Halfway through!
What next?

Also, how's this boxset for Reich; https://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/steve_reich/works__1965_1995/ ?

Not beforehand. I've barely gotten into Reich and I wonder if it's a good way to.
From what I've seen it goes around 80 euros.

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
[2000]

Maybe it was her voice, or maybe the synths were a bit tacky, but I wasn't convinced by this. I see why people would love it but there were too many things i didn't like, even if they were pretty secondary things like the goofyness of a synthline or how boring a vocal harmony was.

"Let's kill this backlog edition" [1/2]

>Mellow - Another Mellow Winter
More pop & retro (and better) than Air. Sounds like the cover-art.

>J.Rocc - Cooking Ingredients mixtape
meh.

>Al Kooper - I Stand Alone
Basically a Blood Sweat & Tears album. I like them so I don't mind.

>Takeshi Tearauchi - Let's Go Eleki
Great surf music with Japanese vibes. His discography is so messy...

>Kazuki Tomokawa - 無残の美 (Muzan no Bi)
Powerfull stuff; great arrangements.

>Crime Jazz - Music in the 2nd Degree
I wasn't really in the mood for that, but it was pretty fun!

>Causa Sui - Euporie Tide
instrumental jam-rock… not space-rock-ish or post-rock-ish enough to my taste. nice album art tho.

>El Guincho - Alegranza
AnCo-tier with Latin flavors yayyy!

>Deastro - Moondagger
Years ago, I used to collect each MP3 or WAV they shared on their blog… Now, this is a solid neo-psych-synth-pop album imho. AnCo-subpar.

>Viv Akauldren - Witness
Decent blend of psych/noisy alt-rock/post-punk/grunge/whatever; their other albums didn't impress me that much.

>Chris Rainbow - Looking Over My Shoulder
Well, it seems that Brian Wilson did a GOOD album with a slick typical 1970's production using the alias of Chris Rainbow… Pretty good!

>El Guincho - Hyperasia
Awful. This band is dead to me.

>El Guincho - Pop Negro
My favorite from them: their most original too.
>>
>>63348333
[2]
>Ronnie Von - Maquina Voadora
>Ronnie Von - A Misteriosa Luta do Reino de Parasempre
Two pleasant international pop albums with bits of Tropicália, BPM and Beatle-esque elements.

>Kazuki Tomokawa - 海静か、魂は病み (Umi Shizuka, Tamashii wa Yami)
Mix of raw "folk/blues" & more arranged songs with awesome crazy vocals.

>Mike Fiems - I would dream
Great obscure psych folk/rock. Recc'ing this!

>Emmett Finley - s/t
Obscure folk/rock. Recc'ing this!

>David Kauffman and Eric Caboor - Songs From Suicide Bridge (1984)
Urban/depressive folk; it bored me very quickly.

Smokey & His Sister - s/t
Totally forgettable folk-pop ofc. The linear notes repeat few times than they are from Cincinatti (no idea it was famous for its sausages), like if it's some exotic foreign country kek

Kenny Graham & His Satellites - Moondog and Suncat Suites
Exotica-ish covers of early Moondog material: sounds Really pleasant!

>Moondog - H'art Songs
Not as ambitious as his most famous albums (no orchestre or self-made weird instruments): only a collection of charming melodies while the old guy gently plays piano & sings. Robert Wyatt-tier!

>Patto - Hold Your Fire
Tepid mix of blues-prog-rock. As terrible as the horrendous cover-art. Puking/10

>banleng pong lang ngoen lan - khana sanguan sin
It sounds funny but it's really addictive!

Finally back home from work! the 11 hour working day was full of exciting money-making opportunities.

I listened to a Janine Jansen compilation that was released by Decca as a s/t effort. It was good, but the compilation felt like an artist introduction thing. Saint-Saens pieces were specifically enjoyable.

Either gonna do Rachmaninoff or something else.

I also have a small request. Can someone up this meme for me?

>Basia Bulat - Good Advice

This was meh. Imagine Lisa Miskovsky singing over discarded PJ Harvey b-sides with a more prevalent synth-pop presence. Made me think of something else (Beach House maybe) but I'm not sure what. I also expected some autoharp power from Baśka on this but it never really came out.

The length is only 36 minutes and it's pleasant-ish pop so check it out if you dig stuff like this.

>>
>>63351445
I never was a big fan of Hertzfeldt, "It's Such a Beautiful Day" has some pretty cool visuals when it breaks away from the stickman shit, but in terms of narrative (incoherent for the sake of it, it seems) I don't find it provides anything, and its supposed """feelsyness""" is lost on me. It has some cool moments, some nice gags, but it doesn't really come together in an interesting movie.

terminus likes some gay things eruditey doesnt like. termi likes a lot of harsher noisy stuff while eruditey is kinda average on it. eruditey dislikes talk talk and cocteau twins unlike termi, termi loves them. eruditey seems to jack off to sun ra while termi is kinda mostly meh with it, termi prefers more chaotic kind of jazz

in short termi is a lot edgier and gayer than eruditey

Well Trilogie de la Mort was fucking amazing. Very aptly titled, the first two pieces possess an air of timelessness, while the the final piece brings energy, immediacy, and then a return to bleak nothingness. I'm trying not to sound too sappy here, but I think I'm failing. Vague overarching themes aside, the music by itself is amazing. I love all the subtleties and overtones that crop up throughout each piece, so that even the spans of uneventfulness are sonically fascinating.

It's a tentative 10/10, but I'll have to revisit it soon.

well, the biggest change from their other record is the vocal delivery. Where on Presents there's a megaphone-like vocal effect, on Seeing Means More Than Safety the vocals are actually screamt without a microphone (also you could call them a bit more whiny? even if not by a lot). Also Seeing Means[...] is somewhat more tragic/anxious and has their best song ( It's more like a message to you).
It's only 16 minutes long too so you don't lose that much. If you like both, you can check out their discog compilation that has unreleased/live tracks.

So The Replacements - Pleased To Meet Me. My first replacements contact and I definitely enjoyed it. The straight up hard rock progressions on some of the tracks reminded me of Rolling Stones mixed with Smiths/Joy Division (on the cleaner guitar tracks) and a punk rock approach. Don't know about a 10, but I'll give it a 7/10 for now and revisit it soon because 32 minutes ain't shit. I thought it was pretty good. Thanks for the rec Carbonara.

I love them, but I don't know if you could dig them You're Nothing is "art punk" very clearly influenced by hardcore in terms of aggression and speed, while Plowing Into the Field of Love is some Nick Cave worship with more abrasive vocals. If either sounds like a fun time to you, check them out. You're Nothing (as well as New Brigade, which i have yet to try) are short albums though, so that might bring solace if they turn out to be not your thing.

>William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops

You all know what this is by now: the music deteriorates while it slowly loops over and over again; when Basinski finally finished this project, it was the morning of the 11th day of September, 2001, and he and his friends sat on the roof of his apartment in Brooklyn, watching the World Trade Center collapsing while listening to this.

This project is extremely polarizing: you love it or you hate it.
I've gotta admit that the idea of loops that last just a handful of seconds repeating over and over again for extended periods of time doesn't appeal me that much, and because of that I probably should dislike this compilation. But I don't, and that's because those handful of seconds are incredibly emotional, so complete and so haunting that I could listen to them forever.
I think that a single loop can be a soundtrack for so many things: d|p 1 is slow and serene, d|p 2 is terribly anxious, d|p 3 is so deeply melancholic, d|p 4 is very, very tired, but is also satisfied, d|p 5 sounds like watching the sun set, and d|p 6 makes me feel light as a feather, far away from anything that is bad.
Not only they make me feel beautiful emotions, but they also sound incredibly good: the drones and the rich harmonies fill your ears, the reverb gives to everything its space, and the crackles and the moments of silence, that slowly become more and more, sound simply incredible; by the end, the original track just consists of little spasm of melodies and harmonies, surrounded by air.
After each song's end, take a moment to re-listen to the beginning of it, when it was complete; it's a powerful experience.

d|p 4 is the one that dies in the most violent way, despite also being one of the shortest tracks on the entire collection, and the moment that d|p 5 kicks in, after this harsh disintegration, is one of the most beautiful things I've ever listened to.

[2/2]

The live version of d|p 1 is stunning: the orchestra managed to execute it perfectly, constantly changing the instrumentation, the melodies, the harmonies; it never gets boring, and is always powerful. The best reward for listening to all of this.
I wish that every single loop had one live, orchestrated version, because this is incredible.

There is something really sad about this: the way that the music days right in front of you, the fact that almost you don't notice it, and the fact that you almost forget what the original song sounded like, it all strikes me in some weird ways.
I can't make this up, I love this.

9/10

Good stuff: No New York, Going Places, You Forgot It In people (dunno if u will like tho), Bonny Bear, Hex (u will definitely like), A Piece of Strange, Deltron 3030, Pop, Sex, Exit!, Scum
Overrated but maybe worth checking out anyway: Millions Now Living, Deloused, Liquid Swords, Headhunters, None So Vile, Unquestionable Presence, Panopticon (don't remember shit from it tbqh)
Don't bother: Violent Femmes, Third, Young Team, Operation Doomsday (just listen to the track "Doomsday" and skip the rest), Getz/Gilberto (AKA "The Girl from Ipanema" + filler that tries to be that track but isn't), Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (it's actually exactly as cheesy as its title suggests).

>Eliane Radigue - Trilogie de la Mort
"Kyema" is pretty damn amazing, the drones are absolutely beautiful and I love the sort of tape music aesthetic that seems to be going on in the background. The other two pieces are also very good but not as great as "Kyema". I'm not very good at saying much about three fucking hours of drone that I listened to yesterday, but basically, seriously good stuff. Big cocks 4 u. 4.0-

>Werewolf Jerusalem - God has Shot Himself
Edgy as fuck, also absolutely great. It treads the boundary between harsh noise and HNW, but never becomes too monotonous or anything. The waves of noise comign at you are absolutely crushing and progress from howling lower-end noise to the shrieking sounds of industrial noise fuckery. Over the course of 31 minutes, it manages to stay interesting, engaging, and pummeling. Definitely one of the better harsh noise releases out there, possibly gets even better after a few relistens. 3.5+

>Glenn Jones - This Is the Wind That Blows It Out
He worked with Fahey in the past, so it's no wonder this is some Fahey-styled primitivism. Jones may not be quite as much of a guitar god as Fahey, but he nicely carves his own niche with a different guitar sound and the frequent breakaways from the standard Fahey worship sets him apart. It's all very nice, my only gripe is that I wouldn't put this on over something like Fare Forward Voyagers or Visions of the Country if I'm in the mood for american primitivism. The problem isn't with what the album does as much with what it doesn't do, which is truly amaze me with something totally unique (but "Sphinx Unto Curious Men" is fucking great). 3.0

March Albums.jpg
1 MB, 1920x1280
Today's album:
>Björk - Post

light 9 / 10

The imagination behind the production is some of the greatest I have ever heard on a pop record; the restful orchestration in It's Oh So Quiet would, on first listen, sound like a completely different collection of music than the trip-hop beats of Enjoy, but Björk maintains consistency throughout the entire 46 minutes. These trip-hop beats also appear in Possibly Maybe, in which the tensity created by the music (such as in the ascending and descending orchestral motifs in the background, halfway through) conjures up the thought that some emotional outpouring is being teasingly repressed. Other tracks let such passionate feelings release cathartically: the build-ups and rushes of The Modern Things, with Björk's singing slightly reminiscent of some tracks on Debut (such as the, albeit more dreamy, Venus as a Boy). This is a significant positive feature of Björk's pop music: there is a lot of vocal eccentricity, without resorting to the tired pop trope of overdone melisma. Such a small example is reflective of the beauty of the whole of Post: everything of art pop is taken to each subtlety and extreme, falling not into the trap of clichè, but to the success of near-perfection. (Full review will be on rateyourmusic eventually)

What are your thoughts on this album guys?
>>
>>63354399

>Metabolist - Hansten Klork
Industrial post-punk with a zeuhl-ish theatrical edge to it. The opening track is seriously great, full of noisy guitar spazz, throbbing bass lines, and progressive song structures. The other six tracks continue in the same vein, but are a little more quirky and a little less interesting in just about every way, making it a bit of a comedown after a very promising start. It might very well rise in the future, but it might just as well drop. It's cool for now. 3.0-

>The Constructus Corporation - The Ziggurat
I didn't care for uh, roughly the first 30 minutes. The skits were annoying and most of the actual music was pretty average and forgettable hip hop. It picked itself up with "Metatron 1" and "Hot Water", after which roughly half of the remaining album is actually good imo and the other half is dead average. There's quite a bit of variation in moods and themes overall, and it seems like some of the tracks have rather cool lyrically (didn't pay too much attention to that aspect, though), but does that jusitfy it being 80 minutes long? No. I can't appreciate it when hip hop albums are way longer than they need to be, and this is not an exception, especially since I don't care for roughly half of the album too much to begin with. Some stuff here I would listen to again, but it's too spotty for me to consider it anything more than an average album overall. 2.5

>>63354360
>i'll have to bother with third due to the jazz 100 meme
It's not the worst thing that could happen to you, it's just that that album has always felt very uneventful to me. There's better ways to spend an hour, let's say.

why? I find their music dull. If that's what I think it is why can't I use boring to describe them?

hmm

madvillainy => vaudeville > mm food => geedorah > doomsday = danger > born like this > jj, nehruvian

seems about right

>What are your thoughts on this album guys?
It's an unfocused mess of creative energy. This is a problem Bjork had for a ton of her career, actually. Her stuff was very unique, but she really never put her ideas together in a coherent way until Vespertine.

On Post, she also hadn't found the really emotionally brilliant vocal melodies she put together Homogenic and Vespertine. (The track Isobel hints at them).

Post is really to me a pretty cool, extremely confused album.

Dangerdoom would be great if it weren't for the lame Adult Swim samples and references he had to work in
Vaudeville Villain is great, Viktor Vaughn's another Dumile ego who's a teenager who hates Doom so the topics are more down to earth
I honestly haven't listened to much of Take Me To Your Leader but it seems like the missing link between Doomsday and Madvillainy/Mm Food
haven't tried JJ Doom but my brother (massive Doom fanboy, he's how I know most of this) says it alright
Nehruvian Doom is asstrash

Def one of those "why didn't I heard this before" albums
The instrumental parts are great and the whole album is full of great songwriting.

Dangerdoom is so catchy and fun but yeah those Aqua Teen Hunger Force skits really mar it.
Take Me to Your Leader is fucking fantastic, probably my second favorite doom project.

>Aksak Maboul - Un peu de l'âme des bandits
I expected somekind of unpleasant sound collage memery but it turned out to be pretty fun avant-prog. It encompasses a lot of different genres and influences (jazz, punk, middle eastern music...) and, in that way, I found it really similar to Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante (this is not an insult). As it progresses, it manages to get weirder and weirder which also means that it's not always very good. It also features a rare recording of Sims talking before they were even invented.
7/10

>Joanna Newsom - Ys
Holy shit, i see why so many people dickride this album. It's gorgeous. As it goes along, it begins to get somewhat repetitive, but it's a good repetition. Definitely going into my rotation. I think it'll take multiple listens to really pay attention to the lyrics, but what i can pick up is clever in a way i've had yet to see in an album. Blew my expectations out of the water. 8.9/10

Givingbear vs. Good Friend Rodriguez

Givingbear picked Half-handed Cloud again despite having lost with them in a prior tournament. I still don't like them.
Simple Songs sounded like an Elton John knock-off but was decent enough

good friend rodriguez wins
Givingbear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd9muK2M36c
However, you managed to beat Benji so you move on to the next round with 1 win and 3 losses

future listens will reaveal how not-repetitive it really is. each of the five songs have their own character and many compelling melodic ideas. a bountiful record.
what did you expect?
