So I just started listening to Song Cycle by Van Dyke Parks and so far it's pretty underwhelming... sounds just like a bunch of broadway showtunes. Am I missing something?

It's built entirely out of, even then, outdated niche genre music, and which outdated niche genre it's pulling from changes multiple times per song. It's very 'uncool' music and very self-aware of the fact of how 'uncool' it is.
