Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.

Also, friendly side note:

Anyone posting their gear here has made a decision (either consciously or unconsciously) that playing guitar is nothing more than a meaningless hobby, something along the lines of stamp or coin collecting. Their uninformed opinions and amateur advice are firmly rooted in this unserious mindset, music being secondary to the compulsion to accumulate and publicly display their "enviable" possessions.

4chan is considered poison by most mature adults and is rightly shunned publicly for its immature, juvenile, and sometimes vile content. Lorde and the bassist from DIIV immediately spring to mind, both being heavily criticized for posting on 4chan and for their seeming willingness to be connected publicly to /mu/. No one with any real goals or aspirations would risk being contaminated with an association to this website, thus no serious musician would chance being recognized by posting their gear here. The only people who would be willing to subject themselves to this possibility would be the kind of hopeless, self-defeating troglodytes that routinely post on 4chan because they know they don't have any other options and nothing better (or more important) to do with their time. If you're posting on this site then you should be very familiar and thoroughly acquainted with this standard model 4chan user. There's no deliberate or pragmatic pursuit of knowledge or skill in these threads, just inane, unending circle jerking around gear, attention whoring, and fishing for replies.

For example: Aussiefag has been here for well over two years accomplishing absolutely nothing except for *getting some attention for himself*. The sad truth is that he has nothing else, this is his legacy: replying to other losers in /gg/ threads because his life is obviously devoid of any other social interaction.

If your goal is to wind up like this then posting gear here ad nauseum and avoiding actual musical discussion is definitely a good place to start.

Carry on.

I'm sorry.
So if I can give quick advice, google it.
Wanna hear it from here, then... you have to adjust the tension of the springs and the strings so it's the same and the trem stays in place when not being used.
Basically, screw or unscrew the plate that holds the springs, tune guitar, check if it's horizontal, repeat process until horizontal.

Another anon here, is it a natural aged finish or is it the "tv white" manufacturers use?
They used to produce a light yellowish tint in the black and white tv era because actual white would be too bright for cameras, and the "tv white" yellowish tint would appear white but not extremely bright. Which is the color we now get just for fun.
Also dunno if you edited the pic contrast, tone, balance, etc. but it looks fucking sexy in there.

Personally I don't see the point of 7 strings unless it's for special chords or because you play in like different bands and it's easier to have one guitar you can use with their tunnings instead of one for each.
I mean, even bands now that used to play with 7s just tune 6s into standard B and forget about the high E.
I fail to see the point of 8, I haven't seen anything creative done with them that made me say "ah yeah, that totally couldn't have been made without an 8".

That's my only guitar, been playing for two years, about at least 2-3 hours a day. I don't think it's the climate, my friend two streets down has a cheap harley benton with an unadjustable bridge and it's fine. I sweat a lot, and strings usually last about two weeks.

>>65487545
>For example: Aussiefag has been here for well over two years accomplishing absolutely nothing except for *getting some attention for himself*.
iirc he worked with Bolt Thrower/Portal recently (or I'm getting him confused with someone else). I wouldn't say that's accomplishing nothing.

>>65488497
I want one, for weirder experimental/technical stuff, and solo playing, since you get the bass range and guitar range. Could be interesting with a looper too, or the EHX freeze.

>>65488590
>even bands now that used to play with 7s just tune 6s into standard B and forget about the high E.
Obscura/Spawn of Possession/Behemoth/Gorguts all use sevens and make use of every string.

>>65488598
You don't, wrapping your hand around the neck is terrible technique and you shouldn't do it.

Here it is, kids: 7, 8, and 9 string guitars are the result of kids playing in their bedrooms for years and years all alone. The poor kid in this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osaqzYuoNr4 [Embed] ) overly technical "playing" is unfortunately just a compensation for the lack of a bass player. It's sad because the point of music is communication and the most enjoyable form of this communication is a concert (where people gather to share the musical experience). The only people who'd be interested in this kind of guitar wankery are other isolated bedroom-stuck 7, 8, and 9 string guitar troglodytes, so it's YouTube and the bedroom again, and MOM WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY HOT POCKETS?!?

Seriously though, it's a symptom of extreme social detachment, and goes right along with a lot of other unhealthy things like playing video games as an adult, masturbating to internet porn, etc. You'll also notice all these bedroom "pastimes" require a good bit of rapid hand/finger movement.

Playing music shouldn't be the equivalent of mashing buttons on a video game controller or furiously jacking your tiny dick, which is obviously what 8 and 9 string guitar players believe.

Ignoring that "I live from youtube" youtubers make me puke, especially rob scallon and his friends, I'd say that what he plays only makes sense if you busk in the street (which is exactly what it sounds like in that video).
If I wasn't in the street, I'd just leave the lows to the bass, have a rhythm guitar and one guitar for leads. It'd separate the notes better by channel and tone and give more clarity to the recording.
That's just my opinion and I'm just a random 360 no periscope player in an asian caricature forum.

Luc Lemay uses a 7 in some songs, but not all of them, and his second live gig guitarist uses a 6, not only a 6 but a fucking SG, so it's not even the common superstrat with 24 frets and fender scale.

Also, noticing your reply to the opener troll
>iirc he worked with Bolt Thrower/Portal recently
Holy shit, Aussie, can you confirm? I'm so much into both bands I would fangirl over you and ask you some stuff about Portal which I'm interested about.

True, tv yellow is too yellow, but you never know from pictures until you see them irl because of the color balance and saturation done by the camera or photographer.
Also, I had no idea, I thought malmsteen's was a tv yellow... although I guess it makes sense it's an aged white since he got a white one (iirc) due to his heroe, ritchie blackmore, playing one like that.
Cool trivia m8. So then, is yours a malmsteen model then? knowing that you have another fender signature I guess it wouldn't be unexpected.
>>
>>65488777
they have uses other than basslines and melodies on the same instrument. again i use it to play cooler chords. and in metal it alows you to have super low chugs and high solos on the same instrument.

the extended range lends its self to creative players.
>>
>>65488871
Yeah you pretty much hit the nail on the head with the malmsteen & Blackmore trivia, it isn't a malmsteen model no, it's a Made in Japan 72 reissue, 144 released in America and Europe otherwise it's a Japanese domestic market model. I didn't get the kurt cobain sig because it was his signature guitar, hadn't actually seen a fender mustang at that point (was just getting into guitar) I just really enjoyed the short scale and versatile tones.
>>
>>65488777
Now that we're shitposting, I just wanna say that extended scales and other shit have been -through all history- a meme that doesn't accomplish much besides one or two good exponents.
Even fucking piano, other than rachmaninoff and a few other bitches piano hasn't been altered nor played beyond it's standard scale with success. And piano has had a long fucking history.

And I'm not against inuveishun, not trying new things, like the other time I fingered my ass to see what it felt like, BUT the video you posted further proves that it's not being used creatively, he's not doing anything impressive other than for newfags and kids just starting.

>>65488941
Well, I have nothing against extended scales, I just fail to see the point of using them for being a meme unless you're actually using them in a way that's creative. Like the examples you gave.
But those you mentioned are barely a drop in the ocean of mediocre extended range players. I quite like all the bands you mentioned, besides Behemoth, so nothing against them either.
>>
>>65488975
>otherwise it's a Japanese domestic market model
Time to save for that sweet matching headstock candy red 'stang and now add to that an aged white strat.
Thanks for the info, hopefully that one japanese store that has shit in reverb carries it.

Let me break it down for you, dummy.

ERGfag has 65 videos at this point at $777 per video. His first video was posted in 2007. That means he made **at best** $22,446 per year, ***literally*** the same as working full time at a gas station for minimum wage. ***But*** he didn't make $777 for every video because he had to build up to that point, meaning he literally worked for less than minimum wage from 2007 to 2016.

They are called True Temperamnet frets, they are supposed to make the guitar intonated to the point of perfection across the whole neck.
Kinda gimmicky IMO
>>
>>65489216
each fret is intonated separate from every other fret.

Think you have to use a specific set of string gauge for it to work but should be as close to 100% intonated as it gets if set up correctly on every fret.

When I play as low as I go (for stoner/sludge stuff) which is A, the intonation starts to be an issue, but since it's not the kind of music that cares too much about it, I never considered it. But with that in mind, doesn't it turn to be the same if the 7+ guitars are still within the Fender length?
Or are the 8 and so on a bit longer? because otherwise I doubt the As or even Gs they have in those bass and guitars in one allow for proper intonation if they are just strat scale.

>>65489166
If they only allow second hand, no problemo, I'll just wait for one to be put up, that way I won't put down so much money at once... since I'm also thinking of buying one of their white Gibson Vs (can't find any locally).

What I see fucking up many brands is if Cort-tek dies, because it would kill the production line of basically every cheap to middle tier model, and the restructuring needed to come back to production numbers at the price the market is used to might be too much for certain brands.

Devin is the bassist from DIIV and he used to trip and when his trip got connected to his identity outside of 4chan some "homiphobic" posts that he'd made got attention. He almost had to leave the band.

Two things:

Do you guys write music with lyrics? If so what's your process like. I'm all over the place right now and having trouble getting things together. Do you start with lyrics? What part of the song do you write first? etc.

2. I'm thinking about picking up a classical guitar this weekend, any suggestions? Obviously I'm planning on trying out a bunch but if you guys have a solid place to start that would be appreciated

I fill up 3 pages of sorta kinda lyrics on my theme, then I read over them over the rest of the week and highlight stuff I like. Then I put the lyrics away for a couple days. Then I try to write a song and melody on that, or try to apply whatever musical idea I had previously that'd fit.

Works okay

Guys I've been playing guitar for 10 years now but everyone I play with is simply better than me. It's like everyone can solo and shit. And here I am playing a fucking minor pentatonic and still missing half the notes because I'm out of key again. I really really really want to improve on this point. I can figure out the notes but it takes me a couple of seconds to figure that the 3rd fret on the 6th string is a G for example while playing so I just end up guessing what the next note is that I'm going to play.

are gibson sg standards versatile guitars?
>>
>>65505402
yes
>>
>>65505402
As versatile as any HH guitar. If you want real versatility, don't buy a gibson. Get something with serious switching, and more than one type of pickup. If you've got the dough for a gibson I'm sure you can afford it. Or if you've really got the versatility bug, go for a roland guitar synthesizer... They have a reputation for making people fail blind tests.
>>
>>65498734
I guess it's gonna be difficult with the timezones.
So did you write something with portal or just toured?
In any case, how does it work learning/playing their stuff?
Did they sent you tabs, or expected to learn it by ear?
Did they have any requirements over equipment to be used live and shit, or you could use your own as long as it got the tone down?
How is touring with them? favourite songs?
And how did you get the gig? I personally get them through personal recommendations but that only works locally so I'm limited to local acts and it gets kinda stale after a while. I know from a friend who does stuff with death metal bands that he simply has this circlejerk in facebook where bands know each other and talk and in the past it was rivers of gore forum.

I can't tell you immediately the notes on the fretboard unless it's in the 5th and 6th string. But what I do which works for me is to know scales perfectly across the whole fretboard for E (and by extention D and C when we downtune) I also know the mode "shapes" for different keys, so if I know Ionian for G, then I know Ionian for C, because I know where the root is for both and how the scale "looks" in that position.

So if we're playing a pop song in G major, I know I can solo over G Ionian (major) shape and E aeolian (minor), and if I overlap them together it covers basically the whole fretboard and that's simple, and if you know all your modes, instead of thinking of overlapping them I know that C lydian is there too in the G major scale, and so on.
And if it's metal, I make sure to solo only over the key of the bridge for the solo instead of trying to solo for each chord (because I'm not at that level of skill), so if the song riff is in C (because tuned in C) and we make a bridge in G, I'll solo over G. For metal I use minor, and harmonic minor, or bluez if it's a groovy metal kind of thing, so I also have to know those two other scales "shapes" and their root placement perfectly.

Think of it this way. For common stuff, there's only the major/minor scale, upon which modes are built. So knowing the major/minor across the whole fretboard gives you access to all of them. Modes help because they tell you scales in relation to the main scales, so instead of thinking about notes all across the fretboard, you just need to know the scale of the key, and from there you know the modes, and with the modes you know what "you're allowed to do" and where. This of course is for simple soloing over the main key only.
To solo over the chord being played or that dominates the bridge (like a subkey) you know that the chord becomes the dominant in that part, and you can use modes to go into another mode that also fits that chord voicing.

Last Obscura was shit, Vektor was absolutely nothing new, Katalepsy lost their production and slams, new gojira is going to suck dick a whole fucking lot (why did they ever think taking out their insane drumming is a good idea)

If I buy a Zoom Gn5 or G3x will I ever need to buy another pedal? Also which is better?
>>
>>65508560
G5n has a better overall sound, but has way fewer parameters you can change making it much less versatile than the g3x. The g3x will be the only pedal you ever need for everything BUT drive though.

Overall the zoom g5n is fine for most but kinda a disappointment if you want to do crazy shit, since the whammy can't be made to control other parameters. If you want to be able to cover keyboard territory better, or you want to have trippy feedbacking delay sounds, the g3x or a boss gt series is better. Actually the gt series is better because the pedal assign can be set to multiple parameters simultaneously.

Do you want to use it with a good amp most of the time?
>>
>>65509023
I'll look into the GT as well. I will mostly be using it on my practice amp (Fender Front man 25r) its the only amp I have right now. I'm in the market for a decent tube amp within the next year however. I'm fairly new to pedals and I'm not too interested in buying a ton of separate ones, would rather have an all inclusive unit unless I can be convinced otherwise. I'm open to suggestions.
>>
>>65509201
Well, the most valuable thing the g5n does is the amps. If you're considering using the preamps and just getting a PA speaker in the future, that'd be the best choice. If you're planning on going with a real amp, boss is probably the best choice, since it can do everything, and has high quality stompbox drives. The amp sims are a bit weak though. The zoom g3x can do a ton as well but the stompbox drives are a tad weaker.

That said I'm looking for advice on this too. The full configurability of the boss gt and the crazy quality of drives and fuzzes, versus the realer than real sound of the zoom amps is too much of a dilemma. I've been thinking of buying an older post-2007 boss gt and a zoom g5n, but I realized I'm better off waiting for zoom to get their act together and restore the features of the older zoom models to the higher quality amps. I doubt that will happen via firmware update, so it might be some years.
