as a guy who just visited this general for the first time ever, it seems like this place is pretty okay- they have charts and post music instead of shitposting; which is more than most of /mu/ can claim (especially the k-pop gen)

I caught my roommate listening to early Jimmy Eat World the other day. I told him to check out Jejune. He better do it. Which reminds me I think my Jejune record is probably trashed too but that one was hella worn out so whatever.

"WHAT DID YOU DO!?"
A lot of emo centers on the feeling of lost love and the pain of relationships or unrequited love.
Is there any albums that deal with dating a lot of girls and feeling NOTHING? The feeling of searching for love and being completely unable to feel that sensation? The feeling of never having been loved from the day you were born?
Sidenote: is it impossible to love another person if you weren't raised with any familial love? Did I miss important "programming" for life?

>>63336763
shit chart missing heaps of essentials
>>63365227
what do u think of mine>>63350053
Be honest, how many of you have listened to this guy
>>63365227
He didn't even put Rites of Spring or Embrace.
The fucking pioneers of emo for fucks sake.
Note to tripfags making charts:
Make them as "YOUR" favorites, not essenials. If that picture gets floated around to a newbie, he's gonna get into the genre on the wrong foot.
>phone vibrates
>check it to see who's texting me
>YOUR PHONE IS NOW COMPLETELY CHARGED
>>63365560
>>63365227
as much as i love rites of spring and embrace (especially), i don't think they're necessary listens to get into the emo to come after them. i'm not trying to make "an essential collection of historically important emo albums," just trying to say "here's 100 good-ass records if you're new to emo"
>>63365651
it literally says "a beginners guide" tho
>>63365657
as in guiding beginners into a bunch of cool things so they can see what sort of stuff they like and don't like and get into it more for themselves, not beginners guide to the development of the genre over time
there are already enough smaller "essentials" charts that do that
>>63365697
that wouldnt be a beginners guide then
>>63365704
i think we disagree on what the scope of a beginner's guide is
i would never show somebody that had never heard emo music before rites of spring or moss icon or embrace. the vast majority of emo music sounds nothing like the early emocore, and that stuff has a certain edge to it that's in the awkward in-between of pleasant midwest stuff and abrasive screamo (which most newbs come in looking for one or the other)
when you have listened to a bunch of different kinds of emo records and you like them all, you might wonder "huh, wonder how all this shit started"
/then/ you listen to the early emocore.
just because it's the beginnings of emo doesn't mean it's for beginners. the point is to get people into the genre, not to get them knowledgeable about it.
>>63365382
i haven't
should i?
>>63365753
>to get people into the genre
why would you ever want this
>>63365785

it's those people that want it, would you not let them?
>>63365798
just look at the current state of this general that should be enough to understand what i mean
oh boy, is this new?
>>63365918
who cares
>>63365828
all generals eventually turn into circlejerking or shitposting, that's not the fault of newfriend influx
>>63365936
if anything fresh interested folks would tone down the shitposting/circlejerking
though they would increase the amount of "hey anything like american football?????" posts (not like those are uncommon now)
All of the charts you guys post are blatantly outdated by at least 5 years. Half of them include EPs and shit by bands that have since released multiple, vastly better albums.
>>63365780
Why not.
It's like an entirely inversed version of what emo is.
Go listen to the album What Is Love by him.
It's so sickly sweet it takes fucking courage to sit through. He has a pretty good pop sensibility though.
>>63366047
lol literally the only two charts posted in this thread were made within the last 5 days
>>63366070
Then whoever's posting them has terrible taste.
For example: Using the terrible 10 minute long Bandcamp demo EP from TWAIBP when they've since released two actual studio albums. Who the fuck is like "yeah man, that demo EP that's ten minute long with olde members who've left the band is better than Harmlessness."
Fucking nobody.
Best Emo album of the 2010s stop fucking around you all have terrible taste
Is there any way to make some sort of petition or mass campaign to completely get rid of trips/names?
I know they have their uses for threads where content is being posted, but I feel like you should select "assign an ID for this thread" when making a thread so that we never deal with people trying to pathetically form some sort of identity for attention.
It would work great; the ID would just say OP in red text or something, and you'd never be able to know who it is aside from that. Trips could've been used sparingly as a rare tool, but now it's just for egotistical people. You've all abused it and now everyone hates you.
This is fucking essential. And a hell of a lot better than Hotelier
>>63366091
umm like
not only do I definitely think it's been all downhill since that demo EP, but so do most of the people around here that consistently post :V
>>63366139
Than you all have laughably bad taste. Please hang yourself.
>>63366139
>umm like
> :V
>posting with a trip
Please take your trip off, nobody's impressed.
>>63366150
i'd rather not. formlessness just has a strength in songwriting unmatched by the stuff on whenever/harmlessness. the lower production value is more than compensated for by the not-boring songs
>>63366167
You're trying so hard to be a contrarian it's embarrassing.
>>63366167
please dont reply to any more of his posts
>>63366165
if i was trying to impress people i wouldn't be on 4chan
i don't get why everyone thinks being a trip is about attention. there are much easier ways to get positive attention, and since a trip is a pseudonym on an anonymous board i don't even know how the benefits of that attention would be useful unless you had a painfully self-centered personality.
i use a trip because it's useful for demonstrating that i'm not a viral marketer when i post a really obscure bandcampcore-type release. it was all too often i used to come and share a cool record i found only to get like five replies saying "lol which instrument do you play in the band? its shit btw"
i also use a trip because i'm mildly entertained by angry shitposters like yall who freak out about this kind of thing
it's 4chan. it literally doesn't matter at all
>>63366167
"not-boring"
Lemme guess. You also furiously masturbate to Explosions in the Sky and other vaguely entertaining aimless post-rock garage.
"Unmatched." The songs are fucking 2 minute long demos.
There's a reason the band never plays that shit live. because it's awful and nobody wants to hear it.
>>63366185
if i was trying to be a contrarian i wouldn't be a huge fan of ostensibly pleb tier stuff like american football or the hotelier or whatever
i just honestly really liked formlessness, and then when their albums came out i was disappointed by them. what am i supposed to do, pretend the songs are more interesting than they are? the harmonies just aren't as moving and the melodies are less gripping.
>>63366210
"post a really obscure bandcampcore-type "
Except it's not that at all. It's a bad demo by a band who's fairly large for Emo now and has achieved "universal acclaim" on Metacritic
Lemme guess. You also have some sort of nonsense sob story about how you were 12 and that demo changed your life
>>63366210
>i use a trip because it's useful for demonstrating that i'm not a viral marketer when i post a really obscure bandcampcore-type release
dumbest thing ive ever heard maybe
>>63366230
>harmonies just aren't as moving and the melodies are less gripping.
LOL. I bet you're 14 and love blink 182 also
That's the entire point of being a contrarian. Stop trying to skirt around this. It's like people who post that shit tier latest rock Kid Cudi album and argue about hoe incredible it is and we're all wrong and every critic is as well
>>63366215
there's some good post rock, yeah, but a lot of it is just boring crescendos. it's hard to write captivating harmonic progressions when so much of it's been overdone, and usually third-wave post-rock bands that are just guitarists aren't creative enough with timbre or arrangement to make up for their lack of creativity with harmony.
i was disappointed that they didn't play it live when i saw them, personally. but then again they've only made it to the stage they have because they put out such simpler stuff on whenever, if ever
>>63366230
Please post a picture of your face with a timestamp.
I believe that if you're going to try and attain an identity on an anonymous image board, you might as well be entirely truthful; no half assing.
I know you would never do it because only little faggots post with trips.
>>63336763
Thank you
>>63366215
>>63366262
you have yet to lay down why Harmlessness is better, or the songs on that demo are worse
protip: that does not follow from either of these
>the songs are short
>they don't play it live anymore
>you disagree with popular opinion
>i assume you like those other bands that have nothing to do with this
>>63366238
look i'm not even talking about formlessness with that statement, read it again
>>63366262
i'm an adult, dude. but not that that matters. you haven't made a single cogent statement yet, just judgmentally asserted that because i think the four songs on formlessness are far more interesting than their other work that i must be some raging contrarian trying to stand out. pretty small dataset to make that judgment with.
i hate contrarianism as much as you do, dude.
>>63366250
it's true though. people post their own or their friend's garbage on here all the time because they're anonymous. just look at nouns.
>>63366281
>timbre
" timbre" "guitarists"
I don't think you know what timbre means. Because you're not using it right lol. Stop. You have absolutely no clue what you're saying at this point.
Being creative with timbre.
Are you a fucking retard?
Timbre is the distinctive sound of a note made by an instrument. It's that instruments quality.
It's what makes you know the difference between a Piano and a Guitar playing the same note. You can tell the instruments apart by their timbre.
How are they supposed to be creative with timbre? "Gee lemme make my guitar sound like a fucking bassoon man, really change the timbre here"
>>63366317
I've posted Nouns a few times because Dogs is a fucking banger.
Please post your face, thanks
>>63366288
why would i do this? i already said i don't care about my identity on here and am not interested in attention, except inasmuch as response might entertain me.
>>63366330
Spittin' FIRE my homie
>>63366330
you're stupid if you think guitarists can't be creative with timbre. why do you think they employ so many different pieces of equipment? is there not a difference in timbre between a distorted guitar and a clean one? or between the bridge pickup and the neck pickup?
i've been formally educated in music too, bucko
you're getting really mad about this
>>63338021

i dont know
why did you do it once before
>>63366312
You can;t even compare them. One is a 10 minute demo they made with a macbook. The other is a 50+ minute professionally recorded studio album. The band members are different. The arrangements are different.
No actual review site is going to compare them because nobody is dumb enough to try and argue you appoint aside from you.
>>63366362
because i like sal and i thought that thread was pretty funny. like i said earlier this site doesn't matter at all and i don't really care much about interacting with it except inasmuch as it entertains me and exposes me to new media
>>63366340
The best part of you posting with a trip is that I can go on RBT and see EVERYTHING you've posted. You're leaving a real gnarly trail of faggotry buckaroo.
>>63366387
enjoy it
i'm surprised you care enough about someone you're supposedly so annoyed and angered by to browse through their posts though
>>63366362
Link? I want to know what this fuckhead looks like. Every time a trip posts their face (which they love to do) it's always a little worm that would never DARE to say this shit to people in real life.
>>63366402
i've never said anything particularly dramatic here; the other guy is the only one being angsty and calling me a faggot and such
i'd say everything i said here to anyone who was interested in talking about it. in fact i have in real life in discussions about twiabp
Let's examine the lyrics.
Yeah, this http://genius.com/The-world-is-a-beautiful-place-and-i-am-no-longer-afraid-to-die-eyjafjallajokull-dance-lyrics

>>63366433
Consider this: Lyrics are part of the composition of songs. You even mentioned harmonies and melodies.
You have no clue what you're talking about. Argue about musical terms and songwriting cluelessly when you obviously have no clue and keep using words incorrectly

>>63366449

"APPEAL TO AUTHORITY"
Lol. Cool. Tell me more about your ego band with 2 minute songs who cant release anything, make money, or book shows because you exclusively use band camp and refuse to be reviewed or interviewed.
"MUSIC IS ONLY GOOD IF IT'S SHIT QUALITY 60KBPS AND YUO DON'T KNOW HOW TO WRITE A SONG YET. I'LL NEVER LET PITCHFORK REVIEW ME. DIY 4 LIFE MAN DON'T LET THE MAN TELL YOU YOU'RE BAD"

>>63366471

>>63366475
You clearly don't know anything about music. This is embarrassing. Go to college and take an introduction level music theory class. Fuck, read wikipedia even.
>>63366499
it's so perplexing to me that you're so angry about someone you don't know, to the point where you yell at some bystander thinking he's the same guy
and the attacks on my appearance (which if you know at all you have a very limited dataset on) are unnecessary, too
and it's even more perplexing to me if you're not angry but want everyone to think you are
are you so unhappy with things you need to take your anger out on strangers on the internet just trying to enjoy music?
>>63366508
i listen to screamo, grind and brutal death mainly, lyrics are important if they are really enunciated though i was fuckin around
>>63366518
maddest person ever
>>63366518
for the second time, saying i don't know anything about music doesn't make it true. you haven't given a single substantial point where i misused a musical term, and one of them you didn't even bother to explain how my response was wrong (because it wasn't)
i have taken music courses and i've spent a lot of time reading about music on wikipedia and in books, because i love it. i'm no expert but i know my shit, especially basic vocab like "harmonies" and "melodies" and "timbre"
writing that it's 'embarassing' that i don't doesn't make it true, and i'm not sure why you think i would think any differently about my own knowledge because of someone on 4chan
>>63366534
2016. "Screamo." LOL. I too remember when white teenage girls in 2006 tried to define metal and post-hardcore
>>63366563
wow get a load of this guy, mr too cool for screamo but plenty cool enough for twiabp
>>63366554
But you didn't use timbre correctly. You're arguing it still. It was completely wrong.
In a song where you have guitars playing repetitive post-rock stuff for 5 minutes and there's a vocal line that vocal line is clearly the melody.
You need Pic related or a teacher or something. Or a dictionary. Or an elementary school music class
>>63366499
>Tell me more about your ego band with 2 minute songs who cant release anything, make money, or book shows because you exclusively use band camp and refuse to be reviewed or interviewed.
i don't play in a band
>"MUSIC IS ONLY GOOD IF IT'S SHIT QUALITY 60KBPS AND YUO DON'T KNOW HOW TO WRITE A SONG YET. I'LL NEVER LET PITCHFORK REVIEW ME. DIY 4 LIFE MAN DON'T LET THE MAN TELL YOU YOU'RE BAD"
false dichotomy
>You;re worthless and nobody likes you.
this is a thread about emo and anime
>>63366591
Screamo isn't a genre. It's a term used by white girls and old white dudes who don't know the names of actual music genres. At best it's a very broad incorrect way to describe metalcore and post-hardcore
https://rateyourmusic.com/~jmarvin_
this is him
also looking through the archive for this was a nightmare. this kid posts the same things over and over its ridiculous
>>63366605
dude, i already explained that i did use timbre correctly. guitars are capable of producing a variety of timbres depending on how you play them, especially electric.
again, are you really going to be as dumb as to assert that a telecaster on neck pickup with reverb is the same timbre as an ibanez meal guitar on bridge setting with distortion?
you're trying to make me mad and i really am not sure why. at this point i'm not entertained by this conversation anymore, just bored, so i'm gonna go shower, get dressed, and get on with my life
>>63336178
What's some good emo for wanting to kick the shit out of worst k-on?
>>63366632
it definitely is a genre. it's recognized pretty much anywhere. genres are hardly technical terms, they're simply vague labels to tie trends in music together and refer to a certain sound succinctly. their legitimacy is determined pretty much by how widespread their use is, no more than that
>>63366632

Broken World Fest looks pretty lame to begin with anyway. And it's just going to be all those shitty tumblr kids. The newer music being godawful aside. what really makes me mad though is that what happened to World Is also happened to AJJ and most of the other punk bands with a sense of humor.
And the last time I saw them live they didn't even hang out with people after the set. They just sort of chilled by themselves and ignored their merch table. I remember seeing them back when they were cool with Dads and getting to actually talk to all the bands. Shitty Greg and John were really nice people.

greg horrible xD

I think whenever, if ever is damn good and so is the stuff before it but holy damn when between bodies dropped, how can a band start sucking so hard with one release.
I still do listen to their early stuff semi-regularly but the new stuff i just don't like even if i try to force myself.

the bands in the first paragraph are among my favourite ones, and the second one consists of notable mentions. although, after listening to Caust again, this may be subject to change
wow, this song is dope by tmp standards

Speaking of AJJ i also have the salad glove. Fuck me.
>>63373274
Yeah but the salad glove is a great product. Excellent purchase.
I, on the other hand, have the AJJ pillowcase. That thing is one of the best pieces of band merch I have ever bought.
>>63373304
That pillowcase is sick i gotta admit.
The fanny pack was some shit too.

jesus anon
what else do you have
should we start a new thread?
>>63373359
I guess that's all the strange merch i have. Lots of shirts and stuff but those are pretty normal stuff.
Oh damn i remembered that i do have the TWIAPB catboat rectangular picture lathe 7" that has the song fightboat slowed down and cats meowing over it.

I don't think I ever sold that one. I'm holding onto that, Gig Life, Formlessness, Josh is Dead, and the W,IE test press. I sold everything else. Actually, I made some dude on discogs a deal and sold all of the tapes including the April Fools tapes as one package ppd.
might make new thread, should i or does this still have a bit of life in it
