criminally underrated Gang Green's, 1988 album, I81B4U.
It thrash metal/hardcore/punk, only 5 songs and 15 minutes, but so good and hardly anyone remembers it.

>When will metal die?

I have thought about this often for the last several years. I believe that metal at this point is going to make it through until the collapse of nations.

1. Because metal has found so much success as a counter mainstream movement in a variety of different genres, and across multiple generations, metal succeeds beyond expectations. Although iconic legends like Dio and Lemmy have passed on, and elder gods like Sabbath and Maiden are either in their last years or nearing that time, metal has proved its ability to survive through such great losses through the generations of successors.

What we will lose in particular artists or maybe even genres, we will not lose in style or form.

2. The Internet and personal media devices have allowed for counter cultural lifestyles to become the norm. Among those lifestyles are the cultures of the metal community. Quite simply, heavy metal can no longer be subdued by global media, because of our ability to access our own tastes and interests whenever we want. This continues to proliferate interest in bands, and therefore artists will continue to sell tickets for promoters, which is the most important thing. After all metal thrives off of its community and the energy at live events.

3. Manowar's retirement may be the single most important blow to metal as a whole. All of the gods have been shaking on their mountains and in their labyrinths since the first battle hymns were written by Joey DeMaio. Although Manowar may lower their blades, in this the hour of their final ride, we must remain strong as steel.
>>
>>65269553
tldr
>>
>>65269237
never, it will actually last beyond when rock lasts, because metal is based on generally conservative leaning ideals, one of which being tradition, which will stand the test of time no matter how much else changes. There will be second wave black metal 100 years from now unless something drastic happens. Rock doesn't have the same community involvement and idealism that metal has, as
>>65269553
pointed out, hence why it's susceptible to dying, strange as it may seem. Metal isn't just a music, it's a way of life similar to that of ethnic people's. If people are still practicing paganism after the christians destroyed the vikings, then metal can last just as long.
>>
>>65269553
>3. Manowar's retirement may be the single most important blow to metal as a whole

Manowar has been shit since like 1990 you faggot. Their albums are pleb and their live performances are a disgrace to their name.

Yes, they have. They just don't sell like they did in previous times. The Devil's Blood, Satan, Manilla Road, Deathhammer, Black Magic and Christian Mistress for example; they all releases great albums.

Another point, if you need metal to be commercially popular in order to prove to yourself that it is alive and well, then you're not really immersed in the genre or scene at all. There are festivals with extreme bands performing all over the world all of the time. You can go to one of them and watch any number of bands from Slayer, Satan, Nuclear Assault, Autopsy, Samael, you name it, they're there. You can turn on a Spotify channel and listen to hundreds of extreme metal bands all day, every day, every week of the year.

You know who didn't have this luxury? People from the '90s, and yet the '90s was one of the most inventive and eclectic periods for real metal. The types of bars where extreme death metal and thrash metal boomed into existence are in every major city across the United States. Go to one. Follow your local music venues. Look at fliers for bands that are playing in your area.

Real metal is far from dead. We are still enjoying a very glorious renascence.

Bölzer experiment in disorganized slowed black/death/heavy metal with mixed-in weirdo alternative rock. Weirdo alternative rock has existed since early rock bands made a name for themselves by being odd. The problem is that it doesn’t connect to form an impression, only a sense of instrumentalism.

June 2nd: Vorum and Degial (free)
7th - Seprevation (free)
8th - Nervosa (free)
10th - Download Festival
17th - Hellfest
24th - Cattle Decapitation and Ingested
25th - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
30th - Dopethrone and Gurt
2nd July - Death to Cancer Fest 2
6th - Sleep and Conan
16th - Necrohammer Deathfest (all day thing with a few of my mates band and some cult underground ones)
24th - Metal days

Rest of the year is starting to take shape as well: Taake, Vektor, Stream of Passion a few times, Mayhem, stars of the lid, haemorrage, forced system fest, akercocke, diamond head, angelcorpse, steel panther, shape of despair all at some point.

Honestly I never have any money left at the end of the month though!

I just listened to Slipknot's debut album and what the fuck was that?

This isn't nu-metal as I remember it. There's no whining clear vocals and chuggy jumpdafuckup breakdowns. There's dynamics, variation, actual aggression, interesting ideas and sounds that create a strong atmosphere and there's even some nice riffs and some humor. I'm posting Famine because I'm pretty sure that if he were from Iowa instead of France he would have come up with something very similar.

What went wrong?

Why did it devolve into cheap emotional bullshit with dumb riffs for teenagers?

Just booked tickets for this because I was fucking jealous of your schedule. Hellfest looks killer this year. Dopethrone and Gurt will be good too. Gurt were great fun at Desertfest. Also Stars of the Lid, yes mate.

Yeah, I missed sleep at desertfest last year as the tickets for the Sunday sold out so as soon as this was announced I had to go.

Got that same shirt from Sunn last year, not many more bands im more excited for this summer than them again at Hellfest. Will have to wear this shirt the sabbath days at Hellfest and download!

Yep, I missed Desertfest last year because I'm northern and poor. Really enjoyed this years though and pretty excited to catch Sleep now, and Conan again.

I'm very jealous about that shirt. I've never seen Sunn live so they're pretty high on my bucket list.

Demilich, Cosmic Atrophy, Blood Incantation, Fabricant, Nucleus, Capharnaum, Timeghoul
>>
>>65272660
To be fair I only did the Sunday of this year's. Me and my brother had at least eight drinks each and did in eight spliffs so half the time I kept reading the app and the time wrong and going to the wrong venue. Ended up missing all of wizard and most of Oranssi pazuzu and elder, but got to get all of Wo fat in, even if we were pretty much just eyes half open propped up a wall by that point. Trouble, bast, monolord, what we saw of elder, wo fat and stinking lizaveta were all great though.
>>
Yeah, I get that, I was running between the venues Sunday night because of clashes. Ended up being worth it though because Elder, Bloody Ceremony, and E Wiz were all highlights of the weekend.

The clashes all weekend were a shame though because I would've loved to catch Monarch, Slomatics, Beastmaker, Oranssi Pazuzu, Wo Fat, etc too but hey, just the nature of festivals. Would love to be heading to Temples at the end of the week if it were possible.
>>
>>65272744
Same, really want to see Pissgrave. But I'm pleased Degial and vorum are playing for free in London on Thursday even if it's a trek, and going to Oslo in November for Mayhem, so it's another expense I'm giving a miss.
>>

I'm talking gimmicky in the sense of bands that coast on being different rather than quality, regardless if the band is good or bad.

Once a musical genre is over 30 years old it will most likely never die because there will always be faggots who cannot let go of their youth, and faggots who capitalize on retro-waves and nostalgia.

Also, it'll never stop being enjoyable to listen to, so even if people stop making metal, people won't stop listening to the already produced material.

Even in the mid to late 90s metal didn't die when it was far removed from the mainstream, and even continued reinventing itself (see the new developments in the more extreme forms of metal during that time), and now the internet has made metal incredibly more popular, it has pretty much guaranteed that metal will never stop existing for basically as long as civilization as we know continues (unless maybe something crazy happens like aliens taking over the Earth and banning metal).

The fact that so many books still name the Metallica as “the greatest or most significant or most influential” metal band ever only tells you how far metal music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Metal critics are still blinded by commercial success. Metallica sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Metal critics are often totally ignorant of the Metal music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Metallica did anything worthy of being saved.
