I listened to this once, on acid. Incredible experience, but pretty scary.
I felt my body split in two, its physical and spiritual form, separated, and I came back to senses in another body.
I was seeing through the eyes of a young man, an underachieving fellow with a passion for arts, a misunderstood mind, coping with social and expressional problems, and it was beautiful because I was looking through your eyes...

You have yet to provide a shred of evidence to support your claim, and there's literally no way to prove whether or not Captain Beefheart never did something, you're going to have to provide proof of your claim. I know having taken LSD is the only way you'll consider someone's opinion, but in the real world we like people to prove things.

>>64106629
There's a huge difference between caffeine and LSD. He never took LSD. That's what I asked you to prove. But technically you're right. If he was ingesting caffeine, he was taking drugs. With that sort of logic, Frank Zappa must've been a huge drug fiend what with his love of nicotine and beer.

"The formlessness and intensity of Beefheart's music have often led people to conclude that he is merely another product of the drug culture. Sadly, much of the promotion material on him in past years has implied that he is the king of the drug heads and hip freaks. Nothing could be further from the truth. Don Van Vliet does not use drugs and does not allow members of the Magic Band to do so either. Like his friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart admonishes everyone to stay away from LSD, speed and marijuana. The reason for this is not only that he believes that drugs have harmful and irreversible effects, but also that each person has the power to get "there" all by himself."

Where is this quote from? It's quite accurate, but I was curious about the fact that Frank Zappa is referred to as a "Friend" since they had a huge falling out and never spoke to each other again after Bong Fury. Safe as Milk sounds like a straight ahead blues album. If he was doing drugs, I would imagine that he would've just be smoking pot and drinking fortified wine.

Strictly Personal, on the other hand, sounds like something that would've been done on acid, or inspired by an acid trip. (I'm not saying that he did any of these things, I'm just saying that's what I would think in my own imagination)
>>
>>64106416
"First we were with A&M and did Diddy Wah Diddy before Safe as Milk. The name meant the strontium-90 content of the woman’s breast and not acid, as it was taken to mean, as everything was taken to mean at that time. That’s one of the reasons I split for a while. I didn’t want people to think my imagination was due to… something external. I’m a very pure type of -ist. I eat health food and I don’t use anything."

Actually, I'd rather get drunk and smoke weed while listening to Safe as Milk. I think Strictly Personal is more of an LSD album. But, again, I tell you that one doesn't have to be high on anything to enjoy Captain Beefheart's music. (But it does make it a bit more fun for those who choose to imbibe)

>>64017102
Where did you get your information from? If you know anything about the making of TMR, or about the history of The Magic Band in general, then you would know that Captain Beefheart not only wouldn't have tolerated anybody doing drugs while recording an album, he probably would've beaten the shit out of them if he found out. Please reveal your source.

I've read various articles through out the years where Captain Beefheart stated that he didn't like the sound or the production quality of Strictly Personal. Although, that being said, I still enjoy that particular release. It's one of my favorites by him, but, admittedly, I'd like to hear the album the way he originally intended it to be heard by the public. (I guess we never will, though)

The Mirror Man Sessions has "clear" versions of 5 Strictly Personal tracks (Safe as Milk, Trust Us, Beatle Bones 'n' Smokin' Stones, Gimme Dat Harp Boy, Kandy Korn)

And another (and better, imo) version of On Tomorrow can be found on the 1999 CD reissue of Safe As Milk as a bonus track.

The blog Albums That Never Were did a good reconstruction of it. It was called It Comes to You in a Brown Paper Wrapper and was supposed to be a double album.
>>
>>64106611
>Captain Beefheart never did drugs. Please tell me your source, because it's wrong.
>To support the album's release the group had been scheduled to play at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. During this period Vliet suffered severe anxiety attacks that made him convinced that he was having a heart attack, possibly exacerbated by his heavy LSD use and the fact that his father had died of heart failure a few years earlier. At a vital 'warm-up' performance at the Mt. Tamalpais Festival (June 10/11) shortly before the scheduled Monterey Festival (June 16/18), the band began to play "Electricity" and Van Vliet froze, straightened his tie, then walked off the 10 ft (3.0 m) stage and landed on manager Bob Krasnow. He later claimed he had seen a girl in the audience turn into a fish, with bubbles coming from her mouth.[47]
>eefheart was most definitely not in a sane frame of mind during the writing of the album; he banned LSD from the band's house after he went down into the cellar on an acid trip, found mushrooms growing in a corner, and suffered a panic attack when he thought he'd discovered an alien life form invading the house.
