Stamina and rigorous rhythm are usually the most sought after qualities of a bassist in a band.
Essentials would be knowing your scales and having good rhythm. Also learn how to have a good form, ie hand placement, proper way to fingerstyle/slap, and muting.

When people ask me how to get good on guitar I tell them to start playing ten years before they actually did. Fact is, if you haven't picked up a guitar by the time you're 20 then maybe you don't want to play enough.
>>
someone posted a similar question before

but my guitar gets pretty noisy, and the hum goes away completely if I touch any metal part of the guitar. I heard it could be because poor grounding or something, or is it just a side effect of having non-noiseless single coil pickups
>>
>>63335337
depending on the electrical stuff around, even with humbuckers you'll get some noise. The things you can do that mitigate it are humbuckers/noiseless pickups, grounding the bridge, and shielding the cavities.
>>
>>63332023
>it literally isn't caused by the but
>If the open strings are drastically worse than sure
As I said, they are. I do get buzz sometimes when fretting further down and picking harder, but that's not the main issue.

>otherwise it's a question of setup, frets, or neck
>I thought you said you already tried fixing it with setup but I'm starting to find his hard to believe.
I've been through setup and everything I could do to the neck short of mechanical mods tens of times back and forth. Checking/fixing the frets is the one thing I didn't do and this I also wouldn't try myself.

>Loosen your truss rod.
It's literally unscrewed completely loose. And if I screw it back to the point of feeling any resistance whatsoever on it, the buzz on open strings gets 10x worse.

If you go by Graphtech's nut manual as a reference, they recommend 0.25mm clearace on Low E on 1st fret when fretted at 3rd. I have literally 0.00mm clearance when I fret on 3rd. In fact, I'm not sure if I even have the 0.25mm on 1st fret on open string.

Look, I'm quite new to the instrument and I respect it and the people with many years more knowledge and experience with it than me. But I've been reading about it and setting and re-setting it back and forth for the whole week long and from that experience and from reading opinions of many other people I can't see how it could be anything but the nut being simply too low.

I'll post when I'm done replacing it in a couple of days (waiting for a pack of fresh strings to arrive too). If I end up fucking it up then I'll humbly accept your "told you".

you can diy frets, but even if you don't plan to you can confirm this is the problem by checking for high/low frets with a credit card. You can check for a curve to the neck with a larger straight edge.

This is the kind of mindset that never fails to fascinate me. It's like there's no middle ground for people like you. You want to have a choice of either being a completely worthless player who didn't achieve anything or Jimi Hendrix right out of the gate and it's plain wrong. Start practicing, give it roughly 2-3 years and then start/join bands and gig. Hell, some people don't even do that much, they just learn some cowboy chords and start jamming with other people. As a result, in a few years you will be a young musician who performs occasionally at places and sells some of his compositions on Bandcamp. The bottom line is to stop daydreaming about being a worldwide sensation at a still young age, because even being a hardworking genius isn't enough to achieve that. For that you also need LOTS AND LOTS of LUCK.

Not really. You have the all the benefits of the 21st century. Decades ago, people had no tabs or ultimate guitar, Youtube Tutorials, Tab Pro and Power Tab.

Be glad don't have to learn to read sheet music, or try to learn purely from improvising and by ear.

All it takes is a quick Tab search of your favorite songs, and you can have a hella good time on guitar. Now go learn some AC~DC guitar riffs.

Nigger, I'm 33 and I just picked it up. I've literally been dreaming to have a guitar since I was 12 but parents wouldn't let me and I didn't have means nor opportunity to go against them. Then came college, early jobs, family and all that shit taking up all my time.

Now I was finally in the position to just go and buy one and I'm having the time of my life sucking terribly at it and making my fingers nearly bleed every evening.

So fuck you and your whiny ass. Go watch the latest harem animu if you don't find the fun in playing or can't handle the learning curve.

My parents forced me to learn clarinet age 11. I stopped playing age 17 and left the orchestra.
Then 2 years later i started learning bass cause I had a lot of fun playing music, the proplem was the choice of instrument.
And now age 23 I bought a trombone just for fun, gonna take some lessons for beginning and then just let it ride.

You will never be to old, if you really want to make music. People who tell you to be to old are just frustrated by not having enough will or time to practice.
And i hope you will take a teacher for at least one year.

Cause #1, your playing ability won't be adequate to necessitate the need for 2 extra strings

#2, the high C# or w/e, is useless

#3, if the music you plan to play uses the Low B, you can very well make a 4 string tuned BEAD or AEAD since music that uses ultra low notes do not use the really high notes. And if it does, it's out of place and is just virtuoso wanker shit

Congratulations. RG652AHM right? That's one of the best models Ibanez has made in years. I'm not huge on the stock pups (still a decent DiMarzio pickup for once) but that's the best bridge they make.

Yes, however I have brand new strings on it, and the harsh bright metallic clank just reminds me of the cannibal corpse bassist and that just pisses me off.

the B is more useful because it expands the range of the bass near where you actually play. The low E is used very often, having more notes near that is useful. On the other hand you rarely play the highest notes, do having the high string is only used for the added patterns and wanking capabilities. The B does the same thing but it is harder to play.
>>
>>63336824
Seems to be right.
Maybe sounds weird, because I'm a bassist, but don't like the ultra low tones.
May could depend on the sound of my bass and amp, but I really prefer playing A and above.
Atm I'm more into slapping and it seems stupid to slap notes lower than E if you prefer clean playing.
>>
>>63336824
Agreed, and having 21+ frets is beyond silly, considering frets 12 to 15, maybe 17 get used extremely seldom, even for solo virtuoso crap.

When I had my 24 fret ibanez, I DID like jamming on those super high frets with disortion on... or clean, with a delay and chorus effects

for cool tones the high frets are pretty useful as you say. I'm recently a big fan of going nang boyz, and the use of melodic bass fills is worth listening to. The songs they have with just 1 guitar, the bass jumps in the the guitars range with the guitar plays a fill or something. Pretty cool. Plus, moose calls.

work on the way you attack the string then, you need to use less force in your right hand and change your angle if you want less pick noise

>>63337542
jazz iii is a small pick that is mostly meant for playing lead, a larger pick allows you to strum faster and harder without fucking your hand or dropping your pick. Personally though I prefer jazz iii for lead and very thin picks for rhythm. Dunlop USA nylons are incredible for that. They have a nice tone too.

>>63337607
A violin is small, so that problem isn't really there anyway, but upright bassists look goofy when they do that.

Seagull guitars are typically great. Breedlove and Maton could be worth looking at in that price range as well.

Realistically though play everything you can and pick the one that plays and sounds the best to you. I used to have a real cheap Yamaha acoustic as my recording guitar (for acoustic steel string) for years because it sounded great. It was an outlier for sure though.

>>63337542
The red Jazz IIIs are nylon, the black are a hardened nylon, grey are carbon fiber, the transparent yellow and 2mm black ones are Ultex.

As for sound material and thickness would be my bet but I couldn't explain the physics behind it. The angle you pick at makes a difference too, a lot of guys like Paul Gilbert and Devin Townsend rave about picking at an angle to get a scraping sound. I tend to pick parallel for clarity.

Jazz IIIs are extremely popular because they improve accuracy when playing for most people due to their size. Most of them are 1.38mm and have barely any flex in them as well.

The main drawback on Jazz IIIs is strumming. You get used to it eventually and it feels no different but it can be very awkward at first. They make leads and tremolo picking trivially easy though.

>>63337575
Can't say sorry I've only used dunlop picks for the last ten years or so. The tips don't look pointy enough for my liking.

>>63337641
You do notice a sound with picks. Considering you can get sample packs from Dunlop for free there's no reason not to try a whole bunch and see what you like the most.

I prefer Ultex the most but they don't make a maxgrip jazz III version and the carbon fiber variants last a lot longer.

If you like the JP picks hop on eBay and see if you can find some of the Prototype version. The tip was beveled so it comes to a real point. I don't really like the JPs they sell now but the prototypes were amazing.

I highly recommend trying the 2mm Ultex as well if you're into both of those. The JPs are 2.2 from memory so the 2mm are slightly thinner but they're also physically smaller than a JP.
>>
Do you people only use one pick type or what?

I like medium- heavy cellulite picks for single string fast thrashy tremolo type playing

Jazz III are great for 1-2, maybe 3 string fast, precise, accurate playing

Nylon .88mm for strumming chords

And the medium and heavy nylons are good for full range sorta of arpeggio, scale, long stretchy riffs.

When I was younger, I only used one type of pick

Any jazz studies majors in a relatively normal, not exceptionally renowned program? What skill level were you at prior? I'm talking about the University of Oregon program. I've a patchwork level of guitar skill; taught by a jazz guitarist for awhile but only learned a baseline level of improvisational theory. I can suss out keys given chords, know how to construct chord progressions, can solo through the pentatonic major/minor, full ionian/aeolian, and dorian across the neck on both the 6th and 5th strings, but that's about it in terms of theory.

A mile-wide inch-deep, kinda. I'm working out of a variety of guitar workbooks on theory and sight-reading now in anticipation for my audition a literal year away, but just wanted to ask if anyone can attest to the level of skill expected in an average program. I'm confident I could meet the mark my second year, but would rather nail this first opportunity come next February if I can. Any firsthand advice is appreciated, thanks /gg/.

The thing about the physics angle is that one of the main things you'd work with is acoustics which directly relates to that upright bass you wanted to pick up.

>>63340077
Yes, sure. But I'm always looking at job opportunities for different studies here, and most engineering related things are A: well paid and B: in high demand here. >>

>>
>>63340395
You'll have to adjust both. Its easier if you know the specs your guitar is set to
>>
>>63340450
>You'll have to adjust both
Why would the intonation change? If I get the exact same string relief again, wouldn't that mean that my intonation and everything else should be as it was before? I'm just compensating for the difference in tension, right?

>>63338177

>>
>>63340483
Yes, you are compensating for the difference in tension, but that difference in tension will change the intonation a little bit. There's a lot of different variables that go into where exactly the correct tones are on the guitar, so you should always check.

It is also possible the intonation doesn't need to be changed, but its an easy adjustment and its off as much as it is on.
>>
>>63338891
play in a jazz band in college now, probably know about the same theory as you. i'm a little outmatched in terms of chord theory, that shit is hard. know how to construct every extended jazz chord all across the neck. seriously. get comping down pat. improv too, but that's secondary
>>
>>63340483
when different strings bend they change pitch differently. When you fret you stretch the strings a bit. Anyways setting intonation is the easiest part of setup since it's not subjective at all, and nobody will notice if you got it a bit off as long as you followed the right basic process.
>>
>>63340586
>>63340687
Okay then, adjust the truss rod to the same string relief, re-check intonation (which should hopefully be the same or just slightly off), and then maybe change string height if any buzzing occurs with the lower tension strings? Or rather, swap the last 2 steps around, that should be it, right?

If you don't mind the cost just get a Timeline. I've both a Timeline and a Big Sky and those two alone could be pedalboard enough. Takes a damn near month to figure out all either can do too. Just be forewarned that the Timeline needs around 300mA to work without any hiss and you can't daisy-chain it, so a clean pedalboard almost necessitates a power supply if you care about such things. Otherwise the supplied adapter works great, just personally became a pain in the ass having two pedals like that for me.

Depends how much you like delay. You can do anything delay-related with a Timeline. Fucking anything. I often hear "inspiration machine" and that's not far off. If you want the most versatile, programmable delay out there with a functional looper then get it. If you're trying to dial in a real particular tone and know what kind of sound you want, I'd say you could find a cheaper delay that'll do just what you need. I got my Strymons because I didn't know what I wanted and had cash to burn and it's worked great. As far as delay goes, somewhere, in some setting, the Timeline has the exact delay you want if you fuck around with it enough. That's the appeal.

All that said, if the price is too much or you already got a real specific sound in mind a little more research will likely yield what you want cheaper. Timeline's the Swiss Army knife of delays, but more specifically the (literal, it's a real product and kind of funny) $500 Swiss Army knife with hundreds of tools.

I should add that the programmable expression pedal settings for the Timeline are unparalleled. Just plain and simple fact.
