Why does everyone agree Graf is the best show? Is it particularly better than the rest for some reason?

Also do I buy elseq or not? Since digital appeears to be the only format it appears to be on it feels lot different from buying another digital, but the whole "paying for different qualities" shit Warp does rubs me the wrong way.

>>65042791
elseq is great, so i'd def cop it. the best thing to do would be buy the mp3s to support the 'chre but then torrent the flacs and wavs if you want really 'em. i don't think ae should be punished for warp's dumb policies but it's up to you.

graf is just the perfect combo of being really brutal and really tight.

>>
The other day I was reading an old interview Sean gave and he pretty much laid out what they do and their "philosophy" in the most accurate and simple way imo:

>Do you know about wildstyle graffiti? Kids battling to get the least legible but the most fly interpretation that you can get. That's how we see it, really. It's that kind of abstraction-- it's not a disregard for the form-- you still totally, totally admire and respect what it is that you've got to work with-- and by that I mean traditional patterns that are recognizable to some extent. So, we're kind of flirting with available formats. What we're doing, we don't see it as any different from DJing or doing a cut-up or an edit mix. A re-application of rules and ideas and twists on them, with new moves if you like. Like popping or breaking, it's trying to come up with slight variations and new moves, variations on subsets of other moves.

Looks like there's at least some logic going on in the track album art from what I can tell. The album art for each part except 5 has a square in one of the corners of the album art. For each track on that album, the accompanying art always has a square arrangement going on in that same corner. For 1 it's lower left, 2 is upper left, 3 is lower right, 4 is upper right. 5 i interesting in that none of the art for it contains any squares at all, only circles.

>>
pendulu casual w/ headphones is absolutely mental

>>65059048
>though I know the latter track is super divisive
It's one of the few tracks that I feel could benefit from being edited down. It has cool ideas but they outstay their welcome too much imo.
>>
>>65058964
The Quietus wrote one of the best reviews of Exai, but then they ended it with a weird "warning" that Ae shouldn't get too comfortable with their sound. They'll probably criticize elseq for being to similar to Exai and the live sets.

Anyway, I don't really care but it's just interesting to speculate. Such an odd release.

That's fair. I'm enraptured by the whole thing but I have a soft spot for extremely self-indulgent Ae.

put eastre on as i fell asleep last night and it was really pleasant. can't really imagine why people wanted it cut down? i think with drone type tracks they become more effective the longer they go on so you can fully get that psychedlic effect. half measures don't really work imo - like i think outh9x would have been more successful if it were longer.

>>
>>65050613
one of their best
>>
Okay lads, I want to know how you feel about the 5 part-album aspect. This release, to me, shows just how little Ae care about acclaim or creating a "flawless" release. Like, they could have cut this down to one (or even two) discs made up of the strongest tracks and it probably would be considered "classic." But instead they choose to go in this direction and just dump everything. Does this make you "respect" the release more or less? Would you have rather they picked out the choice cuts and made a more cohesive listening experience?

Personally, I don't. For me this is an interesting statement to make, although I doubt AE were even trying to make one - they probably just simply wanted to make all this available for fans. It doesn't seem like a 'Kesto' situation where the brutal length is part of the concept. I'm glad they made this decision even though there are parts that I'm not feeling as much. Your opinions?

ppl complained even about Exai's length which I never understood.
They clearly are prolific and I love to hear the 20min plus tracks that wouldn't make it on an album length release.
I've always felt that their albums were a small piece of what they were doing, so this is a way of getting all this extra stuff directly without the need for marketing

Agree 100% This is such a unique opportunity. I mean, I get that is sort of similar to Quadrange and (Versions) in concept, but there is a bit of a difference because the original motifs of Quaristice were much more prominent and recognizable on those releases, so it didn't feel as fresh or w/t (even tho this def has some aspects of Exai and Ae_live).

On Exai: that to me was such a digestible release for me 2bh. The first time I heard it I played it twice while just chilling on the beach and it was pretty enjoyable.
>>
>>65063958
I like the concept but my attention span is waaay shorter than 4 fucking hours of abstract beats.
elseq is still beautiful and soulless (which is a good thing for me at least), but I don't think I'm ever gonna find the time to listen to it in its entirety. Maybe little elseqs, sorry but I have tons of other music to listen.
>>
What is the most aesthetically pleasing ae cover art?
I don't like to use bands t-shirts, but Autechre is /fa/ as fuck
>>
>>65064671
i think they wanted the listening experience to be pretty versatile and fluid - that's really the only reason why i think they'd release it into 5 separate sections like this. seems like their version of a "choose your own adventure" novel, similar to all the quaristice material. listen to it all at once? break them up into separate listening sessions? make your own personal playlist? all valid!
>>
>>65064671
no one says you have to listen to it all at once,
Digest 1 elseq at a time over months or something.
Fair enough if it's overwhelming for you though, this clearly isn't aimed at everyone.
I've listened to the whole thing 3 times :D
>>
Really loving the album but I feel like nothing will ever top Confield. That album elicits strong feelings from me, while this just amuses and impresses me
>>
>>65064896
i don't even think its possible to top confield (inb4 draft is better) but i do hope they keep trying
>>

i've listened to lp5 and tri reptae a couple times over but i dont really see the hype

and i'm definitely into idm. aphex twin, caustic window, richard d. james the list could go on

I'm not a fan of that shirt because it makes them look like a post-rock band. Pic related looks alright.

I'd like something more minimalistic.
I was thinking about Exai but that cover is really fucking autistic.

I sorta love and hate how they released this. It's so neat that they just dropped this on us straightaway and that they didn't have to go through all the marketing bs. That's great. But......

I'm a total fanboy and I want interviews and promo pics and another absurdly long webcast :(
>>
>>65068473
there were 3 hour long mixes they did recently iirc
NTS radio and 2 others I can't remember the names of.
>>
>>65068980
Yeah I listened to them all. The Solid Steel one was probably my favorite. Pretty sure it was just Sean doing them, at least the third was.

theyve been pretty tight lipped about modern hip-hop but i imagine they like the more overtly electronic/samples based stuff. i remember reading that they dont rate jazzy style hip-hop that much (they have specifically mentioned a strong dislike of de la soul).

we need another aaa 2bh. i wonder what they think about thugger lol.
>>
for those who are still interested, glacial dub techno from the alaskan broadcast was identified on watmm, it's 2814: http://ailanthusrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/--2 (track 7)
probably the other ambient track came from this catalogue too or something vaporwave related, who knows
>>
>>65073475
and i was fuckin right, it's the 4th track from the same lp
>>
>>65063958
Love it, but I disagree about them trying to make a statement. I think ae tries to do something different with every release, but this one isn't different in sound. It's different in concept.

I like to think of it like this: if Exai was a densely packed alien city, then Elseq is its solar system. Similar worlds but vastly different in concept (and size).
>>
elseq 4 best?

elcy6 uses every second of every minute to develop a consistent decay, an epic decay: if you listened intently you would have noticed this.
>>
>>65075697
decay of what? just the composition of the track in general?
>>
>>65075730
The composition.
It's blatantly obvious.
>>
>>65075750
i actually like the track a lot, but mostly because the use of fm synthesis is totally bonkers. didn't really think about an overarching "theme" but i'll see if I notice next time as that does make sense.

Phoenecia's Brownout was very similar to newer Ae, that album is 15 years old though.

Ena - Divided is also kinda similar, but only kinda. I think the only similarities I can hear are extremely weird sounds and very inhuman atmosphere.

do you guys think it's interesting that they've obviously included permutations of the ae_live stuff but they didn't do a version of the most well known "track" from the live show? the one that's partly featured here

>>
I was hoping they'd do a variation of the sorta poppy section with the bells.
>>

>>65081414
oof come on papi
Exai has the bladelores, recks on, spl9, the vekos 1 1 is, tuinorizn, nodeszh and deco loc
those are top drawer.

I do like the darker palette on elseq tho, some of the tracks have the same darkness vibes as the quadranges
