Who is good in Bruckner
Stereo only please
>>
>>64230577
schuricht may be my favorite overall, but Horenstein left some pretty great live stereo Bruckner, especially that 8th and 5th on BBC Legends.

pre-Munich Celibidache is also quite good with very idiosyncratic but always interesting balancing and dynamic decisions (and he actually plays the scherzos faster than most).

then there's Rögner, Böhm, Kubelik, Matačić (droll Czech winds), and maybe some Jochum too. probably some others i'm forgetting.

yes, but only if you grab the Audite recordings

the DG ones are typical crap DG sound and the strings and brass especially have this horrible gleam to them.

the Audite ones generally sound pretty good, and stuff like the 6th and 9th have a deliciously wide dynamic range.

>>64242154
there are a lot of convincing Mahlerians. other than Kubelik look towards Horenstein, Rosbaud, Walter (earlier the better), Kegel, Kondrashin, Maderna, Schuricht, Klemperer (earlier the better), Adler, Martinon, Stokowski, Scherchen, Mengelberg, Steinberg, van Beinum, Mitroupoulos, Tennstedt (heart-on-sleeve. might not be for all), Neumann, Boulez (only look for the live ones), etc.

there are other conductors worth mentioning as well, but you get the point.

>>64242360
not only is it the best recording of that symphony, but in my opinion it is probably one of the best recordings of anything ever.

though i do like other 4ths. Rosbaud and Horenstein especially
>>
>>64243044
>the DG ones are typical crap DG sound and the strings and brass especially have this horrible gleam to them.

i have the first cd editions and they definitely sound better than the later remasters. the DG kubelik cycle is truly one of the greats.

>>
>>64243826
He's popular with beginner classical fans. He's seen as the culmination of romantic classical and most people think classical ended after him. Also, symphonies are seen as the apex of classical and his are long so they must be the best. Much as I like Mahler he is someone you have to grow out of to grow in to classical.
>>
>>64243826
>why is mahler so ridiculously popular amont milennials?
in terms of numbers he was probably way More popular with previous generations than milennials, what are you smoking? Most people of this generation haven't even heard a Beethoven symphony all the way through.
>>
>>64244019
>He's popular with beginner classical fans.

only sensible answer. thank you.
>>
>>64244019
>He's popular with beginner classical fans
Well that's not really true. Most of the beginners I've talked to gravitate towards classical-era, early romantic, and baroque. I don't see them discuss late romantic very much.

I didn't appreciate Mahler until long after I started getting into classical. Hated him at first.

>>
>>64243826
He was more popular with the composers of his generation and he had a great influence on the SVS and a lot of other 20th century composers. He is probably as relevant to millenials in regards to composition as Bruckner is. Which is to say, not at all.
>>
>>64244359
>He is probably as relevant to millenials in regards to composition as Bruckner is. Which is to say, not at all.
You say that, but there's always those retarded comments that I see on Bruckner's videos which say something along the lines of, "Whoa this is classical metal!!!" or something similarly stupid.

Just back from an ok performance of Rach's 2nd concerto (1st movement is tolerable, and I was reminded why the other two are shit) and Dvorak's 7th symphony, which I am more and more convinced is the patrician choice of Dvorak symphony. Mahler does do this. If you look at his symphonies in particular, you will see he attaches symbolism to specific keys. If a symphony starts or ends in a certain key, its for a good reason.
