone's mom just came in and told us to be quiet so we're all whispering but still having a pillow fight and the room is glowing pink from a tinted lampshade. Pleasant with little substance. I'm sensing this is a very niche genre of music, highly recommended if you are an ASMR connoisseur. "Building Castles In The Sky" had me cringing at the closeness of the whispers egh. Some sort of reclusive evil hidden behind the paper doll's smile. It's creepier than I initially gave it credit for.

Favorite songs: the non vocal parts

Hey guys I'm making another 8x8 chart for the one after this one, so if you find something in this list that you think I should year (that's not on this chart) feel free to rec it:
https://rateyourmusic.com/collection/I_AM_FISH/stag/to+do/

I don't really feel compelled to talk about many of these, being so mediocre and all, but I'll give a quick summary of the ones that really struck me:

Absolutely Freak Out is the worst thing I've heard by AMT, and doesn't have anything tangible to do with Zappa (which is honestly one of the only reasons I listened to it.

Trilogie de la mort was DEFINITLY worth it, a very very satisfying drone, although the final track kept me wanting a bit more.

Negativland's EP made me excited for the album, which I should probably hear next.

Jai Paul wasn't as great as I've had hyped for it, but I enjoyed it more on second listen. Alt R&B is very hit-or-miss for me so I'm glad I've found something more middle ground.

What should I hear next from this? I'm starting Flipper's Guitar next probably.

I'm starting a new chart without any criteria, because I've learned that I never finish a chart when it has rules.

FAUST IV –Medium 7
I'm expecting this to grow on me as Faust's debut did, but I don't think this fourth album is as good as the debut. I like how Faust can assemble a mix of musical ideas into a collage of sorts, but Faust IV didn't do that so well for me; some of the tracks (the opening track would be a good example) go on for a bit too long without the weird experimental segues that I was used to in the first album. I also prefer a surreal and cryptic feel to the more lighthearted nature explored on this album. All this being said, I still enjoyed it a lot as a Krautrock album; I don't think I've heard any krautrock I dislike yet.

I should mention that the Faye Wong album isn't as good as most Cocteau Twins albums but it does differentiate itself with some pretty overt c-pop elements, including her vocal style, so that's cool.

I feel like I should write more on Private Parts sometime but I'll have to familiarize myself with the lyrics a lil more.

>>65654348
The Glowing Man in particular or Swans overall? Because afaik most people like Swans around here, r-right?

In any case, TGM is similar to the Seer and TBK, to no one's surprise, so if you like those albums there's really no reason not to like this one. It does have a slightly more mellow feel to it than those two albums, though.
>>
>>65654401
The very few times I've played Swans in plug they've always been the ones to gather the most dislikes. But I love the style of Seer and TBK so this news makes me happy at least

Are you referring to the Aldean meme? Old 2015 meme to be h. It'll be over once summer leaves.

As for them sucking? Yeah, it's not really possible to discuss them anymore on /mu/. They're associated both with sub-/mu/core and poseurcore, so they'll never be cool to like. Also, after they were kind of discovered on RYM and memed to death, people got sick of it fast.

I've had a couple successful threads about Fishmans where I was actually able to discuss them, but it always had to be cryptic shit without actually posting an album or having "Fishmans" or an album name in the title of the OP. /daily/ is really the only place I can talk about them at all, honestly.

I challenge you to look at the IP number for Aldean threads. They usually doesn't reach above anything you could count on one hand.
>>
>>65654542
Well yeah, aldean is obvious but more recently I've been seeing threads talking about the live album being terrible too (though it's most likely the same few posters you're talking about)

I'm sorry fish, I know they're your favorite band so it sucks you can't get a proper discussion going with anyone else besides memers on the best (worst) general on the board.

When I finally get around to their discography I'm sure I'll become a fan.
>>
>>65654572
I honestly haven't really left /daily/ in the past few weeks other than browsing the archive a few times and posting on a chart thread once, so I guess I haven't seen any of that.

General rule of thumb for any "discussion" on /mu/ for me is that almost no one ever starts a thread with "I don't like this" looking to start any sort of discussion.

The reason I have one gorillion friends on RYM is pretty much for Fish-related discussion actually, since I can't really do so here.

>When I finally get around to their discography I'm sure I'll become a fan
I mean I hope you enjoy them but
>>
>>65654477
fishmans is shit tbf. everyone likes them because they're japanese. Otherwise they would be regarded on the same level as some shitty indie rock band
>>
>>65654642
I try not to discuss them here as much as I totally could, I just meme 'em around every once + encourage people to try them out if I think they'd be interested, but not try and force them on to everyone while also trying to get involved in other discussion, because I'm sure people get tired of my shit real quick anyways. Sorry if I've annoyed you guys at all with it.

I've never participated in this, but I'm feeling very bored so I'll try. I'll be listening to obscure hiphop from the 90s.
First up: N.O.D. - Niggaz Of Destruction
It would be a strong 8 but the last song kinda ruins it. It's 10 minutes long and has a strange almost cheerful beat.

It's a shame that the band is now very comfortable working with extensive production and varying their structures, yet they do very little with it. That said the couple moments when things don't go in their usual direction are actually vry nice (see City Talk and its occasionnal rythmic madness, Precios Joy's funk influences, or the opener Freak Jack.)

I haven't rated any albums with artists beginning with Q or U. Any recommendations?

Fushitsusha –悲愴
I really enjoyed this album, and it got me thinking more about something that comes to my mind when listening to noisy guitar music: a lot of the time with that kind of music, the most interesting sounds come not with the striking of the strings but the sounds that come after that (whether they manifest as drones or feedback or something else), and the interplay of those sounds with the other instruments. There's a good example of this on the second track of this album, where Keiji Haino's staccato bursts of guitar playing are matched with his singing which comes in at seemingly random moments, as just a glimpse at another layer of sound. Apologies, that probably comes across as pretentious rambling.
There is, however, another technique of music in this album which first appears in the latter half of the third track. It is Keiji's more "shreddy" kind of guitar, which offers an extremely chaotic catharsis, and devolves into rumbling noise as it enters a lower register of notes.
Sometimes the music feels close and personal, like in those moments of catharsis. It can also sound distant and surreal, such as in the majority of track 4 which is a messy (in a good way) journey of rock instruments being used in a complete abstraction of what "rock music" means. This, to me, shows Keiji Haino's greatest talent, which is taking the conventional instrument that is the guitar, and transforming it into a noisy weapon of catharsis.

I really like this album. I'm not a patriotic person or anything but I guess the fact that it is a good modern album from an austrian artist gives it a plus point. Beautiful instrumentation and really emotional singing. Sadly it's a little short. I hope she will release a full album soon again, she has been releasing some random tracks lately (mostly covers) that have been great.

>knowsur - NANA WODORI
I thought this was a joke based on the album cover. I was surprised when it wasn't complete shit. But I still can't say I enjoyed it that much. Had some nice moments, the first track was really good, but then it kinda became more mediocre to me. The track "OUCHI" was pretty fun to listen to too, but this project as a whole isn't that great or interesting to me.

Though I haven't really been listening to any albums/EPs new to me in the past few days, oneothe got me to do a listenalong with him of FKA Twigs' M3LL155X which happened to be on my calendar turned chart so here's a short """review""" of it.

FKA Twigs - M3LL155X

I'm pretty glad this was the EP I listened to after taking a break from music new to me cause this was very solid. Excellent production and great vocals on this. My problem with it is that I didn't care for the songwriting at times though that didn't bring down the rest of the EP.

There were several things that really made me like the prod on here. There was of course the experimental nature of the stuff (haha avant). The cold and robotic atmosphere of the prod was definitely fantastic to me. The audio panning was very cool and I love me some good audio panning so that stuff was a highlight.

I like Twigs' vocals. Very sexy stuff. This EP was very erotic and Twigs' voice and the things she was saying were a huge part of why.

Like I said though, I didn't like the songwriting at times. I wish I could explain more but really all I can say is that some melodies don't appeal to me. I can't really say anything that wouldn't make me look like an idiot or something but that's how it is. For the most part though, I enjoyed this EP a lot.

To sum things up:

NOW HOLD THAT POSE FOR ME. 4/5.
