>>
>>63632092
But I did. I play every classic metal instrument in fact, as a jack of all trades, master of nothing. Just so I can enjoy the musicianship on albums more.
>>
>>63632196
the reason why I asked is because while I definitely have a deeper understanding of the music as a musician, I remember enjoying listening to music a bit more before.
>>
>>63632242
You get pickier, but that's a good thing. Your personal interest in playing instruments and creating metal guides you through music better than any caverncore chart ever could.
>>
>>63632268
I fail to see how pidgeonholing myself is a good thing. I refuse to listen to 90% of new releases from my favorite genre because its not fitting the "right mood', or because riffs are way too much "like something that I dislike" etc.
>>
>>63632306
I tell you, listening to one really good album per year is better than listening to a thousand meh ones and one good one.
Don't believe in the more more more culture (which is prevalent in this general and board big time).
>>
>>63632364
nah this board is as hipster as they come. its all about the underground meme flavor of the year bands. when you check end of year top lists on /meal/ its straightforward cringe
>>
>>63632415
I agree. All I'm saying is, trust yourself when you don't like something even if you think of yourself as "too picky".
I think the ideal state is reached when you really don't quite like anything that comes out anymore and then you have to create your own music based on your previous influences. Not that I have reached this state yet, my personal musicianship is still far too crappy for that, but I can see that's the way it will go on the long run.
>>
Did you still enjoy black metal after you started playing an instrument? My interest faded greatly but I still like 2nd wave for how interesting it is
>>
>>63632515
No. I am still able to enjoy subtle atmoshit and melodic death metal, but bm is too fucking simplistic.
>>
>>63632555
Same, but we can agree that early melodeath was great?
>>
>>63632566
Depending on what you count as early melodeath, I like both.
>>
>>63632515
I enjoy it when it achieves great malevolence with what appears to be little musical effort and more extatic and energetic, but rough playing. It's just the thing that suits the genre. Things like urfaust, Mayhem's deathcrush. Great musicianship to me is not necessary how precise and tight someone can noodle on
a guitar, but rather how expressive the musician can create what he set out to do. If the goal is to sound rotten, disgusting, or even hypnotic and manic at the same time, black metal is the way to go.
>>
>>63631905
Even Doom? I feel like Black, Doom and some Tech Death bands are the pinnacle of metal and everything else is 99% disposable.
>>
>>63632593
Early albums of the big 3, a canorous quintet, garden of shadows, ceremonium, depresy, sentenced, ancestral etc...
>>63632597
I think that was achieved on darkthrone's albums the best, every bm band that goes for this style usually doesn't have any substance though
>>
>>63632092
Played drums, never got into any bands as the only one's around already had drummers that were better than me and with cars to get their shit around. Gave up on that goal.

Picked up the guitar last year as I decided if I want to make music I'll have to make it by myself, been noodling away at a few riffs but am still practicing and improving daily. I'll get there someday.

>>63632515
>90% of BM is just boring derivative bullshit but I knew that long before I picked up the guitar and my main interest in BM was always the drumming since that's what I played when I started listening to it. There's still a lot of great riffs and interesting deviations in BM so as long as you stay out of the usual garbage that comes out it's okay.

>>63632597
All of that, I don't care about the technicality or how complex the riffs are, it's the aesthetic behind the music that's important and great riffs are just a way to improve on the ideas behind the music. Darkthrone's drumming is goat but I'd rather chop my balls off than actually play it because of how boring it is to actually play.

>>63633149

>>
>>63633154
The Gallery is too convoluted for me. Its pretentious in the self-aware sense so I don't mind that, but it never really goes anywhere for me. As a band they have a very odd place for me, in my teen years In Flames were my favorite band, then since 2005 to nowadays its Insomnium, despite having botched everything after ATWW which was the monumental album for the genre. Its also pretty funny how almost nobody tried to copy neither DT or Insomnium.

DT-wise, I think they are expert songwriters. Sure, their trademark are pedal riffs but still they have very complex arrangements, rarely anything is being repeated, they fuck around with different time signatures but in a very smooth flowy way that you don't even notice it unless you really look for that kind of stuff. Its definitely kind of music that rewards you with every subsequent listen in a sense. There is a single or two on every album but that's to be expected.

>almost nobody tried to copy neither DT or Insomnium
Well the funny thins is that DT were the least popular band of the 3 at the time, but in the ned they remained the most consistent

And yes, I noticed that their tracks are still more complex than your average pop metal despite mostly following verse-chorus structure

And I thought last Omnium Gatherum was ok, but uninspired

I wonder what new DT album this year will sound like when they said it will sound like older ones

I thought first one was mostly dull with some great tracks like In My Absence, The Fatalist and Iridium and he next one was slightly better, but still not great.

WATV is in my opinion their weakest album. 6/10 honestly. I dont like how they let the new guy write shit straight away, it felt forced and didnt match their style. I really disliked Dream Oblivion and whatever other video was. Which is odd because the new guy is former guitar player in Soilwork, and he was/is still on guitar in Dimension Zero, which are hinting for a new album soonish and I fucking love DZ.

Construct on the other hand was excellent. I dont want them to change to that style, and they apparently wont so that's great, but I really liked it as a one-time spinoff record of a kind. Production was neat, guitars sound almost dream-poppy at times, and there is shitload of clean vocals which was a welcome change for them. Stanne has an excellent voice and I like that he isn't overdoing it. If I was to bring home a girl from some metal show or whatever and she was into pretentious artsy fartsy bands, I would put Construct on to listen to while fucking, its that kind of music but in a good way.

Also how would you rank their big 3 200s albums? for me Damage Done > Fiction > Character

DD is just the most fun album with most memorable songs like Final Resistance, Monochromatic Stains andThe Treason Wall and I love the closing instrumental
Character just felt like copy of previous album with weaker tracks, the only really outstanding tracks were the first and the last one and Lost to Apathy
Fiction however had plenty interesting new ideas like on Inside the Particle Storm, Misery's Crown and the last track, plus Terminus is absolutely kille with its hook, I would go that far to say it was the last truly great MDM album.

Not an "extreme metal band goes soft", but actual extreme metal ballads.
>>
>>63633599
I have listened to Fiction the most but I would still rang it the lowest out of principle - sheer amount of chugga chugga is kind of cheapening the lasting effect for me. Best track is either Mundane and the Magic or bonus track, link related. DT always had the dopest bonus tracks.

>dat fucking atmosphere

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqvNyilzOKU

I would also agree that Fiction was the last truly important mdm record. There were more great albums that I listened to a lot, that were subjectively great but didn't come near that kind of lasting appeal and general importance for the genre. Mostly talking about Solution .45 debut but its too proggy and insufficiently mdmy with its modernshit riffs, and also the last MyGrain album. Well, last two.

>Depending on the musical styling in each sub-genre, the lyrics found in metal are mostly very well-structured and very grounded and very well-implemented. If you actually took the time to listen and absorb the lyrics, the music and just the overall atmosphere, it will evoke emotions that transcend the metal genre, they'll make you think, they'll send you into a state of multi-tonal euphoria that you wish the wonderful experience would never end. I'm worried Im becoming a metalhead, people who's music I've never enjoyed, and never though I would because it was too heavy, not pretty, and too fast a lot of the time. I've always loved classic rock, and pink floyd will forever be my favorite band, but I started listening to a lot of guns and roses, then AC DC, and now there are just a few metallica songs that I really enjoy listening to, particularly fade to black. I still enjoy classic rock, but I find now that I really like stuff with heavier drums, a little bit of distorted guitar, but it has to have good melody, and decent voicings. I don't want to be a metalhead, and I've always not liked the genre, but I can't shake this feeling of power you get listening to the pick it up riff in fade to black by metallica. Can you recommend me some similar songs to this? I don't like sheer speed metal, or any kind of death metal, but I loved fade to black. Any recommendations for some lighter metal stuff like Fade to Black?

Anyway you'd probably like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest or any of the mainstream heavy metal bands.

Also for rock check out The Answer and Airbourne, both fantastic

They were good, definitely enjoyable. I'm not a fan of their new stuff but they played plenty of old stuff. Both Maniac, Attila and Messiah were on stage for vocals on several songs. Manheim guested as a drummer for some songs, too. It was splendid, I've no complaints, but I've seen em before so it's not like I was ultrahyped.

They're pretty good, I just dislike their metallica syndrome of dragging songs on for too damn long. It works on occasion, not in every single song. Especially when only a few of their songs actually add something in to justify dragging the songs on.

Their lyrics are something special though.
