What's the difference between indie and alternative ?

nobody knows for sure legend has it that some dude figured it out one day but that legend itself is a myth
indie original just meant independently produced where as alternative was just the alternative options from top 40 radio.
However Indie has grown into its own sound and culture. Despite the word indie not describing a style or sound, plenty of indie sub genres have a pretty specific sound to them.
Alternative is vague as fuck now.
