Slipknot hail from Iowa and play what is fundamentally death-metal, but they do so with two novel ideas: they are a large ensemble, not the stereotypical quartet, and they wear horror costumes. Thus Slipknot (Roadrunner, 1999) leverages turntables, samples and percussions, not just guitars, to achieve maximum ferocity, in a manner that makes Slayer and Sepultura pale.
The music is excessive and furious, with frequent changes of pace, and a wealth of sonic detours. The grotesque panzer dance of Sic lets the vocalist scream his vulgar outrage over tribal drums and mad guitars. A similar farcical posture, conjuring images of a witches cancan, underlies Surfacing, while the turntables hark back to the industrial devastation of Cop Shoot Cop. The limping pace and the agonizing guitar riffs of Eyel E SS sound like a vaudeville sketch in hell. The epic rap of Spit It Out indulges in wild dynamics, for example repeating the refrain in two completely opposite tones, that demonstrate the difference with, say, Kid Rock. This style that straddles the line between tragic and comic reveals its desperate face in Liberate, not a song but an act of vomiting, and No Life, not a song but a schizophrenic duet between an evil and a wise selves.
In the middle of this uncontrolled havoc, the bands suddenly turns into Nirvana copycats with the relatively catchy refrain of Wait And Bleed, while Tattered And Torn is an avantgarde piece masquerading as a personal exorcism. And the album closes with the total chaos of Scissors (nine minute), a Freudian descent into a damned soul. There is enough variety to engage the listener in a re-examination of her metal stereotypes.

Thrash critics rank the highly controversial Coroner over thrash bands who were highly popular in radio stations around the bay area. Black metal critics are still blinded by commercial success. Death metal critics grow up listening to a lot of death metal of the past, thrash metal critics grow up listening to a lot of thrash metal of the past. Black metal critics are often totally ignorant of the black metal of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Deathspell Omega did anything worthy of being saved.

Near the pinnacle of modern music, Slipknot's repertoire is so unfairly glazed over in the overly white sophisticate as to make me sick, but to make such beautiful, inspiring works into mere political statements (though that they are, in part) would be to reduce one of the most amazing careers in music ever to nothing more than that of a typical angsty teenager, and that treatment may be a fate even worse than public ignorance.
The works on display here are titanic. "Slipknot" opens the set, and immediately, it is revealed that there is such a thing as a populist death metal. But that is the name of the game for Slipknot - a shatterer of preconceived notions, and one of the very few in the avant-garde to make John fucking Cage seem conservative by comparison. I could go on for days about how "5: The Gray Chapter," though the worst of the set, far outstrips the careers of most modern composers entirely; how "All Hope Is Gone" is a more "classical" approach for Slipknot, and it succeeds endlessly; how their highly political first three albums could easily be called the greatest triptych ever conceived in music; and how the "If You're 555 then I'm 666" of "The Heretic Anthem" separates the most impactful bars of music I've yet heard.
But I won't.

Catch Thirty Three (Nuclear Blast, 2005) is an experimental suite broken down in brief movements that focus also on tape loops and beat machines and not only on guitar riffs and vocal growls. The hypnotic The Paradoxical Spiral is the only piece that escapes the funk-punk influence in the first half of the album. The problem is that all the brief fragments that segue into each other tend to sound repetitive, each one sounding like a remix of the previous one. (The first three and the second three compose two distinctive units). Technically speaking, Meshuggah's decade-long post-modern exorcism reaches its zenith with the 13-minute In Death Is Death, that is, ultimately, a sequence of sound effects (the last six minutes without any accompaniment). Shed is the "regular" song of the batch, but certainly not even close to the ferocity of Chaosphere. The seven-minute Sum is even more abstract, with delicate guitar tones floating around aimlessly. The playing on this album is not so much surgical as robotic. The contrast between the brutal group parts and the tenuous guitar soliloquies is not bridged adequately.
