Old Swans (80s and 90s) was a genuine underground band producing innovative music that was under-appreciated by the public/the media.

Nu Swans is an incredibly mainstream group producing generic post-rock, whose fanbase is made up solely of /mu/core and P4K teenagers/20-somethings, as evidenced by the fact that everyone in the comments sections of their videos has Death Grips/meme avatars.

Yes, idiots, one or two exceptions don't make the general idea moot. One of the reasons you idiots jerk off Swans, Meme Grips, and all the other memebands is because you think they're sooooo obscure when in reality they are pop af
>>
>>63898077
>>63898126
The point is that what /mu/ considers "bad" or "good" is really fucking arbitrary.

/mu/ will pan dadrock as "bad" and "boring" (The latter of which is often true) but celebrate the most safe-sounding western pop artists.

A lot of /mu/'s taste is based off of opposition to musical trends elsewhere on the internet on Reddit, Youtube, etc. /mu/ sees some 15 year old kid in a Youtube comment lamenting that "pop music is shit, this old rock band is way better" and decides that it is going to hate said old rock band and love said new pop music, just to make a point of opposition.

Bands like Swans and Death Grips are for some reason still considered an "alternative" to mainstream internet music tastes by /mu/, despite the fact that if you take a trip to /r/music you will see countless mentions of Swans/DG songs and albums.
>>
>>63898164
>because you think they're sooooo obscure when in reality they are pop af
Proof?
I think most of the board likes them because they make decent music. But you seem to be the expert, so enlighten us - where's your proof?

I don't care if Death Grips are the most popular group on earth, my opinion won't change on them. (I love them)

Swans are okay too but they haven't really done too much for me yet.

Who cares how popular something is?

stop making assumptions. Swans has always been popular, and it's only a vocal minority who like DG
>>
So, .02% of Facebook's population likes Swans, and that's somehow not obscure?
>>
>>63898191
Proof is the fucking picture I posted. All your memebands are pop music basically. Nothing wrong with that, but then you all go and hate popular music and shit when in reality there's not much difference between, say Dismemeberment Plan and fucking Dance Gavin Dance.
>>
>>63898184
Swans and Death Grips get shit all the time here because of their small internet fame. I bet there hasn't been a Swans or Death Grips thread without the word meme in it since 2012. They are still "alternative", however, because most people who don't consider music a hobby don't know of them. None of these concepts are that hard, and more importantly, none of them matter.

I like St. Vincent but I'm not going to say she's obscure. At the same time I don't think she or Grimes are as popular as you think, as I rarely meet anyone who has known St. Vincent. Which I think is unfortunate because the discussion of her here is awful.

Though I don't think you've listened to her much if you think she's exactly the same as the other 2.

I'd say it's quite a bit more pathetic. The Deakin thing is just hype, which always happens upon a new release, I don't know about Zach Hill, but again, the DG fanbase is a vocal minority

>The album peaked at number 37 on US Billboard 200, and later debuted at number 38 on the UK Albums Chart. Both are the highest chartings that Swans had ever achieved on a studio album, and it is the first time that the band cracked the top 40 in both countries
people will unironically say they're underground
>>
>>63898992
Well, you could easily reason that they only broke Top 40 because P4K shilled the hell out of them after The Seer.
Thanks to Larkin that won't be happening this time. The Glowing Man will be far away from the chart
>>
>>63898992
prior to that album they were right on the edge of being popular in the music circles but not enough for the whole project to be profitable for Gira. Noiw it's generating revenue. I think they still make worthwhile material though. Love these guys.
>>
>>63898957
Maybe, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the artist. And this thread is stupid like everyone is saying because most things people talk about on here are pretty popular but even with that popularity a lot of them probably wouldn't be known by some random guy on the street. There are varying degrees of popularity.

I swear that what Gira has done with Swans and Young God has been the most effective transition to the internet age by any musician.
Not only is Swans critically acclaimed and really popular in "indie" (read: hipster) circles and online communities like /mu/, but they also sell the albums in multiple physical and digital formats straight from their website.
They easily profit from rereleases because of the vinyl meme.
Also, he manages to stay active on Facebook without succumbing to the oversharing and lack of common sense like many old celebs/musicians do.

>>63900255
Great post, absolutely agreed. Swans made a perfect comeback: they refused to look back, got new sound, released some of their best material and are more popular than ever not only with old fans but young folks as well. I don't know a single band that pulled this off.
>>
Please note that I am not dissing Swans' or Mr Raper's musical ability
>>
>>63900255
Swans are one of the very few bands that pulled a revival off post-2000s and still managed to be god tier. The only other one I can think of is Magma
>>
>>63900255
Yeah, everything Gira has done with Swans should be commended. I'm embarrassed for idiots like OP who just see the world through their narrow dumb fucking internet bubble.

Swans have achieved some level of success by hard work and innovating and always changing and evolving their sound. They're not a mainstream group by any means, 200k likes is nothing online. There are music groups out there that get billions in views, BILLIONS, and you're gonna tell me that Swans is even comparable to that because it managed to get into the top 40? They're underground, its' just "underground" is changing, it isn't the same thing it was before, there are thousands of sub cultures online now, this music is made available to a wider group of people, but that group is still part of a "niche" audience, even if they're quite large.

Are there more obscure bands? no fucking shit, this isn't a pissing contest.

4chan as a whole has always had contrarian culture, but it's gotten a little too extreme lately, to the point where liking anything is considered cringeworthy

Swans has had a large fanbase since the mid-late 2000s, but people on /mu/ delude themselves into believing that Swans was their personal treasure, that they created, despite the fact that their music is widely acknowledged and known to be extremely influential. Swans was barely even discussed on /mu/ until 2013.
