>Feels - Animal Collective
This is everything i wanted Strawberry Jam to be. The instrumentation is amazing, the vocal delivery is outstanding for most of The songs and the beautiful combination of their folk sounds from CS and Sung Tongs and the inmature Pop sounds of their later releases revealed the link that i always asked about between Early and late AnCo. However, Mr inconsistency payed a visit to another of AnCo's albums. The 2nd half is better than the first one, but at the same time the transition was Really awkward and even confusing. Bees was a song that appeared so unexpectedly that i had to check i wasn't listening to another album. I feel like going from energetic to Really slow is weird, specially the way it was done here. This is one of The grips that i had with Sung Tongs. Also while the mayority of The songs are standouts and amazing, there are obvious fillers. Either way, i felt that the songs were all amazingly done, and i feel that this style of them where you can see how they used everything they learned from their previous, more experimental albums, showing a clear path of evolution in their sound (So they could later reinvent themselves in MPP). Overall, Really good album, with amazing songs like Banshee Beat, Did you See The Words, Bees, Turn Into Something and Purple Bottle, but it suffers in the consistency department. I feel conflicted giving this score, but it deserves a
Final Score : Decent 7/10

I only ordered it online because my program placement employer (unpaid) gave me an amazon gift card as a thank-you.
I saw them live like 2 days after the release of PItFoL and figured I could buy it at the show, but they only had their newest album.
I like the thrill of hunting records and supporting bands/local stores so I try to limit purchases to in-store or at venues.

Nothing embarassing about that; I think they both share a lot of the same characteristics in terms of appealing to sprouting music lovers. Before that album I used to listen exclusively to dadrock and prog.
I actually don't mind that I went through that phase, because it gave me a good foundation to build upon when I started exploring further.

out of the two I like Black Fire more
>>
>>65068906
I agree Point of Departure is a little overblown, still mighty good though

I just bought One for One on Vinyl and listened to it for the first time, turned out to be one of my new favorites. it's got hubbard on trumpet and Henderson on sax if I recall correctly, I highly recommend it.
>>
>>65068932
Mere exposure effect; listening to it more times doesn't make it better, it just makes your brain more familiar with the sounds.
This is actually just a bad record, and the comparisons to Trout Mask Replica have me perplexed. I can't think of any redeeming qualities about it, and if one had to argue for the sake of arguing on the side of this album, I think even the biggest fans would have a hard time pinpointing it's virtues.
I gave it a 1 for ruining potential jazztime, a mortal sin in my books.
>>
>>65069001
Black Fire is really good too! I'd put it about on par with Point of Departure, maybe with a slight edge.
>>
>>65069027
Man, Hill has SO MUCH SHIT that wasn't released until decades after they were recorded.
Makes it real hard to keep up with and follow chronologically. I haven't heard this one yet; I'll have to check it out.
>>
lol this shit ain't getting done tonight. this is why you take notes while or shortly after you listen, kids. I could probably finish the Teens of Denial one tonight (spoiler: very very good) but i'm sleepy boopy. hopefully I'll get them done before euroboys go to sleep, if not you'll get spammed Monday

also since i'm desperate for attention/things to do i'll probably start a new tourney later this week (RIP old one), no reserving til i post the template tho
>>
>>65069067
I think people get hung up on how deliberate it is. Like, nobody makes a double album without having something to say, and especially something so confusing. Interestingly enough, having heard RTX live recently, the live versions of some of the songs actually sounded pretty great, which I think lends credence to the fan theory that there were fully constructed songs that were then deconstructed with key instrumentation somehow intentionally removed, leaving only the effects and backing instrumentation.

Either way, interesting enough idea with an obviously terrible execution. I'm admittedly a huge fan of the previously unreleased sister album/tapes, Hand of Glory. The back half of that album, The Boxing Story, is amazing chaotic sound collage in the same vein as Parable of Arable Land.

Haven't done one of these in a while. Had grad parties/hung out with friends all day so didn't have much time to listen to everything I'd like to have.

Don't feel compelled to review all of these and I plan to go to bed soon, but today I heard (from most liked to least):

>Macha - Forget Tomorrow
>Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
>Slowdive - s/t EP
>Global Communication - 76:14
>Beck - Sea Change
>Azalia Snail - Snailbait

Teens of Denial is great, and anyone that's enjoyed his previous stuff should try it out.

Macha is one of my new favorites. I know some think they're just a mediocre experimental/post rock band, but something about them is just so enjoyable to me. The neo-psych mixed with southeast Asian influences is fucking choice. Would rec to those looking for a good unique-sounding rock group to try out.

Frick yes. I might go to bed before it's posted but I'll be sure to read it :3

Fishmans –Long Season
4/5 || strong 8 / 10

Long Season is a great album, and demonstrates a very original take on pop music, reaching from moments of ambience and realistic sounds, to psychedelic stretches of minimalist themes.
The way that a single ostinato is sustained throughout such a large part of the album shows how strong the harmony and variance of timbre in the other layers of music are, that they can accompany the same melody over and over again without it sounding tedious. This is first seen at about 2:26 in the first part, along with a guitar part which has this thin and crunchy tone which I think really compliments the dreamy, ethereal sound of the piano.
When the vocals come in, the combination of their rhythm with the beat of the drums and the constant repetition of the piano motif makes a really clear rhythmic pulse to the music. The classic trick (which somehow always sounds great, never clichéd) of stopping the drums and having them re-enter on an offbeat happens at 5:27 to help the excitement in the buildup to the rest of the album.

The review is too long to put here in its entirety but it is on rym at https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/fishmans/long_season/ (my username is ~regency)

SOAD records still resonate with me. Amazing that a band only needed to put out five albums that rarely change to become metal legends
>>
Update long overdue. Tourney's cancelled btw. Added ratings for:
Gato Barbieri - Fenix (not as good as The Third World, still good)
Natural Snow Buildings - The Snowbringer Cult (great, on par with DOMAS)
Sainkho Namtchylak - Like a Bird or Spirit, Not a Face (really good avant-pop with some seriously gorgeous highlights and rather unique vocals, blending tuvan throat singing with western pop and folk elements without feeling like it's just western pop with unique vocals)
The Blind Street Musicians of Cusco - Peruvian Harp & Mandolin (rad, it kinda does exactly what it says on the tin, so if peruvian trad w/ harp and mandolin and vocals seem interesting to you, give it a spin)
The Residents - Demons Dance Alone (same style as Animal Lover, with shorter songs, but an equally eerie-melancholic mood. Not as memorable as Animal Lover in the end, but worth a try if you liked that album and want more)
Killer Bug - Beyond the Valley of Tapes (disappointing, considering we're talking about a 2-hour Kazumoto Endo comp here I expected more quirks and oddities, but it's mostly just solid harsh noise. Will keep you entertained if you like the style, but this one doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything, and might be a little too much to take in in one sitting)
>>
After years of loving this album I'm somehow still discovering new layers. It's just so fucking good.

>John Fahey - Fare Forward Voyagers (Soldier's Choice) [misha]
Fahey's take on the raga structure, but obviously executed with his trademark guitar style. The pieces start, slowly unravel and conclude in a climax, keeping a personal motive throughout.
I love what fahey can do with just a guitar, really. In fact, I'm not gonna question the playing, because it's immaculate and virtually flawless.
The thing I find funny is how I preferred the first two short pieces to the longer title track. I do think that fahey works best when he isn't inspired by indian music and consequently keeps the tracks shorter, but it's not like this isn't a very great album - it is very enjoyable and deserves its status. 3.5+

>Arthur Russell - Another Thought [edcvghjklpoiu]
This should be so sterile. There's not much going on, usually just arthur's vocals with simple electronic backgrounds, sometimes cello too. Why is it this good though? Because he can write songs. Catchy, remarkable, it's an utter joy to listen to; everything feels so good. It's one of those records that I can just decide to listen to and say damn, I'm really excited for it! I wish I could say more but I'm just utterly in love. 4.5 [WINNER]

I really have to say it, I wouldn't have never expected edcv to win. It's the joys of an un-rigged tourney. I also finished it which I'm happy about. Thanks to everybody who participied, it's 77 records which for the most part were good to great.

Dark Energy was excellent
I think this was my first Footwork album ever, and I'm still not sure what the genre is about. But I'm probably gonna explore it a little bit.
Really interesting glitchy soundcollage with a stunning voice, and lots of well placed samples. Over time it's changing its sound and rythms within a certain boundary that keeps it consistent.

A little bit earlier still here it is. I'm very proud of it but my taste sucks so it's probably awful.

It took me about half a year to release it but mostly because I'm lazy.

It should be a dark album with dissonant chords and progression with glitch and noise parts. For a better effect listen to it using a stereo because some of the songs have a marked stereo effect.

Hope you'll find at least something interesting in it and I can't wait to recieve the 1,5 stars from Terminus ;)

MIXTAPE TOURNEY
we're in the thick of it now, folks
that rake is getting closer and closer. just waiting on karenin, and then we'll have our finals.
SDC memed hard, got him a blue. Benji worked hard, got him a blue. Natkingcole made a good mix, but the best songs in it (peaches en regalia, dracula mountain) I already knew, and there were a couple of duds (that slavic post punk, discipline kiczkma or whatever), so nat got him a green.

sshx made the best tape yet in terms of cohesion, and I like all of the songs! that almost never happens. ever. sshx got her a blue and advances to the finals-- I was tempted slightly to give it a pink. there's just a few slow moments- the jan jelinek and fennesz songs are very good, but the weakest of the mix, and it makes the overall dynamic a little less. good job, sshx.

Blaze Foley - Live at the Austin Outhouse (2000)
>country, singer/songwriter, progressive country

A really cozy and melancholic live album. But I'll have to go against everything I've ever said about any album and say that these songs would actually be benefited with more fuller instrumentation. Not songs like "Clay Pigeons" and "If I Only Could Fly", which are perfect as is, but by the end of this hour long performance the fact that the /whole/ performance is just Foley and his guitar gets quite old, more variety is necessary. It's still exceptionally sad and pretty though, and the stage banter is fun to listen to, really brings you into the performance. And of course Foley was shot and killed only 4 weeks after this performance, which does definitely add to the sadness of these songs. Too samey, but still very good.

3.0+, probably the best I've heard on the chart so far.

Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park (1990)
>electro-industrial, industrial, post-industrial (so much industrial!)

Kind of a cross between soundscapey SPK-ish industrial and rhythmic Foetus/NIN-ish industrial and it does the former much better than the latter. But sadly it focuses a lot more on the more rhythmic, rocky industrial and the album suffers because of it. I just really don't like industrial rock too much. But the soundscapey stuff is really quite good, it's just a shame that it doesn't mix well with the lamer rocky stuff. I've gotta check out Last Rights, that looks a lot more interesting.

Dark Energy is not your typical footwork album. Listen to Da Mind of Traxman by Traxman or Double Cup by DJ Rashad and you will have a better understanding of the genre, I think.

Also, hey yo, /daily/. I have had a fantastic weekend. The blues show I went to yesterday was pretty great, just four old dudes who were very talented and played their hearts out. Then yesterday I went to see an old friend and had tones of fun. I am pretty tired now but content. Currently listening to SAW 2 and it is clicking hard, finally. I hope you are all having a great and relaxing sunday, I think you are all good people.

(vol. 1 is a lot less exciting)

>Also, hey yo, /daily/. I have had a fantastic weekend. The blues show I went to yesterday was pretty great, just four old dudes who were very talented and played their hearts out. Then yesterday I went to see an old friend and had tones of fun
I'm not that big of a blues guy but that certainly sounds fun

meeting old friends can be great too depending on the friend but I'm sure your friend is a neat lad

It was a very intimate concert, very laidback. It was popular blues but it was still a great gig. James Loveless, the singer, was amazing.

looks neat, thanks for the rec and also for the Jlin one

it's on spotify, so I'll probably listen to it sometime next week

No problem. So far nothing has come even close to JLin for me though, she seems to add just that tiny bit extra, don't know exactly what.

Huh, fun coincidence, the friend I was visiting during the weekend is a massive Ryan Adams fan. I never much cared for him, though.

>>65077539
I rarely talk about but I really really love blues. I just do not listen to it very often. Will check out whatever I can from that guy when I get around to it.
