Not sure how old you are, but when Slipknot was a new band, it brought in a bunch of edgy teenagers who knew nothing about metal. Many of them truly believed that Slipknot was the heaviest band ever.
They would also participate in stupid wars with Insane Clown Posse fans. Both bands had the worst fanbases ever, yet each thought it was superior to the other.
It's kind of like watching college-aged Bernie Sanders supports fight with collage-aged Donald Trump supporters on facebook. Neither side has any clue what they are doing.

From its conception The Satanist was doomed for failure. Nergal had been playing the game for nearly 2 decades and was running out of ideas, he had released a few albums that cemented Behemoth as the Pantera of blackened death metal but he could only continue the trend for so long. One thing Nergal never attempted was orthodox black metal however, with the evergrowing popularity of Deathspell Omega and the orthodox BM scene Nergal decided to catch onto its fame. Airy dissonant riffs that get drowned out within the overly-dominating drummming and Nergal's metalcoresque grunts consist of all the "creative" songwriting in the album, throw in a few grooves for their Tapout shirt wearing Monster Energy™ drinking fanbase to pit to and some pathetic attempts at using keyboard ambiance to generate atmosphere, and you've got the ultimate derivative heap of garbage which can appeal to both Deafheaven and Slipknot fans. I must say, in terms of attracting the absolute worst of the metal community Nergal did a fine job, not one cancerous subset of the metal body has been excluded, any bands who wish to try appealing to the absolute lowest common denominator should take notes.

Production is important to all music, aggressive music should have production that reflects that and beautiful music should be the same. Songwriting and composition are important but awful production will ruin that, imagine if Kate Bush had the same production values as Ohura-Mazdo, regardless of the songwriting and composition everyone would think that she's garbage. Even then you notice a certain trend amongst bands that use certain production values, most brutal death metal bands center their music around chugs, blastbeats, and sparse flashes of technicality which their overly compressed production style serves to maximize. It's uninteresting music that uses sterile production to build the illusion that it's grand and heavy. On the contrary war metal bands like their music very raw with the guitar tone being as filthily chainsawed as possible, their chaotic barrage of heavy power chord riffing and demonic tremelo picking are perfectly complimented with the dirtier production values they choose to use.
