So now that the dust has settled, what do you give this album out of 10?

I give it a decent 8.
>>
For me it's a 9-10. I love every song on it.

fandando hasn;t even weighed in yet, this mess is still only beginning

Probably an 8/10

Weakest album by them though.

9/10. Feels like a natural combination of TMS/NLDW/TPTB in alot of ways. And Trash got me super stupid cheesy smiling way too hard the first time I heard it.

9/10, their strongest album except for possibly NLDW

I'd give it like a 9 or so, I don't feel like it's my favorite album because other albums have higher highs but I am impressed at how consistently enjoyable the experience is this time around.

7/10. too safe
>>
>>64658975
its great musically but whatever it was that made them exciting in 2011 is not exciting anymore
>>
7.5

There's some great singles, but the album's a bit too cluttered with ideas to make it altogether cohesive; some of the instrumentals and lyrics leave something to be desired also

Otherwise it's a solid release that easily holds itself up well to their older albums
>>
>>64659106
holy pleb opinion

Their best two albums are clearly GP and TPTB

Fantano here, strong 9

>>64661110
Jenny Death is an album where Death Grips just cranked the volume to 11 and went completely overboard on every song. It's a blown out speaker of an album, all teeth and no nuance. It's enjoyable in a really visceral way, but it's also the simplest album they've ever made. There's not much to reward repeat listens.

Niggas On the Moon is the most bonkers, out there album in their discography. It has their most abstract, thought provoking lyrics and most unique instrumentation. Every time I listen to it I pick up on something new, whether it's a bizarre sample or tempo change, or finally understanding what a lyric means, it's a gift that keeps on giving. It's like Persona by Ingmar Bergman. It's so dense in imagery that there's always something new to unpack every time you revisit it.

Fact: there is not a single outstanding song in this album that can compare to others like The Fever or Inanimate Sensation.
>>
>>64661365
I love NOTM actually but GP isn't anything special to me with the exception of Whatever I want and Pillbox hat
>>
It's one of their better albums imo. It's as fun and accessible as TMS, but this time the strong hooks and high energy is matched with actual musical "meat" - the entire language DG developed in their albums so far is being mixed here with, some new approaches (more punk influences), to create a really sweeping project.
I'd say BP isn't as incredible as their best experimental album, but it's still great.
NOTM > GP > BP > NLDW > JD > Exmil > TMS

BP doesn't have the same highs of their experimental work, but it's both accessible for people who don't follow the band and a satisfying listen for long-time fans who get to hear the influence of all their previous work.

Yeah, I agree completely. It's a great entry point to DG (assuming you don't want the experience of hearing them develop throughout the albums without knowing the end) - and it's also a great record for fans already familliar with DG to chill and have fun with the band's rich and polished sound.
I even put it above NLDW, which is a good "experimental" album, because I felt that if it isn't as good as GP/NOTM it can't compete with BP.

Same, but I find it underwhelming that there isn't an "iconic" song, not even the opener/ender. I mean, I like the album, but... it's like it lacks something, it's nice but there's nothing remarkable, it doesn't bring anything new to the table and there's not anything that gets you hooked.

I think MC Ride's rapping style and flow have changed considerably. There's a lot more experimental and new stuff he's doing vocally compared to usual. It's just that he apparently didn't have enough lyrics to make full songs. I don't mind the shorter lengths, but it's like most of them don't have a real ending, lyrically. They build to nothing almost. He's not telling a story in most of these songs, he's just saying shit. Good shit at that, but still. BP lacks the aggression they are known for, on the whole. It's got some of the heaviest, loudest bass I've ever heard but it's also somehow more tame than their previous work. I hope I will come to love it in the future, but for now it doesn't quite live up to what I was hoping for
>>

>>
>>64661748
The thing is that this album is a pop take on all the ideas Death Grips has had so far, so it's nowhere as genuinely aggressive as other albums. Of course, with it being a bit easier to get into it has a very consistent quality through that makes it fun to listen to and will honestly I think give it mainstream listening power but we'll have to see.

I don't know what they're trying to do with BP. It feels like a death grips album, but it doesn't have the same energy of their other albums - it doesn't really say anything, it's just music meant for appeal rather than depth. "Very Shallow Listening" is an accurate way of putting it. This feels like death grips 2.0, where they've already said everything they can, and the rest is just nice-sounding filler. I listened to it in the car with my girlfriend, and while she can't stand most of their other stuff except a few tracks on JD and TMS, she loves every track on BP after hot head.
I feel like we're getting closer and closer to Ride killing himself, though.
I think when we look back, we'll see that NLDW was the most "death grips" album out of all their releases. It was the natural conclusion of their style, I think they even said on release it that it was their most future-oriented album and they thought it would be their peak. I think it was their peak, and I think everything after NLDW - while good - isn't able to top that raw aggression.
So back to BP. Death Grips is a performance art act more than a music group. They paint a picture of a paranoid hacker getting super fucked up on drugs and transcending reality, coming into contact with the deeper powers behind the world. TPTB was moving into that transcendence. So what is bottomless pit? I can't figure it out. Musically, it has a consistent theme, but lyrically it does not. I don't know. It's good though 18.1/19.23
>>
Man 80808 doesn't get the respect. That shit bumps harder than most of ExM
>>
NOTM>BP>TMS>JD>ExM>NLDW>GP
>>
8/10 for me personally.
Probably 7/10 more objectively
>>

Point of reference for this ranking btw: I love NLDW, it was the first DG release I heard
>>
>>64660596
>exmilitary that low
>government plates that high
This feels like subtle bait
>>
>>64662404
It feels like it's more pedestrian and shallow in terms of lyrical content than their other albums - rather than being an examination of Ride's psyche like other albums have been, it's simply the bottomless pit of his mind - the shallow, insecure thoughts that flow through him being shouted out there to the world with a catchy, pop-styled musical exterior. The songs are all about people he doesn't like or aspects of society he thinks are shit all without going deeply into what that means about himself, it's very different than most DG stuff due to that.
>>
>>64658975
It's a solid 8.

I thought it was Andy with lipstick on
>>
>>64662459
What's it like having an absolutely shit opinion?
>>
>>64662404
Well anon if your analogy is correct, bottomless pit is MC ride having to deal with reality. And his actual life style is both a bottomless pit and him looking at life. He feels like "the enjoyment of life" is just impossible to obtain.

And I don't think he's going to commit suicide, at least not Stefan. MC ride maybe, but I doubt it. MC ride is just a character fuelled by the entire group.

What if the woman singing in the opening is actually the woman on the cover? That would make her some sort of physical manifestation of the bottomless pit that Ride is stuck in. She/it is giving all the good ideas to people like Ride who become hyperviolent and insane, doing things described in title track. Much of the lyrics have themes of sexual frustration or some sort of resentment for a woman. Would that then be the bottomless pit, the woman laughing in his face? idk could be something

Potentially high 9
>>
>>64658975
Some songs are really good but some songs are "HOLY SHIT I NEED TO BANG MY HEAD" good.
Really like the live blast beat drums and heavy guitars in this one. It's just amazing in every aspect.
A perfect combination of their previous albums styles with nothing missing in the performances.

I'd give it a strong erect 9/10.

>>
ExM > TMS > NLDW > JD > NOTM > GP > BP
fuck off nerds
>>
8/10

It's pretty much perfect musically, but I feel like they've lost some of the energy of their first albums. Probably inevitable after releasing 7 albums in 5 years, but it does prevent me from rating this on par with their earlier work. I'm not sure if they'll do anything after BP, but if not I'd be pretty satisfied with it as a farewell album. It sort of feels like Death Grips saying "we've still got it, bitch"
>>
I dont like Eh, Giving Bad People Good Ideas, and Hot Head. All the other songs are really good.
>>
I was surprised to see the leak and the download yesterday. After a nice amount of listens, I'd give it a high 8 or low 9. Definitely need to hear if it has that staying power my other favorites do.
>>
NLDW>EM>GP>TMS>BP>JD>NOTM

Could someone explain exactly why NOTM always gets rated so highly? It's not that I don't like it, but it only has 8 songs and only half of them are actually good.
>>
EP=Ex>NOTM>BP=TMS>GP>NOTM>Jenny Death> Fashion Week> True Culture> Live at Death Valley
>>
>>64662900
Trash made me crige when I first heard it. Its grown on me though. I feel like this album is like a refresh for death grips. it combines a lot of their pervious work and takes it to new areas and is probably their most consistant album other than NOTM. I never would have guessed that we would get a track like eh from death grips. It might be my favorite on the album. Ranking it against other Death Grips albums is pretty difficult right now since its so fresh and I listened to it at least 10 times this week, but Ill give it a shot.

NOTM>BP>TMS>Exmil>NLDW>GP>JD

Jenny Death being a 7/10 for reference.
>>
>>64665380
NOTM is my favorite personally, I like the way Bjork was sampled a lot and how it all flows like one long song. Also the lyrics are fantastic and Rides delivery of them is incredible, I appreciate how bizarre the whole project is in general, I can't say I've ever heard anything like it

>>
>>64666844
Big Dipper's chorus is weak as fuck and the songwriting is much less creative and interesting than Up My Sleeves or Black Quarterback

Death Grips hasn't been as good since they broke up, I genuinely believe that meant it when they said they had no ideas left

full moon is most likely ride's most aggressive delivery. not that it matters, why does that matter?

8-9/10 I hope they keep on making music this good in the future.

I give it a 6/10. It's lacking super emotive tracks that are in the vein of Say Hey Kid, I Break Mirrors With My Face In The United States, Artificial Death In The West, Centuries of Damn.

It's pure hobo screaming.
>>
just like everyone is saying, this albums feels kinda like a pop approach to all of their previous work but at the same time it really has new elements wich i think its super cool. to me they seem that with every new release, they challenge themselves to see what they can do with what they have at the moment, so it feels like they said "hey man we'been experimenting for a long time, what we could do so we can incorporate all these experimentation in a kinda pop way.
im really liking this album so far, i've listened to it a couple of times but it seems to get better with each listen; the album is cohesive as fuck, they mantain the quality in all of the tracks, fucking GBPGI its a hell of a intro man, these disorted "I KEeeEEEeep I kEeeEEEp" are fucking nice
idk what to say man, they're a fucking good band with a hella consistent and excellent discography
