>The Snobs - Beatniks in the USSR
Loud-quiet dynamics and """angular""" playing reminiscent of Slint, with a few Wire touches ("Antidote" feels like a mathy post-hardcore reinterpretation of "map ref"). Of course The Snobs can't compare to either of these bands, but they do a good job carving their own niche too, such as on the fairly intense "I Want You (So)". The main downfall of this album, therefore, is its last track, where for 12 minutes nothing happens except for some repetitive guitar strumming. It feels like a beginning to Keiji Haino's solo guitar works (think I Said, This Is the Son of Nihilism), except it's only a beginning and doesn't build up towards anything at all. Very solid release unfortunately dented by 12 minutes of dead air. 3.0

>Eleh - Radiant Intervals
Wonderful drones of the most minimal kind. it's like the counterpart to a Ryoji Ikeda album, equally focused on textures of sound rather than the tones they produce, but stretched into heavy electronic drones instead of microsound. The low-end sounds produced on these four tracks are mesmerizing and will have an effect on you akin to Time Machines. 4.0

>Lucio Battisti - Anima Latina
Pleasant stuff that, with its dreamy atmosphere, progressive song structures and sometimes slightly emasculated vocals, feels a bit like an Italian 70s version of Fishmans. However, whereas Fishmans manage to make songs that are thoroughly captivating, this one didn't manage to have an immediate impact on me. As pleasant as it may be, it sometimes just felt a little too airy for its own good. I might be wrong and I might find it much more interesting after a few more listens, but as it stands, it's "merely" pleasant. 2.5+
>>
>>63307275
>Ween - The Pod
Lo-fi experimental rock featuring the vocals of the fallen-ill Ween bros. Quite a peculiar little album that in many ways reminds me of Mother of All Saints in how it's got a whole lot of fairly short experimental rock tracks, some of which really do stand out, but most of which are nothing more than alright. Remarkably consistent in what it's going for, though, considering the amount of tracks found on this album. 3.0

>Batsumi - s/t
The opening track swings like a motherfucker. Driving, tribal percussion and piano lay the foundation for this track as sax and flute improvise over it. The percussion and the occasional chanting in the background gives it that nice African vibe. The other long jam on this album, the 16-minute "Itumeleng", is less energetic but still really worth checking out. The shorter songs on the album aren't too special though, they sacrifice the jazz element for more regular songwriting, and while entirely pleasant, they're not making any waves for me. Still, the majority of the album is made up of the jazzy stuff, so it's still a very good album overall. 3.5-

Today was
>Sunn O))) - White1
It was awesome.

While all three tracks share a similar ancient-sounding, resonant darkness, each delivers such a theme in a different nuanced method: My Wall sounds like a poetic narration of a wasteland after some barbaric war; The Gates of Ballard is a nordic ritual with a hypnotising drum-machine beat; A Shaving of the Horn That Speared You builds tension dramatically and subtly, with the drone sounding like the undisturbed snores of a mythical beast. The fact that programmed drums can seem archaic and historical, while simultaneously modern and progressive, proves the genius of Sunn O))). As well as this, the way that the album's heaviness is fairly held back, compressed, or tensely limited in its force often gives way to a more reflective mood than the constant barbarism we may expect from a lot of drone and doom releases. Torts. But to be honest, it kinda makes sense, because it's one of the most cookie-cutter bop albums. Stands out because it's well done but there's not a lot about it that's memorable or great. So to sum it up, it's a jazz album.

Once you've heard Brel, Brassens and Bashung there's not much good stuff left imo.
Listen to Colette Magny for someone really underrated and Aznavour for a great classic (but a bit old).
I liked Jacques Dutronc and Nino Ferrer when I was younger. Try Georges Moustaki and Jean Ferrat for something more classic. If you liked Bashung maybe look into Arno or Thiéfaine.

Thirty Seconds to Mars - This Is War (2009)
>alternative rock, pop rock

Jared Leto is a fine actor. He always puts a very convincing, down-to-earth intensity into his performances that makes me like him a lot, especially in Dallas Buyers Club. But he might be the worst, most overdramatic, completely tone-deaf singer of all time, jesus christ. And his vocals are only the topping to the shit sundae on display here. This album is an absolute mess. Songs try too hard to be progressive and come off as jumbled, its concept is muddled and /incredibly/ generic, the child choirs on every track make me wanna tear off my ears, and god the songwriting is so corny. One of the worst albums I've ever heard, honestly. I'm fine with overblown music (I'm a Sparks fan, ffs), but my god a /little/ bit of subtlety is needed.

Cruise Your Illusion is really good Dinosaur Jr inspired alt rock, I'm not sure what else to say. 4/5

After the first track I thought I was going to hate Differance, the sludge metal style was pretty bad mixed with the korean folk but luckily they toned it down for the rest of the album. Enjoyed the more atmospheric korean folk-y bits. 3.5/5

understandable rating. i grew up moreso on the hyper cgi eurobeat hell of the 2000s, and i've always wanted something that was just as trashy and poppy as that while still being really conceptual and weird. pc music just fits the bill for me.
L.O.V.E. is a banger tho.

Pacing was fine, actually. It's just that the minimalism didn't vibe with me too well. The execution of it's ideas left alot to be desired.
>>
>>63313568
Interesting, usually people don't like it because it's very slow. I thought it pretty well done and actually really funny. I haven't seen it in awhile, and I watched it with friends so that may have something to do with it.
>>
So a lot of the time I listen to a lot of I guess fairly heavy, oppressive kinds of metal, and I'm starting to tire of it. I enjoy the stuff, but it's kinda getting to where I'd rather not listen to anything than the stuff. Except for Om, for some reason I can just listen to that for hours still.

Can anyone suggest some happy, kinda feel good stuff? Like the feeling you might get from Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson, like everything is alright in the world.

Right? I noticed that about my collection recently, it's all death and doom. Even the stuff that sounds so upbeat like paper mache dream balloon is so dark lyrically which is why i wanted to find something that better reflects how I've been feeling recently.

I mean, I love the stuff which is why I've always listened to it but I've been wanting a change of pace recently.

also Moon Safari - Bjomjud, a lot of prog suits that feel actually, especially Yes i think, but Blomjud is probably the most feel-good album there is bar none
since you mention Om, listen to Ash Ra Tempel - Schwingungen
similarly, Popol Vuh and other krautrock or new age-y stuff

I listened to Violent Femmes and Utada Hikaru.
Violent Femmes- s/t- 9/10- Didn't know what to expect with the release and was pleasantly surprised. They definitely live up to the hype and will continue to listen to this album in the future. Recommended.

Utada Hikaru– First Love- 7/10- Really interesting album. Heavy R&B vibe. Not really my thing, but not too bad. Could be a grower.

was checking this out

basically Neurotech took a different approach to the concept of trance metal, different from what else i've heard from the genre in that it's not simply trying to incorporate the typical synths into modern metal songs that scream "partay" but rather the inverse, it's dreamy uplifting trance with djent chugs. way too homogenous listen for my taste but it's its own thing so that's neat

now i'm listening to Huntsville

Tripfriend ots vs co

Eat A Peach was pretty standard blues rock, decent enough but just nothing to write home about. Reading a few reviews on the RYM page I think I might be in the minority thinking 'Mountain Jam' was the best track, others seem to hate it. 3/5

Music for the Classical Oud really surprised me, as said by another RYM user "for want of a better phrase: it rocks". Great playing and I love the sound of the Oud, I need to dig out more music with this instrument. 4/5

co is through and that's me finished the first round. Just need recs from co and hahahaha from Europe excluding Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg and the UK
