Hi pals, this is a thread for experimental music discussion. To clarify: Noise, drone, electroacoustic, free improvisation, futurism, indeterminacy, musique concrete, sound collage, and all that good stuff.

What have you been listening to? What have you been making? Movie and literature recommendations, concert experiences, gear, etc. are all welcome
>>
Death Grips and AnCo mostly.
>>
been listening to a lot of death grips lately

Listening to this for the first time, I'm surprised that I actually find it kind of enjoyable.

This, kek.
The average /mu/ "experimental music" fan's total ignorance and lack of familiarity with the development of "experimental music" and where it is at the moment is hilarious. Dudes are totally out of their element.

The seeds of legitimate discussion have been planted in this thread and you're bitching about the general description instead of furthering the conversation because you're the ignorant faggot you're bitching about faggot.

Our previous thread was very enjoyable and plenty of productive discussion came out from it. You are preventing that from repeating.

>legitimate discussion
>le look at me, I'm le experimental man, I listen to onkyo-kei and harsh noise XD what did you think of Merzman's latest?!
Literally not a remote shred of legitimate music discussion in this thread. Not that there is anywhere on /mu/, but it's just a lot funnier here.
>>
>>65406319
There is no legitimate discussion to be had here.
If I attempted to engage in it I would get no replies as my interests in "experimental music" don't overlap much with the entry-level RYMcore, /daily/core and various meme music garbage that gets (badly, very badly) discussed on this board.
What are you expecting me to talk about, Sachiko M, Keiji Haino and Vomir? Get the fuck out of there.
>>
>>65406397
No discussion happened in the last thread. People spent more time bitching about the thread and then bitching about the people bitching about the thread than they did discussing music.
Nobody here has anything substantial to say on any of this music.

>somewhere between Harsh Noise and Free Impro
>Harsh Noise
>Free Impro

two movements which require an acute and intimate familiarity with one's chosen performing and recording setup, two movements which require a massive amount of practice, thought and focus and a very intuitive and idiosyncratic relationship with sound and performance in order to result in recordings with even the tiniest level of depth, dimension or character to them.
also two movements which attract a large amount of dabblers too lazy and ignorant to put in the time and effort to create anything of worth, instead falling back on the often abstract nature of the music produced within these genres in order to justify their own dismal and banal output, which certainly seems to be the case here.

digging this
As far as my knowledge of EAI goes, you can either go with 2 sides of the profile: jazz or electronic.
jazz edge: Supersilent Mnemonist, Formanex, Kontakta
electronic edge: Kassel Jaeger, Gunter Schneider, Eric Glick Rieman, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Guiseppe Ielasi and Howard Stelzer's Night Life is an interesting record. Plus, Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet have an amazing collab album named Air Supply, strongly reccomend

Experimental is like electronic, a means not a genre or specific style. There is no ''experimental'' genre, only different levels of experimentation in different genres.

i would say that these genres have less to do with essential albums and more to do with overall ideology relative to any artist's experimentation. If you want a real history of "experimental music", read about artists or eras of artists who experiment with music.

Maybe start with a history of chance music through the 20th century, that's an interesting area. Read Music 109 by Alvin Lucier.

You're going to have to work on your expression of reason there pal/gal. I was referring to charts for people that want to get into some experimental genre whatever. Or we could just just send them to rym so they can fit into the general avant-teen meme.

>Stop trying to force a general. Look at what the thread's like already.
there were two /experimental/ threads in the last few days and something related to a thread on 4chan isn't to his liking;
>This board is full of garbage memery and so is its community. Come back in a week and just make an experimental thread, not and /experimental/ thread.
Will the board not be full of garbage memery in a week ? Why must we wait a week and what's wrong with cataloging a thread with a certain tag ?
>>
>>65411938
You're being pretentious and evading the point because you just want to keep the thread up. Whatever, keep that delusion that I've posted more than once in this thread. I'm guessing your one of the ones in the last one that was whining about metaposters screwing up the posting quality while contributing nothing but a whining reply and then bumping with a random word.

>>65411938
>there were two /experimental/ threads in the last few days

Last few hours. It hasn't even been a day since the last one.

>Isn't to his liking

Are you retarded? I'm just sick of coming here to fucking ironic Death Grips memery on an experimental thread. Do you really think that's quality posting? That and YT links to gachimuchi? Have you even read this thread?

>Will the board not be full of garbage memery in a week?

No, but that'll give enough time to where discussion isn't as stale as a fucking rock and space out between shitty threads.

>>65411938
>what's wrong with cataloging a thread with a certain tag?

Because the whole reason these threads are shit now is because it's been a general. Don't pretend this isn't an attempt at extending /noise/. In a general, the same sort of posters are going to be encouraged to just spam links to bump the thread without any other discussion, and priority will be on keeping it alive instead of anything else. The mindset that comes with a general after enough time is to turn it into a circlejerk, which, despite us promising ourselves two years ago that it wouldn't happen, still happened with /noise/. Just an untagged thread will erase the shit that's been branded onto the general and instead encourage decent discussion. Not difficult. Give it time.
>>
For the sake of something more substantive, what has come out in the last few years that YOU think is experimental/or avant garde? Not some kind of EAI or free improv stuff which is now way over a decade old, but like stuff that nobody else is really doing that could be considered ahead of its time.
>>
>>65412090
Ok, I get what you're getting at. Just two questions:

1.Why are you still on /mu/ ?
2.Where else can I talk about experimental music ?
>>
>>65412387
nothing rings a bell, but seconding
>>
>>65412090
>Don't pretend this isn't an attempt at extending /noise/
not everything is about that general, retard. Calm down and realize that fucking unty started this shit, not /noise/
>>
>>65412387
Maybe not groundbreaking but still interesting to me is the rock duo "Regler" which tries to reinterpret different kinds of genres with a traditional rock lineup. I have yet to check out most of their work but their "harsh noise wall" was rather impressive executed. Here's what Vomir wrote in the liner notes:
"One day I received an email from Mattin. We've been in touch before, though we never met, but his written, performed and recorded work had always a special interest on me for so long now. The mail presented the work you have now in your hands. It said: 'I have a project with Anders from Brainbombs, in which we set up rules and try to do different genres of music with rock instruments. We have done a recording regel #4 (harsh noise wall)'.
Boom.
In my head.
I knew other recordings by REGLER released on Turgid Animal and 8mm. Those already got me hooked. But now, here was the HNW genre. And this genre is very important to me. It is my core. And now we get Hardcore Wall.
