Good Morning /daily/!
I listened to Sleep while sleeping and it has been a rather exhausting experience. I dreamt about trying to turn it off several times in the dream with finally doing so around 7 hours into the music. Strange.

These dogs are out of this world. Very good dogs.
>Akio Suzuki - a i sha
This album started from small field recordings of a person walking around hallways to an industrial drone painting. It reminds me of the factory I worked in back in the day with all the cacophonous elements shaping an interesting environment. That’s what the opening Howling Objects sounds like for 21 minute.
The remaining time on the record is dedicated to a 2-part title piece. It is very similar in terms of the sound recording presence of people walking around, but the drones get harsher, sounding like an extra-terrestrial spaceship. There is a very glass-like shimmer in the background from time to time that I found to be absolutely gorgeous in the context of a rather condensed chaos around it. A few announcements are played, making me believe this is some sort of a transport station. The second part amplifies the sound density. That’s how the album revolves until the closure.
Now here’s the really cool part:
>This LP consists of only the performances with use of radio. "Howling Objects" with reverberation of large space at the museum or "Aisha" that would be a developed form of such object cruises around in the museum with radio on its truck.... Those can be noise itself, but they exist in accordance with the method of "Oto-date" and "Tadori" that Suzuki has been continuously searching for. Here, an approach to Suzuki's hard-core sound in his nature is surely concentrated.
Pretty cool. Doesn’t impress me much in terms of the sound overall, but the concept sounds interesting.
6+/10 because I thought it was pleasant but wouldn’t say it was anything that remarkable without knowing what the recording process was like. Interesting document of sound exploration regardless.

Hi /daily/.
I think I made a dream (or rather a nightmare) where my parents offered me Liturgy's entire discography and The Ark Work alone was a 5 CD boxset. This place is messing with me.
>>63631827
>The Ark Work alone was a 5 CD boxset
that sounds great. 3 CDs of solo Midi horns
http://pitchfork.com/staff/seth-colter-walls/
This guy seems to be paying a lot more attention to jazz and experimental records for p4k, I recommend to check out his reviews. His writing is pretty good and he talks about nice records.
>Slint - Tweez
Comparing this album to Spiderland is not even close to fair, so I won't bother with it. Rather, this album serves as somewhat of a tech demo, a look into what Slint can do and what it's all about, but not yet fleshed out into full-fledged songs. It's basically not much more than your average math rock album, but the Big Black influences here give it some emotional power that many bad math rock bands lack. So yeah, it's above average, with some seriously good tracks going on ("Ron", "Pat", and "Carol" are some fine examples), and it ends before it ends up being too much of the same, so i can dig it. 3.0+
>Bodychoke - Five Prostitutes
Less interesting than Cold River Songs for most of its duration, with many shorter tracks that simply lack the cathartic value of many songs on CRS. Most of it is simply a decent, more polished take on early swans, more or less. HOWEVER, the last 20 minutes or so are seriously great, starting with the extremely off-the-wall "How Much Can You Take", completely shredded up with screams of insanity, tons of guitar noise, and a throbbing, reverbing bass. Then, the nearly 16-minute closer finishes off the album just perfectly. It's a very repetitive, but very climactic piece of shredding, noisy post-rock, pummeling away until it absolutely numbs the mind. I really hope the rest of the album grows on me more. 3.0+
The Great Complotto Pordenone was really good. It's a V.A. complation of Italian New Wave, Punk and Synth. Every song had something going on its own, but the album still felt very consistent. It's generally upbeat and a fun record to listen to, recommended for fans of the genre
>tfw burnt the top of my mouth
>>63632076
looks fresh
Sounds familiar?
https://ilitchmusic.bandcamp.com/track/breaking-point-i
>>63631718
Alright, let’s dissect this album.
>Arcane
Noisy, drone-y guitar wanks. Caravane sounded like Faust’s So Far opener.
>Ilitch
28 minutes of kosmische music with tons of electronic sound explorations and a small blues section closing it off. Some bits reminded me of Pink Floyd.
>Breaking Point
3 tracks of guitar improvisation over a synth background and an 8-bit drum machine section that sounds like Dan Barrett straight up sampled for Holy Fucking Shit 4000. Especially on part III. Just listen.
http://vocaroo.com/i/s076KdUEmgxK
I understand that presets on drum machines are a thing, but this is way too suspicious.
>Ruth
Jams reminiscent of live performances from Can with a female vocalist, singing in French.
>Crash
Very 80s. Arpeggiated synths and cheesy drum machines included. French male vocals over it too.
I thought Arcane, Ilitch and Ruth projects were awesome. Breaking Point was ok, while Crash wasn’t my thing. Interesting compilation.
7/10.
>>63631783
Ok man I didn't finish it, I listened to most of it
It's so disjointed and awkward. I liked the studio chatter but it went on too long. I feel like that should supplement the melodies instead of nearly standing in for them
I don't really know what you were going for so I'm having trouble being constructive. I'm getting impressions of bluesy wank a la haino? Also I dislike the cover art. Why does the otherwise spooky cool glitch monster have that big weird dick?
>>63631944
They really did screw up with the redesign.
>>63632602
Basically the deal with this album is that it is kind of an "accident": the whole thing was improvised, and wasn't meant to be an album. Also the album art was randomly generated.
If you'd like more coherent stuff from us without any studio chatter, this: https://hedon-ism.bandcamp.com/album/the-leaving-story has two longer tracks that each have their own independent theme. Don't feel obliged to listen.
Klezmer Band playing John Zorn, I don't like Zorn much, but it's still a decent album, with nice vocals
Here's what I have so far, if you've reserved check to make sure you're here. This should be all, but please let me know if you reserved a spot and were denied. Then I will delete the last spot (Mark And or SDC) and make room :3
Still need an album from Misha and an album + dog from Tecnoma. If I don't get it within 10 hours I'll give up your spot for someone else.

Just talking about what you've been listening to and getting recommendations based on that.
Most people just make a chart for every day on the calendar and listen to an album a day, but quite a few do more than that.

uhh there's not really a clear purpose, but most people just make a chart of their backlog and rate and/or review the stuff they listen to. The use of trips makes it so that we know each other and can rec more easily (better than based on a chart anyway), but it does come with a lot of circlejerking/shitposting, but probably still less than in most other threads.

Yes but dogs are too cute imo and they're dumb because they actually do the things you tell them to do. Cats are smart. I want a turtle though.

>>63634263
Well I think both use timbre dynamic and pitch etc to make a freer form of classical music and they're probably both atonal? But I think serialism is mainly centered around Schoenberg's 12-tone technique while sonorism seems to be a bit different in its atonality and kind of exclusive to Poland.

Also I'd say "boundary pushing serialism" is a little incorrect in the sense that serialism (or sonorism) in itself is boundary pushing but it doesn't really push the boundaries of sonorism (or serialism, whatever). But maybe I'm bitching too much about this now

I don't like percussive guitar much. You know, the technique where the guy slaps the guitar body while playing for it to sound "cool". Here, however, Joe Sachse does it a lot BUT he remembers the key to the technique that lots of people forget. He uses it to compliment his playing style, rather than create a whole another distracting melodic pathway. It is not a showcase presence.
This record also features the most ridiculous performance of Monk's Round About Midnight. It sounds like it is played underwater by a guitarist with a hammer instead of a pick.

had a pretty awesome last week, music-wise
progressive emo, +++
folktronica, ++ to +++: i still don't think it's as good as books' two first lps but i've enjoyed it more this time around than ever before, so there's another album of theirs in the rank of my favorites
chamber pop, + to ++: many of its individual components are great but the unstructured nature starts to sort of, not exactly "grate" on me but, you know
progressive folk punk, ++ to +++: i mostly just find myself listening to the opening and closing tracks these days :\
metalcore, djent, ~
electropunk, +++: still absolutely no idea why i like this so much, theres little of what i usually like or consider "good" or whatever, but its addictive and v relistenable regardless. lets just say it has a certain je ne sais quoi. makes me think of Transilvanian Hunger?
folktronica, +++
electropop, ++
metalcore, ++: i think i found out why i like this as much as i do though. theres a clear sense of structure and "direction" across the whole album that you dont typically find in modern -core, quite the opposite, you get the sense that riffs are chosen not for their own sake (not something i consider a bad thing) but to convey a feeling that adds to the bigger picture. looked into Reflections' early stuff a bit but that didn't click with me yet
complextro, +: pretty damn gaudy, pretty much my kind of dance music
alt rock, ++: kodi's taste is so good, even the stuff he hates is neat
folk rock, ++ to +++
avant-prog, +
crabcore, + to ++
chamber folk, +
minimalism, +++
dnb, shoegaze, post-rock, ++: well, they have an interesting mix going for them certainly
crabcore, ++
post-hardcore, ~ to +
indie rock, ~
pop rock, +
electropop, +
nu metal, +: yr bog standard nu metal updated with a handful of djent and trancecore vignettes
avant-prog, +: their weakest album
avant-emo, ++ to +++: for now i prefer Masked Dancers but i could see that change around a lot, for ill be listening the fuck out of this band

>Boris - Pink
Every song here is quite good. I was reluctant to call this doom (though some songs definitely are)--there's some psych rock, some post-hardcore, some post-rock kind of stuff, etc--but overall it's just heavy and drone-y, so the tag stays.
Like I said, I though each individual song was pretty good ("Afterburner" is awesome, by the way), but the flow is not. From what I understand, the tracklist was changed a few times, but as is (Diwphalanx Version), it has zero dramatic effect on the album. Can anyone confirm the LP version is better? 3.5/5
Someone said Pylar next.
Listened to pic related today (Going Places by Yellow Swans) because I've been recommended it quite a lot, and I really enjoyed it.
The noise is excellent, and hides an ethereal layer of ambient drone which makes the whole thing really soothing.
The aspects of it that could be called melodic (basically really drawn-out melodies) were really warm sounding and a great compliment to the noise as well.

Thanks.
I basically just really liked its atmosphere, the setting in rural Spain was on fleek and I liked how it felt slightly surrealistic all the time even though there's only one or two moments that are legitimately surrealistic. The story/concept I got out of it is relatively simple (basically just the way a child learns to cope with malevolence the first time they learn about it), but effective, and the juxtaposition between the naive innocence that permeates the movie and the brutality of "reality", more or less, was pulled off very well without being too explicit/hammy. That sums up my thoughts decently well, i think.

O, you were talking about another film. I thought you meant Jeanne Dielman, which is I'm Really Serious About Feminism: The Film. What little substance it has besides that (the cinematography is actually really nice, what little acting is there is on point, etc.) is stretched really thin over 3 hours (it's the same angles over and over again, acting is 2subtle2care). If you don't care about the politics in Jeanne Dielman you have little reason to care about the film itself in my opinion, thus my reaction.

Yeah that's why I'm not too hot on films with an overt political message, at least not if that means that the film maker puts the actual enjoyment value of the film below the message it's trying to convey. The Human Condition trilogy is an example of how to do political films: clear message, but with stellar writing, making it enjoyable even if you don't necessarily agree with what it's trying to say.

I have it Tagged as Freddie Hubbard & Ilhan Mimaroglu.
Although it's definitely more a Ilhan Mimaroglue album with Hubbard playing on it.
Fantastic album, has kind of a rocky start in my opinion, took me a few tries to get into it. But once you get past those first 2-3 songs the album really takes a turn towards brilliance and the line between jazz and sound collage starts to blur more and more and it sort of becomes it's own thing separate of the two. Also I think the story element is really engaging and keeps me invested.

>>63638695
what's a measurement, and why's it undesirable to overbreed? i'm guessing health problems
>>63638623
good doog yo
>What a dumb thing to say
Why? A dog being distinct from others just means it was genetically inbred with siblings/parents to create more dogs with certain traits like larger/smaller snouts, larger/shorter stature, and behavioral traits such as hostility and willingness to do certain tasks.
What I meant by "Breeds don't exist" is that the line between breeds often is blurred/doesn't even exist at all. You ever hear someone say their dog is 50% border collie, 30% pug, and 20% poodle or some shit? People call these "mutts" but they're just dogs in their natural state, with many different traits. Short tails and whatever can't be used to determine what "breed" a dog is in this situation because breeds do not exist on the class of something like a species.
>>63638695
There are very large amounts of dogs that suffer due to age. The dogs that suffer the most are typically those who are far too inbred like bulldogs.
>>63638750
It can cause lots of problems in dogs to overbreed. Some get cancer easier, some with too short of snouts often choke on their own saliva, and many get hip/leg displacement very easily.
>>63638732
yeah right, sure I don't
>>63638750
I don't think there is any "official" measurement, but probably morphology or DNA-sequence comparisons to wolves would be the most accurate?
>i'm guessing health problems
That's correct.
>>63638778
>Why? A dog being distinct from others just means it was genetically inbred with siblings/parents to create more dogs with certain traits like larger/smaller snouts, larger/shorter stature, and behavioral traits such as hostility and willingness to do certain tasks.
That's not really how selective breeding works. All dogs have been selectively bred from the get go just to domesticate them.
>What I meant by "Breeds don't exist" is that the line between breeds often is blurred/doesn't even exist at all
Sort of correct. Breeds are generally defined by their morphology, so as long as they're within an arbitrary threshold for how they look, they're that breed. You could argue that everything is just as non-existent as "breed", so it's a stupid point to make.
>>63638788
Probably. Maybe you could somehow measure the amount of recessive (is that an english term?) traits is has as they would be far more prominent and are probably the cause of the health problems? Or like compare that specifically to wolves?
Petition to change /daily/ into /doggodiscussion/

>>63638852

>>63638900
Actually species also has some issues. The classic "can produce fertile offspring" isn't true in all cases, some species can interbreed. And then you have ring species as well, which makes it blurry as well.
So this is pretty good so far

Rating /10 with .5 marks and +/- to try and give some tiebreaking element since the chances of two albums having the same score with 1-10 scoring is too great. Planning on finishing the first round today, but who knows.
ROUND ONE
>Tripfriend ots – Third Reich and Roll (Golden Retriever)
Love these guys, but this one just didn’t really click with me. The second half of Swastikas on Parade was real great, but the rest was just eh. I didn’t find much enjoyable the second listenthrough and the jazzy instrumentals weren’t very satisfying at all. Exteneded version has a hilarious version of “Satisfaction” but that’s the best part and it’s not even on this issue I’m reviewing.
4.0-
Good friend Rodriguez – Boredoms vol. 0 (Siberian Husky)
I’m not sure if this is just an early version of VCN or perhaps just an alternate version, but I enjoyed it either way. The psych-y almost krautesque jams are here plain as day and the acoustic-sounding versions of some tracks (like track 5, or the one with the baby cries) are just as good if not better than the original. Unfortunately, the more skeletal instrumentals are ultimately a detraction, since the most emotional and intense moments from the original (like the beginning of star) could never be recreated. Still amazing, and if you like Vision Creation Newsun as much as me, give this a shot!
7.5-
>Warm Sofa – Cartooom! (Kooikerhondje)
I can see someone looked pretty closely at my RYM. Unfortunately, I like to WATCH cartoons, not really listen to them. Had a great bubbly and almost nostalgic feeling to it. Reminds me of when I would eat breakfast as a kid and have Cartoon Network on. Audible version of eating sugar and active as fuck. I wish the sampling went a little deeper than pop music on top of cartoon samples, however. Very messy and unorganized, though I imagine some would love it that way.
6.5+
>>63639490
>Kevorkian – Revolutionary Pekinese Opera (Husky)
Just beautiful. Abrasive, concrete, avant-whatever, but underneath all of that is something really special. I would almost describe this album as “non-sequitur,” but I’m only 60% sure what that means, so I’ll refrain from that. The Paraiso tracks were particularly stunning.
9.0- and it could even go up
>co – Voice (Old English Sheepdog)
Disjointed, insane a capella music with very few instrumentals. Reminds me of a more concrete version of Meredith Monk, but I was not as big of a fan of her voice, honestly. HOLY SHIT THOUGH. The things she does with purely her voice are astounding. The layers of percussion, the NOISE tracks, the excitability and craziness of the whole thing was overwhelming at times. There were some tracks that I felt detracted from this really strong theme, like “Vacuum,” which is mostly made of electroacoustic elements. Still impressive music here. Trio and Insomnia were some fantastic noise pieces. Seriously. Anyone who likes Starsailor or Tim Buckley should give this a shot.
6.0+
>Post-feelist – Shaka Bundu (stupid frog dog)
This is the only album on RYM under the genre “Tsonga Disco.” This makes me happy, actually, because I can safely say that I do not like this whole genre since this seems to be the only album from it anyone knows about. The dub-esque moments are probably the only redeeming factor. The instrumentals are extremely plastic and the drum machine is repetitive to the point of being grading. Not my thing at all. I also don’t know who to rec this to since this album is so distant from anything I can identify as likable. Not the worst, but pretty awful.
2.5-

>Dogwanderer – Chair Beside the Window (himself)
Really interesting outsider/avant-folk tunes here. I enjoyed the noisey elements of it, yet felt it should’ve have been spaced around as much. Kind of eerie and unsettling, but promisingly so. The switching between the feminine and what I assume to be Jandek’s vocals kept it active and engaging. Really didn’t know what was going to happen next, but felt the disjointedness occasionally didn’t serve it well. Singer/songwriter that is pleasantly confusing. If you like Avant-folk (I know most of you LOVE Current 93, though that’s more Neofolk and this is its drunk grandpappy) then give this a shot.
7.0-
>Kanzler – Hampton Grease Band (St Bernard)
hmmm…not entirely sure how to feel about this one actually. The songs are very progressive, but seem to be created for the purpose of being disjointed. Reminds me a lot of Captain Beefheart, but one of the reasons I enjoy him so much is that his songs are typically short and deceptively-simple-but-secretly-complex. I think the length is the greatest flaw here. I still really enjoyed some parts, but felt the content was just unnecessarily stretched so thin due to the length. If it were half as long it would definitely be a 7+

How awful!!
>Sleep - Dopesmoker
Just to put things into perspective, this is a single album-length song based on a race of weed people. The entire song/album is a slight variation on a single riff at about the same deafening volume and pace. The fact that it's possible to listen to the entire thing at once without finding it too monotonous says a lot. And then understand that this was recorded 20 years ago. It's hard to imagine something this insane can be topped. I already knew I loved this one. 4.5/5

:0
the album was part of the "Rebore" series where boredoms invited guest djs to remix VCN and other boredoms jams. this one was done by EYE himself.
can i have a link to your rym again?
>>63639993

What are you all doing inbetween albums? I'm watching Strong Bad Emails rn.

I'm thinking of getting a subscription changing my name to "IM FISH" to make it easier. Can anyone confirm that subbing to RYM is worth it or not?
>>63640034
do you like edibles herbfriend? What is your favorite??
>>63640074
it's not often that i cook up edibles, but i've had the best dude weed lmao ever by eating some raw high quality hash (I felt like I was flying and skipping visual frames and a strange thing where time didn't exist). I wouldn't recommend doing that because a month later i found out it can bring severe illness to your stomach and i was mad paranoid, but i got lucky so it's all cool now.
what about you?

I usually just have week shit like lollipops. I'm not really a fan of getting very high. I get paranoid and I'm a big pussy.
I dabbed a few months ago and it was awful. I was out of it for a very long time. I talked to my friend for what felt like a few hours on the phone. I looked down and 18 minutes had passed. Scary shit.

Well it's only 5$ for 3 months so that's ok if you want to change your name. Other than that meh... It's still pretty cool to see the track ratings and the recommendations.
>>63640430
If I subscribe for one 3 month term then unsubscribe will my name be changed back?
>>63640473
No, you'll keep your new name
>>63640496

No worries, girls are like guys
they don't want to seem desperate, and they overthink their response, so it can take a while

As a pussy ass bitch I can safely say that's not a lot of time to overthink a response.
