there's been al ot of arguing about the aspect ratio of human vision an the like, fruitless debate really.
very generally speaking the wide formats (with the black bars) are used in artier or grander movies, to give a grander scale and to show more of the background. it also cuts of more of the characters in closeup shots, focusing more on facial expressions or specific details in the shot.
boxier formats without the bars are more common in more ""mainstream"" cinema, usually to keep the frame more packed and exciting, to keep the drama up. both have their pros and cons.
