What do yall think
>>
>>65369510
>humbuckers on a strat
why?
>>
So...only reason I can think for not getting one of these is what a hassle setting up the intonation all over again every single time i want to change the tunings for the 3rd bridge harmonics. kinda think it will be worth it though?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QytsbQVVuTM
>>
>>65369510
I'd put it in my butt
>>
>>65369585
You only have to set the bridge up once. Also, does anyone have a closeup of a jazzmaster switch for reference? I realized I actually have a few options in terns of how I shape the holes for these suckers. Even better, if someone has a caliper and a jazzmaster...
>>
>>65369585

Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.
>>
>>65369437

This is taking longer than i expected. Also not having a work bench fucking sucks
>>
>>65369693
Why are you mad?
>>
>>65369684
Yeah at some points it just sounds like a badly setup chorus, doesn't seem really worth the hassle to me.
>>
>>65369746

Fuck forgot pic
>>
>>65369653
hmmm, what makes you say that? user reviews seem to indicate that any setup for infront of the bridge intonation is gonna be effected by behind the bridge settings. or maybe i was just reading speculation.
>>
>>65369684
sounds great to me?
>>
>>65369746
Suck it up soldier. Or, a kitchen countertop van suffice.

So, I've realized the jazzmaster switches are sight to the inner perimeter of the switch, no extra room. However I think it could be a cool effect, as well as giving me more room for error, to cut it slightly larger so that the chrome of the switches shows. While that'd give me some wiggle room, it'd also necessitate very sharp work to look good. Thoughts?
>>
>>65369437
you faggot i was gonna do harry potter edition
>>
>>65369804
Probably speculation. I see no reason the intonation should change. They are probably misinterpreting how the system works.
>>
>>65369887
I'll have to ask the seller.

This is pretty great too as a six string. personally i love the 12 string sounds, but this one has an interesting fretboard too.

dunno, the prices have nearly doubled with the new models. i'm looking at buying secondhand one of the older 12 string models right now. the new ones look pretty great though. the more i think about the weird Harmonic Isolator instrument the more I kinda prefer it though? Don't know how often the older cheaper models will show up secondhand.

When changing strings on a floyd rose, there's no problem with going one at a time, right? I don't have a trem stopper nor do I have any way to stabilize the bridge, so changing one string at a time is really my only option.

It looks like you could put anything you want there, but the easiest to install is generally a bigsby type. They're made for gentle vibrato, you can't dive bomb with them. Another hard to mess up type is the jaguar trem. It requires body routing though.

>>65373316
Here is a little a/b clip of the proto as Metallik Resonator with ribbon synth into it. First is the ribbon synth direct into interface, then through mic'd Metallik Resonator.

There are no contact mics on the sheet metal in this clyp, but you can still hear that great reverb that it has

https://clyp.it/j01n4j4q
>>
>>65373316
I toyed with the idea of bolting the wooden nub directly to the sheet, but it seems to transfer the sound just as effectively when it's just barely pressed against the surface.

The position was chosen by the completely scientific and not at all arbitrary method of "measure 2/3'ds of the way across, then back off two inches."
>>
>>65373672
And here is the ribbon synth into the sheet metal as plate reverb. no wet/dry blend this is all wet from contact mic.

>>
>>65373709
I was ending up attaching the resonator to a gong, so i had to choose a flat section of it. Using the sheet metal as plate reverb it sounds best mounted dead center.

I'm using a 50 watt amp to drive this surface transducer, which is about perfect for getting a 22" gong to resonate and be a loud amp....on this 26 gauge sheet metal it would set it right the fuck off haha. Turned out to sound pretty nice on its own, it blooms really pretty and when pushed you get that thunder sound of shaking sheet metal. Here's that ribbon synth into it again, i kinda slide around so you can hear how different frequencies excite it. I tried to keep it from going nuts till the end. I'm playing The Persephone ribbon synth into it.

Love them to death.
Incredibly comfy, versatile, good looking in many configurations and funny/dumb in many others, easy to mod, easy to take care, trem is better than cheap licensed FRs, non trem versions are solid af, well built, etc.
Also, it's such a common tool, even if seen as a metal to buttrock tier guitar, I see it used by every kind of band in every kind of genre.
I think people that play them live just switch to other brands one they start making an image of themselves and want something that fits the mold.

>>
>>65372999

>>
>>65374845
well, i didnt know what to expect, and I'm just going off the Eowave Metallik Resonator which i cant afford at $900. I figured out what brand resonator they used, and for the size Gong I was gonna use they also used a 50 watt amp.

Just to see if mounting location made much difference i proto on a piece if sheet metal. The issue with this 26gauge sheet metal, is quite thin compared to the gong, so when the resonator gets to pumping signal it starts to physically rattling the sheet metal haha. It's actually a pretty cool effect, distortion if you will. I bought two of the 50 watt resonators to build a couple different sized Metallik Resonator amps with. Im using a 50 watt solid state amp with the 22" gong and it gets way louder than I'll ever need, so no problems there. If I decided to keep using the sheet metal as a plate reverb, which sounds pretty awesome quite frankly, I'd look into a smaller and cheaper surface transducer along with a lower watt amp to drive it. For under a $100 bucks you can build a lo-fi plate reverb...not bad!

Clipping the material, rad. I've been wanting to build myself a tube amp and know diving into the most complicated build without practice is a bad idea. Could be a good excuse to whip up bare bones model that wouldn't just sit on a shelf later.
>>
>>65376035
Yeah, it sounds neat and is its own thing, but nothing like the gong when it gets to resonating...all sorts of color with the gong, just incredible. There isn't much color to a piece of sheet metal, but I was really happy with how well using it as a plate reverb turned out...havnt gotten around to sourcing a cheap resonator for it, or found an appropriate amp. I bought two Pyle 50 watt stereo amps with three 1/4" inputs for the Metallik Resonators, I think they were only $40 apiece.

Hooking contact mics to the gong is pretty nice too, real unique sound.

actually the day the resonators got in, I still didn't have the gong yet or that sheet metal, so i found some scrap sheet metal in the garage and hooked it up. Turned out to sound pretty awesome, much thicker piece of metal than the sheet metal. I recorded it with a Placid Audio Carbonphone mic, so that added some additional filtering to the sound but you can hear it bloom all metallic. It was a lot of fun hooking the resonator up to other material too to use, like wood etc. Some literal wood tonez. anyways here's that first run

I picked up the CG101. (I'm the guy from the last thread asking for advice on classical guitars)

Pretty good condition but it looks like the heel cracked at some point but was repaired. I measured the string action at the 12th fret, checked out pretty well, and the neck and body of the guitar were straight.

Been playing it for the last hour or so, and the fretboard is really wide. I mean I expected this, but the guitar I'm most used to is my Mustang, which has a narrow fretboard.

I'm still getting used to it but I like the CG101 so far.

Pick ups are different obviously, and the electronics too.
The SG 400 has epi alnicos, which I'm not sure how hot they are but they push well the overdrive, maybe it's their cheap construction but they are hot/dirty not in a bad way, just not that tame I guess. I wouldn't necessarily change them unless I was very picky, but a DP100 and PAF set would work wonders I bet.
The 490s in the Faded and Standard Gibson SG are a bit more clear, I guess maybe it's the output and better wiring.
The Gibson pots work well, but since they are passive they have the common drop off cliffs, first going from 10 to 8 it's nice calm, lower than 8 it starts to steal a lot of highs, and then at 4 or so it drops completely.
The SG 400s are sort of the same deal being passive too and I'm not sure if the pots are the same spec wise, but the drop is greater and there's not much you can do other than 10 or drop it somewhere basically.

>>65379251
For SGs? ESP LTD has the Viper but it's kinda funky looking and the cheap versions are absolute shit imo. The SG 400 and Standard options of Epiphone are well priced and a good deal.

That'd be cool.

I have no name leather and no name nylon or whatever it is that's not leather.
I only care about it being wide enough to not hurt my shoulder/neck.

If it's giving you a rash though, check a leather one, generic as it doesn't matter, just make sure the underside is clean, soft, and not painted or anything.

Or wash your textil one with some very hot water and some soap you know that doesn't affect you (like ph neutral bodysoap) and let it rest so that it comes off, there's maybe some chemicals or sweat or stuff kept in there that's giving you the rash.

Here's my 2010 American Standard Tele. I need to start playing it more. I usually just pick up my acoustic instead.
>>
>>65383309
You can still practice acoustically on your Tele, it's not like you have to plug it into an amp every time.
>>
>>65383356
Sounds bad though, zero sound
>>
>>65381510
It dives all right.
The thing is, the exp shape means you have a big chunk of wood under your right arm. You just have to rest your hand on it and you'll never have any problems.
In my opinion, the exp shape is the comfiest I've ever played, you'll always find the one position that'll suit you, sitting or standing.
>>
>>65376320
Don't you just push the neck forwards with the palm of your fretting hand?
>>
>>65383006
Ah, I thought you meant he traded you the bass + extra cash to you, not extra cash from you. Makes sense.
Also damn, I'm jelly, I love warwicks and would really like a corvette 5 $$ or a Thumb 5.

>>65383498
True, it's probably one of the comfiest designs along with strat types.

The V albert king played had 50s PAFs in it. The sound would not differ much from a les paul. I don't think the flying V really stand out for blues more than other humbucker guitars.
>>
V=Firebird>SG>Les Paul
>>
>>65371354
Did you refinish this guitar yourself? I like the color and I've thought about refinishing my Squier Mustang in some way but I'm not sure yet.

I wish I could find a replacement pickguard as well but no one makes the right size for them.

>>65383225
Candy apple red like that anon's mustang is at least more interesting than the original red. But I agree, I think for stock colors I like olympic white best. In the 70s the sunburst was pretty cool.

I don't like Gibsons though, scale's too short, price too high, and overall ergonomics are not adequate for me.

guys i have a concert in like 3 hours, playing this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8-tXG8KrWs
i can't make the solo sound right, i always miss notes or sound waaaaaaay too sloppy.
tips for improving?
>>
>>65384432
Even if you miss a few notes, you'll sound fine if you fix it by improvising a bit over the solo scale.
>>
>>65384432
actually practice instead of procrastinating

>>65384465
I did all afternoon and months before today, i just get pissed at how i hate this fucking song and literally can't seem to improve
I'm just not coordinate enough i think
>>
>>65384484
Hm well yeah it is difficult to learn songs you dislike, although doing that seems to make you a better player.

I would say throw the original solo out the window and just figure out the scale and do your own thing with it.
>>
>>65384507
wow that's really risky
I can't write solos for shit
>>
>>65384430
I agree, we all know Gibson's prices are insane and most companies have already reached and surpassed their quality level.
I'd still save the V and Firebird, they only have a couple core models and you can get one for around $1200. They feel great to me personally.
>>
Why do some people think the wood in an electric guitar makes the difference in sound? Are they just trying to rationalise post purchase?
>>
>>65384527
Then stick with the original, play a chord or something if you mess up. It's wise to practice what you'll do if you mess up a bit.
>>
>>65384659
The material of the neck can affect your playing and the weight of the wood could make it more cumbersome, but I agree that wood doesn't matter when it comes to electric tone.
>>
>>65384659
There are some ways the sum of all parts of a guitar changes the tone. However it won't be consistent. These are called "wolf tones". They vary widely based on the shape and density of parts of the guitar. It isn't possible to tune all the wolf tones of a guitar. The wolf tones interact with the fundamental noticeably, and the harmonics barely measurably.

The other thing that the wood effects is the weight. This is simpler to understand. I won't get into defining the terms resonance and sustain. But a heavier guitar has more sustain and less resonance, and a lighter guitar has more resonance and less sustain. This is a function of weight, but since a guitar isn't isolated for the player, the player can change the sustain of a guitar slightly by the way they hold it.

The species of the wood does not affect these things. The fact that people consider maple bright and mahogany dark goes to prove that the traditional tonal differences people ascribe are inaccurate. Most tonal differences are a result of different trends in fender and gibson manufacturing. For example, at around the same time fender switched from alder to ash telecasters, they also changed the pickup design. The change caused by the pickups was credited to the wood.
>>
Which usually has more output with the same DC resistance, a p90 or a single coil(magnetic pole pieces)?
>>
>>65384965
I don't know about the difference when resistance is equal, but p90s generally are wound with more resistance anyway. I'm interested in which has more output when wound the same as well.
>>

>>65384835
Basically association bias where people think that A -> B when they are both unrelated scenarios.
Interestingly I own basswood guitars mostly and I find their sustain pretty good despite being lighter.
>>
>>65385513
It seems to me single note sustain is fairly similar between light and heavy guitars, but chords ring out longer on heavy guitars. I've never been able to verify that though. If anyone's got the will to set up such an experiment like the one here, but with only one string, I'd be interested in the result.

http://youtu.be/KTKfHkHZ6qQ

Obviously there are easier ways to do this than his rig.
>>
>>65385618
>>65385513
None of this even really matters if you play through an amp, though. Not enough sustain? Buy a compressor.

Wood type matters so little, just play whatever is comfortable for you.

For the anon that wanted a Memesty without the inlays, the ebony fretboards won't have any inlays for this run. Now you only need to sell a kidney and you can own Pucci-senpai's mememachine.

>>65385618
Interesting, it would be necessary to match pickups, pickup height, strings, string gauges since they would affect too.
Lots of work for that experiment.

>>65385655
I agree, there's so much snek oil salesman going on regarding tonewoods.
>>
>>65385655
That's exactly what I think, who cares about the physical part of an electrical instrument besides for look and playability ?

>>65385677
that looks a lot like Ibanez's Galaxy Black finish, which I really like.
>>
Alder is the best tonewood

(Not really), but it has the best weight imo
>>
>>65385677
Well, if one were to conduct that experiment, you'd use the same guitar, just add weights. That's the only way to be 100% certain. I JUST HAD A GREAT IDEA.

I really like my light weight guitar. But, maybe something I want to do calls for a heavier, less resonant tone. What if I add a bolt to the back of my guitar, so I can attach and detach a 5 pound weight as needed? Sure, it's weird as fuck, but it would a pretty interesting experiment... I'm trying to think of a way now to make it so that when the weight is detached the back is flush. Also, it'd have to be very secure for this to work, but I'd want it to be quick to add and remove. Any ideas?
>>
>>65386022
You'll end up with a bolt breaking into the wood of your guitar with that much weight on it.

There exists clip ons for the head of the guitar already that add weight and "sustain" that people swear by. Whether or not they actually work, I don't know
>>
>>65386058
Those clips just change the wolf tone, they don't add sustain(overall). They can actually work if you have a particularly musical wolf tone that's choking more than one note, but that's actually pretty rare. Some p-basses have wolf notes on the 2nd lowest C, just by a coincidence of the average shape and weight of the guitar. So a lot of people put one of those on, and the wolf tone moves to somewhere less annoying.

BTW, people usually call wolf tones "dead spots" when talking about electric guitar and bass.
>>
I get going well but end up strumming a string too high, is there a method to learn your pick/string position or is it just down to practice?
Should I be looking at my finger position on the neck or down to where I'm strumming?
>>
>>65386333
not necessary, for open chords you can mute the strings you need with your thumb

Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering what the fuck a wolf tone was.
>>
>>65386333
It's worth it to practice sometimes picking in isolation. Just hold an open chord without changing it and work on picking exercises. Another good idea is to have multiple postures you're comfortable in. There's more than one right way to strum.

Be aware that when strumming anything besides an arpeggio, it's normal to not have perfect control of which strings you hit, to some degree. This is an area of guitar playing that takes time to develop. It requires precision. Certain things are simply too fast and you should rely on muting techniques. Ideally you don't need to mute to avoid hitting the strings, but a combination of muting and picking accuracy is the best policy. Bother together is better than either alone.

However, when you're doing exercises, it's easier to tell what you're doing right if you practice one at a time. I.e. hitting all the strings when practicing muting, and not muting with the left hand when practicing picking precision. As always, use a variety of exercises.
>>
>>65386443
It's the term used for string instruments. When using a bow, sustain isn't relevant, so the added resonance adds volume and changes the character. I prefer the term because electric guitar terms usually are misused. Googling dead spot gives you a bunch of forum posts, wolf tone gives you technical and scientific articles.
>>
>>65386419
>>65386476
Thanks anons, I'll try to incorporate muting into open chords where it's comfortable from now on and try focusing on precision after I've had more experience.
>>
>>65373901
It's fine but you might as well get a gibson at that point
>>
>>65386561
Without being a twat, doesn't the existence of wolf tones on an electric instrument prove that the body material DOES affect the sound in some way? So woods with different density and different body shapes could affect sustain and maybe create/eliminate wolf tones?

How different are an MT-2 and an HM-2? I would mostly use it for black metal and noise, but just for fun want a good death and thrash tone.

Why are you even bothering if you have no pride in your band and your music?
>>
>>65386875
Is that a GB-74? I've got it's little sister, the GB-34A and it's a blast.
>>
>>65386910
HM2 can sound like a soaring chainsaw and doubles as a really good distortion/heavy OD pedal.
MT-2 can sound good eventually, if you spend a lot of time dialing in a tone.
>>
>>65386661
Yeah, that's what it means... But it's very understandable HOW it affects the tone. It doesn't change the overall frequency response, and string overtones don't have enough energy to experience a noticeable notch at those frequencies. Basically, it doesn't affect the things people attribute it to. No wood is brighter or warmer, etc. The fact is it's impossible to differentiate wood species. You could say it impacts performance rather than tone, if you want to think about it that way. The same goes for the shape of the guitar.

It is possible to differentiate guitars of different weight however, whether that's because of a bigger body or a denser body. It's good to be specific about these things, but I wouldn't want someone to misinterpret the effect of these wolf tones. The weight is a far more important factor. In general wolf tones are merely an annoyance, not a significant factor for timbre.

Y'know, I should use the word timbre more often instead of tone. Pretty much that's what people are talking about here.

it's the biggest crowd we've faced yet, and we haven't actually released anything (recording will start later this month if all goes well)

>>65386945
yeah. nice bass, got it by chance trading a chink warwick a couple years ago and never looked back. the bright switch is pretty useless and i think i'll have it removed though.
>>
>>65386910
MT-2 is definitely the best for black metal, the non swedeath tones of the HM-2 are still far too bass heavy to get a good black metal tone out of.
>>
>>65387032
>we're doing it for fun, experience and exposure
>no amplifiers or sound equipment
How is that fun, a good experience or good exposure?
>all exposure is good exposure!
No, being seen as a band that couldn't afford equipment to actually play songs is not good exposure.
>>
>>65387090
playing live is fun, we've practiced a lot and we wanna do it
we got guitar amps and drums covered, i don't think the main band will let me use their bass rig but it's really not that big a deal if i have to use the PA
i'm positive it will sound good, i've done it before
>>
>>65387062
If you cut all the bass can you get a good bm tone? I like the HM-2 better than the MT-2, but if I get an HM-2 I'm just going to build a clone of a Japanese one since they are so expensive.
>>65386968

>>
So, I've realized the dream rig I want to work towards requires a full range, full response speaker or cab with enough volume to provide adequate stage sound. I've realized I don't really need perfect flat response, but the closer the better. I want to use the same speaker for bass and guitar.

In other words, I'm fucked. These things are so fucking expensive I really need to lower my standards. Does anyone have experience with anything comparable? Could a fancy enough EQ and enough time with a spectrometer and a signal generator compensate for an uneven frequency response? I know I'm nitpicking, and like I said I want to lower my standards, but I want to aim towards an ideal, however short I fall.
>>
