x japan releasing their first album since 1996 in october

>"I want to bring back the old X sound. Too often is the modern visual kei scene focused on style over substance and too focused on the irrelevant details over the greater picture. It's time we show other bands what their roots really are. Visual Kei was hijacked by stylists who make music, no longer is it for musicians who wear style. We're bringing back the metal, the speed, the power, the passion in Visual Kei."
>>

>We're bringing back the metal, the speed, the power, the passion in Visual Kei.
Doubt it, re-union albums are never good. Admirable that he sees modern VK for the pansy flower faggotry that it is though.
>>
>>65103785
>Admirable that he sees modern VK for the pansy flower faggotry that it is though.

Don't buy into Yoshiki's bullshit, he's the sole reason visual kei turned into corporate flower faggotry in the first place by telling random indie metal/indie rock bands to split up and then forming "super groups" out of the best members from these bands, and then put them on big labels to shill them. Yoshiki, and Kamijo from Versailles literally ghost-write most of the flower metal and pussy rock you hear from the modern VK, effectively ruining the genre since the old thrash/power/speed sound effectively died, and then has the balls to pretend that he had nothing to do with it.

Yoshiki killed visual kei because he's a moneyhungry slanty-eyed jew who wants his shekels and now is just raising publicity by saying "w-we want to save visual kei".

>>1 guy wrote music for 10 bands
>"most of these bands can't write songs"
>"they script your between-song banter so you don't sound like an idiot"
>"A typical visual kei performer is an ex-bosozoku or ex-chinpira, a high-school drop out"
>"In the beginning, one of the things I found the most ironic, was these band members: these very tough-talking street guys, playing these very femme-y, androgynous roles which were straight out of a shojo manga"
>"the label owner sets his sights on the best members from 3 or 4 small, go-nowhere bands, and tries to persuade them to leave their bands and form a super-band"
>"I can give you an example l:DIR EN GREY is made up of members from a few bands"
>""'Roadie chains' are another interesting phenomenon of Visual Kei! Here's one example: KOROYUME was a band, their roadies went on to form dir en grey, which had the same image! And Dir en Grey's roadies formed a band called THE GAZETTE. Another example. . .MALICE MIZER's roadie was named Kamijo(the vocalist for versailles) - a year later, he was in his own band called LAREIME, which looked and sounded like MALICE MIZER. In fact, he started a label called ARTIST'S SOCIETY, and all the bands on that label sound like MALICE MIZER (because he's the producer - he wrote all the music!)"
>""SATOH-SAN: There's lots of stories about musicians prostituting themselves. TDR:"You mean prostitute as in host club? Or as in, they got an ad in the back of gay pornos in the OUTCALL MASSAGE section? SATOH-SAN: Well, six of one, half a dozen the other"
>Yoshiki from x-japan started all of this

You'll also notice that most random j-power bands just spring up randomly out of no where and within the first year of forming they somehow have the money and funds for expensive music videos, and are signed by the labels most often accused guilty of ghost-writing.

The modern Visual Kei scene is a fraud.

Black metal, like all european metal, is aesthetically stagnant. It's what happens when Power Metal turns 14 and becomes edgy.

Compare the aesthetics of US metal genres like sludge, stoner, grunge, death, etc to european genres like melodic death, power and black metal and it becomes apparent that europe is infantile, sissified and immature.

Power and black are similar in that both have artists and fans alike dressing up in retarded costumes, wielding LARP weapons and indulging in escapism. Lyrical content is also very similar same old infantile autistic escapism, but now 666 times more edgy.

You can tell that black metal is infantile also by the fact that the movement was not politically or socially motivated, it was just a bunch of autists getting together and being edgy.

You only started getting politically driven black metal bands later on, and Varg only came up with his neo-pagan beliefs while in prison, growing more and more autistic from lack of human contact.
He was simply an edgy teenager that got locked up and then came up with his nazi ideology because being edgy wasn't cool anymore. Black metal in a nutshell

Everything that ruined metal is documented in this one album. This album paints a picture of Animal Collective shirt wearing "professional" photographers heading to Starbucks after smoking too much K2 incense while watching a marathon of Oprah and The Big Bang Theory. It's this single piece of hippy bafoonery that sapped all the creativity out of metal by showing people that they too can make money by playing groove based indie rock with pseudo-intellectual lyrics and throwing naturalist bullshit on t-shirts. It is the prototype for The Sword.

Lyrically, everything that's wrong about metal now is found here. Joe Duplantier in all his LSD induced wisdom thought that, instead of coming up with something interesting to talk about, the mundane themes about the "dying whales" would resonate more with the hipster culture of mainstream America and, unfortunately, he was right. This was one of the key elements that were needed to allow smug suburban youth and pot smoking drum circle dwellers to relate with the stupidity of Gojira. All of these things are best exemplified in the after school special-isms of Ocean Planet and the cheap emotional appeals of Flying Whales and Global Warming. The half-assed poetry attempts suggests not a lot of time was spent on them, and feels more like something Nirvana would have come up with. The change to a more "eco-friendly" appearance in promo pics suggest about as much. These lyrics would make bands in the future reduce themselves to writing about mundane topics (environmentalism, mother nature) and shouting a bunch of faux-poetic words that mean nothing. It's just vague prose to "get people in touch with their earthen roots", like the indie or folk punk songs of the day.
>>
>>65105678
Ivan Moody is such a doucherocket.
>>
This is barely metal aside from some guitar playing techniques. Gojira is really just groove based indie rock in how the focus is placed on sparse 2 note rhythm riffs being played for a "mellowing" grunge derived feel that will allow suburban kids to "get zen to it". It is an urbanized version of drinking bongwater in your semi-homeless neighbor's hammock. By removing all the intellectual aspects out of metal and dumbing it all down to a series of chugga chugga noises and pick scrapes, Gojira remove any heaviness that could be found in Bolt Thrower's groove riffs, further lowering the role of the guitar into being background noise to allow for Duplantier's bird squawking noises ("vocals") to take the forefront. Contrary to Duplantier's "I Hate Alternative Music" shirt he would often sport at this time, the indie-isms in the verse of lead single "Flying Whales" suggest an attempt to also appeal to the whine rock scene of the day since it was the most marketable guitar oriented music they could dress up as metal at that time.

When the home videos are more memorable for the political message than the music, you know this band wasn't good. Unfortunately, liberal pandering and some whale design t-shirts were all it took to sell this "cool" album about "environmentally conscious topics" to the impressionable morons of the day. The birthplace for Mastodon rests in this album.

You know this "one 40 minute death metal song" is going to be bad just from the very beginning. Immediately, you are slammed with a down tuned Korn riff reminiscent of later day Roadrunner Records angst rock, followed by a clean break that is made "heavy" by turning the distortion pedal on again in a manner eerily reminiscent of 2000s angst-y soft-heavy whine rock. It then goes back to that one Korn riff. This is not going to be a good album, but you throw in the Dan Swanö namesake and "progressive/forward thinking" marketing banter and you could fool the masses into believing this is the best thing since sliced bread.

As with most concept albums, the concept to this album is pretty stupid. It feels like what would happen if Children of Men were turned into a Marvel comic: some dystopian future that seems almost entirely ripped off from the novel. Same themes, same story, except with what I assume are "religious" allusions with the child at the center of this story being a Jesus equivalent. Of course, none of this matters since the music relays none of this imagery and comes off like a 40 minute medley that acts as a garbage plate of ideas that were too terrible to even be featured on an album as bad as the Purgatory Afterglow LP than an actual "song".
>>
>>65106419
For starters, none of the music here is organized or structured in any meaningful way, and it's through sheer randomness that this album has falsely attained the "progressive" tag. From the already mentioned Korn-y beginning, we go to "part 2" of this 10 part song, with no real discernible differences between any of the parts. Dan Swanö belts out his clumsily pieced together tale with the faux-growls that would later influence metalcore, whiny clean vocals, and off putting Sisters of Mercy parodying goth crooning (made worse than it already was on previous goth crowd pandering tune Sacrificed). The music is nothing more than a melange of groove metal crap, cheerful mellow-deaf like the "heavy" parts from Amorphis' Elegy, clean whiny indie rock, and worst of all - the "pretending to be extreme" parts. During these parts fast drums play over what sounds like The Somberlain era Dissection playing their favorite parts from old Capcom video games. The music is stylistically fragmented as already mentioned, but it's also emotionally schizophrenic, randomly going from cheerful and cute little pleasant sounds to a roaring ruckus of faux-aggression going into a Rush derivative section and everything in between. That's not progressive, it's random and nonsensical. This album fails on every level, not really knowing what it wants to accomplish and jumping between parts at random that suggests a group of guys sat in a room and pasted together random parts with no rhyme or reason. If you want progressive music that actually has lasting value, conviction, and doesn't pretend by hiding uneventful crap in a 40 minute display of randomness, pick up the second Atheist album. If you were looking for good Swedish death metal instead, skip Edge of Sanity (and pretty much anything on Black Mark that's not Bathory) altogether and pick up the first Dismember and Entombed albums.
>>
>>65106419
This is just an over glorified drink coaster that's more focus group "how will we make people think Edge of Sanity is forward thinking, etc." derived product than the byproduct of artistic intent. Avoid.

They're just so flamboyant, and in a way that seems like a pop version of black metal from music to aesthetics.

That said, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia is impressively progressive, but it's just not something I personally enjoy listening to.

Listen and decide for yourself, earlier albums may also be worth a listen.

Mikael can write good acoustic parts, but his attempts at death metal suck, the riffs lack any power or ferocity feeling closer to 70's hard rock than Swedish death metal.I know he's trying to go for a dynamic sound in which the harder death metal parts feel even more sinister when contrasted to the acoustic and blues moments, but that's just a lazy attempt at cashing in on the death metal scene. All in all it's pretty boring but is their best attempt, their first two albums were focused more on making lengthy songs than interesting ones, Still Life was this album with a lot more uninteresting filler (Benighted was the best song on there and the main riff to it is lifted from Never Let Go by Camel) and their 2000's albums grew even more dull probably due to Mikael's aging and Steve Wilson's gift at making everything he touches sound as flat and sterile as possible.

I agree with everything in this post. I hate how Opeth's music is so centered around Mikael's acoustic guitar, but it's apparent that it's what his best at doing. But as you pointed out, even his acoustic parts are stolen so fuck him.
It's was also clear from the start that he always leaned more towards prog than metal, but he can do no better than worship his favorite acts, so when he finally decided to go full prog it ended up sounding dull and uncreative.
>>
>>65106846
A lot
death metal is my favorite but that's mainly the OSDM/revival stuff (I love war metal too but it gets old after listening to it too long)
80's heavy metal whether British or not
Traditional doom and epic doom
Black metal (1st and 2nd wave)
Power metal (The riffier 80's stuff and modern bands in that vein like Blacksword)
Thrash of course but I barely listen to non-80's thrash that isn't mixed with death or black metal
And there's prog I like but it has to be rooted in metal and not feel like derivative prog rock that apes metal for the sake of it

If Mikael made Damnation in the 90's it would've been a really good album but he waited until he exhausted his most memorable and emotional acoustic melodies from his repertoire to release an extremely boring and forgettable acoustic blues album that only did well because Opeth became more of a brand name than band name at that point.

Give me good BM from this year. I haven't paid much attention to new releases. Last year was really good actually with multiple top tier albums, but from this year I pretty much just have pic related and nothing else.

My favorite kind of BM is all kinds of folk/pagan shit but I will happily listen to anything that has good riffs/melodies and some sort of point to it (see for example Mgla and Batushka from last year). Generic lo-fi blast beat BM is not something that I'm interested in.
