Reposting, because this brand doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Flaxwood has a few new models:
http://www.flaxwood.com/models/
>>
>>64140547
It's a 10 strings, with 5 added strings. It's an extended frankenstrat.
There's also two or three strings that don't touch the fretboard.
A0, the note you get if you drop a BEADG 5 string bass to AEADG, is the lowest note on a piano, so basically that means a few of these strings are really useless.

tl;dr : garbage

Eh, I don't really see your point. Sure, you can take a Harley Benton and change all the parts, dress and file the frets, etc. but I doubt it will feel or sound as good as some other guitar that was built better from the start. I built a Tele with my father and while it doesn't look anything special, it feels better than just about any Fender I've come across, it has more sustain than an average Les Paul and it's the loudest solid body I've heard.

That's a fair point. I still think you should try a Flaxwood, if you happen to come across one. At least they are comfortable, if nothing else.
>>
>>64141910
but they look goofy

but yeah, that small body is appealing from an ergonomics standpoint. Should be very well balanced. I've always thought the extra chunk of wood behind the tailpiece on most electric guitars was kind of funny. Just to make it look more like an acoustic they make it that much heavier.
>>
>>64141830
Been playing for 15 years and same here.
>>
>>64142099
You'll get used to the looks. They are really light (but not neck-heavy), because they are hollow and the small body doesn't interfere with your right arm, like it sometimes does with a Les Paul. The Hybrids are a bit heavier. But the shape and feel of the neck and the sound are the main selling points for an average guitarist. Some might also appreciate the fact that they aren't affected by changes in humidity.

Why do you want to shred. Do your playing style require it? If not don't bother.

Shredding is pretty much going to die soon. Nobody bothers playing at 1000 BPM and sweep picking every single damn phrase. Even the kids nowadays, Nick Johnston, CHON, Polyphia, they don't do all the crazy chops that your past heroes used to do.

Originally they experimented with flax composites and the name stuck. In reality the material is called Kareline and it's made by Plasthill. And basically it is liquefied wood. It's spruce pulp or cellulose in polypropene matrix.

Not exactly. Fiberglass is made up of long fibers instead of short (to put it bluntly), so fiberglass products aren't injection molded. Also, it's not as eco-friendly as FRC.

>>64143921
Sturdiness isn't a real material property and there are many types of carbon fiber composites. While carbon fiber composites can have impressive mechanical properties, they also have disadvantages. They have a large carbon footprint, they can't be injection molded, their properties are hard to tune (Kareline can be tuned acoustically, although it hasn't been done yet in the guitars), they are usually over 50% heavier, they are much more expensive... It would be very difficult to make a similar guitar out of carbon fiber, because they could only use lamination.

>>
>>64146598
What a great comment.
>>
>>64145952
Injection molding has the advantage of making production cheaper... But these are expensive. Also frankly I don't give a shit about how much wood goes into a guitar. Flaxwood say themselves that their necks are no sturdier or weaker than a wooden neck. Carbon fiber necks are way sturdier. And yeah, sturdiness isn't a specific property, but rather it means less susceptible to breakage. As far as stiffness goes, however, there's no way there are stiffer than a carbon fibre neck.

Also, "tuning" a neck? First of all, we're talking about electric guitars here, with electric guitar strings. They sound like shit acoustically. Second, nobody anywhere has ever tried to tune a neck... Hugely futile. If they were making acoustic guitars I'd be interested in the tonal properties. I have a injection molded ukulele and it sounds great, mostly since it doesn't need bracing.
>>
Stop replying to the flaxwood guitars sales rep.

Their guitars are hideous.
>>
I have a MIM Fender Strat, and I was thinking about getting another guitar--one with a different sound and feel.

What's the difference between using a dual coil setting on a Strat and a humbucker on a Les Paul? I'm looking at mid-range options, so I was thinking of an Epiphone LP or an Ibanez (I'd like 24 frets) with humbuckers but without a tremolo arm.

Aight /mu/tants, I'm trying to get into bass and need to pick an instrument. I just sold a Gibson SG bass that I tried learning on; it felt right to me in the store while I was trying it out, but the more I practiced with it the more I the short-scale neck dip was starting to bug me. So sooner or later I'm going to pick up a Jazz Bass, but they Aerodyne model just caught my eye. Does anyone have experience with it? It's not just that it looks slick; the Jazz Bass and P-Bass pickups would give me extra tone flexibility, supposedly.

>>64146846
the two pickup setting on a strat are parallel rather than series, and do not utilize a bar magnet. These things result in a clearer tone. The pickups are farther apart, which results in a muddier tone. The pickups are farther apart, resulting in hypothetically a wider frequency response or two distinct peak frequencies. In general, a strat wired in series is slightpy muddier than a humbucker with the same total outpit and magnet type. However this is also effected my things such as pole piece size and shielding.
>>
>>64146874
the neck dive wasn't a result of it being short scale, in fact the neck length has the opposite relationship of what you imagine. The neck dive on an EB is caused by the strap button position.

Also, consider going the fixer-upper route. You could get a cheap bass and fix it up. It might be worth it to you if you want noiseless pickups, I'm not a fan of the fender ones.

Thinking of picking this up along with the Compressor one to complete my first kinda budget pedal board.

Marshall Echohead

>>
>>64147230
Thanks for the explanation. I'm going to try to find a good humbucker guitar to try.
>>
How thin can a Les Paul-style headstock be without becoming too weak? Could it be reduced from 5/8" to 1/2"? How about 3/8"?
>>
>>64146846
If the pickups on a strat were in series like a normal hb, the 2 and 4 settings would be significantly louder. There's some phase cancellation in there, probably because they're facing different points along the string and the wave hits one before the other.
>>
>>64146728
Injection molding can make products cheaper, if they are mass produced. These aren't, because they aren't well known. For now, the advantage of injection molding is making the guitars consistent. The material is homogeneous, so every guitar is identical unlike guitar made out of wood. And yes, carbon fiber composites have higher flexural modulus and tensile strength but on the other hand, if normal wood is suitable for building guitars, so is wood fiber composite. Still, carbon fiber is much harder to work with.

And different materials dampen different frequencies, so it's possible to change those characteristics by changing the composition of the material. This effect is most noticeable in acoustic instruments, so at this point it is indeed mostly futile but it's a great option if they ever have enough money to expand their product range further. Do note though that the regular models have also a composite body, so it's not just the neck.

>>64146809
I don't even own one of them (although I will buy one as soon as I have extra money). My father has a Hybrid and I've played other models in store. Also, they are excellent, not hideous.

>>
>>64147659
try to at least listen to a covered one and an uncovered one. It'd also be good to listen to a rail or oversized pole piece one if you can find one. Honestly it's difficult to get your hands on this stuff, so if you can find demos online straight to interface you're better off. Listen to as many magnet types, windings, and configurations as you can.
>>
>>64146562
I just did it, works fine. Part of the harsh sound from the bridge PU in the Yamaha is due to the fact that it is very close to the bridge, but swapping it for the Squier single coil did mellow it out to some degree.

Guys, what is William's guitar used in video You Trip Me Up? I found some tips it can be Fender Coronado, but I don't think so, or one of EKO guitars, I didn't found anything similar nor from Vox. Can it be Guild or Kay or what?

>>64154935
Yeah, shorter whammy bar doesn't get that much in the way of the air vibrations, which actually make you hear if a song is recorded outside or inside. And also it'll make your bridge send it's vibrations only to the bridge pickup if you have it right above the pickup - this is only a very small difference that makes your playing with the lower strings sound a bit richer, but trust me - it's like an extra string above the regular strings. Would recommend to get the plastic tip off it and make it slimmer so it would vibrate more.
That's a tone tremolo bar.
>>
>>64155506
Could also be one of these

Anyone of you tried selling yourself on fiverr, providing guitar tracks service? O have been thinking about doing that, but my current skills aren't supposingly professional standards. I can play your standard pop/rock electric guitar, maybe drop in a solo or two.

I plan to just charge very little for one guitar track. Is this a viable way to earn pocket money?

Shredding has generally gotten more melodic, people are actually putting thought into composing a solo rather than just blazing through it with messy notes. There's still the fast runs and stuff, but I feel they are mainly ornamental and isn't the core of the solo.

Looking to pick up a looper that has the ability to overdub, and then remove layers arbitrarily.

Anyone have experience with loopers?
>>
>>
>>64157714
>arbitrarily

Not sure what you mean by this.

Generally you can undo the last overdub, most will do that. Boss RC3 is the /gg/ approved pedal but I generally shill the NUX Loop Core which is a fully featured clone for half the price.
>>
>>64158044
Say I have loop playing, and I overdub something ontop of it. It'd be nice if I could remove the "bottom" loop without altering the overdubbed portion.
>>
>>64157792
*tips unergonomy*
at least it's not one of these brick shaped danelectros
>>
>>64158091
never heard of one. I think it would be neat too. But there's a big difference in how difficult that would be to implement. The way the two layer loops work is they commit half their memory to the loop you can undo, and half to the main loop. You don't need any more memory each time you write to the main loop because the new audio is added on top of the old, in the same memory. It's impossible to remove if it's stored in the same memory. So if you want to remove any layer, you need to have a ton of layers in the first place, which would take a ton of memory.

Well, memory is getting cheaper all the time.
>>
>>64158254
Thanks dude.

Was hoping it'd exist so I could take the strain off my hands a little bit by playing less.
>>
>>64158335
I'm sure there's a computer program that can do it. Anyways, there might be a pedal, just not one with an arbitrary depth. Y'know, no infinite memory.

Yeah, I'll have to mess with software. Might be too expensive or tedious to setup and play shows with though.
>>
>>64158398
It's not like you could use it live anyway, removing lower level loops? Too slow to do live. Better to record some part of the song in question in advance or get another guitarist.

Maybe, I could see it working if you have two switches, with one selecting the loop to edit, and one to switch them on and off.

Might just get two loopers at this point and have one my wet one on my dry.

Only reason I'm so autistic about it is because I have hand issues, and can't make it through some of my songs, and I think looping some stuff might make it easier.

Lefty guitarist for 1 year here. I decided to start playing the bass, but finding a lefty for a good price is not easy. Considering I am not sure if am going to like it and I would keep playing my guitar lefty, which one makes more sense?
> Find a lefty bass, pay more, get used to it a play lefty forever.
> Play right. Currently does not sound that bad to me as my right hand is not used to large frets and my left hand to plucking.
> Buy a righty bass, flip it and play. If I find one without annoying knobs that could work out, as I won't be playing chords anyway.
> Buy a righty bass and make it a lefty.Apart from knobs still being in the and the awkward body shape this also seems doable.
Any advice/experience on that?

How much does guitar playing help when starting with the bass? (other than ear training, theory etc.) Buying a lefty unfortunately means getting used to it and having the same troubles every time I get a new one + not being able to play other peoples basses.

God damn I'm dumb, I didn't realise you were talking about bass. Yeah the range on 4 strings is absolutely terrible, and the low B doesn't really give more options for chords. I really wonder how these EADGC 5 string Ibanez BTBs play.

>>64159066
I'm guessing it's more delicate to build

>>64159027
The most annoying thing about it is getting the fingering and muting technique up to speed and getting used to the wider frets + thicker strings. Once you get that down it's a matter of practicing that like you would guitar

Look, I don't want to be that guy but as a lefty you should join the legions of lefties on talkbass that buy sx basses. Get one, upgrade whatever you're unsatisfied with, and it won't cost you any more than a right handed bass. Honestly, I'm right handed but if you upgrade an sx you'll find yourself holding your dream bass for, in my case, under $300. Yeah, I had my frets leveled and threw in some seymour duncans. Yes, I set it up. But I didn't need new tuners, a new bridge, or even new electronics. Next on my wish list is a cavity ground. But by all means I've already got a bass that sounds better than a fender to me.

As a lefty it's going to be way easier to get the bass you want through modding than praying somebody puts out the bass you want for a fair price. It might often cost more to buy a left handed bass, but it never costs more yo mod one.

Playing sitting down right now, can't be the strap's fault. The only way for it to play right is using three fingers, but for something that's played at 150bpm it makes the task a lot harder than what it should be.
And then again, if I play the same pattern higher or on other strings it's fine, I don't understand either why my wrist hurts when I play there.
